Sport A diligent dressage rider She is one of the most successful German female dressage riders and is known for her sensitive way of riding. Her name is Dorothee Schneider. The renowned trainer has six Hanoverians in training at her facility in Framersheim in South Germany. She is a member of the A-cadre with her mount Showtime. They aspire to obtain a ticket to the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. By Malte Kanz Dorothee Schneider supports the principles of classical dressage, sensitive riding and conserving training. And that is not all; these are the keys to her success. The 47-year old is one of Germany s most successful dressage trainers and entered the German A-cadre with her Hanoverian Showtime (breeder: Heinrich Wecke, Stadthagen). She is a member of the selective circle of riders, which compete for a spot on Germany s dressage equipe for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Showtime already proved in an impressive fashion that he is the right horse for the task. His victories in the Grand Prix and the Special in Munich and in Fritzens-Schindhof last year, his impressive performances in Stuttgart and his potential to still improve, which he showed so convincingly in Dortmund, make him a legitimate hopeful for Rio. A storybook career Showtime impressed numerous times with consistent performances during his still young career. This son of Sandro Hit/Rotspon represented Germany at the World Championships for young dressage horses in 2011 finishing sixth. On the national level, the 2006-born gelding successfully placed in the finals at the Bundeschampionate as a five- and as a six-year old. In 2013, he successfully broke into the S-level classes and qualified for the final of the Nürnberger Burgpokal (Castle Cup). He won the qualifying class and finished the final in fifth place. He started the year 2015 with brilliant performances. The transition from participating in rising Grand Prix-classes to competing at the international level went smoothly and was rewarded with numerous victories. The victory in the Grand Prix Special during the Munich Indoors was a very special highlight. Showtime won with more than 80 percent. It is looking good for Showtime. Dorothee Schneider might obtain a second opportunity at breathing Olympic air! She knows Showtime inside and out! Dorothee Schneider has him in training, since he is three years old. His training takes place in Framersheim at the farm called St. Stephan, where he is lovingly called Showi. I describe his disposition as healthily shy. He has unlimited potential and does everything and anything for his rider. He is motivated, wants to make no mistakes and learns quickly. I have high hopes for him, Dorothee Schneider raves. He brings honour to his name, she adds with a smile, He is a shy show-maker, who shines with his accomplishments and turns every ride into an impressive performance! The Olympic venue is not foreign to Dorothee Schneider. Four years ago, her childhood dream became reality, when she was a member of Germany s equipe at the World s most important sport s event. She traveled to the Themse with Diva Royal by Don Frederico/Warkant. The story of the expressive black-brown began in Verden. Diva Royal (breeder: Heinz Braul, Lehrte; exhibitor: Siegfried Beinroth, Braunschweig) sold on Verden s elite auction in 2006 to Hans-Peter Fricke, Heeslingen. Trainer Tom Berg introduced her to international competitions and trained her up to the S-level. In 2009, Family Roth bought the mare and placed her in training with Dorothee Schneider in Framersheim. Everything went pretty quickly from then on. It started with a fourth and a fifth place at the German Championships in Balve. Then the pair danced into the hearts of the judges and spectators in Aachen. Former national trainer Holger Schmezer noticed the pair and the dressage committee did not hesitate to nominate the pair for London. When Dorothee Schneider talks about Diva Royal and London, she appears touched. Goose bumps and tear-filled eyes make you think that London was an emotional highlight in her career. Diva Royal had no weaknesses. She earned Dorothee Schneider on the course of success with her just ten-year old Hanoverian Showtime. Photo: Lafrentz The Hanoverian

Sport Dorothee Schneider won team silver in London with the former auction horse Diva Royal. Photo: Lafrentz Always with light contact: Dorothee Schneider already qualified ten horses for the final of the Nürnberber Burgpokal. She won aboard Santiago in Photo: Lafrentz her scores with her unwavering rhythm, the security in her movements and her consistent positive attitude. She radiated this enormous security and sovereignty in the dressage ring. The entire package was right! It was so much fun to present her, the rider shares. The pair performed beyond anything that they had done before and were rewarded with the team silver medal. They finished the individual competition in seventh position. The joy about the enormous success was slightly overshadowed. Dorothee entered into the competition knowing that the beautiful black mare was going back to her owner Stella Charlott Roth after the Olympic Games. That was the agreement. Dorothee continued to be the trainer for her student Stella and enjoyed the pair s successes like the victory of the Piaff-Promotion Prize and the bestowal of the Otto-Loerke-Prize for being the best rising Grand Prix-horse. Today, the exceptional performance mare is the proud dam of a filly. Without big fuss Dorothee Schneider is a dressage rider, who is in the public eye. Dorothee Schneider is a trainer, who does not seek public recognition. This becomes very clear in our conversation. She appears reserved, yet very friendly, approachable and interested. Without big fuzz or glitter! Even though she can be very proud of all her successes! Not only is her show record filled to the rim, her vita is also very impressive. She manages the breeding farm St. Stephan in Framersheim. In addition, she took on the training of the horses on the farm Peterhof in Perl-Borg. With a master in horse management for riding, breeding and raising of horses, she has become one of the most renowned trainers. The daughter of the well-known breeder of Trakehner horses, stallion manager and Grand Prix-judge Hans-Eberhard Schneider and his wife Susanne trained numerous horses to the top. Even though the Olympic Games in London were a milestone in the career of Dorothee Schneider, they were not her leap from young horse-classes into the limelight. She is known to create champions because of her continued participation in national championships and her nominations for World Championships of young dressage horses. Her championship victory in Warendorf 2003 remains unforgettable, when she rode Dynamico by Don Primero/Weltmeyer (breeder: Katja Braeuer, Lorsch). She also revived all talents in auction horse Horatio by Hochadel/Matcho AA (breeder: Susanne Buroch, Holste) and successfully presented him in Warendorf and in Verden at the World Championships for young dressage horses. At the same time, Dorothee Schneider is just as successful at the Grand Prix-level. She has a very special relationship with her successful competitor Van Deyk, which is now 32 years old: Her father bred this son of Patricius xx/ibikus. She obtained more than 60 victories and placements in Grand Prix aboard this approved premium sire. These successes in all areas do not come from nowhere! She learned how to ride from her dad Hans-Eberhard Schneider, a successful trainer. Dorothee Schneider was already ambitious as a young girl and wooed her dad for every riding lesson. It paid off. He instilled the fundamental knowledge about riding in her. It is this knowledge, which determines the training on the breeding farm St. Stephan: a systematic, age-friendly training program in accordance with the classical scale of training. Rhythm relaxedness contact impulsion straightness collection are fundamental elements of the daily training with the horses. There is not just one way. Every horse is individually trained and brought along. Gymnastics to develop strength and muscles apply to all though. They are an unconditional requirement when riding horses, the trainer shares. She sits on her first horse at seven o clock in the morning. The emphasis of her training philosophy is building on and expanding naturally given talents. It is very important to ride with utmost care, she adds. Dorothee seeks advice from her trainers Monica Theodorescu, Hans Riegler and Jonny Hilberath, with whom she trains often. All horses are taken out of the stall twice a day. They are ridden and afterwards they are allowed to roll, play and relax on a paddock, Dorothee Schneider says. This is so important for the psyche of the horses. It helps them to be more 4 The Hanoverian

Sport relaxed and even-tempered. It is important for competitions, so that we can grow together as partners in the dressage ring. Then competitions become enjoyable for the horses, she emphasizes. Dorothee Schneider has another Hanoverian in her barn since a short time. He came from Verden s auction program. It is eight-year old Faustus by Falsterbo/Forrest xx (breeder: Heino Bruns, Gödenstorf). Family Linden from Pulheim discovered him on the summer auction in 2013 and trained him up to the S-level. Recently Dorothee Schneider took over the training of Faustus, who already has placements at Prix St. Georges, with the goal to compete him at Grand Prix. Faustus is the stable mate of additional auction horses from Verden. There is Santiago, the reigning winner of the Burgpokal (Castle Cup) 2015! Santiago is a very special horse, Dorothee Schneider starts raving. It was her very first victory of these high-carat competition series. I saw him for the first time in Dresden and he immediately impressed me. His former rider Christian Flamm trained him beautifully. I was able to seamlessly continue working on the horse s balance, his throughness and increase his strength, she adds. Santiago proved in Frankfurt that he is a horse with a great future. The Louisdor-Prize is the next goal for Santiago by Stedinger/Dacaprio (breeder: Klaus-Hermann Ehlen, Bremervörde). His owner Alexander Stolzke is very proud of how quickly Dorothee Schneider and Santiago found to each other. Because of this wonderful development, he also sent his horse Leopold SF by Locksley II/Wolkenstein II (breeder: Klaus Kamps, Cuxhaven) to Framersheim for training. Leopold SF just as Santiago found his owner through Verden s auction program. The fifth Hanoverian at the stable of Family Schneider already decorated the auction catalog of the 132 nd elite auction in October of 2015, which explains the origin of this Hanoverian: foalshof s Rock n Rose also descends from the family of these former auction horses. The 2004-born mare by Rubin-Royal/Feiner Stern (breeder: Heinrich Lahmeyer, Bassum) is in training with Dorothee Schneider since two years. This pair started the show season with successes at the Grand Prix. Even though Derano by De Niro/Warkant (breeder: Rudolf Quast, Jork) does not live at the breeding farm St. Stephan, he still is in training with Dorothee Schneider on the Peterhof in Perl-Borg. The chestnut gelding is well known because of his second placement in the final of the Nuernberg Burgpokal (Castle Cup) in The following year, he proved his talent for international competition at Prix St. Georges in Aachen. His stable mate is Sezuan, the dual world champion of young dressage horses. Dorothee Schneider would not be Dorothee Schneider, if she were not able to manage all of these responsibilities beautifully. It is all a question of good organization and a good team, she reveals. It is, however, more than just an organizational skill. Dorothee Schneider clearly is incredibly organized and none of the horses ever get the short end of the stick! She focuses on the most important, always has her eyes on her horses and satisfies the needs of each individual. This cannot possibly be the sole key to her success though. Her training methods are impeccable, which we were able to witness at the World Championships for young dressage horses. She succeeded in riding the impressive five-year old stallion Sezuan to victory and, one year later, the pair won the World Championship-title in the division for six-year olds. I have the best memories of the event site Verden. I love to reminisce about it, she responds to the question about her connection to the equestrian town Verden. Goal: Olympic Games Her life dream is the participation in Rio de Janeiro. Dorothee Schneider is well prepared and now she must prove herself at the qualifying shows. Showtime is a horse, with which she is able to stand her ground against the best. The pair proved themselves with the victory in the Grand Prix at the Munich Indoors, where they received more than 80 percent. At the Pferd International in Munich- Riem, the pair won the freestyle with 84,3 percent. These are the best prerequisites for the next qualifying shows in Balve and Aachen. Breaking the 80 percent-mark several times! A victory with Showtime at the Munich Indoors followed by another victory in Munich-Riem: 84,3 percent in the Grand Prix-freestyle. 6 Sport A wonderful Derby-victory Wonder and Borja Carrascosa Martinez from Spain won gold at the German Dressage Derby in Hamburg in May. Happiness was the best horse, which Michelle Hagmann from Sweden had brought into the final. By Britta Züngel Wonder and Borja Carrascosa Martinez had their debut in Redefin, before they won the German Dressage Derby in Hamburg. Photo: Lafrentz Six weeks ago, Borja Carrascosa Martinez was an ambitious dressage rider and trainer, who had a great dream. Today he is the Derby-winner on the way to Rio de Janeiro. The partner of the 34-year old Spaniard is Wonder by Waterford/Regazzoni (breeder: Cord and Elke Haase, Wachendorf). Internationally renowned horse-rider combinations participated in the exciting final with horse exchange in Hamburg. Michelle Hagman finished second on Happiness by Hochadel/Walt Disney (breeder: Heike Oetjen, Rockstedt). The elevenyear old chestnut mare also gave the other finalists good rides obtaining results of more than 73 percent each time. She was recognized as the best horse of the Derby. Nathalie Sayn-Wittgenstein finished in third position on her Danish mare Fabienne. I still cannot believe it, Borja Carrascosa Martinez shares happily after his victory. Borja Carrascosa Martinez was a member of the Kasselmann team for almost four years, before he left Hagen in 2015 to start his own horse business with his life-partner Alexander Brenninkmejer on the breeding farm Auric in Krefeld. He had been mostly successful with young horses during his early days in Germany. He was a member of the Spanish equipewith Hickstead by Hudson/Walt Disney at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy. It was not easy for me to leave Spain, Borja Carrascosa Martinez shared in an interview a while back. I came to Germany to build a new life and follow my dream. I am super happy! It had not been two months that Wonder was in the barn of Borja Carrascova Martinez. Hamburg was the second joint horse show. The pair celebrated its first success at the end of April, when they won the Grand Prix and finished the Special in second position in Redefin. I was super happy with such a great outcome on our first joint show, the Spaniard, who trains with Jean Bemelmans, shared. He praised his mare, She very obviously is a superb horse. Her freshness and performance willingness are impressive! The committee, which is in charge of selecting horses and riders for the Olympic Games, noticed these top results and shortlisted the pair. The pair obtained a score of 70,94 percent at the victory in Klein-Flottbek and 73,059 percent in the Special. The Olympic standard is set at 64 percent, which a competitor has to obtain on two international shows. The pair had fulfilled half, of what is required. Hopes for a spot on the team and still a final with horse exchange? I ride Wonder since just six weeks; we are still in the phase of getting to know each other, the Spaniard says born Wonder is not a total novice! The liver chestnut was awarded the state s premium aspirant-status in Bruchhausen-Vilsen and completed the mare performance test in Hoya the same year receiving top scores for her basic gaits, rideability and free-jumping. Her breeder Elke Haase presented her in dressage horse-classes, before she was sold to Spain. She came to the barn of Olympic rider Jordi Domingo Coll, who trained her to the Grand Prix-level. Last year, the pair came to Hagen to compete in the Nations Cup. They also participated in the international dressage and jumper show in Verden. Now Wonder and Borja Carrascosa Martinaz are on their way to Rio. The Spanish Championships are the next stop. 6 The Hanoverian

Sport Copperfield leads the Riders Tour Copperfield and Philip Rüping lead the ratings of the Riders Tour with second placements in the Grand Prix of Hagen and Münster. Damsey FRH and Helen Langehanenberg celebrated an impressive international debut in Mannheim in May. By Britta Züngel Philip Rüping was close to celebrating his first very important international success in Wiesbaden. He and his mount Copperfield by Contendro/Drosselklang II (breeder: Gaby Huntemann, Wagenfeld) finished the jump-off of the Grand Prix as the first competitors in a very fast time, which only the third to last competitor, Patrick Stühlmeyer, was able to beat. It would have been the second Grand Prix-victory for the 32-year old jumper rider from the barn of Schockemöhle. It was such a pity, Philip Rüping says only somewhat disappointed. Copperfield obtained a few very good results during the past weeks, with which I am very happy. The bay is a very intelligent horse with a superb attitude. He is complete. He has everything that a good jumper requires. Christian Temme taught Copperfiled the basics. The pair already celebrated top placements up to the S-level. Christian trained Copperfield very well. He laid the foundation for the success, Philip Rüping raves. The rider from Holstein rides the ten-year old since the summer of In August, the pair obtained its first S-level victory at the International Dressage and Jumping Festival in Verden. The German Championships in Balve are the next stop. The Riders Tour will continue in Münster in three months. Copperfield does better, when he keeps going on a schedule, his rider says. With the lead in the Riders Tour, his outlook for the future is optimistic, My boss Paul Schockemöhle greatly enjoys that one of his horses is doing well on the Riders Tour! Copperfield s breeder Friedrich-Wilhelm Huntemann and Julia Lange introduced him to jumping courses. The gelding is one of nine Copperfield and Philip Rüping. 18 Breeder s portrait Heart beats for Hannover He was born in Hannover and his heart beats for Hanoverian horses: Jürgen Matthies from Marklohe is not only successful with his driving horses holding two World Championship-titles, but he also breeds his driving horses. By Britta Züngel St.Pr.A. Donna Felina placed very well at the Herwart v.d. Decken- Show and finished the Bundeschampionate for driving horses in second place one year later. Photo: Ernst Jürgen Matthies is convinced, There is no difference between horses, which are used for riding and horses, which are used for driving. Both need a good foundation, powerful hind quarters, three good basic gaits, and they have to be sensible! These words come from somebody, who should know: Jürgen Matthies became Team World Champion of two-in-hand in 1987 and in Meanwhile, the breeding program has become the main focal point. He now puts horses in front of classical carriages. He is a Hanoverian through and through: He was born in Hannover in His grandparents had a business, in which they used horses and wagons for transportation. So Jürgen Matthies grew up with horses; they were part of his everyday life. When my dad took over the business, he immediately did away with all the horses. He promised me that he would buy a carriage in Bremen, Jürgen Matthies remembers. They drove to Bremen together, but instead of a carriage, they returned with a Borgward car. I was terribly disappointed! he says with a smile and remembers, My grandfather took me to Celle every year to see the stallion parade. My father tried everything to get me away from the horses, I even had to get a boating license. His brother took over the business, and Jürgen Matthies learned to become an optician and a hearing aid-specialist. An uncle offered him to take over his business in Nienburg at the end of the sixties. I always wanted to run my own business, Jürgen Matthies says, I love being an optician! By now, he has four additional branches. His wife Bärbel supports him in the management of the business. Jürgen Matthies has become the president of the association for opticians in Lower Saxony and Bremen. He also actively engages in the affairs of the national association for hearing aidspecialists as vice-president. As expected, horses decorate his business name and the Blue Horse is standing in front of the business in Nienburg. It has long become a landmark. When my children Christina and Jan-Hinnerk were born in 1981 and 1982, I started driving horse, Jürgen Matthies shares. He had successfully competed in dressage and eventing until then. At about the same time, the first broodmare moved into the barn in Marklohe, a small, neat farm with buildings made of post and beam construction from The farm also consisted of eleven box stalls, one large run-in stall, paddocks near the house and the marsh and a driving area near by. Horses fascinate me; I always wanted to breed born Dorothee by Diplomat/Woehler was the first broodmare. Her descendants are still in the barn today. I was looking for a proper broodmare and got a very colorful chestnut mare with a strong disposition, Jürgen Matthies remembers. A driving clinic in Nienburg was sufficient to arouse passion in Jürgen Matthies. The passion met up with a considerable amount of talent and determination. In 1987, he won the gold medal with the German team at the World Championships in Riesenbeck. His team consisted of Sir Willibald by Wittelsbach/Ceylon (breeder: Carl-Erich Köster, Suestedt) and the homebred mare Adriane by Aderlass, a daughter of the foundation dam Dorothee. It was a dream to be able to participate in the driving championships with a homebred team of horses, Jürgen Matthies remembers. He repeated this suc- 18 The Hanoverian

Breeder s portrait cess ten years later, when he became Team World Champion for the second time and also won individual bronze. This time, he drove a pair that he had taken over for only one season from Dieter Wulf. It consisted of the Hessian gelding Conversano by Calderon/Fidux, a Trakehner, and a Holstein horse. In 1991, he took Adriane s full-sister Adeline to the World Championships in Zwettl/Austria and placed ninth in the individual competition. Dorothee delivered a total of six foals by Aderlass. It comes to no surprise that an oil painting of Celle s state stud sire decorates a wall in the living room of Family Matthies. Adeline s daughter Windsorlady is the only performance mare driving, which is registered with the Hannoveraner Verband. She has a foal by foot from Fürsten-Look. She was named Windsorlady, because she was born, while I was competing at a driving competition in Windsor, Jürgen Matthies shares. She brought me luck, because I won the obstacle competition. Windsorlady also proved herself as a broodmare. Her first foal by Lauries Crusador xx, St.Pr.St. Lauriella, participated in the Herwart v.d. Decken-Show in Now the bay needs to first prove herself in competition. She is my first homebred state s premium mare, Jürgen Matthies says proudly. She was the bomb Jürgen Matthies bought Gesira by Gropius/Absatz (breeder: Gerold Sauk, Stötze) as a driving horse on the elite auction in October Four years later, he became German Vice Champion with the bay in Viernheim. She was the bomb, the owner raves still today. After her career as a sport horse, she delivered three fillies. The first foal of her granddaughter Florina by Fabriano/Regazzoni was born in February. It is a colt by Dancing World. Jürgen Matthies has a very close connection to his third dam line. He took over St.Pr.A. Donna Felina by Don Frederico/White Star from her breeder Wolfgang Lohmann. Once retired, the former member of the Bundestag (House of Representatives), Wolfgang Lohmann, started a breeding program with two mares from Brandenburg, which had jumper pedigrees. I convinced him to breed Hanoverians, Jürgen Matthies says with a smirk. He also convinced him about Hannover s dressage genes. That is, why St.Pr.A. Donna Felina by Don Frederico/White Star came to be and, later on, found her way to Marklohe. She not only left the Herwart v.d. Decken-Show as a highly decorated mare, she also was celebrated as the Vice National Championess of German driving horses in She did not conceive, so I sent her to Kalko Maekelburg for training, Jürgen Matthies shares while winking. He is delighted about her foal by Fürstenball, which was just born. Furthermore, her half-sister Jazzy by Jazz is a member of Matthies quintet. All descendants of Wivian by White Star are good, Jürgen Matthies says. He talks about the right sister to Donna Felina, which is called Donna Felice. She sold on the elite auction in 2012 for 160, Euros and was the most expensive dressage horse. By now, she celebrates placements at the S-level. Unfortunately she did not belong to the breeder nor to me at the time As often as time allows, he attends events in Verden. As the long-standing vice president of the driving committee of the DOKR (German Olympic Committee for Riding), the national championships are very important to him. Gabriele Wagner, his reliable partner from day one, is a crucial member of Jürgen Matthies team. I am very fortunate to have people like Wagner. I could not do the breeding program or the competitions without her, Jürgen Matthies says. It allows me to do other things as well. Charitable engagement is important to me. The entire barn community comes along, when we put horses in harnesses on shows. We were known for driving the exercises very correctly, Gabriele Wagner shares. She runs a tack shop together with her husband Karl-Heinz just five houses down the street from Family Matthies. Our main focus is the work with the horses, not the desire to win. The chapter competitions is over. Over the course of the past years, everything has become so much more technical. In earlier times, the horses level of training was tested on the obstacle course; today the competitors race through the cones as fast as they can. Jürgen Matthies did not put the lines away entirely. At least once a weak, he puts his horses in harness. Young horses are trained pulling a cart. He also offers his advice and shares expertise with others. I do not understand, why drivers from Lower Saxony drive to the Netherlands to look for driving horses, he says. This is a current trend. Driving horses are not offered for sale. Supposedly the demand in driving horses is of no interest to breeders. Jürgen Matthies greatly enjoys driving horses in traditional harness with historic carriages. I borrowed the first carriage. In the meantime, I own a few including a Dos-a-Dos, Jürgen Matthies says. There is something very good about horses: If you keep busy with horses, there is no time left for anything else, the businessman says smilingly. When I sit on my carriage, I am able to relax beautifully. I definitely want to participate in Celle s traditional show during the summer. I just want to have fun with my horses! He still has one more dream though and that is to present a family of horses on a show! In 1997, Jürgen Matthies became Team World Champion in Riesenbeck for the second time. 20 Auction Sport Overjoyed customers from France. A total of five horses sold to the neighboring country. division, horses have to complete a stadium course and a test on the flat similar to a materiale class, in which the basic gaits and the rideability are evaluated. The horses have to jump the stadium course in a very quiet, effortless, steady and rhythmical style. The jumps measure 60 to 120 centimeters in height according to the level of difficulty. The focus is not only on remaining faultless over the fences, but also on properly riding the distances between the fences. Which attributes does an ideal hunter have to have to complete the hunter course in the best possible way obtaining the highest points? A hunter shifts his weight on to his hind quarters before take-off; Marketplace for Hunters Verden s auction took place on May 7 th realizing solid results. Sixty riding horses and sixty-one foals changed owners. For the second time, the team of auctioneers, Bernd Hickert and Frederik De Backer, led through the sale in a masterful fashion. By Malte Kanz Since some time now, it is no longer a secret that Verden s auction arena is known as a place, where you can find suitable horses for the US American hunter market. Casper demonstrated it already in In 2013, this son of Competent/ Polydor (breeder: Gerd Strohthmeyer, Einbeck) won the most renowned hunter series in the USA, the National Hunter Derby, which offers top prize money. In 2016, another Hanoverian took the lead in the hunter sport. Mindful by Graf Grannus/Bold Indian xx (breeder: Manfred Schäfer, Köchingen) was elected USEF National Hunter of the Year It is amazing that he was able to repeat his victory from the year The US hunter market realized that importing Hanoverian sport horses is beneficial. These horses have all the attributes, which are required for this discipline. In the hunter he jumps with a round back and a nicely arched neck; he jumps with quick front legs, which have to be totally symmetrical; the knees have to be high and tightly bent, the lower part of the leg evenly vertical; on the other side of the fence, he continues to canter in the same rhythmical tempo and finishes the course in a flawless style. The evaluation of the basic gaits follows the stadium course. Here too counts less is more! The horses are expected to exhibit effortless, elastic movement. The rider has a very light contact to the horses mouth, the nose of the horse always is in front of the vertical, the neck stretched forward downward. A well-balanced temperament is an absolutely essential feature of a good hunter. Hence it comes to no surprise that the US hunter market relies on Hanoverian horses. They offer many of these riding characteristics, are reliable partners on jumping courses, while equipped with a lot of ability and subtle moving potential. The collection of Verden s May auction offered a multitude of riding horses, which fulfilled these qualities. One of them became the top seller of this auction: It was four-year old Belissaria, which obtained the highest bid of the day. A renowned hunter trainer from the USA invested 32, Euros for this daughter of Belissimo M/Embassy (breeder: Carsten Cohrs, Scharnhorst; exhibitor: Lena-Marie and Kerstin Klose, Burgwedel). Victoria Jade Har- 20 The Hanoverian

Sport Auction ding trained the mare in dressage during the preparation time, while jumper rider Roman Duchac rode her through the stadium courses. The US trainer bought a second rising youngster for the hunter discipline. Nice to Have by Now or Never M/ Mont du Cantal AA (breeder: Andre Vagts, Bargstedt; exhibitor: State Stud Celle) will also cross the ocean. The four-year old bay gelding with his eventempered disposition sold for 20, Euros. The first horse of the collection will also be prepared for the challenges of being a hunter. Don Devino by Deveraux/Stalypso (breeder: Carsten Nancken, Loxstedt) opened the sale. This 2013-born stallion impressed with his multi-talented attributes. He is subtle like a dressage horse and powerful like a jumper. And these are the attributes, which convinced the buyer to invest 16, Euros. The stallion will remain in Germany for more careful training, before he will start his journey across the ocean. Sixty riding horses sold including Ferris by Fürst Romancier/Natiello xx (breeder: ZG Königs, Bodenstein; exhibitor: Tundi Andersson, Sjoebo/Sweden), the top-selling dressage horse. The chestnut gelding sold to a new customer from France. The big dressage prospect impressed with his accentuated moving mechanics, his natural talent and willingness for collection. His video at YouTube was watched more than 3,500 times. Very pleased A total of twenty-five riding horses found a new home with foreign customers. The largest contingent a total of six horses went to Belgium, followed by five horses each to France and the United States. We are very pleased that eight horses sold to buyers from North-Rhine Westphalia. Some of these buyers attended the Day of the Hanoverian Horse, which took place at the horse Centre at the Castle Wickrath in the beginning of April. A few horses of the May collection were presented there in an exhibition, which was a successful advertisement for Verden s auction. The sale of Cantinero to a customer in Schleswig- Holstein has an interesting history as well. Its buyer accompanied a friend to a dressage clinic with Hans-Heinrich Meyer zu Strohen, which the Hannoveraner Verband had organized and which took place at Verden s training Centre during the auction preparation time. Since her equestrian interests predominantly lie with jumpers, she used some of the time watching the auction horses in their training sessions in the arena of Lower Saxony. It was then that she fell in love with the descendant of Contendros/Rabino (breeder: Karin Wallbaum, Hannover; exhibitor: Bernhard Gärtner) and bought him on the sale. The purchase of Samba Girl by Sir Donnerhall/Riccione has a similarly wonderful story. Her buyer from Switzerland had been looking for a suitable horse for quite some time, when she received the following recommendation from regular customers, If you are looking for a good dressage horse, then you just have to attend an auction in Verden! Said and done! The four-year old mare from breeder Peter Jan Schlueschen in Aach is now in Swiss ownership. The foal collection with sixty-nine participants, which entered the auction ring, was extensive. A lot of foals were presented at the pre-selection, which convinced with quality, auction manager Jörg-Wilhelm Wegener said. Just like at the Marchauction, the foal collection was very much appreciated. The foal, which had the longest trip to Verden, was the most favored: Dolomit by Dimaggio/ Sir Donnerhall was born in Bavaria. The colt (breeder: Dieter Hilz, Spiegelau) sold for 22, Euros to a horse enthusiast from North-Rhine Westphalia, who brings up stallions. The average price for 61 foals that sold was 5,743 Euros. In February 2016, his quality was endorsed when he won Champion Warmblood stallion three to five years old at the National South African Horse of the Year show. Congratulations to his breeder and owner Stafford Robinson. Stallions Westernhagen put to sleep With sad regret we received the news that the stallion Westernhagen by Weltmeyer/ Landadel (b.: Axel Windeler, Verden/GER, o.: Annerie Myburgh, Robertson/ZA) had to be put to sleep in April. Westernhagen was born in In 2001, he won his stallion performance test in Redefin. His breeder kept him as a stallion until 2010 when he sold him to Annerie Myburgh in South Africa. At the beginning of April Westernhagen got colic. He was operated but did not recover again and had to be put down. The Hanoverian

International Breeding Hanoverian Highlights Approaching new ways Since the beginning of the year the Hannoveraner Team USA exists. This is a partnership between the Hannoveraner Verband and four internationally successful dressage riders from the United States. By Juliane Kruse Chuck and Janne Friederike Meyer Photo: Lafrentz July 16 Verden-Auction Sport horses and foals August 3 to 7 International Dressage and Jumping Festival Herwart v. d. Decken-Show August 5/6 Verden-Auction Foals and broodmares October 7/8 132 nd Elite-Auction Sport horses and foals The Hannoveraner Verband approaching new ways is nothing unusual. Since the beginning of this year a partnership with four dressage riders from the USA exists: Endel Ots, Sabine Schut-Kery, David Wightman and Kathleen Raine work with the Hannoveraner Verband to advocate for good training and horse management. The Hannoveraner Team USA receives special support from Christine Traurig, US National Trainer of Young Dressage Horses. Christine Traurig has been born near Verden, her parents bred Hanoverians that they marketed through the auction. Christine herself achieved an exceptional career. Only 13 years old, she spent her school vacations at the Hannoveraner Verband to help out wherever she could. That caught the attention of Helga and Hans Joachim Köhler, from this moment she was trained by Helga Koehler. Like the Köhler family also former German National Trainer Holger Schmezer recognized her talent, and asked her to ride horses at his stable after hours at college. With age 17 (!) Christine was allowed to present her first auction candidate in the Niedersachsenhalle. From then on she remained a valued member of the Verden Family until 1982 when she met Bernie Traurig. After moving to the US she became a well-known name in the US dressage scene and made it to the Olympic Games in 2000 where she earned a bronze medal with the US Team. The knowledge Christine acquired in Verden is now passed on in the United States. Hannoveraner Verband e. V. Lindhooper Str. 92 Niedersachsenhalle D Verden Phone /67 30 Fax / Rider-Exchange Program During my time with the Hannoveraner Verband every moment was an experience for me and riding in the Elite Auction was the best time of my life. Furthermore, it was there that I learned what teamwork means, says Christine Traurig. To enab- Christine Traurig Photo: Eurodressage le young US riders who find themselves at the beginning of their career to experience the life at the Hannoveraner Verband, a two months training period during the Golden Autumn in Verden has been organized. Besides getting to know the training of riders and horses in Verden, the young riders will receive theory lessons, and participate in excursions and visits to local landmarks. After the training period, the Hannoveraner Verband will keep supporting the riders and hopes to include them in the strong partner network. It is our mission to further the Hanoverian Horse in breeding and sport. An essential part thereof is to support riders and provide them with the necessary knowledge to train young horses, because every horse can only be as good as it is trained by its rider, as Dr. Schade explains.

Sport Hannoveraner Verband Hannoveraner Team USA An essential part of the work of the Hannoveraner Verband is not only the support of young riders, but also the improvement of the equestrian sport as a whole. The Hannoveraner Verband is representative for breeding, sport and training. To enhance exactly this correct training and horse management in the United States the Hannoveraner Verband works with four internationally successful dressage riders that help represent its values in the US. The Hannoveraner Verband is proud of each member of this team, who have all been coached and selected by Christine Traurig. What all of them have in common: Focus on correct training, sustainable horse management and, of course, good riding. Kathleen Raine and David Wightman Part of the Hannoveraner Team are Kathleen Raine and husband David Wightman. The couple lives in Murietta, California. Kathleen Raine has presented her skills already twice for USA in World Cups and the World Equestrian Games. Our Auction customers also know her success horse, Breanna by Brentano II/Weltmeyer (Breeder: Walter Rauen, Spelle). The internationally successful pair could be found on the Auction cover of the January Auction Breanna found her way to the US through the 111 th Elite Auction in Verden 2004, where she was discovered and acquired by David Wightman. With Kathleen in the saddle the mare has become a serious competitor and one of the international hopes of the United States. Kathleen and Breanna are supported by David Wightman, himself a successful dressage rider to the highest level. David Wightman represented the United States twice in Verden on the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses. His current rising star is the six year old Silberschmied/ Boss-son Silberpfeil, bred by Dirk Ettwig from Neuenkirchen-Vluyn. David and Silberpfeil have been able to finish fourth in last year s US Championship for Young Dressage Horses in Lamplight, Chicago and are qualified for the World Championships in Ermelo (Netherlands) this year. Furthermore David trains national and international riders and has a special focus on correct training and education of young riders. Endel Ots Another member of the team is Endel Ots from Wellington, Florida. Endel was a positive surprise last year with his first start on the World Championships for Young Dressage Horses in Verden. As a newcomer he represented the United States for the 5 and 6-year old dressage horses. For the 5-year olds with his Hanoverian gelding Lucky Strike by Lord Laurie/His Highness (Breeder: Monika Hartwich, Boetersen). In the small final the pair went second and in the big final their achievement was awarded with rank eleven, which many people will still remember him for. Early this year the pair secured their place for the World Championship for Young Dressage horses in Ermelo. Endel Ots, in the US not only a successful rider up to Grand Prix, but also well known as a trainer. One of his talents is BeBe Davis, ranking first on the list of young dressage riders in the US, 5 th internationally. Sabine Schut-Kery From Thousand Oaks, California, Sabine Schut- Kery has joined the team with her 10 year old Hanoverian Sanceo by San Remo/Ramiro s Son II (Breeder: Gerhard Dustmann, Melle). Special about this pair is that both are from Germany. Sabine Schut-Kery is born and raised in Krefeld. She found her success horse Sanceo on the farm of the Westendarp family, where his current owners Alice Womble-Heitman and Dr. Mike Heitman acquired him. The success I have with Sanceo would not be possible without the support of Alice and her family, so Sabine. The pair also represented the USA at the World Championships of Young Dressage Horses. Furthermore they achieved high ranks at the National Young Horse Championships in Lamplight, Chicago and last year they have been able to secure team gold at the Pan Am Games. This year first victories in Grand Prix could be secured and Sanceo and Sabine now lead the ranking of Development Grand Prix in the US. We are at the beginning of a new project and very excited to see what is coming. In every case we look forward to work with these high quality partners and thank Christine Traurig for enabling this opportunity.
