8 Hwang homers but Sacramento falls to Sounds Despite three-run blast, River Cats stumble in series finale The Sacramento River Cats (16-27) dropped the fourth and final game of their series against the Nashville Sounds (21-20) by a score of 9-3. Sacramento starter Dan Slania cruised through the first two innings, not allowing a hit while striking out two. The trouble started in the third however as Nashville rocked Slania for four runs and rolled from there. The Sounds put up five runs over the next four frames and held the Sacramento offense scoreless for the third time this series. Third baseman Jae-Gyun Hwang drove in the three River Cats runs in the ninth inning with a three-run bomb, his third of the year. He now has a team-leading 22 RBI and three games with three RBI. The River Cats will welcome the Memphis Redbirds to town and begin a four-game set starting tomorrow night. On the hill for Sacramento will be right-hander Tyler Beede (2-2, 3.30) up against Memphis' righty Mike Mayers (3-4, 5.27). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. (PT) and the game can be heard live online at rivercats.com and on the air on Money FM. 9 Binghamton Steals Game One In Richmond Ponies Rally For Three Runs In Ninth RVA - The Binghamton Rumble Ponies (23-15) scored three runs in the ninth inning to come back on Richmond (17-25) and steal the series opener 5-4 at The Diamond. Richmond led 4-0 through the first six innings until the Ponies plated two in the seventh and three more in the ninth. Richmond's Chris Shaw drilled his sixth home run of the season in the defeat. Game two of the series is on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. with a Tip of the Cap Tuesday. Binghamton used a pair of infield hits, coupled with a controversial call to load the bases and start the rally against D.J. Snelten and the Squirrels bullpen in the ninth inning. Reyes Moronta replaced Snelten with the bases loaded and relinquished a game-tying, two-run base hit to Tomas Nido. Moronta then walked the next two batters to produce the game-winning run. Squirrels lefty Andrew Suarez started the series opener for Richmond against former MLB hurler Blake Beavan. Suarez worked quickly through the lineup in the first two innings, allowing just an infield single to Tomas Nido. Suarez struck out Cody Decker to end the first inning and Kevin Kaczmarski to close out the second. Richmond forged ahead on Beavan and the Ponies with a three-run bottom of the second inning. C.J. Hinojosa grounded out toopen the inning prior to Hunter Cole, Brandon Bednar and Ali Castillo connecting in consecutive singles to load the bases. Andrew Suarez followedwith an infield single that kicked off the pitcher and rolled into shallow left field to plate the first two runs of the day. Slade Heathcott brought in the third run of the inning on a ground ball, avoiding a double play to allow Castillo to score from third. The Rumble Ponies could not take advantage of a few base runners in the third and fourth innings due to double plays. Suarez induced Luis Guillorme into an inningending double play in the third. LJ Mazzilli did the same to keep Suarez' pitch count down to 54 over the first four frames. Chris Shaw made it a 4-0 Richmond lead in thefifth inning by launching his sixth home run of the season. Shaw drilled a ball over the right center field wall for his second such home run of the homestand. Suarez continued to deal through the middle innings and retired seven consecutive batters until a two-out base hit disrupted the rhythm in the sixth. Suarez then punched out Cody Decker to end the inning and pick up his fifth strikeout in the outing.

10 The Rumble Ponies finally scuffed up Suarez in the seventh to get him to exit the contest. Kevin Taylor and LJ Mazzilli opened the inning with consecutive doubles to score Binghamton's first run of the game. Mazzilli advanced to third and scored on David Thompson's base hit. Richmond then replaced Suarez with Carlos Alvarado to finish off the inning and strand an inherited runner. Suarez lasted 6.1 innings and allowed two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out five in the nodecision. Beavan was also lifted (for a punch hitter) in the top of the seventh inning. The righty allowed four runs on eight hits in his first start with Binghamton. He walked three and struck out six in the no-decision. Alvarado took the game past the eighth inning and worked around a pair of walks to keep the 4-2 lead intact. Snelten (4-1) started the ninth and suffered his first loss of the year. The Flying Squirrels continue the homestand at The Diamond on Tuesday night with Tip of the Cap Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Sam Coonrod (1-4, 5.19) is scheduled to start the series opener against Binghamton LHP P.J. Flying Squirrels individual tickets, mini plans and group packages are on sale by contacting the Richmond box office at FUNN or online at Hitting Surge Propels Giants To Consecutive Wins San Jose earns 9-4 victory over Modesto; secures back-to-back wins for first time in May MODESTO, CA - The San Jose Giants pounded out 15 hits on Monday night in a 9-4 victory over the Modesto Nuts at John Thurman Field. The Giants built a 5-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings, absorbed back-to-back two-run frames from the Nuts and then reclaimed control of the game with a four-run top of the sixth. San Jose (18-27) earned back-toback wins for the first time since April to split the four-game home-and-home series with Modesto. Jose Vizcaino Jr. (3-for-3, 2 2B, 3 RBI) doubled twice and drove in three runs as part of a perfect night at the plate to lead the offensive attack. Ryan Howard (3-for-5, RBI), Jalen Miller (2-for-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI), Gio Brusa (2-for-5) and Jonah Arenado (2- for-4) also produced multi-hit efforts. The Giants have scored 21 runs over their last two games. Conner Menez (3-2) earned the win after tossing six innings with four runs (three earned) allowed. Menez scattered nine hits, walked two and struck out three during his start. Will LaMarche (2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) and Caleb Smith (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 SO) then combined for three scoreless innings of relief to seal the victory. San Jose never trailed in the contest on Monday. In the top of the first, three straight hits to start the game led to a run giving the Giants an early 1-0 advantage. Miller led off

11 with a double to deep left before a Howard single put runners on the corners. Bryan Reynolds then grounded a single through the hole on the right side to plate Miller with the first run of the evening. San Jose then added to their lead with another run in the second. Brusa led off with a bunt single and scored when Vizcaino Jr. blasted a two-out double into the left center field gap. A three-run top of the fourth then pushed the Giants lead to 5-0. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Arenado singled to start the rally. Matt Winn was up next and he laced a double into the right field corner to score Arenado all the way from first base for a 3-0 margin. Following a walk to Vizcaino Jr., Miller stepped to the plate and launched a double off the left field wall. The hit scored both Winn and Vizcaino Jr. to stretch the lead to 5-0. Meanwhile, Menez began his night with three scoreless innings. The left-hander needed just 32 pitches to breeze through the first three frames before running into trouble in the bottom of the fourth. The inning began with a double off the bat of Joey Curletta before a one-out RBI double from Arturo Nieto scored the first Nuts run. Then with two down, Daniel Torres singled home Nieto to bring Modesto to within 5-2. The Nuts kept the pressure on with two more runs against Menez in the bottom of the fifth. Ricky Eusebio led off with a single before Chris Mariscal drew a walk. Jordan Cowan then hit a slow roller to shortstop that Miller fielded, but threw wildly to first. Cowan was credited with a single on the play while Miller's error allowed Eusebio to score. Menez came back to retire Logan Taylor before a Curletta sacrifice fly plated Mariscal to trim the San Jose lead to 5-4. Modesto though would leave the potential tying run on base as Menez retired the next hitter, Eric Filia, on a fly out to left. The Giants then reclaimed control of the game with a four-run top of the sixth. The first four batters of the inning reached base safely for San Jose with all four scoring runs. Brusa led off with a single before Arenado and Winn were both hit by a pitch to load the bases with none out. Vizcaino Jr. then lined a double into left center to bring home Brusa and Arenado for a 7-4 lead. After Miller struck out, Howard singled sharply into left plating Winn with the third run of the inning before a Reynolds sacrifice fly scored Vizcaino Jr. for a 9-4 cushion. Menez finished his outing with a scoreless bottom of the sixth pitching around a couple of singles before the bullpen took over in the seventh. LaMarche, who was making his San Jose Giants debut, allowed a one-out single to Taylor in the bottom of the seventh, but promptly retired the next two hitters to end the inning. In the eighth, Nieto led off with a single, however three straight groundouts from the following three hitters quickly ended the inning. Smith then finished the game with a scoreless bottom of the ninth. The inning began with a walk to Mariscal, but Smith induced Cowan to ground into a double play before Taylor also grounded out to end the contest.

12 Nuts starter Pablo Lopez (2-5) suffered the loss after yielding five runs (all earned) on eight hits over the first four innings. Notes * The Giants have collected 30 hits over the last two games - both wins. * San Jose out-hit Modesto on Monday. Eight of the nine Giants starters finished with at least one hit. * Miller's two doubles increased his season total to nine - tied with Aramis Garcia for the team lead. * Vizcaino Jr. notched his first multi-hit game since April 25. * San Jose won their third straight road game. The Giants improved to on the road this season. * LaMarche was added to the San Jose roster from Extended Spring Training before the game. Monday marked his San Francisco Giants organizational debut. He signed as a free agent earlier this month. * In other roster moves on Monday, pitcher David Owen was placed on the 7-day disabled list while infielder Michael Bernal and outfielder Johneshwy Fargas were transferred to Augusta (A). On Deck The Giants continue their road trip on Tuesday evening with the opener of a three-game series against the Lancaster JetHawks. First pitch at The Hangar is scheduled for 6:35 PM. Mike Connolly (3-4, 2.97 ERA) is slated to start on the mound for San Jose while Lancaster is expected to counter with Trey Killian (5-1, 5.59 ERA).
