2 PREVIEW : PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN - STADE RENNAIS FC Feature Preview Paris Saint-Germain will look to continue their recent winning run and put pressure on leaders Olympique Lyonnais when they face Stade Rennais FC at the Parc des Princes on Friday evening. Laurent Blanc's side appear to have put their patchy form either side of the winter break behind them by winning their last four games in all competitions to advance in both domestic cups and move back into the top three in Ligue 1. The defending champions come into this weekend behind second-placed Olympique de Marseille on goal difference and four points adrift of Lyon. A hard-earned 1-0 win at Saint-Etienne last Sunday, achieved thanks to a second-half Zlatan Ibrahimovic penalty, was a further sign that Paris are getting back to something like their best, with Blanc saying: "The dynamic is good just now and there are signs of improvement at training. Now we need to confirm that on the field like we did at Saint-Etienne." Rennes have proven difficult opponents for PSG in recent times, holding the champions to a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture at the Stade de la Route de Lorient back in September. They have lost just once in their last seven visits to the Parc des Princes and won 2-1 there in last season's corresponding fixture, ironically the night Paris clinched the title. Blanc added: "I am not here to guess how Rennes will line up against us. Sometimes coaches say that they are going to come to the Parc to open up and play football only for what happens on the pitch to not reflect that. They took their chance when it came in the reverse fixture while we lacked penetration going forward. But the essential thing will be to get the three points." As they prepare to head into a crucial month of February in which they will put their hopes on the line in all three domestic competitions as well as in the Champions League, Blanc admitted he is still looking for star strikers Ibrahimovic and Edinson Cavani - who have scored 30 goals between them this season - to perform better together. "They complement each other quite well. But I think their relationship can and must still improve. They are far from being incompatible but their partnership could still work even better. They need to look for each other more," he said. Rennes, meanwhile, will be desperately hoping for another night to remember in the capital as they attempt to get back on track after a poor sequence of results. The Bretons have followed a run of eight league games without defeat by taking just two points from their last six matches. Last weekend saw Philippe Montanier's men suffer a remarkable 4-1 defeat at home to relegation threatened SM Caen in Brittany, and a team who looked set to be contenders for European qualification two months ago now lie in 10th place in the table. Montanier warned: "Unless everyone is at their very best we will not be able to get a result in Paris. Even when they are not at their best they dominate teams. They toiled to win their last home match but they still beat Evian 4-2. Some people say that Paris are not as good as they were but we are still talking about the very top level." Rennes travel east boosted by the return of leading scorer Paul-Georges Ntep, who has missed the last two league games with a thigh injury. However, the suspended Ermir Lenjani and the injured Kamil Grosicki miss out and Cheik Mbengue will not feature having only just returned from the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. For the hosts, Thiago Motta is banned and Gregory van der Wiel is still sidelined. With Serge Aurier still away at the Cup of Nations with the Ivory Coast, Marquinhos will again fill in at right-back. "I have been fully satisfied with how he has played at right-back. At the moment he is the only player we have who can play there. 3 - HISTORY: Paris Saint-Germain have hosted Rennes on 28 previous occasions in the top flight. The capital club have recorded 16 wins to just five for Rennes, with the remaining seven encounters ending in draws. - PSG have scored 39 goals in this fixture to 21 for Rennes. - Earlier this season, Rennes and Paris drew 1-1 at the Stade de la Route de Lorient on September 13, 2014 (Week 5). Zoumana Camara (43') put the visitors in front only for Maxwell (og-55') to ensure a share of the points in front of 27,194 fans. - Rennes won 2-1 in last season's corresponding fixture on May 7, Ezequiel Lavezzi (3') gave Paris the lead but Foued Kadir (23') equalised before Paul-Georges Ntep (27') got what proved to be the winner in front of 45,625 at the Parc des Princes. PSG had been confirmed as champions just before kick-off thanks to Monaco's draw with Guingamp earlier the same day, while the result for Rennes secured their top-flight survival. - Remarkably, Rennes have lost on just one of their last seven visits to play PSG in the capital, winning four and drawing two. In November 2012 they won this fixture 2-1 despite having two men sent off and playing almost all of the second half with nine men. - In that run, PSG's only win at home to Rennes came on May 13, 2012, when Nenê scored a hat-trick in a 3-0 victory on the penultimate weekend of the campaign. - PSG's biggest win at home to Rennes remains a 4-1 success in August 1997 when Marco Simone scored twice. Rennes recorded their biggest win at the Parc des Princes in October 2007, when Jérôme Leroy, Jimmy Briand and Sylvain Wiltord netted in a 3-1 triumph. - PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN - GENERAL: Paris come into Week 23 in third place with 44 points from 22 games. They have won 12, drawn eight and lost two of their games to date and are four points behind leaders Olympique Lyonnais, although they trail Olympique de Marseille in second only on goal difference. - Laurent Blanc's side have not been higher than second in the table this season. However, they have been permanent members of the top four since a 2-0 win at Caen on September 24 (Wk 7). - This time last season, PSG were top with 51 points, three points clear of Monaco in second. At the same stage in , they were also top with 45 points, ahead of Lyon in second on goal difference. - Their current points tally is their lowest at this stage of a season since , when they had 37 points but lay second, five points behind leaders LOSC Lille. - Last weekend, Blanc's side won 1-0 away to AS Saint-Etienne. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (pen-61') scored the only goal of the game in front of 32,302 at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard. - The Paris line-up at Saint-Etienne (4-3-3): Sirigu; Marquinhos, Silva (c), David Luiz, Maxwell; Verratti (Cabaye, 85'), Motta, Matuidi; Lucas (Pastore, 75'), Ibrahimovic, Cavani (Lavezzi, 85'). - Lucas made his 100th appearance for the club in that game. - That result saw PSG win back-to-back league games for the first time since the end of November. - PSG have scored 39 goals so far this season, a figure bettered only by Lyon (47) and Marseille (42) coming into the weekend. They have scored three goals or more on fiveseparate occasions this season, including in their 5-0 demolition of Saint-Etienne in Week 4. They have failed to score in three games. - Zlatan Ibrahimovic is their leading scorer with nine Ligue 1 goals, followed by Edinson Cavani with eight and Lucas with seven. - Ibrahimovic and Cavani have both scored 15 goals in all competitions, while Lucas has eight. Marco Verratti (4) has provided the most assists. - Ibrahimovic finished Ligue 1 top scorer for the second successive season last season with 26 goals, four fewer than his previous campaign in France. 4 - Ibrahimovic scored 41 goals in all competitions last season, beating Carlos Bianchi's previous club record of 39 goals in one campaign, set in Cavani netted 25 altogether and Ezequiel Lavezzi got 12 goals in total. - Ibrahimovic provided 11 assists last season, a tally bettered only by AS Monaco's James Rodríguez (12). - PSG's total of 84 goals scored last season was the highest of any Ligue 1 team - Monaco, who had the second-highest tally, scored Paris have conceded 19 goals thus far. Only Saint-Etienne (14), Lyon (17) and Monaco (18) have let in fewer coming into the weekend. They have kept nine clean sheets so far. Their recent 4-2 defeat at Bastia was the first time they had let in four goals in a game since a 4-4 draw at Lyon in February PSG conceded a league-low 23 goals last season, three fewer than LOSC Lille, who had the second-best defensive record. - No Paris player has appeared in every league game this season. That result ended a run of 29 home Ligue 1 matches without defeat, stretching back to a 2-1 loss to Rennes in November The only other teams to avoid defeat at the Parc des Princes last season were AC Ajaccio, AS Monaco and LOSC Lille. - Paris are unbeaten in 14 home games this season in all competitions and have lost just two of their last 57 home games in all competitions. - PSG's average home attendance so far this season is 45,754, slightly up on last season's average of 45,420 and the second-highest in Ligue 1 behind Marseille. A high of 46,161 watched them beat Nantes while a low of 45,258 saw them beat SC Bastia. - TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: PSG claimed the season-opening Trophée des Champions for the second year running, beating EA Guingamp 2-0 in Beijing. Zlatan Ibrahimovic (8', 20') scored both goals. - COUPE DE FRANCE: Paris will entertain FC Nantes on February 11 in the round of 16 after beating Montpellier 3-0 in the round of 64 and then Girondins de Bordeaux 2-1 in the round of COUPE DE LA LIGUE: Holders Paris have been drawn away to LOSC Lille in the semi-finals, with the tie to be played on Tuesday, February 3. They have so far eliminated AC Ajaccio of Ligue 2 and AS Saint-Etienne. - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE: PSG will face Chelsea (ENG) in the last 16, with the first leg at the Parc des Princes on Tuesday, February 17 and the return at Stamford Bridge on March 11. 5 suspended last weekend. - INJURIES: Gregory van der Wiel missed last week's match with a toe problem. - STADE RENNAIS FC - GENERAL: Rennes come into Week 23 in 10th place with 30 points. They are three points adrift of Bordeaux in seventh and three points clear of Lille in 13th. Philippe Montanier's side have won eight, drawn six and lost eight of their games to date. - The Bretons have been permanent members of the top half since beating Lorient on November 7 (Week 13). They were in the relegation zone after the opening weekend of the season but have otherwise not been lower than 15th. They have not been higher than fifth at any points. - This time last season, Rennes were 16th with 24 points, six points clear of the relegation zone. In they were fourth with 36 points at the same stage. - Last weekend Rennes were beaten 4-1 at home by SM Caen. Benjamin André (15') cancelled out Sloan Privat's fourth-minute opener for the visitors. However, Lenny Nangis (50'), Julien Féret (85') and Damien Da Silva (89') scored in the second half to win the game for Caen in front of 18,091 fans at the Stade de la Route de Lorient. - The Rennes line-up against Caen ( ): Costil; Danzé (c), Mexer, Armand, Diagne; Fernandes, André (Hosiner, 77'); Prcic, Brüls (Doucouré, 65'), Pedro Henrique (Habibou, 59'); Toivonen. - That result means Rennes have now gone six league games without a win, taking just two points from the last 18 available. Their 6-2 win against Evian-Thonon-Gaillard FC in Week 2 is the only occasion in which they have scored more than twice.
