2 PREVIEW : LOSC LILLE MÉTROPOLE - MONTPELLIER HÉRAULT SC Feature Preview Typically slow starters Lille will be eager to register their first win of the new season when they play host to Montpellier at the Stadium Lille-Métropole. The northerners have struggled to hit the ground running in recent seasons, and last weekend's 1-1 draw at Nancy left LOSC without a win in their last nine league games played in the month of August. Indeed, their 2-1 home triumph against Bordeaux on August 31, 2008 is their only win in the calendar month in their last 17 attempts. Following their dramatic 5-4 defeat at the hands of Marseille in the Trophée des Champions, Lille's failure to beat a Nancy side that finished the game at the Stade Marcel-Picot with ten men was frustrating, especially as Mathieu Debuchy had given them the lead before Franck Béria put through his own net. However, Rudi Garcia's side utterly controlled the game, enjoying 75 percent possession and completing a remarkable 640 passes, the most since Garcia's arrival as coach in Florent Balmont was the star of the show, completing 103 passes all by himself - more than any player managed in a Ligue 1 game last season - but Garcia was also encouraged by the performance of a side containing summer signings Marko Basa, Benoît Pedretti and Dimitri Payet, as well as Pape Ndiaye Souare, who was making only his second start at left-back. "We're only at the start of the championship, and I think that we're on the right track," he said afterwards. "We played well as a team...some players aren't in top form yet, and they're going to have to work to get there. We also had a lot of players missing. We're going to have to win at home, hopefully starting next Saturday." Meanwhile, Montpellier's love affair with the month of August continued as they beat Auxerre 3-1 at the Stade de la Mosson on the opening day thanks to goals from Younès Belhanda, Geoffrey Dernis and last season's top scorer Olivier Giroud. René Girard's side are still unbeaten in games played in August since winning promotion to the top flight in a run of nine matches - and scoring three times provided a massive boost for a team that toiled desperately in front of goal last season. Last season's Coupe de la Ligue runners-up will be the underdogs against a Lille outfit that lost just once at home all last season, but with tough outings against Rennes and Lyon to follow, Girard is hopeful that they can take something from the long trip north. "We will go there without any fear," the 57-year-old said this week. "They had a remarkable season last season and this time around they have to try and demonstrate that that was no fluke and defend their title...will they have the same influence on the rest of the league as they did last year? I hope not. We will go there looking to take something from the game." However, despite Lille's reputation as slow starters, Geoffrey Dernis was not taken by suggestions that this might just be the best time to go to face the champions.?we will only know that after the game itself," said the man who started his career with the LOSC. "But its really up to us. We have a young team, and we have been together for a few seasons now. We just want to do well and pick up as many points as possible. We often do well in August, so I hope that continues this year." Montpellier travel north without Cyril Jeunechamp and Joris Marveaux, who are again suspended after sitting out last weekend's game. In addition, first-choice goalkeeper Geoffrey Jourdren is a doubt with a rib injury, so Laurent Pionnier, who played against Auxerre, is again standing by. Lille welcome back Aurélien Chedjou after suspension, while Dimitri Payet is expected to be fit despite missing France's draw with Chile with a bruised tibia. 3 -HISTORY: Lille have a good record in home meetings with Montpellier. They have won ten and drawn five of 16 previous Ligue 1 clashes, with Montpellier winning just once. -Montpellier's only top-flight win at Lille came in season Ibrahima Bakayoko scored a hat-trick in a 4-0 victory for the visitors, with Franck Sauzée also on target. -Last season, Lille won the corresponding fixture 3-1 in week eight, with Moussa Sow scoring a double and Gervinho also scoring. Olivier Giroud scored for Montpellier from the penalty spot. -The biggest win in this fixture was a 6-1 success for Lille in season LILLE -GENERAL: Lille ended week one 12th in the fledgling table after a 1-1 draw at Nancy. Mathieu Debuchy gave LOSC the lead only for a Franck Béria own-goal to hand the hosts a point. Pascal Berenguer was sent off for the home side late on. -Lille failed to win the game despite enjoying 75 percent of the possession. They completed a remarkable 640 passes, their highest total since Rudi Garcia took over as coach in Florent Balmont completed 103 passes himself, more than any player managed in one game last season. -Lille are unbeaten in eleven matches in all competitions - nine in the league and two in the French Cup - stretching back to week 30 last season when they were beaten 1-0 at Monaco. -LOSC scored more goals than any other side on their way to winning the title, netting 68 in 38 games. That figure was six more than the next most potent attack, Marseille. -Rudi Garcia's side conceded just 36 goals in Ligue 1 last season, with only Rennes (35) letting in fewer. -Moussa Sow was the top scorer in Ligue 1 last season, netting 25 goals. Sow was the first Lille player to finish top scorer in France since Jean Baratte shared the award with Jozef Humpal of Sochaux after scoring 26 in Gervinho - who has since departed for Arsenal - and Eden Hazard both provided ten assists. -Eden Hazard was voted Ligue 1 player of the year by his fellow professionals and coaches in Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. Hazard had been crowned young player of the year in each of the two previous seasons. - Rudi Garcia was voted coach of the year and Gervinho, Sow and Adil Rami joined Hazard in the team of the season. - Lille won only one of their four pre-season matches, drawing 1-1 with Bordeaux before losing 1-0 to Reims (L2), beating Valenciennes 2-0, and losing 1-0 to Saint-Etienne. - Lille have now failed to win any of their last nine Ligue 1 games played in August, and just one of their last 17 (one win, ten draws, six defeats). Their only win in the holiday month in recent seasons was a 2-1 defeat of Bordeaux on August 31, Ludovic Obraniak scored the winner that day after Michel Bastos had cancelled out Fernando Cavenaghi's opener. -HOME FORM: LOSC had the best home record in Ligue 1 last season, taking 44 points from 13 wins, five draws and one defeat. Marseille were the only visiting side to win at the Stadium Lille-Métropole (3-1 in week ten). -They scored 40 goals in their 19 home league games, with their biggest win a 5-0 defeat of Arles-Avignon in week 33. -INTERNATIONALS: Ludovic Obraniak played 80 minutes of Poland's 1-0 friendly win against Georgia in Lubin. Moussa Sow played for Senegal in a 2-0 loss to Morocco in Dakar, while Marko Basa played an hour of Montenegro's 3-2 defeat in Albania. Gianni Bruno was part of the Belgium under-21 squad for the midweek game against Turkey, but Aurélien Chedjou's Cameroon saw their scheduled match against El Salvador, due to be held in Los Angeles, postponed. -TROPHÉE DES CHAMPIONS: Lille lost 5-4 to Marseille in the traditional season-opener in Tangiers. Lille led 2-0 thanks to goals from Florent Balmont (9') and Eden Hazard (57'). André Ayew got one back for OM (71') only for Moussa Sow (72') to make it 3-1. In a crazy finish, Jérémy Morel (85'), Loïc Rémy (87') and Ayew (90+1', pen) had Marseille 4-3 up, Marko Basa (90+2') equalised, before another Ayew penalty (90+5') won it for Didier Deschamps' side. David Rozehnal will be out for several weeks after undergoing an operation on a knee injury, while Tulio De Melo (tibia) is still doing rehab work, but Dimitri Payet is expected to be fit despite missing France's draw with Chile in midweek with a bruised tibia. SUSPENSIONS: Aurélien Chedjou is available again after missing the draw at Nancy through suspension. -MONTPELLIER -GENERAL: Montpellier were one of only two sides to claim home wins in week one as they beat Auxerre 3-1 at the Stade de la Mosson. Younès Belhanda (36'), Geoffrey Dernis (75') and Olivier Giroud (90+1') scored for René Girard's side, while Alain Traoré (45') netted for the AJA. -That result allowed Montpellier to top the table last Saturday evening, although they ended week one in second place behind Rennes on goal difference. -That win was only Montpellier's second in their last eleven competitive games, stretching back into last season. They ended with three straight defeats after beating Lorient 3-1 at home in week 35. -Montpellier struggled for goals last season, netting just 32 in 38 league games. Only relegated Arles-Avignon (21) scored fewer. They conceded 43 goals. -Olivier Giroud was Montpellier's top scorer in his debut Ligue 1 season, netting 12 times. Souleymane Camara followed him with four. -Montpellier have received more red cards than any other Ligue 1 side in the last two seasons, with a total of 15. -Montpellier kicked off their pre-season programme with a 6-1 win against a Lozère regional select side. They then beat Arles-Avignon (1-0) and Marseille (1-0) before drawing with Toulouse (2-2) and then losing to Bordeaux (3-1). -Montpellier have a superb record in the month of August. Since winning promotion back to Ligue 1 in 2009, they are unbeaten in nine games in the calendar month (five wins, four draws). -AWAY FORM: Montpellier won five, drew six and lost eight games on the road last season, collecting 21 of their 47 points away from home. -They managed just 11 goals on their travels, and lost their last four away games of the campaign (2-0 at Bordeaux, week 38, 2-0 at Caen, week 36, 1-0 at Auxerre, week 34, 3-2 at Lyon in week 32). -Montpellier's last away win was at Toulouse on April 2, when Souleymane Camara scored the only goal of the game. -INTERNATIONALS: Abdelhamid El Kaoutari and Younès Belhanda both played for Morocco in their 2-0 friendly win away to Souleymane Camara's Senegal in Dakar on Wednesday. Marco Estrada appeared as a late substitute for Chile in their 1-1 draw with France at Montpellier's own Stade de la Mosson. -Rémy Cabella, Fodé Koita and Benjamin Stambouli participated in a France under-21 squad get-together at Clairefontaine. -Goalkeeper Jonathan Ligali is currently with the France squad at the under-20 World Cup in Colombia. Francis Smerecki's side play Nigeria in the quarter-finals on Sunday after beating Ecuador 1-0 in the last 16. -COUPE DE LA LIGUE: Last season's beaten finalists, Montpellier will entertain Ligue 2 outfit Amiens in the third round of this season's competition. LOSC Lille Métropole - The season saw Lille break a host of club records as they swept to a Ligue1-French Cup double, bringing major silverware to the north of France for the first time in over half a century. - Lille had last won the league in 1954, and the Coupe de France in 1955, ending a trophy drought whose only consolations had been four Ligue 2 titles (1964, '74, '78 and 2000) and an Intertoto Cup (2005). - Lille have won two Ligue 1 crowns (1946, '54) and finished runners-up five times (1948, '49, '50, '51 and 2005).
