1 McT English Summer Reading - JUNIORS Required Reading for Junior Honors and CP2: This summer, you will be reading and annotating the novel 1984 by George Orwell. The novel is set in a dystopian society, which is ruled by a totalitarian government, similar to Hitler's Germany, Stalin s Russia, or present North Korea. A dystopian society is a futuristic, imagined universe in which oppressive societal control and the illusion of a perfect society are maintained through corporate, bureaucratic, technological, moral, or totalitarian control (Readwritethink.org). You may the teacher at johnstc@mcgill-toolen.org if you have any questions. *This assignment includes two parts: 1) annotation of the novel 2) typed assignment, which must be submitted to turnitin.com by 11:59 PM, Sunday August 18, 2013 **The typed assignment (Part 2) can be submitted to turnitin.com any time during the summer! Do not procrastinate! Assignment: Part 1: 1. Choose two of the motifs listed below to track throughout the novel as you read. In your novel, underline the motif each time you encounter it. Compare and contrast the motif to our society today. Annotate by making notes in the margin. The persona of Big Brother Government s use of Technology Newspeak Thought Police or Thought crime Sexuality Marriage and family Use of colors Comparison of Julia and Winston s wife The War O Brien Emmanuel Goldstein Truth *You will turn in your annotated novel on the first day of school, Monday, August 19th!
2 Part 2: 1. First, create a turnitin.com account, and join our class! (See handout.) CLASS ID for Honors: CLASS ID for CP2: PASSWORD: jackets PASSWORD: jackets PART 2 IS DUE TO TURNITIN.COM BY SUNDAY, AUGUST 18 th by 11:59 PM 2. Create a table in a word processing document for each motif you tracked. You should have two separate tables in your document. (Click Table and Insert Table. Then, choose 2 columns and 6 rows). 3. Each table should include at least five of the direct quotes you have underlined in your novel which pertain to the motif. You should have underlined many more than five direct quotes for each motif! 4. List the direct quotes in the left- hand column of your table, followed by a parenthetical citation (last name of the author and page number of the quote). **All page numbers should correlate with underlined passages in your novel! 5. For each direct quote, analyze in at least 75 words for Honors or 50 words for CP2 how the motif (in the context of the direct quote) compares and contrasts to an aspect of today s society. Example: Motif: Emmanuel Goldstein Direct Quote and Parenthetical Citation Analysis As usual, the face of Emmanuel Goldstein, the Enemy of the People, had flashed onto the screen. There were hisses here and there among the audience. The little sandy-haired woman gave a squeak of mingled fear and disgust (Orwell 11). Explanation of at least 75 words for Honors or 50 words for CP2, analyzing how the motif (in context of the direct quote) compares and contrasts to a particular aspect of today s society.
