2 PREVIEW : AS SAINT-ETIENNE - LOSC LILLE Feature Preview LOSC Lille Métropole ended their title defence last season on the Ligue 1 podium, and the northerners begin their quest to improve on their third-placed finish at improving AS Saint-Etienne on Saturday. It will have been of scant consolation to coach Rudi Garcia that his team, title winners in , were considered one of the best - if not the best - teams to watch last season. They did, however, grab themselves a place in the Champions League to go along with another more than creditable league finish. The departure of Eden Hazard, contributor of 20 goals and 15 assists last season, would - in itself - constitute a major handicap to Lille improving on last season's efforts, but Paris Saint-Germain's multi-million euro summer spending spree has reduced still further the likelihood Garcia's men can repeat their feat of two seasons ago. "PSG have two teams who could win the title. To compete with them, we'd need another team to play with us," joked captain Rio Mavuba, who acknowledged the impact of Hazard's loss. "It's not easy to lose players every year. There was Adil Rami, Yohan Cabaye and Gervinho last summer, and now Eden, not to mention Pierre-Alain Frau and Ludovic Obraniak. That weighs heavy on the squad and on the first XI. We leave ourselves exposed each time, but we did manage to finish third last season. It was still a good season." While Hazard moved to Chelsea for some 40m euros, Salomon Kalou made the identical journey in the opposite direction for nothing. The Ivory Coast international - a Champions League winner last season - will team up with Marvin Martin, a 10m euro purchase from FC Sochaux-Montbéliard, to try and ensure Hazard's absence is not too keenly felt in terms of creativity, though Nolan Roux and Tulio de Melo, and perhaps Dimitri Payet, will have to up their return of goals with the prolific Belgian now enjoying pastures new. De Melo, who has been working with the former physio of Ronaldo in his native Brazil during the summer, ended last season strongly with five goals in his final 11 matches, and is likely to get the nod ahead of Roux for the northerners' bow. The Stade Geoffrey-Guichard has not been a happy hunting ground with five L1 victories a meagre return from 46 visits, and goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau is conscious Les Verts are - like his own club - moving in the right direction. "They're a team that's been on an upward trajectory for a number of years now. They've bought well, and give themselves the means to improve year-on-year," said the former PSG 'keeper, whose team will also begin their Champions League campaign this month. "It's a big game for us against a quality opponent. It's going to get us in the mood for a testing August. We can't wait for it to start." Though a title tilt is out of the question, optimism will also be high among the hosts. Christophe Galtier's men ended seventh last season, and though it was an improvement on their mid-table finish of the previous campaign, Les Verts stuttered to the end of the season, missing out on European qualification. The addition of midfielders Romain Hamouma and Renaud Cohade has strengthened Galtier's hand, and if Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can again prove the threat he was last season, in which he scored 16 times in Ligue 1, then L1's most successful club will feel the weight of their illustrious history ease just a little. "There's a lot of passion here and that creates a lot of pressure, but it's marvellous," said Galtier. 3 - HISTORY - The hosts hold the edge overwhelmingly over past meetings having registered 26 wins and 15 draws with LOSC Lille Métropole only picking up five victories. The total goal difference is in AS Saint-Etienne's favour. - Lille have won on their last two trips to Saint Etienne and are unbeaten on their last three visits. - Saint-Etienne had won two and drawn one of the duo's previous three encounters on home soil. - Between Lille's 3-1 victory in Saint Etienne in October 1952 and their 2-0 triumph in February 2006, they failed to win in 32 visits, losing on 20 occasions, including a run of eight straight losses between 1965 and LAST SEASON: Lille won the Week 5 meeting in Saint Etienne 3-1 thanks to goals from Eden Hazard (55', 73') and Ludovic Obraniak (86') with David Rozehnal's own-goal (8') the hosts' marker. Saint-Etienne's Loris Nery was sent off on 35 minutes. Hazard also struck in Lille's 3-0 win in Week 21. The Belgian tucked away a 50th-minute penalty before Nolan Roux scored twice in the closing stages (86', 87'). - AS SAINT-ETIENNE - GENERAL - Saint-Etienne only won one of their six pre-season friendlies - a 2-0 victory over second division Tours FC. They drew with Evian TG FC (1-1) and also with Ligue 2 opponents Gazelec Football Club d'ajaccio (1-1 ) and RC Lens (0-0) while losing to Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon (3-1) and OGC Nice (0-1). - Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang struck 16 times in L1 last season - the fourth-best individual tally in the French top flight - to end as the team's top scorer. He had never previously scored more than two goals in a L1 campaign. - Only ten L1 players provided more than the six assists Aubameyang contributed. - Goalkeeper Stéphane Ruffier was ever-present last season while Bakary Sako, Aubameyang and Laurent Batlles featured 36 times. - Saint-Etienne's tally of 49 goals was the eighth-best in L1 last season while their defensive record was the ninth-best (45 goals conceded). - HOME FORM - Saint-Etienne had the tenth-best record on home soil in L1 last season. They accumulated 31 points from their 19 games (9W 4D 6L). - Les Verts lost four and drew one of their last seven home games last season. - LAST SEASON - Les Verts ended the campaign in seventh place, four points off fifth and a further 13 adrift of the top three. - It marked an improvement of three places and eight more points than the season, and was their best finish since they ended the campaign in fifth. - Saint-Etienne bowed out of the Coupe de la Ligue at the Round of 16, losing 2-1 to neighbours Olympique Lyonnais. They were beaten on penalties by Girondins de Bordeaux in the Round of 64 after a 1-1 draw after extra-time. - TEAM NEWS - Mustapha Bayal Sall, who had been excluded from the first team squad, comes into contention after returning to favour with coach Christophe Galtier. - SUSPENSIONS - None - TRANSFERS - Saint-Etienne picked up Romain Hamouma from SM Caen while Renaud Cohade joined from Valenciennes after agreeing to the move midway through last season. Laurent Batlles retired after the last campaign while veteran goalkeeper Jérémie Janot joined Le Mans FC and Loris Nery has moved to Valenciennes FC. - TRIVIA - Aubameyang spent the season on loan at Lille from AC Milan. He made 14 L1 appearances (2 goals) for the northerners. - Aubameyang played for Gabon in the Olympic Games football tournament, exiting at the group stage. - During the summer break, left-back Faouzi Ghoulam extended his contract by two seasons through to Ghoulam and Joshua Guilavogui will take part in a training camp with the French Under-21 side at the national team training base of Clairefontaine, just outside Paris. - LOSC LILLE METROPOLE - GENERAL - Lille were unbeaten in pre-season, scoring five victories from six games. They registered a goalless draw with Portuguese giants Benfica, but beat both Spanish side Athletic Bilbao (3-1) and fellow Ligue 1 outfit Stade Rennais FC (1-0). - Lille struck 72 goals in L1 last season, a tally bettered only by Paris Saint-Germain (75). They had the fourth-best defensive record with 39 goals conceded. - Hazard's tally of 20 league goals was bettered by only two L1 players, while he also contributed 15 assists, the highest individual tally in the French top flight. - Roux scored nine L1 goals last season, though four of those were for his previous club, Stade Brestois Goalkeeper Mickaël Landreau, captain Rio Mavuba and Hazard played in all 38 L1 games last season. - AWAY FORM - Only PSG had a better away record than Lille last season. They tallied 33 points on their travels (9W 6D 4L), one fewer than the club from the capital. - They scored only 24 times away from home, but their tally of 16 goals conceded was comfortably the best in the division. - Lille lost three and won three of their last six away games in L1 last season. - CHAMPIONS LEAGUE - FC Copenhagen will be Lille's opponents in the two-legged play-off to reach the group stages. The first leg will be in Lille on 21/22 August with the return in Denmark on 28/29 August. - LAST SEASON - Champions in , Lille ended the following campaign in third on 74 points, five behind second-placed PSG and a further three adrift of champions Montpellier Hérault SC. - Lille tallied only two points fewer than in their title-winning season and scored four more goals. - Their podium finish means they have ended a L1 campaign outside the top five only twice in the last eight seasons (10th , 7th ). - Lille slipped out of European competition after finishing bottom of their Champions League group. 5 - TRANSFERS - While Hazard departed to Chelsea and Joe Cole and Mauro Cetto returned to Liverpool and Palermo respectively after the end of their loan spells, Lille signed Salomon Kalou from Chelsea and picked up Marvin Martin from FC Sochaux-Montbéliard. They also added Stade Brestois 29 goalkeeper Steeve Elana as back-up to Landreau with Vincent Enyeama going out on loan to Maccabi Tel-Aviv for the season while they signed full-back Djibril Sidibe from ESTAC Troyes. - TRIVIA - Dimitri Payet made 129 L1 appearances (19 goals) for Saint-Etienne between 2007 and his move to Lille in summer Payet is joined by teammates Martin, Mavuba and Mathieu Debuchy in Didier Deschamps' France squad for their friendly against Uruguay in Le Havre on 15 August. - Gueye has returned to training after helping Senegal to the quarter-finals of the Olympic football tournament. - Brazilian forward Tulio De Melo has been working on his fitness at the medical centre of Sao Paulo club Corinthians during the close season. He worked with Bruno Mazziotti, who was Ronaldo's physio in the latter stages of the legendary Brazilian's career. - After Debuchy made public his intention to leave the club this summer, Lille president Michel Seydoux declared the French international would stay as the club did not receive an offer matching their valuation of the right-back. 6 - The season saw Lille break a host of club records as they swept to a Ligue1-French Cup double, bringing major silverware to the north of France for the first time in over half a century. - Lille had last won the league in 1954, and the Coupe de France in 1955, ending a trophy drought whose only consolations had been four Ligue 2 titles (1964, '74, '78 and 2000) and an Intertoto Cup (2005). - Lille have won two Ligue 1 crowns (1946, '54) and finished runners-up five times (1948, '49, '50, '51 and 2005). They have won the French Cup five times (1946, '47, '48, '53, '55), and were beaten finalists twice (1945, '49). - Their third-placed finish in season earned them a place in the play-off round of the UEFA Champions League, their second successive stint in Europe's premier club competition after an absence dating back to the season. - Last season Lille finished fourth in Group B, behind Inter, CSKA Moscow and Trabzonspor with one win, three draws and two defeats. - In the Champions League campaign Lille played all their home matches at the Stade de France in Paris, because their regular home - the Stadium Métropole Villeneuve d'ascq - did not meet UEFA requirements.
