2 PREVIEW : STADE RENNAIS FC - OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE Feature Preview Stade Rennais FC play host to Olympique de Marseille on Saturday with both sides looking to make strides towards the top of the table. In the last 11 matches in the French top flight, only OGC Nice (26) have picked up more points than Rennes (22), with the Breton club climbing out of mid-table and into fifth place prior to Week 22. After a 2-0 defeat at home to Girondins de Bordeaux in their opening game of 2013, Frédéric Antonetti's side got back on track with a commanding display in seeing off SC Bastia 2-0 last weekend. The win was all the more impressive given it was Rennes' second in the space of four days after they had clinched a place in the Coupe de la Ligue final by defeating Montpellier Hérault SC. "The conditions weren't easy, but my players were serious and disciplined," said Antonetti, whose side took on Bastia in Gueugnon with the Corsican club banned from playing in their own Stade Armand Cesari. "There were a lot of well-constructed moves. There is no doubt we deserved the win. The scoreline could have been heavier. The boys are showing that, mentally, they're able to turn up for every game." With the midweek move of Yann M'Vila to Rubin Kazan, and Vincent Pajot suffering a torn hamstring in the win over Bastia, Antonetti has personnel problems in central midfield ahead of the visit of OM. Attacking midfielder Jonathan Pitroipa is on Nations Cup duty with Burkina Faso, but Antonetti can call upon in-form duo Romain Alessandrini and Julien Féret, who have been instrumental in Rennes' resurgence in recent weeks. The pair combined for the opening goal against Bastia with Alessandrini scoring to take him level with Féret as the club's leading scorer, and their evident understanding on the pitch will be key if Rennes are to improve a poor home record. The Bretons have scored more points on their travels this season than they have on home soil - as have this weekend's opponents - and have a style of play more suited to counter-attacking football. OM will be hoping to take advantage of the hosts' shortcomings at the Stade de la Route de Lorient. Though they lost on their last away trip to Sochaux, Elie Baup's men had won their three previous league games outside the confines of the Stade Vélodrome, and arrive in Brittany having closed to within a point of top spot courtesy of last weekend's dramatic 3-2 victory at home to Montpellier. "You have to persevere in football, always believe right up to the last minute," Baup explained after seeing his side come from 2-1 down to snatch the points thanks to André-Pierre Gignac's 91st-minute winner. "It's true there was a moment when we were closer to going 3-1 down, but we were able to turn the situation round. We went through the wringer. We led, fell behind, and tried to change things within the team. We believed in it, and even at 2-2 it was good, but when we went ahead, there was an explosion of joy." Smiles rather than frowns have been seen more often than not on the south coast this season with Baup turning round a team that finished in mid-table last term. Senegalese forward Modou Sougou was added to his squad this week, compensating for the firepower lost with Loïc Rémy's departure, as part of Baup's reshaping of the side, which still requires work. "Whether it be at Sochaux or against Montpellier, you saw that we can improve our distribution from the back," said the ex-toulouse FC coach. Stade Rennais FC have won 20 of those matches with Marseille triumphing on 11 occasions. - OM are unbeaten on their last four visits to the Stade de la Route de Lorient, winning on the last two trips. - LAST SEASON: An Onyekachi Apam own-goal (44') and Benoît Cheyrou (77') gave OM a 2-1 victory in Week 21, Tongo Hamed Doumbia (14') scored for the hosts. The game was played on 29 January. Rennes won 1-0 at the Stade Vélodrome in Week 5 courtesy of a goal from Jires Kembo-Ekoko (76'). - THIS SEASON: OM scored a 3-1 triumph in Week 4, part of their six-game winning streak with which to start the season. Jérémy Morel (15'), André-Pierre Gignac (84') and a Romain Danzé own-goal (90+3') gave the hosts the points with Julien Féret (57') replying. - STADE RENNAIS FC - GENERAL: Rennes are fifth in the table with 35 points from 21 games (11W, 2D, 8L). Coming into the weekend, they were level on points with OGC Nice in fourth, but behind on goal difference (+7 to +5). - In Week 21, Rennes ended a run of two successive defeats in all competitions by recording their first victory of 2013, beating SC Bastia 2-0 in Gueugnon thanks to goals from Romain Alessandrini (33') and Mevlut Erding (60'). - Rennes had been beaten by Ligue 2 outfit RC Lens in the French Cup and then lost 2-0 to Girondins de Bordeaux in their first league game of the new year. - Rennes had lost just one of their last five L1 games (3W) to close out 2012, winning the last two. - Rennes are seventh in the attack table with 31 goals scored. - Féret and Alessandrini have a team-high eight league strikes. 4 - They will play AS Saint-Etienne, who defeated LOSC Lille 7-6 on penalties after a goalless draw after extra-time 24 hours before, in the final at the Stade de France on 20 April. - ESTAC Troyes were beaten 2-1 at the Stade de la Route de Lorient on 29 November as Rennes reached the semi-finals. Pitroipa (8') put Rennes ahead, only for 17-year-old Corentin Jean (22') to equalise. Alessandrini (88') came up with the winner. - Rennes had beaten Arles-Avignon (L2) 1-0 in the last 16 and Nancy 3-2 in the Round of 32 with all of their ties this season having been played at home. - COUPE DE FRANCE: Rennes were knocked out in the Round of 64 in their first competitive games of 2013, losing 2-1 at Ligue 2 RC Lens. Julien Féret (81') looked to have taken the tie into extra-time with an equaliser, but Kévin Théophile-Catherine's own-goal gave the hosts victory. - TRANSFERS - IN: John Mensah (out of contract), Herita Ilunga (out of contract) - OUT: Yann M'Vila (Rubin Kazan, RUS), Yassine Jebbour (AS Nancy-Lorraine, 6-month loan) - INTERNATIONALS: Pitroipa (Burkina Faso) and Cheick Diarra (Mali) will play for their respective nations at the Africa Cup of Nations, which started in South Africa on 19 January. - Pitroipa left for South Africa only last Thursday after returning from his country's AFCON preparations to play in the Coupe de la Ligue semi-final against Montpellier. - SUSPENSIONS: None. - TEAM NEWS: Mensah was rested for the trip to Bastia but could return. Vincent Pajot was stretchered off last weekend, and faces six weeks out after tearing a hamstring. - TRIVIA - Ilunga, 30, who came through the Rennes youth academy, signed a six-month deal after training with the squad. He was a free agent. - The crowd of 28,028 at the Stade de la Route de Lorient to see the Coupe de la Ligue semi-final triumph over Montpellier was easily Rennes' best of the season, far outstripping the 22,276 fans who attended the L1 game against Bordeaux in Week Officials from the ASM Clermont Auvergne rugby club visited Rennes' training camp last week to look at the club's infrastructure and organisation. - Members of Rennes' vaunted youth academy were taken on a tour of a local car factory on Tuesday. - OLYMPIQUE DE MARSEILLE - GENERAL: Marseille come into the weekend in third place in Ligue 1. With 41 points (13W 2D 6L), they trail leaders Paris Saint-Germain and second-placed Olympique Lyonnais by a single point. - OM have by far the worst goal difference of the lead trio, however: PSG +25, OL +17, OM OM have the most wins of any L1 side this season, ahead of PSG and OL (both 12) and Rennes (11). - They won their first six league games in a row, becoming the first club to achieve such a feat since AS Monaco in However, they have won seven and lost six of their subsequent 15 matches. - After 21 games last season, Marseille sat in fifth place with 37 points, nine points behind leaders PSG and two clear of sixth-placed Rennes. - In their title-winning season, OM were second after 21 games on 39 points, eight adrift of leaders Bordeaux. - They have not had this many points this far into a season at any point since Ligue 1 returned to a 20-team format in Baup's side topped the table from Week 3, but slipped back to second after losing at Troyes in Week 9. They have not been lower than sixth all season. - Marseille won 3-2 at home to Montpellier last weekend. Lucas Mendes (v Bordeaux, Wk 13), Rod Fanni (v Lyon, Wk 10) and Charles Kaboré (v Lorient, Wk 16) are the three OM players to have been sent off in Ligue 1 this season. - If all games ended at half time, OM would be 12th in the table with just five wins to their name. Just nine of their 28 goals have been scored in the first half. - Goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano has started 150 Ligue 1 games in his career. - Souleymane Diawara made his 300th Ligue 1 appearance against Sochaux. - André-Pierre Gignac made his 200th Ligue 1 appearance against Montpellier. He has scored 59 top-flight goals. - AWAY FORM: With 21 points from 11 matches, OM have the second-best record in L1, bettered only by Paris Saint-Germain, who have a superior goal difference (+13 to +1). - Jordan Ayew is the team's leading scorer away from home with four goals. - Before losing in the snow at Sochaux, OM had won their previous three away games in L1. - Marseille have won all seven L1 away games in which they have taken the lead, and lost all four in which they fell behind. - COUPE DE LA LIGUE: As one of France's European representatives, holders Marseille earned a bye directly through to the last 16, where they were beaten 2-0 away by Paris Saint-Germain. - OM had won the Coupe de la Ligue in each of the last three seasons, winning 12 successive ties in the competition. - COUPE DE FRANCE: Marseille's Round of 32 tie at third-tier FC Rouen 1899, scheduled for Tuesday, was called off following a major gas leak in the Normandy city. The match has been rescheduled for 30 January. - OM beat Ligue 2 side EA Guingamp 2-1 after extra time in the Round of 64. -The match in Rouen was a 12,000 sell-out. -EUROPA LEAGUE: Marseille were eliminated in the group stage after finishing third in Group C with five points, six points adrift of second-placed Borussia Mönchengladbach. It was their second consecutive sixth-placed finish, and their best points return since Frédéric Antonetti took over as coach in However, they missed out on qualification for the Europa League on the final day of the campaign. - Last season, the Bretons topped the table after beating Dijon on the opening day. It was their worst finish to a campaign since they ended the in 15th place on 40 points, just above the relegation zone in an 18-team top flight.
