11 Appendix B Uniform Chaperone Rules/Duties Revised and effective November 10, 2009 This page is intended for the use of the team Chaperone. It should not be sent in with team competition entry. Definition of Chaperone: For the purpose of all USPC Competitions each team, or in situations that an individual should be entered, there will be a designated Official Team Chaperone. In the situation of scramble teams the Official Team Chaperone(s) will be appointed by the Rally Officials and will be so noted in the Rally program as such. The role of this person is to give the Rally Organizers a responsible adult to contact for any needs and to give the team members a contact to assist them as may be indicated and allowed. Hours for tour of duty are.. The Official Team Chaperone is responsible for team members during the hours of competition and on competition grounds only (from arrival on grounds until departing rally ground at beginning and end of each day of competition). Transportation, driving and lodging Decisions to allow a Competitor to drive or not, who they can or cannot ride with, who they can or cannot have in a vehicle that they are driving, where they stay at night and with whom they stay, and who is to be responsible for a Competitor are all decisions that must be made by the parent/legal guardian if a minor. These decisions are not a decision of the USPC, any Region, Club or Rally Organizer. Specific arrangements must be made by and between the parent/legal guardian and the adult assuming any of these responsibilities in the absence of the parent/guardian. Helping your team to succeed: Initiate contact with all team members prior to leaving for the competition. In cases of Scramble Team members, request contact information from the Rally Secretary. Share this information with team Captain and/or Stable Manager (SM). Encourage the team to have meetings prior to leaving for Rally. Be sure all members of a Scramble Team are included in the decision making process, either by or phone contact, if a distance away. Discuss team equipment, review all rules that apply and any decisions regarding snacks, drinks, plans for meals, etc. Determine how the team members plan to provide snacks and drinks (i.e., each team member contribute a sum of money to a pot or each member is assigned specific items to bring.) If each is contributing money, it must be collected before the Rally. Be sure you know who is bringing cooler(s), so you can avoid the quick trip to the local store. Plan arrival time at the competition site and any details such as arrangements for ordering bedding, if needed, and who is assigned to do this (again collect money in advance if needed). On the first day of the Rally, gather the team together before they separate for the night and make plans for the next day. Include a review of their competition schedule and how they can best work together to help each other prepare for Turnout Inspections. Determine a regular meeting place and plan to have a scheduled discussion session at the end of each day of competition. Take this opportunity to offer words of praise, acknowledge their accomplishments and encourage the sense of teamwork and team building. Guide the team towards constructive criticism and steer them away from finger pointing. Have the team make plans for the next day concerning time they will arrive on the competition grounds, who will feed horses the next morning, who will re-supply the tack room cooler with ice, drinks and snacks (get requests for drinks/snacks) and make the plans for lunch. Be sure any plans for cooler and/or lunch delivery follow any requirements as stated in the Competition Entry Packet (Neutral Zone) and they understand the plan. Have the team leave with a plan for the next day in place before they go off for an evening of relaxation.

18 TETRATHLON NEWSLETTER 2013 The year 2013 brings in several important changes in the world of Tetrathlon in Pony Club. During 2012, there were several major events worthy of highlighting, which include a Pony Club Tetrathlete competing in London in the 2012 Olympics and a new 2013 Rulebook, which is now available and should be used for all 2013 Tetrathlon Rallies. Please make sure that you are using the most current version of the rulebook. For 2013, we have several important changes already in the works, including competition in a new Horsemasters Division at Championships, which we would strongly encourage be offered at all Regional Rallies as well. Also this year at Championships, we will introduce our first Tetrathlon Team Award, The George Helwig Team Award. Finally, plans are in the works for the 2014 Tetrathlon International Exchange to be held in Australia. SUZANNE STETTINIUS COMPETES IN MODERN PENTATHLON IN 2012 LONDON OLYMPICS This past summer, Pony Club Tetrathlete Suzanne Stettinius competed at the 2012 Olympics in Modern Pentathlon. Pony Club was well represented at the 2012 Olympics with long time Pony Club judge, coach, course designer, and lecturer, Richard Lamb serving as Riding Coach for the US Pentathlon team. The riding, running and shooting events were held in Greenwich Park, London's oldest royal park, dating back to 1433 and offering sweeping views of St. Paul's Cathedral and the newer Canary Wharf financial district. The fences on the riding course were decorated with references to British icons, from Stonehenge to Abbey Road. At this year s annual meeting, Suzanne gave a wonderful presentation of her rise through Pony Club in Tetrathlon and her international travels while competing in Modern Pentathlon. She ended the presentation allowing Pony Club Members to try their hand at shooting the electronic target and pistol used at International Pentathlon competitions. NEW 2013 RULEBOOK IS NOW AVAILABLE Our new Pony Club Tetrathlon 2013 Rulebook is in effect. It is available at the Pony Club Bookstore or on line, at This rulebook should be followed at all 2013 Tetrathlon Rallies and will be in effect at Championships this summer. NEW HORSEMASTERS DIVISION At the recent annual meeting in Denver, the new Horsemasters Division for all Pony Club Tetrathlon Competitions was adopted. This division will allow all Pony Club Horsemasters to compete at different skill levels all on the same playing field. Basically, the Horsemaster s Division will be run as follows: As with our other divisions, the Horsemasters Division would be divided into Male and Female. It would be open to anyone in the Pony Club Horsemaster s program. Qualifying for Championships would be at the recommendation of the RS or similar to qualifying for the existing 4 divisions whereby participants would have to score 2200 points or higher at a qualifying Regional Rally offering the Horsemaster s Division. The Horsemaster s Division would offer a range of competition levels, so that people of all abilities could participate in this one Division. Competition levels are as follows: RIDING Base Height of 3-7 (same as our Senior Division) Can ride at 3-3 height with 50 point overall penalty Can ride at 2-9 height with 150 point penalty Can ride at 2-6 height with 225 point penalty SWIMMING Base distance 200 yards or meters Can swim 100 yards or meters with 150 point penalty RUNNING Base distance 3K Can run 2K with 75 point penalty Can run 1K with 150 point penalty SHOOTING Shoot one handed following same rules as Seniors HORSE MANAGEMENT Competitors will be judged at the C-1 levels The Horsemasters division will be offered at both East and Midwest Championships in 2013, and we encourage all Regions to begin offering this division as soon as possible. An amendment to the new Rulebook will be issued shortly outlining competition in this division in detail. GEORGE HELWIG TEAM CHAMPION TETRATHLON AWARD Also at this year s annual meeting, the George Helwig Team Award was approved. This award will be given to the highest scoring Tetrathlon team at all USPC Championships beginning in 2013 and will be scored as follows: The three highest individual scores, regardless of Divisions, for each phase would be taken for each team and added together. Teams consisting of four members would be allowed to drop the lowest score for each phase. These scores would then be totaled. Negative Horse Management Scores for each team would also be calculated using the Tetrathlon Rulebook for the scoring of Horse Management as well as the Horse Management Rulebook with respect to Ghost Scores for short (or 3 men) teams. These negative points would them be totaled and included in the final team total amounts. The highest overall scoring team will then be given the award. INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE SCHEDULED FOR AUSTRALIA IN 2014 Western Australia is scheduled to host the 2014 Tetrathlon International Exchange. The exact dates have not been confirmed but the competition will occur sometime in July, 2014 during their school semester 2 week break (Remember July is the middle of winter in Australia, and students are in school). The Tetrathlon Committee is going to make every effort to identify the 2014 Team earlier than has been done in the past, to allow team members more time to fundraise for this trip of a lifetime. Tetrathlon Committee member Rob Bowersox is now serving on the Pony Club International Exchange Committee which is exploring new methods for fund raising for all Pony Club International Exchanges KEY SCHEDULING DATES FOR 2013 CHAMPIONSHIPS EAST July 24 July 28 Novice, Intermediate, Junior, Senior, and Horsemaster Divisions will be offered at the United States Pony Club Championships East in Competition will be held Thursday July 25 Saturday July 27 at the Virginia Horse Park in Lexington, Virginia.
