2 PREVIEW : VALENCIENNES FC - GIRONDINS DE BORDEAUX Feature Preview Valenciennes and Bordeaux are still chasing their first wins of the new campaign as they go head-to-head at the northern club's brand-new Stade du Hainaut on Saturday. Bordeaux are enduring their worst start to a season in 11 years, with Les Girondins having taken just two points from a possible nine under new coach Francis Gillot. The man who led Sochaux to fifth place last season can take comfort from the fact that his side have recovered from an opening-day defeat at home to Saint-Etienne by drawing with ten men at Lorient and then claiming a point at home to Auxerre last weekend, when Yoan Gouffran's 20th Ligue 1 goal was cancelled out by an Alain Traoré strike in the second half. Back in , Bordeaux failed to win any of their first five games before going on to finish fourth, but Gillot is wary of the need for his side to start winning in order to avoid a season of playing catch-up. "Right now we are not being compensated for the work we are putting in. I think we could quite easily have two or three points more at this stage," insisted Gillot, who was born in the North of France and began his playing career at Valenciennes, making over 100 appearances. "We don't have them, so we need to go out and get the points on the board. We are only three weeks into a season that lasts for nine months, but we absolutely have to start getting results." "We cannot afford to let doubts creep into our game, and we must avoid losing too much confidence. Our job is all about getting points and we don't want to be in a position where we are having to chase other teams all the time." The 2009 champions have been boosted ahead of the trip north by the return to full fitness of influential defender Marc Planus. The French international, endured an injury-ravaged campaign and has been forced to sit out the start of this season due to an adductor injury. He is set to feature in Valenciennes, while Grégory Sertic is also available after suspension, but David Bellion is still out with an ankle injury, and Henrique - whose last-gasp goal earned Bordeaux a point at Lorient two weeks ago - sat out the Auxerre game with a knee problem. Gillot has taken over a side who have struggled badly on their travels in recent times, with Bordeaux having managed just one win in their last 14 away games in all competitions stretching back to November last year. With that in mind, they would probably rather have avoided going to Valenciennes, who can boast a superb home record in recent times. VA's final season at the old Stade Nungesser saw them lose just twice on home soil, and they are unbeaten in 12 matches as hosts going back to a 2-1 reverse at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in December last year. Like Bordeaux, Valenciennes have experienced a summer of change, with coach Philippe Montanier departing for Real Sociedad in Spain and being replaced by Daniel Sanchez, who arrived from Ligue 2 outfit Tours. Sanchez has also yet to oversee a win this season, with Valenciennes currently second-bottom with just one point. However, they made life tough for Paris Saint-Germain before going down 2-1 in the capital last weekend, and are now looking for a first victory at their impressive new home after being held to a goalless draw there by Brest a fortnight ago. "There are a lot of positives to take from our performances so far, but the fact that we have just one point is worrying," admits Sanchez, who spent two years on the staff at Bordeaux under Élie Baup between 2001 and "We cannot be satisfied with our situation just now. There is no need to panic but we need to get a result against Bordeaux." Valenciennes, who this week completed the signing of 24-year-old Brazilian defender Carlos Gil from Cruzeiro, are without Rudy Mater and Vincent Aboubakar due to injury. 3 -HISTORY: Valenciennes have played host to Bordeaux on 24 previous occasions in Ligue 1, and have the edge, with nine wins to Bordeaux's seven. There have been eight draws. -Bordeaux's only win in this fixture in recent years came in their title-winning season, when they emerged 2-1 victors in week 35. Gaël Danic gave VA the lead with a penalty, but Fernando equalised, and Yoann Gourcuff scored a late winner before Siaka Tiéné and Luigi Pieroni were sent off for the hosts. -Last season's corresponding fixture ended in a 2-2 draw in week 28. A Danic double had VA 2-0 up, before Jussiê and Michaël Ciani both scored in the last nine minutes for Bordeaux. -VALENCIENNES -GENERAL: Valenciennes lie 19th in the table after three games, with one point from three games. -Daniel Sanchez has yet to register a win as VA coach. In week one, his side lost 1-0 at Caen. In week two they drew 0-0 at home to Brest, before going down 2-1 at Paris Saint-Germain last weekend. -Kévin Gameiro (39') gave PSG the lead at the Parc des Princes, before Rémi Gomis (45+1') levelled. Nenê's penalty (64') won it for the capital club. -The Valenciennes team that faced PSG: Penneteau; Ducourtioux (c), Isimat-Mirin, Angoua, Bong; Sánchez, Gomis (Kadir 71'), Cohade (Nam 87'); Danic, Dossevi (Samassa 79'), Pujol. -Valenciennes have now won only one of their last seven league games, stretching back into last season. Their only victory in that time came on the last day of , when they beat Nice 2-1 in their last match at the old Stade Nungesser. -VA finished 12th last season on 48 points, but only secured their top-flight status in the final round of games in week Valenciennes drew 18 of their 38 Ligue 1 games in Only Auxerre (19) drew more. -Former Nantes striker Grégory Pujol was the club's top scorer in with a personal best season haul of 17 goals. Then they beat Angers 2-1, before going down 2-0 to Lille, 2-1 to Gent of Belgium, and 1-0 to German champions Borussia Dortmund. Their final pre-season game ended in a 1-1 draw against NEC Nijmegen of the Netherlands. -HOME FORM: Valenciennes drew 0-0 with Brest in their only league game at their brand-new 25,000-capacity Stade du Hainaut home to date. The match was watched by a crowd of 19,000. -Last season, they had the sixth-best home record in the entire division, with eight wins, nine draws and just two defeats at the Nungesser.
