With the win, Fort Wayne earned a split in the four-game series. Cosgrove became just the second TinCaps pitcher this season to go six innings as a starter. Just like fellow left-hander Aaron Leasher who did the same last week against Great Lakes (5-13), Cosgrove blanked the Loons. The 21-year-old from Staten Island, N.Y., struck out six as he scattered five hits and two walks. His performance was necessary as Great Lakes starter Wills Montgomerie kept Fort Wayne (8-13) off the scoreboard for his five innings. The TinCaps finally broke the ice in the road seventh. After catcher Juan Fernandez pulled a double to left field off reliever Riley Ottesen to lead off the frame, Fort Wayne's young lineup executed situational approaches. Left fielder Jack Suwinski then flew out deep to right field allowing Fernandez to tag to third. Second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza grounded out to first base, enabling Fernandez to score the game's first run. The 'Caps added insurance with three runs in the eighth that was sparked by center fielder Jeisson Rosario leading off with a triple to left-center field. Fort Wayne then scored thanks to a fielder's choice grounder, a single that barely got into center field, an error, and a wild pitch after a sacrifice bunt. Rosario and right fielder Tirso Ornelas both had two hits in the game. First baseman Jalen Washington reached base three times with a double and two walks. Following Cosgrove, Jared Carkuff tossed three innings of relief to earn the save. The only run for the Loons came with two outs in the home ninth on a solo homer by Jared Walker.

6 South Bend s bats come alive in 17-4 win over Hot Rods Roberto Caro and Miguel Amaya each go 3/6 in win Bowling Green, KY: After scoring just three runs combined in their doubleheader versus the Bowling Green Hot Rods yesterday, the South Bend Cubs entered Wednesday night s game in Bowling Green with a record of 7-9. Tonight, they got back to just a game under.500 with a 17-4 win over the Hot Rods. Falling behind early for the third straight game against the Bowling Green, the Cubs bats responded against Hot Rods starter Resly Linares. With prior success against Linares earlier this season where they scored seven runs off of the lefty at Four Winds Field, South Bend answered again with six combined runs in the 3rd and 4th inning. Linares lasted just 3.1 innings while allowing four runs on five hits. He walked three batters, struck out four, and threw a wild pitch. For South Bend, right hander Erich Uelmen earned his first professional victory on Wednesday. After starting this season 0-2, Uelmen took the mound for his third start. In five innings, he allowed four runs and struck out two. Right hander Brendan King tossed three innings of scoreless ball and struck out four batters. Manuel Rodriguez finished the game and struck out three batters in the 9th inning. As a group, the Cubs struck out nine batters on the night. Offensively, the Cubs bats plated the most runs of any game this season. The previous highest came in the prior series against Bowling Green at Four Winds Field where they scored 13 runs. Left fielder Roberto Caro had his best night since being sent to South Bend from Myrtle Beach last week. Caro finished 3-6 with 6 RBI, one run scored, and one walk. South Bend blasted two home runs into the left field bleachers in the game. Jhonny Bethencourt smacked his first home run of the season in the 6th inning. The Cubs batted around in the inning and put six runs on the board. In the 7th, Miguel Amaya hit his second homer of the season down the left field line that just stayed fair. It was 15-4 Cubs after seven innings. In the 9th, Bowling Green decided to place a position player on the mound. First baseman Devin Davis took the hill for his second pitching appearance on the season. The Cubs scored three more runs off of Davis to bring their lead to With the win, the Cubs can split the series tomorrow in the final game at 11:35 a.m. ET. After they finish in Bowling Green, the Cubs will return home for a three game set against the Great Lakes Loons. South Bend will send left hander Ricky Tyler Thomas to the mound tomorrow morning. Thomas, with an ERA at 0.60, has the lowest ERA on the pitching staff. --
