2 Aufgabe 1:. Leseverstehen - Multiple Choice A short story: Jared Thomas, Westies vs Bungala 1981 Jack always woke early on the day that he played footy. He was especially anxious when his team played Bungala because their oval wasn't a part of the town that he lived in, but a part of the Aboriginal mission. Bungala was also the team and home of a few mates he affectionately called cuz. Jack and his under-ten team mates would always arrive on time at the mission in their parents' flash cars. When the little white boys jumped out of the cars, they huddled together and laughed at what they could see around them. Jack and his dad, William, stayed clear of the young giggling pack. Jack felt embarrassed to arrive at his friends' place in a car, he thought his friends would see his not walking there as a sign of weakness. And Jack didn't understand why his team mates were laughing because he thought Bungala, being right out in the bush, was a fantastic and adventurous place, which showed how tough the Bungala people are. He also knew that a part of him belonged there. The boys from Westies laughed with fog bellowing out of their mouths, as their opposition woke one by one beneath small gum trees with their camp dogs. The Bungala boys wore no shoes or socks, just shorts and shirts, as they made their way across the oval, ( ) they always started short of a team until other team mates woke. As the Westy boys could make two teams the coach of Westies gave Bungala some of his lanky limbed or slower players. William cringed when realising Bungala were short of a team as he knew that Jack would volunteer to play for them immediately. As Jack changed out of the guernsey that his father was so proud to see him wear, William would wait for Jack's team mates to tease him. William remembered being Jack's age, a little 'half-caste' Aboriginal boy, living amongst the sandhills, on the outskirts of the mission. Sandhill Savage they called him ( ) As soon as Jack started kicking the football around with the Bungala boys the Westy men started ridiculing him and his father. Two men shouted spontaneously, 'Like father like son.' Another said, 'Once a Sandhill Savage always a fucking savage.' ( ) Westies had placed two goals on the board within the first five minutes of play. Bungala played hard, attacking the ball with speed and desperation. Despite the Bungala boys' zest, the Westy boys kicking ability gave them an advantage. ( )Westies dominated until Ringo and Archie made their way onto the field. They were two of Jack's good friends. Both the Bungala and Westy team players were always mystified by Archie and Ringo's football ability. This day was no exception. Jack became inspired, so much so that he decided he had no need for football boots. 'If Ringo and Archie could play so deadly without them, why can't I?' he thought. He ran to the boundary and chucked one boot at a time back at his father. The Westy men laughed hysterically at Jack's act and William felt embarrassed like he had never been before in his life. 'Jack, what in the hell do you think you're doing? Get here immediately boy,' growled William. 'But Dad,' whined Jack, ' Archie and Ringo ain't got 'em, and look there, they playin real deadly unna?' 'Don 't you ever answer back to me boy, ' and with this threat he picked Jack swiftly off the ground by his wrist. Jack broke his father's hold and stepped away from him clenching every muscle in his body to hold back the pain. And then it gushed from his mouth: 'My name's Jack and not Jacky Jacky's son! Now hold on to my boogadis 'cause I'm goin' to play me some football.' E1-(I)-RGy Seite 2 von 5
3 Jack spoke involuntarily, but so assertively that Jack's dad was stunned to laughter. Jack was not only surprised at what had just slipped through his lips but surprised at his father's response. When William laughed, Jack took his wet, muddy socks off, and placed them in his father's open hands with caution. 'Well, go on, go chase a kick then,' said William, and Jack sped back onto the oval. The game ended with Westies winning as they always did. But this time Bungala had got within five goals of Westies, which was something they had never done before. The boys from the teams shook each other's hands as they made their way back to the boundary of the oval. (752 words) from: Kerry Davies (Ed.)1998. Across Country. Stories From Aboriginal Australia.
