We have just returned from the 2009 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show, held between May 21st to 24th. Also held on the following weekend was our latest Boatbuilding Workshop which incorporated a sailing day as well. This had the same program as our last well received Workshop held in February. We are also happy to report that our European Production Distributors are making good progress with their CE certified Spirited 380 production models. There has been strong interest from the European market for more modern performance designs. Boatbuilding Workshop & Sail Day- Feb 2009 The first for 2009, our Boatbuilding Workshop in Hervey Bay was held on the weekend of the 28th of February/1st of March at FCCM s factory. The location together with our full schedule of activities seemed to be the key to this very successful weekend. Hervey Bay was the ideal location for sailing, with beautiful QLD weather. ICE, FCCM s recently launched brand new company Spirited 380 was generously offered to us for our Sunday sails. With a turn out of around 50 attendees the Saturday began with our usual boat building workshop program; boat building demonstrations by Craig, followed by presentations from our suppliers; ATL Composites, Ullman Sails, David Lambourne Rigging and Harken. ATL and FCCM s Z Press joining demonstration was also included followed by a BBQ lunch enjoyed by all with an opportunity for discussion of the day s program. During the day everyone had the opportunity to view FCCM s latest Spirited 380 under construction, another exciting project for an overseas client. The day was wound down over a cold beer with plenty of Multihull discussions. The stand out activity for the weekend seemed to be the sailing on the Sunday. The weather was beautiful but a little on the light side in regards to breeze. There were however some nice gusts to show off the Spirited 380 s speed and acceleration. These conditions also provided an opportunity to fly the Screecher which demonstrated how useful this sail is in lighter airs. Our thanks go to all who attended and in particular FCCM for hosting this event.

2 PAGE 2 Sanctuary Cove Boatshow on again! We had a slightly different flavour at this year s show with some wild weather lashing Sanctuary Cove just prior to opening. Luckily we were able to deliver Ice safely to her berth before this weather system came in with full strength. We were located on A finger in berth 13. Ice is FCCM s own company Spirited 380 recently launched in Hervey Bay. This boat shows off some different types of finishes throughout as well as some modern looking decal s on the hulls. She has already been publicized in the latest edition of Multihull World Magazine for anyone who hasn t seen her. The show was still a success despite the wet weather and decreased numbers recorded for the show. We would like to thank everyone who came to see us. 3 PAGE 3 Delivery to Sanctuary Cove and back The delivery of Ice down to Sanctuary Cove from Hervey Bay was a fun filled trip. The crew consisted of Jeff Anderson (skipper/owner), Hugh Peacock and Craig Schionning. The trip got underway bright and early on Saturday morning (16th May) with glorious weather and a quiet meandering down the Sandy Straits towards the Wide Bay Bar. On approach to the bar the crew spotted another catamaran in the distance and was delighted to find out it was another Spirited 380 sistership, Free Spirited under full sail heading North. After some waving and appraisal with the binoculars from both boats, Ice continued on her way. With this as the talking point the crew approached Inskip Point and the entrance to the bar. As if this was not enough, the crew couldn t believe their luck when behold Zinc yet another Spirited 380 had just crossed the bar! Craig quickly jumped on the phone to exchange a few pleasantries with Dale the owner and find out what condition the bar was in. Dale informed him that it was flat calm and wished them well on their way as did Craig. So with almost no wind the crew proceeded across the calm bar and headed South. Luckily the wind started to build after dark and the crew had some great sailing all the way into Moreton Bay where the famous Moreton Bay chop lived up to it s name and engine power was required to deliver some drive as the wind died out. Arriving in Manly on day break of Sunday morning, the crew had a quick catch up sleep after which they went up to the Marina for a big breakfast. After a stop over in Manly harbour, Jeff and Hugh finished the final leg of the trip down the broadwater to Sanctuary Cove on Tuesday. Craig had to fly home to prepare for the show. After the show, armed with the same crew, Ice set off from the fuel jetty at Sanctuary Cove marina at around 8am. Because of the after effects of the wild weather, the seas were still too rough offshore causing the Gold Coast Seaway to be closed so it was decided to travel up the Broadwater once again. Although there were some nice light breezes it was difficult to take advantage of them until out into Moreton Bay where Ice could stretch her legs. Broad reaching up the bay, the crew could start to have some fun, sailing at 12 to 15 knots in around 10 knots of true wind. Free Spirited sighted in the Sandy Straits. Jeff was keeping in constant contact with Tin Can Bay Coast Guard (TCBCG) about the state of the Wide Bay Bar which they advised against crossing until Wednesday but it still may be too dangerous to cross then, in their opinion. A decision was made to stop in at Tangalooma, Moreton Ilsand for the night which was most enjoyable. After an early call to TCBCG, there was no change to the bar but it was difficult to simply sit around waiting! So it was decided to make for Double Island Point for Tuesday night and hope that the bar would be open for Wednesday. As they cleared the top of Moreton Bay and headed into deep water the breeze increased to 12 to 15 knots as did the boat speed, reaching speeds of 15 to 17 knots easily with full main and screecher flying, Ice was really starting to move! Good speeds under main and screecher in light airs. Now that Ice was further offshore she was surfing the big swells and enjoying the motion. It was yet further testament to this design of how easilydriven and comfortable it is in the open ocean. Unfortunately the wind died off again and they were forced to motor most of the afternoon through to Double Island Point, dropping anchor just after dark. Anchored and enjoying a Sun downer. The next morning saw the top of the tide at around 10am so the ideal time to cross the bar would an hour or so before. Hugh called TCBCG en route to get an update on the bar and was told that it was still too dangerous and they would not advise crossing it! This was not the news the crew wanted to hear. Not eager to proceed all the way back to Mooloolaba they agreed that there was no harm in checking it out. On approach there were two other boats with similar intentions and the first made a run for it. Watching this boat cross clearly demonstrated that there appeared to be no real danger so with the boat and crew prepared for the unexpected Jeff steered Ice to the first waypoint on the bar. After a fairly un eventful crossing they headed once again up the Sandy Straits towards Hervey Bay. After some nice sailing legs under main and screecher Ice was tied up in her berth at around 2.30pm. Boatbuilding Workshop and Sailing Day - May 2009 Following the Sanctuary Cove Boatshow we held our latest Hervey Bay Workshop event. This was run the very next weekend after the show on the 30/31st of May. Many attendants came from the show once becoming interested in the Spirited range of designs. We had a good turn out of over 25 keen enthusiasts interested in both DIY building or having FCCM build them a boat to sail away. Some interested parties turned up only for the Sailing Day on Sunday whereas some wanted to find out more about both options. Adhering to our usual program, the Boatbuilding Demonstrations ran all Saturday morning followed by a BBQ and drinks. FCCM s latest Spirited 380 project is well underway and was available for viewing. This was of keen interest to everyone there. Lorraine Murray was there representing ATL Composites and happy to assist with any technical queries about their products.

5 PAGE 5 Latest Boatbuilding Workshop and Sailing Day! Ctd... The first sailing group headed out on Sunday morning with some good gusty South Easterly breezes of about 18 to 20 knots. Ice really got moving at some good speeds as we headed out towards Moon banks. On the way back to the harbour we encountered the first of some gusty rain squalls coming over the horizon. Unfortunately these lead to us having to cancel the afternoon sail due to the weather worsening. After seeing the disappointed faces we have decided to re schedule this sail for Friday the 26th of June. So if anyone else would like to join us please let us know and we will do our best to fit you in. Launchings High Spirited The 8th Spirited 380 was launched in Port Stephens Dec 2008 and had its shake down cruise to Sydney and back. The owner will be sailing this boat to Indonesia where it will be based. I m sure we will hear more about this boat as the owner is keen to join in the local racing scene. The boat is fitted with twin escape hatches in the hulls and other performance features. We wish the owner all the best for the trip and future racing. The 9th Spirited 380 was launched in Hervey Bay by FCCM on the 20th of February. This was the week before ICE our February Workshop, in fact the shake down test sail was carried out on the Friday leading up to the Workshop. Jeff Anderson the owner is planning to do some cruising around his local area before heading off on some extended trips. Ice has been well appointed for comfortable cruising. We can report that Ice sails beautifully as to be expected from this design. She has since carried out her delivery trip to SCBS and back as featured on the previous pages.

6 PAGE 6 Yanmar Saildrives FCCM are using Yanmar 21hp Saildrives on their latest Spirited 380 they are building. This is an interesting development and we are keen to see how they compare with the Nanni s in terms of performance, noise, vibration and fuel economy. The Yanmar s come with Gori 2 blade folding propellers which have an excellent name in the industry. We expect that there may be improvement in efficiency and performance due to their good design. FCCM expect to have this current 380 launched in the next 2 to 3 months at which time they will carry out sea trials for this boat. We will keep everyone up to date with the latest on these engines. We now also have the Yanmar engine beds moulded to suit the Spirited 380 hull including the bonding flange. Simply glue these in, no taping required! Spirited 380 Scale Model update... Our Spanish Distributor, Catamaranes Ecologicos, have made some good progress on their scale model project. They have now completed the structure and it looks very cute! They are enjoying this little project even more as they build it alongside their full sized Spirited 380 company boat. There have been some refinements made to the model kit to make it easier to assemble and also more costeffective for delivery. The team from Catamaranes Ecologicos are planning to use the model for display at the numerous boat shows they will be attending across Europe. Our French Distributor has now also ordered a scale model kit for promotional purposes. Spirited 230 Power update! The local builder building the Spirited 230 Power is progressing steadily. Craig went to lend a hand to help turn the hull structure over in readiness for installing the bulkheads and internals. With the assistance of seven other helpers the hull was lifted off the MDF build frame and sat down on the lawn. Then a couple of the MDF frames were reinstalled into the hull for extra support while turning. The frames also had an extension which was very useful to pivot the hull on while turning over. With a safety line connected to the far side of the hull the hull rolled very easily. Once rolled, the hull was lifted across into the hull cradles and levelled. Since then, the bulkheads and some of the internals have been installed. It is very surprising how much room is in this little boat! We will keep everyone updated as this project progresses.

7 PAGE 7 Spirited 480 component moulds... The Spirited 480 moulds are underway with the hull plug nearing completion. Once the plug is finalized the mould can be constructed. The hull shape is looking very streamlined and simply a sleeker version of the Spirited 380. Spirited Designs specializes in pre cut kit assembly using cadassisted technology. To design cutting edge multihulls you need to use cutting edge technology and software. Craig s practical building background combined with a good eye for modern flowing lines creates a good sound basis for not only a modern, safe good looking boat but an easy to build assembly process using the best choice in modern materials available.
