1 Rules and Regulations of e Buckeye Cow Dog Association, Inc. Hourglass Trial, July 30-31, The provisions of Ohio Revised Code Section (C)(2)(a)-Immunity as to equine activity risks-apply to e cow dog trial as do common-law principles of assumption of e risk, release and waiver. 2. Each participant shall be required to sign a release of liability and an acknowledgment at ey are assuming all risks of participation. 3. Plans have been made to video tape e runs. If any handler objects to being video taped, such objection mu be lodged before e trial begins. Video tapes will be used to settle any disputes and possibly for commercial purposes. 4. All participants are eligible, but not required, to join e Buckeye Cow Dog Association, Inc. (BCDA) In order to be eligible for year end high point awards however, one mu be a member before entering e class where points are awarded. Single membership is $20.00 and family membership is $35.00 per year. 5. Depending upon e number of total entries, approximately sixty (60) head of 600 wt cattle will be available for e July 2005 trial. 6. It is anticipated at 3 head of cattle will be used in each run. 7. The trial will be conducted at e Rafter L Bar indoor arena at Lavelle Farms, 3022 Fox Lake Road, New Marshfield, Ohio Horse abling and camper hook-ups are available for $10.00 per night. 8. Entries open June 15, 2005 and shall remain open until July 15, 2005 or until all classes are Page 1 of 7

2 full. The classes will be filled on a fir-come, fir-served basis. Full payment should accompany each regiration form. Regiration forms are available on or by calling John at 740\ or Scott at 740\ Day of trial or po entries will be accepted subject to availability. 9. No sheep classes will be offered for e July 2005 trial. 10. Buckeye Cow Dog Association, Inc., has resolved to affiliate e July 30-31, 2005 cow dog trial wi e United States Border Collie Handler s Association (USBCHA) and e Lone Star Cattle Dog Futurity (LSCDF) and its National Cattle Dog Association. Part of e entry fee for each class includes an affiliation fee which shall be remitted to e affiliating organizations togeer wi e applicable placement results from each class. To be eligible for points from e sanctioning associations, one mu be a member of ose associations before entering e classes at is trial. 11. LSCDF tallies earnings from e top two money paying classes in sanctioned trials. For e July 30-31, 2005 BCDA, Inc. Hourglass Trial, it is anticipated at ese classes are Open nd and Horseback. The expected payback percentages from ese classes are: 1 30%; 2 25%; rd 3 20%; 4 15%; and 5 10% of e total net money available in e particular class for payback. Payback will only apply to classes wi ten (10) or more dogs. Any applicable winnings will be mailed to handlers after e trial expenses are tabulated. Prizes and ribbons will be awarded rough fif place in e oer classes. 12. Depending on e number of entries, ere shall be two one-day trials in each division. [Each day shall be a separate trial.] 13. Depending upon e number of entries, some classes may be consolidated such at ere will be a class wiin a class. 14. There shall be a handler s meeting at 8:00 a.m. each day and immediately before e art of every oer class. 15. The rules of e class, e number of obacles, sequence of e course and time limits of each class shall be announced at e handler s meeting. Announcements at e handlers meetings control. 16. The trial shall be a point and obacle trial wi a time clock being used to terminate each run or to settle any ties. A time line location will be announced at e handler s meeting to settle any ties. 17. There shall be a point keeper\obacle judge who shall serve as Trial Director. This individual shall oversee e trial. Any decision of e Trial Director as to e number of points, time, or completion of an obacle, shall be final and each entrant mu agree to ese provisions as a condition of entry. The Trial Director may be assied by clerks of his\her choosing. 18. There shall be no judged outrun, lift, gaer, shed, drive, or pen. Time and points only. 19. It is anticipated ere will be six (6) to seven (7) obacles or tasks wor a total of 105 For each cow at successfully negotiates an obacle or task in e designated chronological order, e handler shall be awarded five (5) If e pen is e la obacle, it shall be all or none. i.e. All cattle mu be inside e pen when e time ends for any to count. Penning ends when e gate is closed. 20. GENERAL CLASS DESCRIPTIONS(UPDATED ANNOUNCEMENTS AT HANDLERS TRIAL MEETINGS SHALL CONTROL): A. Open Class-Open to any handler and\or dog. Points accumulate for BCDA, Inc. high point year end awards. 3. Results shall be transmitted to USBCHA for points and LSCDF for earnings if applicable. 4. Ribbons or awards for 1 rough 5 place. 5. Payback depending upon number of total entries. 6. Unless announced oerwise at e handler s meeting, make or break e plane of e designated obacle on e fir pass does not apply to is class. 7. At lea one cow mu successfully negotiate e designated obacle or task in chronological order however, to earn e right to continue e course and earn 8. Stock mu be put rough obacles in e proper order to accumulate B. Ranch Class-This class is designed for less-experienced dogs. It will be less difficult nd rd an e Open Class and is open to dogs at have not placed 1,2, or 3 place in any Open Cattle Class sponsored by any recognized Stock Dog Association before. 1. Entry fees are $40.00 per dog. 2. Points accumulate for BCDA, Inc. high point year end awards. 3. Ribbons or awards for 1 rough 5 place. 4. At lea one cow mu successfully negotiate e designated obacle or task in chronological order to earn e right to continue e course and earn 6. Novice Class- This is a beginners division intended to encourage anyone who has a working dog to enter and compete wi e lea difficult course and rules. It is open nd to any dog and\or handler in which neier e dog or handler has won a 1,2, or rd 3 place in any class sponsored by any recognized Stock Dog Association before. One can enter Saturday and Sunday July 30-31, 2005 regardless of placements on Saturday and ill be eligible for e novice class. 1. Entry fees are $35.00 per dog. 2. Points do not accumulate for any year end awards. 3. Ribbons or awards for 1 rough 5 place. 4. Make or break e plane of e obacle does not apply to is class. 5. Stock mu be put rough obacles in e proper order to accumulate D. Nursery Class- This class is defined by e age of e dog to be consient wi e rules and regulations of e USBCHA [Section 29 (B)]. Stock mu be put rough obacles in e proper order to accumulate E. Horseback Class- Conteants are responsible for providing eir own horse. Horses may be rented from Lynn Semingson at Smoke Rise Ranch. This class is open to any age dog wiout regard to prior experience. A lariat may be carried by e conteant but it may not come into contact wi e cattle or dog. A rider may not intentionally run into cattle wi e horse, or rike or hit e cattle while horseback. The rider mu remain mounted roughout e class. 1. Entry fees are $50.00 per dog. 2. Points accumulate for BCDA, Inc. high point year end awards. 3. Results transmitted to LSCDF for earnings awards if applicable. 4. Ribbons or awards for 1 rough 5 place. 5. Payback depending upon number of entries. 6. Make or break e plane of e obacle on e fir pass does not apply to is class. 7. At lea one cow mu successfully negotiate e designated obacle or task to earn e right to continue e course and earn 8. Stock mu be put rough obacles in e proper order to accumulate 21. A handler on foot may carry a ock cane, sorting ick, or aff, but it may not come into contact wi a dog or ock which can result in disqualification. No whips may be used, cracked or carried during a run. No electrical devices of any kind may be used on a dog or ock during any run. 22. No weighted collars, special training collars, dummy collars or electronic collars of any kind may be worn by a dog in e trial. 23. The class descriptions, course obacles and e rules lied are general guidelines governing each of e respective classes. The right is reserved to modify or amplify e rules prior to e trial. All changes or amendments shall be announced at e handler s meeting for each class. Announcements made at e handlers meetings control. 24. In e Open Class, in order to simulate actual ranch or farm working conditions, at lea one Page 4 of 7

5 of e cattle mu pass rough certain designated obacles in e announced chronological order to secure As an example, an obacle cannot be completely skipped to move down e course in an attempt to secure more points on more favorable obacles. If only part of e herd [example: 2 out of 3 head of cattle] has cleared an obacle at e end of e timed run, points are awarded for e number of cattle at cleared e particular obacle when e time ends. Penning points are based on an all of none basis, however. As an example, if only two head are penned when time ends, ere are no points awarded for e two head. Penning is completed when e gate is closed. Any announcements at e handler s meeting shall supercede ese rules and definitions. 25. In e Ranch Class, at lea one animal mu pass rough an obacle in e announced chronological sequential order in order to secure points and earn e right to proceed to e next obacle. Make e obacle on e fir pass or break e plane does not apply to is class. One head mu pass completely rough e obacle from e proper direction however, to earn e right to continue to e next obacles. As an example, an obacle cannot be completely skipped to move down e course in an attempt to secure more points on more favorable obacles. Points will be awarded for each cow at successfully passes completely rough e obacle, except for e pen. All or none mu be penned when e time ends to receive points for penning. Penning is completed when e gate is closed. Any announcements at e handler s meeting shall supercede ese rules and definitions. 26. In order to simulate e duties of a working ockman a horseback, ere shall be a Horseback Class wi each participant supplying his\her own horse. Any handler whose horse is deemed out of control by e trial director shall be disqualified. Horseback handlers may carry a lariat but it should not come into contact wi e cattle. No whips may be used, cracked or carried in e rider s hand horseback during a run. There shall be a Nursery Class at e July 30-31, 2005 hourglass trial, which is open to any dog born on or after January 1, In e event of a dispute as to any dog s age, regiration papers mu be presented to prove e dog s date of bir. For unregiered dogs, a declaration or affidavit from e owner atteing to e age shall be sufficient. If an insufficient number of nursery dogs enter to create a separate class, ere shall be a nursery class, wiin one of e oer classes, consient wi e cattle dog rules of e U.S.B.C.H.A. Page 5 of 7

If e Nursery Class is run as a class wiin a class, e rules for e class where e nursery dogs are entered shall govern e nursery entrants as well. 28. There shall be a Novice Class. This is a beginner s class to encourage anyone wi a ock nd rd dog to come and compete. Handlers may not have won a 1, 2 or 3, at any ock trial before e weekend of e trial. Saturday s entrants, regardless of placement, may also enter Sunday. Break e plane on e fir pass does not apply to is class. Points shall be awarded based upon e number of cows at successfully negotiate each obacle in e announced chronological order except for e pen. All or none mu be penned when e time ends to receive points for penning. Penning is completed when e gate is closed. Any announcements at e handler s meeting shall supercede ese rules and definitions. 29. Time limits and e number, order and type of obacles shall be announced before each class by e Trial Director at e respective handler s meeting(s). 30. In certain classes, ere may be an obacle such as a handler s po in which all ree head of ock mu pass around or rough for e handler to earn e right to continue to earn points roughout e remainder of e course. Such obacles will be discussed at e handlers meeting(s). 31. The order of runs in each class shall be drawn at random. They will be announced and poed before each class. Po entries and subitutions may be accepted depending upon number of total entries and added into e run order where appropriate in e discretion of e Trial Director. 32. The particular cattle to be used in each run shall be selected by e Stock Director and all decisions of e Stock Director as to which cattle are used in any given run or class shall be final. 33. For handlers wi multiple entries in one class, if sufficient oer entries permit, ere shall be a different run before a handler runs his\her next dog. 34. Pay back to class winners in certain classes, shall be determined by e total number of entries, trial expenses and any added money received. 35. DISQUALIFICATIONS- A dog shall be disqualified if any cattle jump a fence during a run. Hitting, riking or poking ock wi a cane or ick may also result in disqualification, if in e opinion of e Trial Director e handler made an overt movement wi e ick or cane for e purpose of causing ock to move in a desired direction or manner. Disqualification results in loss of points for e class. Page 6 of 7

7 36. EARLY TERMINATIONS- A handler may terminate a run early by notifying e time keeper and Trial Director and retain any points earned up to termination. 37. The Trial Director in his\her discretion, may also terminate any run early if a dog is overly abusive to any cattle, or if any horse or dog is deemed out of control. The Trial Director in his\her discretion may order a re-run, adju points, or make any oer decision necessary if outside interference unfairly interferes wi any particular run. 38. The number of tasks and obacles, type, orientation, and difficulty of each course may be adjued after Saturday s trial for Sunday. 39. Smile and keep it fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Page 7 of 7
