Duluth East Girls Soccer Team Handbook Contents: 1. Team Explanations 2. Grade Level Expectations 3. Tryout Information 4. Registration Information 5. Individual/Team Rules 6. Process for Complaints Hello Greyhounds- Duluth East Soccer tryouts are held in mid-august every season. This is my 5 th season with the girls soccer program and I am very excited about the upcoming season. Being part of the Duluth East Girls Soccer program is a very big honor, one that does not come easy. You will have to work harder than you ever have, returners included!!! This program has a long history of success which includes many trips to the state tournament and once being rated by the NSCAA as a top 25 team in the nation. Make sure you put yourself in the best position possible to make a team, be in the best shape of your lives, listen to your summer coaches, play hard and learn from mistakes and victories. We have an outstanding schedule this season against some of the best competition the state has to offer- Andover, Eden Prairie, Woodbury, Eagan, Rosemount, Wayzata, Lakeville North, Eastview and Edina to name a few. We will take the best players for the team, best is defined by those who are: hard working, skilled, coach-able, dedicated, driven, team players, strong, fast, fearless, leaders, and who want to go past their comfort zone. Please note that the top players will be selected for each team, teams will be determined during the tryout period. Past team placement, summer clubs and past performances will not come into play when selecting the teams. Contact Information: Steve Polkowski- Head Coach houndssoccercoach@gmail.com
Team Explanations: We will continue to select The Top 40 to define our varsity and jv teams, this will allow for more fluidity between varsity and jv teams rather than placing players on teams early in the season. The ending varsity roster will be comprised of the top 22 healthy players from that top 40. The Top 40- The top forty soccer players (36 field players, 4 keepers) of any age level will be placed on either the varsity or jv soccer team. These forty players will train together all year long to compete for a spot on the varsity team. Movement between these teams will happen based on play, injury or illness. A player who earns a varsity spot one week is not guaranteed a spot the following week. This will create constant competition and raise expectations during practices. Teams will be posted each Sunday for the first 4-8 weeks prior to the section tournament or until there is a clear varsity team. Varsity- Is the top 16 field players and top two keepers at any time of the year. Varsity is eligible for any player of any age (senior-7th grader) provided they are one of the top sixteen players/two keepers at that time. A player who is named to varsity can be moved to junior varsity due to play, injury or illness. To be a varsity player the player must prove to be: skilled, hardworking and a team player (in no particular order). There is NO guaranteed playing time at the varsity level. Junior Varsity- Is the next 20 field players and 2 keepers. A player who is named to the junior varsity may be moved up to varsity if their play, work ethic or dedication to the team deems it appropriate. This team is eligible for any player who is between the grades of Junior and 7th grade. Equal playing time is NOT guaranteed at the junior varsity level. B-Team- This is a non-school district team that consists of 18 players between the grades of Sophomore and 7th grade. Because this is a non-school district team players who are named to the B-Team are not able to be moved up to the Varsity/JV team. Movement between the B & C teams can occur based on play, injury or illness. Equal playing time is NOT guaranteed at this level. C-Team- This is a non-school district team that consists of 18 players between the grades of Freshmen and 7th grade. Because this is a non-school district team players who are named to the C-Team are not able to be moved up to the Varsity/JV team. Movement between the B & C teams can occur based on play, injury or illness. Equal playing time is NOT guaranteed at this level. MS Team- This is a non-school district team that consists of 19 players between 7th-8th grades. Because this is a non-school district team, players who make the MS team are not able to be moved up to the Varsity/JV team. Equal playing time is NOT guaranteed at this level.
Grade Level Explanations: Seniors: Varsity Only- This means that a senior must finish in the top 16 field players of any age after tryouts or top two goal keepers. Seniors that have made the original varsity team after tryouts could potentially play junior varsity due to injury or illness. Juniors: Varsity or Junior Varsity- In order to make varsity after tryouts a field player must finish in the top 16 field players or two keepers. A junior must finish in the top 36 (top 16 play varsity) field players of any age or the top four goal keepers (top 2 play varsity) to play junior varsity. Juniors that make the top 16 out of after tryouts may be moved down to jv based on play, injury or illness. Juniors that make the top 36 field players or top 4 keepers may be moved between varsity and junior varsity during the season. Sophomores: Varsity, JV or B-Team- Sophomores have the same opportunity as Juniors when it comes to varsity or jv (top 16 field players/2 keepers for varsity, 36 field players/4 keepers for jv). Sophomores who make varsity or jv after tryouts may be moved between the two teams during the year based on play, injury or illness. Sophomores are also able to play B-Team soccer, the B-Team has no affiliation with the high school and players who make the B-Team cannot be moved to JV/Varsity during the season. Freshmen: Varsity, JV, B or C-Team- Freshmen can make any of the four teams. In order to make varsity a freshman must be in the top 16 field players or two keepers, jv would be the top 36 (including 16 varsity) or four keepers (including 2 varsity), freshmen who make varsity/jv may be moved between the two teams based on play, injury or illness. Freshmen can also play B-Team provided their skills put them in that tier of players. The fourth team that a freshman is eligible for is the C-Team, if a freshman makes either the B or C team they may be moved between teams during the year based on play, injury or illness. Because the B & C teams have no high school affiliation a freshman on B or C team is not eligible to move up to Varsity/JV at any point during the year. 7th & 8th Graders: Varsity, JV, B, C or MS Team- A middle school aged player is eligible to play on any of the 5 teams in this program. If a middle school player, after tryouts, rates in the top 36 field players or 4 keepers that makes them eligible for Varsity/JV soccer, in order to play this level a meeting between the player, parent and coach must take place and the proper middle school student to varsity/jv criteria must be completed. A middle school student is also eligible for the B or C provided their skill level puts them in that tier of players.
Tryout Information: Tryout Info: Monday August 17 at Jean Duluth (Backup at Ordean Middle School if weather is bad) Monday 7:00-9:00-7 th -9 th Graders 9:00-11:00-10 th -12 th Graders 1:00-2: th Graders 2: th Graders Tuesday - 7:00-9:00-7 th -9 th Graders 9:00-11:00-10 th -12 th Graders 1:00-2: th Graders 2: th Graders Movement During Tryouts- In order to best evaluate each player there will be players that will be moved up during the tryout process. This is to allow the advanced soccer player to show their skill against older competition as well as to allow other players to showcase their skills against similar abilities. Movement of players can happen at any point during the tryout process, no players will be moved down during this process. Fitness Tests- Fitness is a major part of soccer; speed, agility and endurance are all things that coaches look for. There may be up to five tests given to evaluate these areas: 60 yard sprint, shuttle run, two mile run, Scottish 18 s and s. This will accurately demonstrate individuals abilities in each of the areas. What Coaches Look For- Athletic Ability- strength, speed & quickness Shooting- proper technique, accuracy & power Passing- accurate, proper speed/touch Soccer Sense- ability to be involved in the game Movement- what you do away from the ball Heading- fearless, attacking the ball Finishing- composure around the net Trapping- under control and with purpose Sportsmanship- teammates & coaches Enthusiasm- passion for the game
Registration Information: All forms, fees, and physicals must be completed before participating in girls soccer. To find the forms you can visit the Duluth East activities office or visit dulutheastsoccer.com and print them off. ATTENTION ALL SOPHOMORES- You MUST have a physical on file prior to the start of tryouts, failure to do this will result in not being allowed to tryout and will result in you not being able to participate in Duluth East Athletics. GET THIS DONE!!! Team Rules/Policies Each parent and student should read all team rules as well as rules put out by the Minnesota State High School League. Academic Progress- Duluth East girls soccer will follow the MSHSL rules for academic eligibility, stricter standards may be given if patterns of study are seen as unacceptable by coaches, administration, faculty or parents. Appearance- Players should report to games wearing proper Duluth East gear that reflects positively on the program and the school. Returning Home- Players are expected to ride back with the team on the bus. Team bus rides are considered team activities! Parents should talk to the head coach about any circumstances before the bus leaves. Parents MUST provide a note that releases them from the team that is signed and dated by the activities department and given to the coach PRIOR to leaving for the game. Attendance Policy- All players are required to attend each practice and game unless preapproved by coaches. If you miss school (unless for school approved activity) you cannot participate in school activities (practice or game). Bus, Locker and Bench Procedures- As a team you are required to keep the bus, locker and bench area in perfect condition, be responsible!!!
Conduct on the Field- You are expected to conduct yourself in a first-class manner at all times. All rules for the MSHSL Athletic Eligibility Statement are to be followed. Especially note the Student Code. All actions on the field are a reflection of yourself, your family, your team, your coaches and your school, act accordingly. You are required to treat coaches, teammates, officials and fans with respect. Players are also expected to adhere to the rules set by the school, city, county, state and county. Anyone in violation of these rules is subject to disciplinary action and will not be eligible for post-season awards. Violations of these rules shall result in game and practice suspensions based on the severity of the offense. All players are subject to the Minnesota State High School League Rules and Eligibility requirements that are available in the East activities office. Lettering Policy- In order to letter in soccer you must fall into one of the following categories: play in over ½ of the games or, in the opinion of the coaching staff, the individual has made a significant contribution to the team. Open Door Policy- If you have any questions, comments, or problems feel free to discuss them with us. It is important to keep soccer matters within our soccer family and not discuss problems with the media or post your complaints on social media. As a member of a team it is important that you realize that your personal choices affect other members of the team. Discuss additional activities involving time and energy with your coach prior to your involvement to ensure that neither you nor the team is adversely affected.
Process for Complaints Traditionally the major area of complaining revolves around playing time, playing time in the high school program is not guaranteed. The coaches have the freedom to play a player as much or as little as they feel needed which is determined by the situation of the game. The process of complaining MUST be respected and followed. 24 Hour Rule- Individuals who are upset must wait until 24 hours after a game to bring up a complaint. This allows individuals time to think with a level head and take the emotion out of the situation, this will result in a more affective and productive conversation. 1. Player to Coach- Players are now young adults, it is time they take responsibility for addressing problems/issues they have with the coach. This is the first step and no other method of complaining is acceptable until this conversation happens. 2. Player, Parent & 2 Coaches- If the original issues were not addressed to the satisfaction of the individual an additional meeting may be scheduled with a parent and an additional coach. The player MUST be present at this meeting and is responsible for leading the meeting. If the issue is with a coach other than Steve, Steve must be the other coach present at the meeting. 3. Player, Parent, 2 Coaches & Activities Director- If after the first two meetings the issues is still not addressed it is appropriate to meet with the activities director for a sit down meeting. Again, the player MUST be in attendance and will be responsible for leading the meeting. 4. If the issue is still not resolved we would then move to involvement of additional school administration or the school board. This is the process for complaining; s will not be read or responded to in any manner. E- mails often times can be taken out of context and messages can be misunderstood, to insure this doesn t happen complaints through will be immediately deleted. If a parent complains before a player-coach meeting the parent will be reminded of the process and the conversation at that point will end. I am looking forward to another successful season!!! GO GREYHOUNDS!!!
