Fish should never be held out of water for longer than you can hold your breath. WMFFC November Presidents message Large Trout Why do trout grow big in some waters and not in others? Every fy fsherman (women) loves to catch larger trophy sized fsh for that grip grin picture. No one ever forgets the thrill of castng and landing a massive rising fsh. But one should stop and think how that fsh got big in the frst place. I was reading similar artcle in a 2015 May/June Montana Outdoors magazine recently and the conclusions in that artcle can be applied here in Arizona. Basically, there are several conditons that entce fsh to grow large: Lots of food, geology, chemistry, fertlity, and room to grow. First: to grow big trout in a lake or stream there needs the right combinatons of water chemistry and fertlity which are determined by a watershed s geology. Carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous in the soil are building blocks for algae, which feeds insects, which in turn, feed the needs of a growing big trout. Secondly, big trout need room to grow. Just as a bull elk needs to escape hunters for 5-6 years to grow to trophy size, a trout can t reach trophy size if it ends up on some one s dinner plate. Geology and water defne the physical and chemical characteristcs to fsh growth, but fsh density determines the rest. I.e. all streams and lakes have fxed carrying capacites and can produce only so many pounds of fsh per acre. So with the above in mind, I wonder what the newly introduced tger trout will do to fsh densites in the lakes when they are introduced.

3 Announcements November 2015 Speaker: Bud Huth, a local area resident and club member. Bud has been fy fshing for over 60 years. He is an accomplished fy ter and expert in fy fshing entomology. Bud has fshed the waters of Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, etc. Bud will talk about Fly Fishing Entomology in Elementary Terms. January 2016 Speaker: Steve Hofmann, Club President. Steve, a retred mechanical engineer, will talk about Fly Reels. How they are made, reel maintenance, and setng the drag. His talk is based on a recent tour of the Ross fy reel manufacturing facility in Montrose, CO. February 2016 Speaker: Bob Bowers. Bob has been fy fshing for over 50 years and has been a past president of the WMFFC. Bob will talk about his family fy fshing vacaton to the North Western States plus salt water fy fshing of the coast of San Diego for blue fn tuna. th Don t forget the Club Christmas Party December 5. The Christmas party will be held at Torreon Cabin Restaurant. Doors open at 5:30 pm, Dinner at 6:30. The Cost is $18 per person. Pay at the Nov. meetng or at the door. 4 Outing Report for October Submitted by Steve Hofmann During the October monthly meetng, the club members voted to have an outng at Big th Lake on Saturday, Oct 24. Fishing reports at Big Lake had been partcularly good for th Cuthroat trout in railroad cove. The lake didn t disappoint. The weather on the 24 was perfect for fy fshing. Approximately 7-8 members showed up for a great day of fy fshing. I think the members who fshed were: Dennis Jones, Bill Langdon, Don Gage, Dave Behar, Richard Dryer, Len Croteau and Steve Hofmann (forgive me if you were there and I didn t see you.) Most of the Cuthroat trout were caught in shallow water feet. Most members fshed out of pontoon type boats with a 2 fy rig... i.e. midges under an indicator. The rumored hot fy was a grey midge pupa ted on a #16 or #18 hook. See below for my version of the fy. On Saturday, Richard Dryer and I fshed from the shore, as my boat trailer had a fat tre on the way to the lake. We caught several smaller fsh on a light grey Hare s ear fy. Most of the same people above also fshed the following Sunday in railroad cove for a repeat good day of fy fshing. Dennis was reported to have a caught 20 + Cuthroat on Saturday. Bob Bowers reported catching four Cut s in the 18 inch range. Below is one of my 17 inch Cuthroat from the Sunday outng. My larger Cuts were caught in deeper water (5-8 feet) on the Bill Langdon version of the Montana Nymph. Brats were served for lunch on Saturday for those who showed up.

6 Timing Tips for Better Fishing Submitted by Dennis Jones Primary best fshing tmes: 90 Minutes before and afer sunrise and sunset 90 Minutes before and afer moon rise and moon set Secondary best fshing tmes: On the day of and four days following the peak full moon and full new (dark) moon Fishing during the daily rise or set of the sun and moon during these key monthly moon phases is paramount. Change-of-seasons: when the days are quickly becoming longer in the spring and suddenly becoming shorter in the fall. 8 October Monthly Meeting Minutes Submitted by Ellen Hofmann Meetng was held October 21, 2015 at the Timbre Mesa Fire Staton #13 in Lakeside, AZ. Meetng called to order at 6:30 pm by Steve Hofmann, President and followed by The Pledge of Allegiance. New members: Eric Smitz was introduced Guests: Steve Hofmann introduced the speaker of the night Katrina Lynch, a Physician Assistant who specializes in Dermatology. Treasury Report: Doris Miller was absent due to recent right wrist surgery. San Juan River Wounded Veterans Trip Report: Barry Curseaden gave an overview of the recent club VETS trip on October th. Barry spend ~ $4500. He had a total of more than $5000 that he could spend due to many donatons besides the $3500 that the Club had allocated for the trip. The trip was a great success (the Vets were very thankful), nobody got injured and lots of big fsh were landed. Next years 2016 trip will take place around the same tme in October. Conservaton: Mike Styvaert reported on the ongoing and fnished projects. No new projects are going on at this tme. Silver Creek Opening Day: Kevin Widner gave a report of the opening day October 1, A big thanks to all the club members who made it a successful day. General Announcement: October 2015 outng will be this Saturday at Big Lake. Meet at Railroad Cove for lunch. Christmas Party will be December 5 at the Cabin Restaurant at Torreon. More info on menu at cost will follow soon. Fish Tales were told and the Rafe was conducted.

9 Speaker The meetng ended with an excellent presentaton by Kristna Lynch MPAS/PAC. She spoke about the dangers of prolonged sun exposure and how to avoid skin ailments due to sun exposure. Meetng was adjourned ~ 7:55. Ellen Hofmann, Secretary

10 October Board Meeting Minutes Submitted by Ellen Hofmann Meetng was held on October 19 at R.T. Black Bull restaurant in Show Low AZ. Board Members present: Dennis Jones, Don Gage, Barry Curseaden, Ellen Hofmann and Steve Hofmann. General Members present: Ted Lane, Bob Henry and Mike Styvaert. Meetng was opened at 8:30 am by President Steve Hofmann. He started by thanking Dennis Jones and Ted Lambert for taking over the Presidents dutes while he was out of state for 6 weeks. Agenda Items: Treasures Report: Doris Miller was absent due to recent wrist surgery. Steve has checked account balance and there is approx. $ in the club account San Juan Wounded Veterans Trip: Barry Curseaden gave a report on the recent trip. There were four new Veterans and three alumni (Eric, Brian and Barbara) present. Total cost of the trip was $ (total breakdown available upon request). The WMFFC had allocated $3500 to the trip and because of other monetary donatons Barry had around $5000 to spend on the trip. Monies lef over are in a separate secton of the WMFFC account and will be spend on future ventures geared towards Veterans. Barry will send thank you notes with a picture to all donors and next years trip will take place around the same tme in October. In the coming months the WMFFC might look into submitng an artcle to the Arizona White Mountain Magazine and again become a member of the local Chamber of Commerce to potentally atract more donors for next years trip. Opening Day of Catch and Release Season at Silver Creek was on October 1, That day always involves Wounded Veterans and the WMFFC is always involved in many diferent ways like helping put on the fies, helping cast, helping to land the fsh, providing food, setng up and helping clean up. There was a large artcle in the local paper but unfortunately WMFFC was not mentoned. Conservaton: Mike Styvaert gave a report on ongoing and completed items. Aerators on Crescent Lake is stll an ongoing project. Possible aerators on Luna Lake.

11 Possible aerators on the ponds behind F&G ofce in Pinetop. Carnero Lake ditch repair project was completed and was successful in keeping water in the lake this summer. Also, the lake might get a culvert pipe in the inlet ditch next year. Christmas Party: Christmas Party will be December 5, 2015 at The Cabin Restaurant at Torreon. We stll need to get some kind of entertainment. At the next meetng Steve will menton donatons for door prizes. An fier will go out the beginning of November to make all members aware of the party. Guest Speakers: We stll need a guest speaker for November. The Manager of the local Sportsmen s Warehouse can be a speaker in the future but is not ready for November October Fishing Outng: There was no outng scheduled for October so at this tme the club members present decided to go to Big Lake and meet at Railroad Cove for lunch.
