8 stallion service auction 24th Annual AHS Stallion Service Auction Recap By Nancy Connolly The 2016 AHS Stallion Service Auction concluded with an exciting last couple of days of bidding, and super donations given by our supportive stallion owners. This year s auction had an extensive reach to many disciplines, and some exciting new stallions to the AHS which led to an always exciting frenzy of bidding! There were some new breeding options open as well as the beginnings of the Rhineland Studbook additions are being rolled out in Forty-one stallion services in 31 lots were donated and available for bidding. In the end a total of $20,675 in gross sales was raised. Several stallion owners offered a choice of multiple stallions, with options for both fresh and frozen semen giving potential breeders a number of options from which to choose. This year s auction was again run by Tim Jennings, and Sporthorseauctions. com. This format gave us the ability to not only reach out to AHS members but increase exposure for the stallion owners to multiple areas and registries. The exposure ran the gamut of s, Facebook promotions, chat boards, and newsletters to increase awareness of offerings, and help to raise the monies that so generously support our awards programs! Many additional breed registries had followed the AHS lead with on line auctions, so competition was fierce and increased options available for potential breeders looking for Mr. Right for their mare. The online auction bidders ranged from across the U.S. and Canada. Each year we are seeing new bidders join the auction, exemplifying the increased reach for our Stallion owners. Stallion listings were available for preview only for the first two weeks, with active bidding really beginning the final week of the auction. Things were typically pretty quiet until the last two days of bidding, when things truly heated up. The bidding this year was as competitive as ever for recognized AHS stallion favorites as well as new kids on the block. By auction s close, a total of seven stallions had bids exceeding $1,000. The top bid honor of this year s auction was for the Leatherdale stallions now standing at Bridlewood Farm, choice of Herzensdieb, First Dance, or Hampton, for the high bid of $1,550! Second place went to Qredit owned in errata and standing at Hilltop Farm at a bid of $1,425, followed closely by Devon Heir owned by Terry Mason-Esteban, standing at Hunter Stallion Station with a bid of $1,375. Other very popular stallions were the choice of Sir Gregory, Freestyle, Checkmate, or Chacco s Rubin DSF which sold for $1,275, Pikko del Cerro HU ($1,275), Lagoheidor ($1,000), and Apiro ($1,000). The average price for a stallion bid this year was slightly down, but the enthusiasm of bidders was still very high with a good result for this year s auction, considering the increase in stallion service auctions offered on line. 4 DEVON HEIR On page 55 of the 2016 AHS Stallion Directory, the photo of Devon Heir (De Niro-Ribana/ Rubinstein I) was incorrectly proportioned resulting in distortion of the photo. 9 This year s professionally run, on-line auction results were a bit lower this year than last year s record breaking outcome. The auction itself ran without a hitch and allowed all bidders to get in on the bidding for their favorite stallions. We received some on-going great critique from members for potential improvements which the AHS is always striving for. Next year s format will be expanded to include Rhineland stallions as well which will expand the options available to breeders. This year s auction was once again our registry s biggest fund raiser, and those funds raised are passed along to our members in the form of the awards programs, and promotion of the American Hanoverian Society. First and foremost we want to thank the generous donations of participating American and Canadian stallion owners, who agreed to participate, along with all the bidders who successfully gained a stallion service for their mares. These individuals combined to make this annual fund raiser tremendously successful. Many thanks go to Tim Jennings and Sporthorseauctions.com, the central office, and volunteers. 15 president s message Spring is here which means we are seeing lots of foals being born. When all goes well it s so fun to have the excitement of breeding back our mares with our selection of stallions. The newborn and the not yet born, promise and anticipation, and always thinking of future generations to come. They say it s the journey and not the destination and experienced breeders all know that s true. Those who don t believe that won t be breeding for very long. On pages you will see reports of our latest AHS Annual Meeting in West Palm Beach, Fla. We had a great time in sunny Wellington and enjoyed the speakers, the horse show activity and the company of fellow breeders. The growth and presence of our AHS Young Breeders group was significant and the activities and educational programs superb to the point that the USEF young riders are joining with our Young Breeders group later this year for a camp. An official Young Breeders Committee was formed, chaired by Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz. In response to this great and growing group of young people the board has now changed the existing Junior AHS membership to a $25 Junior/Young Breeder/ Young Rider under the age of 25 membership. Thanks to Anne Sparks for hosting this well-received meeting event. Members enjoyed a great reception and fun commentary from judge Kristi Wysocki while watching Dressage at Global. It was fun to see Anne s stallion Pikko del Cerro HU perform and do so well with rider Lisa Wilcox. Many more speakers, classes and great performances were a treat to watch in beautiful weather and surroundings. It was decided to have the AHS Annual Meeting in Wellington once again in 2017 January 27th through the 29th. As you may know the new American Rhineland Studbook (ARS) became a fact right after we introduced it to the members at the annual meeting. We were open for business when we returned from Florida. The first Rhineland foal papers have since been issued. I m incredibly proud of the accomplishments of the Rhineland Committee, our new Rhineland studbook representative Heather Stanley, and the AHS office for picking up the momentum to make it all work. Rick Toering wrote a great Rhineland article in Warmbloods Today. If you have not yet seen the website www. Rhineland.org you should check it out. Kate Palmquist did a super job with design, data and online forms. ARS press releases have gone out. Letters have been sent to AHS members with qualifying mares and stallions that we know of. Breeders are taking advantage of free transfers with qualifying mares from other breed populations and a number of mares and stallions are being accepted. A USDF Breed of the Month article for ARS will be published in an upcoming issue of USDF Connections. An ARS awards program is in place and foal ribbons have been sponsored thanks to Meg Williams. An ARS Facebook page is in the works so check it out. The tour dates and sites are set and before we know it we will be showing off our mares and foals. Breeders can now bring their Rhineland qualifying horses along with the Hanoverians to the same AHS sites. One membership, two registry options! The inspection schedule will not change much as the Rhineland qualifying mares will be in the non-hanoverian group this tour and the foals will be all in the same group. 16 administration The American Hanoverian Society Minutes of the Board of Directors Teleconference Call January 11, 2016 AHS President Edgar Schutte called the meeting of the Board to order at 4:00 p.m. Eastern. Present: Nancy Connolly, Rachel Ehrlich, Doug Langer, Kate Palmquist, Barbara Schmidt, Edgar Schutte, Anne Sparks, Rick Toering, Cathy Tucker-Slaterbeck, Meg Williams, and Executive Director Hugh Bellis-Jones. Not present: Volker Ehlers. Motion to approve the minutes of November 24, 2015, Passed. The Board noted the passing of AHS Past President Doug Leatherdale and extended its condolences to his widow Louise. Hugh Bellis-Jones and Barbara Schmidt reviewed the many accomplishments of this extraordinary individual. Hugh Bellis-Jones reported the results of the recent membership referendum regarding the revisions to the AHS bylaws and rules of registration. A total of 196 members voted (21%) of which 191 voted to approve the proposed revisions. Edgar Schutte thanked the Rules Committee for seeing this major task through to its completion. As a result of the referendum vote the AHS will introduce and implement the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS) in the United States effective this year. Treasurer s Report. Doug Langer thanked Executive Director Hugh Bellis-Jones and Finance Committee member Vanessa Carlson for producing the first draft of a proposed 2016 budget. Dr. Langer noted that the 2015 proposed numbers had proven to be very accurate. The Committee had reviewed the proposed budget in detail and Dr. Langer explained significant aspects to the Board. Motion to approve the Finance Committee s proposed 2016 AHS budget. Passed. Nancy Connolly reported on plans for the 2016 stallion service auction. The auction will open on January 24 and will close on February 4. As in the recent past the auction will be conducted solely online and will be administered Tim Jennings Flashpoint Bloodstock, LLC. 4 THE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN

17 Meeting Chair Anne Sparks reported on final preparations for the upcoming annual membership meeting that will be held January in West Palm Beach, Florida. This year the AHS Young Breeders Group will be very much involved in various events at the meeting. Hugh Bellis-Jones reported that the AHS room block has been completely filled and that accommodations, meeting spaces and food functions had all been arranged with the site hotel. President Edgar Schutte noted that on January 13 Hugh Bellis-Jones would represent the AHS at the USEF Breeders Committee Meeting when microchipping and possible USEF rules changes on this subject would be a major topic for discussion. Rick Toering led a discussion on the AHS presence on Facebook and the need to remain current on this social platform. Motion to increase the number of administrators on the AHS Facebook page, such individuals to be determined by President Edgar Schutte. Passed. Dr. Ludwig Christmann was present from the Hanoverian Verband (HV). Motion to approve the minutes of the Board s January 16, 2016 meeting. Passed. The next order of business was election of officers for 2016: Motion to elect Barbara Schmidt as Executive Vice-President. Passed. Motion to elect Rick Toering as Vice President. Passed. Motion to elect Nancy Connolly as Secretary. Passed. Motion to elect Doug Langer as Treasurer. Passed. President s Report: Mr. Schutte welcomed everyone to the meeting and extended a special welcome to Verband representative Dr. Ludwig Christmann. He noted the recent passing of former AHS President Doug Leatherdale and his many contributions to the society. The office remains busy providing good service to the membership. The membership referendum to revise the AHS Bylaws and Rules of Registration passed overwhelmingly. As a consequence, the AHS will adopt and administer the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS) in this country beginning this year. The society is financially stable. Executive Director s Report: Hugh Bellis-Jones provided a concise report on AHS office activities for He thanked Annual Meeting Chair Anne Sparks for her outstanding work in organizing this meeting and noted that about 110 persons would be in attendance. The inspection tour went well in 2015 with positive feedback from the membership. The AHS received a clean audit from auditors Ray, Foley and Hensley and Mr. Bellis-Jones thanked Treasurer Doug Langer for his careful oversight of AHS finances. He noted the positive development this past year of the AHS s Young Breeders Program. He also explained to the Board that the office is ready to administer the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS) in 2016; all necessary revisions to AHS s database have been implemented by USEF who provide IT services to the society. Mr. Bellis-Jones closed his report by thanking his staff for their work throughout the year. The Board next discussed and appointed the following 2016 Committee Members: Motion to appoint Kate Palmquist, Barbara Schmidt, Rick Toering, and Hugh Bellis-Jones to the Rules and Grievances Committee. The Board discussed the development of the Young Breeders Program and how it had grown in numbers over 4 SPRING

The Board sees this as a very positive development and thanked Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz for her work with these young people who are seen as the future of the society. Motion to establish an AHS Young Breeders Committee, its members to comprise Rachel Ehrlich, Don Kapper, Christine Kropf, Doug Langer, Gina Leslie, Anne Sparks, Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz, and Kirstin Witasek. Passed. Motion to appoint Anne Sparks, Hugh Bellis-Jones, Meredith Michelfelder, Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz and Don and Dee Kapper to the 2016 Annual Meeting Committee. Passed. Meg Williams, Chair, gave the Mare and Stallion Committee report. Each member of this committee had received a vote of confidence from his/her peers. She led an in-depth discussion on the linear profiling of mares, how it is used and how it is used to collect data on the mare population. Dr. Christmann noted that linear profiling provides an educational and detailed description of each horse. This may be introduced by the AHS at a future date but at this time more training and education is required by the judges. The Board reviewed a Learner Judge application and biography from Verne Batchelder. Motion to accept Verne Batchelder as a Learner Judge for the 2016 inspection tour. Passed. The Mare and Stallion Committee came with a recommendation to the Board that the required score for Hanoverian Premium Mare status (formerly Elite Mare status) be increased from 7.0 (42 points) to 7.33 (44 points). An in depth discussion was held on this topic. Also, discussion encompassed possibly introducing a similar program as in Germany, where, at each inspection during the walk ring, the judges award a 1A Prize to a select group of top mares. Motion that the Mare and Stallion Committee recommendation be tabled until full data is compiled and made available for the Board s review. Passed. The Mare and Stallion Committee would like to work directly with the Hanoverian Verband to produce specific criteria by which hunter stallions may be approved through performance. Dr. Christmann noted that this would require a change to the breeding rules in Germany. Motion that the AHS appoint a committee consisting of Volker Ehlers, Rick Toering, and Meg Williams to formalize the performance requirements for a hunter stallion to be approved in the United States. Passed. Dr. Ludwig Christmann provided his report from Germany. The stallion test is undergoing changes in Germany; the 30-Day Test will be replaced by a two week test and the 70- Day Test will be reduced to 50 days. A licensed but not tested stallion will no longer be issued a breeding license. At a minimum, the stallion must have at least successfully completed the two week test. The stallion testing will no longer incorporate breeding values or a breeding index. In addition, cross country will no longer be a part of the testing. Anna Kollberg was reelected as President of Hanoverian International. The AHS did not send a representative to the fall meeting. Hanoverian International may introduce its own awards program. Dr. Christmann noted that with the passing of Doug Leatherdale the AHS would need to appoint a replacement delegate. Motion to appoint Edgar Schutte as an AHS delegate to Hanoverian International. Passed. The other delegate is Executive Director Hugh Bellis-Jones. In terms of marketing, the HV and AHS enjoyed good cooperation in This year, the HV will place its future marketing emphasis on Internet advertising and social media and will not cosponsor any advertising with the AHS in print publications. The HV would like to continue joint marketing strategies with the AHS in President Edgar Schutte thanked Dr. Christmann for his comprehensive report. New Business: the Board discussed options for the 2017 annual meeting. Motion that the 2017 meeting be held in West Palm Beach, Florida. Passed. The 2017 Annual Meeting Committee will be co-chaired by Anne Sparks and Rachel Ehrlich; the other members will be Hugh Bellis-Jones and Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz. The tentative dates (which may be subject to revision) are January 26-29, Executive Director Hugh Bellis-Jones attended the Breeders Meeting during USEF s January convention. Microchipping was a major topic of discussion. Hugh Bellis-Jones was directed to produce a microchipping proposal for Board review. It was noted that USEF is going to require microchipping for horses competing in USEF-sanctioned events and thus it is probable that the AHS will implement microchipping as part of its registration requirements in the future. In 2016 the Board established a sub-committee consisting of Kate Palmquist, Anne Sparks and Rachel Ehrlich to review the content and possible revisions to the AHS website. A discussion was held during which it was noted that the American Holsteiner Horse Association (AHHA) had recently redesigned its website. Kate Palmquist will work to develop an American Rhineland website using the same Wix platform as AHHA and will report back to the Board at its next teleconference call. 4 THE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN

19 In light of the recent membership referendum, the Board discussed a protocol for introducing the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS) as part of the AHS s operations. Motion to form the American Rhineland Studbook Committee consisting of Natalie DiBerardinis, Doug Langer, Kate Palmquist, Edgar Schutte, Rick Toering, Cathy Tucker-Slaterbeck, and Meg Williams to implement the ARS in the United States. Passed. This new committee was asked to report to the Board during its next teleconference call which was set for February 16 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern. Motion to allocate $1,400 to purchase the domain name Rhineland.org and others associated with the Rhineland registry. Passed. Motion to employ Heather Stanley to implement the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS) for AHS. Passed. Ms. Stanley will not be based at the central office and will be supervised by Kate Palmquist. The Board reviewed staff salaries and awarded performance bonuses. The Board discussed correspondence received from AHS member Judy Hedreen. After extensive discussion it was agreed that Edgar Schutte would discuss its contents directly with Mrs. Hedreen. Not present: Volker Ehlers, Doug Langer, Anne Sparks and Meg Williams. Motion to approve the minutes of the Board s January 29, 2016 meeting. Passed. President s Report: Mr. Schutte thanked everyone for attending the meeting and noted that a number of issues would be discussed, following on from the recent in-person meeting in Florida. Executive Director s Report: Hugh Bellis-Jones reported that the American Rhineland Studbook had been launched and was generating a lot of interest. The winter magazine had been successfully produced and would be posted soon on the website. AHS Website Director Sandy Werkheiser will send out an blast to the membership with a direct link to this issue. Later during this meeting he would report to the Board on the subject of microchipping. Kate Palmquist provided a comprehensive report to the Board regarding the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS). The ARS committee had held a number of meetings and great progress had been made in introducing this new registry option in the United States. The Committee has issued two press releases; the ARS website, whose address is is operational but is still a work in progress. Working with the AHS office a number of ARS forms have been produced and are posted online. Heather Stanley had been engaged to run the ARS office; she is working very closely with Hugh Bellis-Jones on Rhineland eligibility requests for stallions and mares. The Committee will produce an American Rhineland Studbook Facebook page. Following her detailed report, Mrs. Palmquist was thanked by the Board for her timely work on this new studbook. Mr. Toering raised the possibility of incorporating a Pre-Studbook (or equivalent) into the ARS breeding program. This would permit entry level for mares that did not meet the requirements for acceptance into the ARS Studbook or Main Studbook. This issue will be discussed with Dr. Ludwig Christmann. Rick Toering, Chair of the Corporate Rules and Grievances Committee, reported upon a dispute that had arisen between two AHS members regarding the registration of a 2015 Hanoverian filly. The Committee had carefully reviewed written statements from each party regarding this situation. Based upon policy and precedent, the Committee recommended to the Board that the AHS not adjudicate this dispute. Motion to accept the recommendation from the Corporate Rules and Grievance Committee that no exception be made to AHS policies regarding foal registration. Passed. Mr. Toering will write to both parties regarding this decision and encourage them to resolve their dispute, or, failing that, seek redress with the courts. Hugh Bellis-Jones reported on a microchipping survey that he had conducted on behalf of the Board. As part of this overview, Mr. Bellis-Jones contacted 22 equine registries in North America, of which eight presently include or plan to include microchipping as part of their registration procedures. Following the recent (January) USEF rules changes, it is possible that other horse registries will incorporate microchipping as a registration requirement. Mr. Bellis-Jones stated that Summer Stoffel had been working with Microchip ID Systems to negotiate a volume discount price for U.S. warmblood registries and also for USHJA. The Board discussed possible timeframes for introducing microchipping for AHS-registered horses (and, by extension, ARS-registered foals). Mr. Bellis-Jones was directed to report back to the Board with a detailed microchipping proposal which would be discussed during the next teleconference call. The Board next conducted preliminary discussion on a new proposed contract between the Hanoverian Verband (HV) and the American Hanoverian Society. The existing contract has been in effect since December 9, 1994 when the HV ceased its operations in the United States and ceded responsibility for the Hanoverian breeding program in the U.S. to the AHS. The proposed new contract will be reviewed in detail by the Board; it includes a provision for the AHS to operate the American Rhineland Studbook. The Board will discuss the contract in detail during its next teleconference call. 4 SPRING 2016

Not present: Nancy Connolly and and Rick Toering. Motion to approve the minutes of the Board s February 16, 2016 meeting. Passed. President s Report: Mr. Schutte thanked everyone for taking time to attend the teleconference call during which a number of important issues would be discussed. Executive Director s Report: Hugh Bellis-Jones provided a brief update on central office activities. Planning for the next annual meeting is well underway; the convention will be held in West Palm Beach January 27-29, The AHS issued the first set of American Rhineland Studbook papers (ARS) today. The office is up-to-date on all transfers and recordings and has issued all AHS foal papers of 2016 with completed registration requirements. Kate Palmquist provided a comprehensive report to the Board regarding the American Rhineland Studbook (ARS). The ARS website has been completed and is up and running. Through the auspices of USDF, the ARS will be reaching out to dressage competitors in the U.S. that compete on Rhineland papered horses. ARS awards criteria have been posted on the website. A Rhineland Breed of the Month article is being prepared for USDF Connection. Rhineland representative Heather Stanley works closely with the AHS office. Top Rhineland foals will be recognized at this year s inspections and ribbons awarded. The Board discussed whether the ARS should issue Certificates of Pedigree. Motion that the ARS will issue Certificates of Pedigree provided that either the sire or dam is a registered Rhineland that is ARS approved. Passed. The Board discussed possible ARS online advertising; the committee will develop a proposal. Edgar Schutte next led a discussion on a proposed new contract between the Hannoveraner Verband and the American Hanoverian Society. The new contract would replace one that has been in effect since December 9, 1994 when the HV ceased its operations in the United States and ceded responsibility for the Hanoverian breeding program in the U.S. to the AHS. Mr. Schutte will ask Rick Toering to work on this document and anticipates that an agreeable contract will be finalized and signed in the near future. New Business: Rachel Ehrlich updated the Board regarding the Young Breeders Group (YBG). The Board discussed the role of these individuals and other young persons (chiefly competitors) with the association. Motion that the AHS will replace the existing AHS Junior membership with a membership for Junior/Young Riders/Young Breeders, this category to be open to individuals up to 25 years of age. Passed. Motion that the AHS will provide a complimentary 2016 membership to each of the 18 members of the Young Breeders Group. Passed. This will be funded by YBG donations received during the annual meeting. The Executive Director assured the Board that YBG monies are separated from general AHS funds in the society s accounting records. The YBG Committee had discussed the possibility of establishing a scholarship program for financing the group s activities. Barbara Schmidt suggested that the AHS should establish a Foundation for this and other educational purposes. Rachel Ehrlich and Judy Hedreen will report back to the Board with a comprehensive proposal. The Board discussed a detailed marketing proposal that had been submitted by the HV s Dr. Ludwig Christmann. This will require further discussion with the Verband. Doug was a well-known Twin Cities business man with accomplishments too numerous to list but including Chairman and CEO of the St. Paul Companies, Chairman and board member of the Minnesota Orchestra, and board member of United Healthcare. His contributions to education were many including donation of the Leatherdale Equine Center to the University of Minnesota and the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Doug is survived by his wife, Louise, children Mary Jo, Chris, Tim, and Tom, his sister Sharon, and eight grandchildren. Apart from being a community leader, Doug was a loving husband and father and will be greatly missed. Memorials in his name made to the Minnesota Orchestra are appreciated. This was the obituary which was published by the StarTribune. Comments too numerous to mention followed this brief tribute written by friends, co-workers, business associates and even his hair stylist! It is obvious that Mr. Leatherdale was a well-respected and well-loved gentleman. In this special section of The American Hanoverian magazine, AHS members and those associated with him in his Hanoverian adventures share their own special memories of this extraordinary man. The Hanoverian community is saddened by the loss of one of its own and extends condolences to his wife, Louise, and his family. He will be missed. 22 The AHS Remembers Doug Leatherdale HUGH BELLIS-JONES, AHS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR It was with great regret that the AHS learned of the passing of Past President Doug Leatherdale on December 6, 2015, the occasion of his 79th birthday. Doug had been a towering figure in The American Hanoverian Society for two decades. He was elected to the board in 1996 and became President in He served in this capacity until 2011 when he was succeeded by current President Edgar Schutte; Doug remained Past President for a fouryear period following which he retired from the day-to-day activities of the association. In recognition of his outstanding service to the AHS and the Hanoverian horse, in 2011 Doug was elected as an Honorary Member of the society. Towards the end of presidency, Doug, always a humble individual, made a point of telling his Board colleagues that he did not want to outstay his welcome or hold onto the position for too long a period of time. If truth be known, Doug was revered by the Board of Directors who will forever remain grateful for his leadership of the AHS for ten years. I remember my first meeting with Doug as if it were yesterday. During the welcome event held in conjunction with the January 1996 AHS annual meeting in Monterey, Calif., I was introduced to Doug for the very first time. He had just been voted onto the Board and would be an active participant in the next day s New Board meeting. At that time I was oblivious of Doug s accomplishments as a business leader and philanthropist or his political connections but all that would change as Doug and I developed a close friendship that stood the test of time. I made many visits to his showplace farm in Long Lake, Minn., and was frequently a house guest there. He and his devoted wife Louise had a knack for making me feel right at home in their beautifully appointed residence. I never tired of my visits, and knew instinctively that despite Doug s standing as one of the most accomplished businessmen of his generation, he was basically a country gentleman who liked nothing better than to unwind in the company of his devoted Louise and their Hanoverians. Many times Doug gave me conducted barn visits, and he knew every horse intimately. He could recite their pedigrees in great detail and loved to share future breeding plans with me. Nothing gave him greater pleasure than the arrival of a new-born foal and often he would telephone me at my office to share the news of the latest arrival. Three or four years ago, Doug commissioned an autobiography High Expectations authored by Karin Winegar. He told me that he wanted to leave a detailed record of his life for his family. In a touch of irony, this 208- page self-published volume was delivered to Doug the week that he died. In 2014 Karin interviewed me for the book specifically to gain an insight into Doug s role during his years with the AHS. Following is that account: Doug brought business acumen to the association and insisted it be run as a company, said Hugh. It has fairly large amounts of money coming in and going out. Doug was adamant that we run it as a business, and he is a great proponent of transparency and accountability; those were hallmarks of his time as president. He really stressed it and made sure the central office staff and board conducted themselves in that way. Many initiatives took place while he was president, Hugh said. 23 We also overhauled bylaws and revised the breeding rules several times, and Doug played a big role in this. We are a daughter society of the German Hanoverian Society and have reciprocity with their studbook. It is very important that our breeding rules are as similar as possible to those in Germany, and Doug played a huge role in that, too. Doug and Louise have been one of the major breeders both in terms of numbers and quality over the last fifteen to twenty years. They have hosted the annual breed inspections at their farm in Medina, and a number of their mares have been among the top scorers inspected in the U.S. He never misses a board meeting, and he is on the employee benefits subcommittee where is very helpful because of his background in insurance. He s been a big part of my life, very supportive of me. AHS was the first American studbook to gain admittance to this organization, to go through the two-year process, be vetted and voted into it by members. In December 2003 Doug and Hugh traveled to Budapest, Hungary, to make the case for AHS joining this world body, and it has been a full voting member ever since. This gives credibility to our breeding program, Hugh added. It is a very Eurocentric organization, although there are books from Australia, North and South America, and Korea. One principal reason we joined is that the young horse dressage championships are held in Germany every year, and if American papered Hanoverians were to qualify, they could not go unless AHS was a member. One big advantage that came out of our admittance is work on the huge problem in identifying horses - some lose papers, some have identities changes by unscrupulous people. It took a big push to have the fifty-six member studbooks adopt a common method for registering horses. The WBFSH made it a priority to adopt a shared method of numbers assigned to horses so that all the studbooks use the same formula, the Universal Equine Life Number (UELN), a fifteen-digit numbering sequence on papers and in our database. It is critical that all our studbooks be able to communicate with each other, and in 2004 AHS was the first studbook to adopt the UELN. It took us about a year, and some other associations took five or six years they were so crippled by EU red tape. We were the first to actually accomplish the goal. A lot of that credit must go to Doug. When you try to run a corporation and are answerable to a board whose composition changes, he s been a figure of stability all these year, said Hugh. When Doug retired from the board in 2014, he left the association in better shape than when he found it. This excerpt from High Expectations only scratches the surface of Doug s influence on The American Hanoverian Society and Hanoverian breeding in North America. Last week while packaging and shipping out the 2015 year-end awards, I was stuck by the success of Leatherdale Farm-bred horses. Each year the society recognizes the top Hanoverians competing for the AHS USEF and FEI 4-, 5-, and 6-Year-Old Young Horse Awards. In 2015 the AHS recognized six awards winners of which no less than four were products of Doug and Louise s breeding program. These successful dressage horses comprised Hannigan L (Herzensdieb-EM Pia Colada/ Pik L), the Champion 4-year-old; Reserve Champion was Dublin L (Damsey-EM Wibranda/Wolkenstein II). Champion of the 6-Year-Old division was Fighting Chance L (First Dance-EM Helia/Hohenstein) who just bested Reserve Champion Fleur de Lis L (First Dance-EM De La Rosa/De Niro). What an incredible accomplishment for the products of one breeding program! It is to be hoped that these young Hanoverians will continue their winning ways and represent the AHS and the Leatherdales with distinction in the coming years. I can think of no better testament to Doug, a man I am proud to have had as a friend, colleague and trusted confidant. The AHS conveys its deepest sympathies to Louise and their children Mary Jo Emfield, Christopher Leatherdale, Tim Schock and Tom Schock. Doug will be sadly missed. In addition to the four successful dressage horses previously mentioned, the Leatherdales also produced 12 Main Studbook mares, including Elite Mares Havannah L (His Highness-EM Raritaet/Rubinstein I) and Wendelynne L (Wendland I-Dunja Carlos). That year she was the winner the Engler- Friedlaender Memorial Trophy. n The AHS Remembers Doug Leatherdale EDGAR SCHUTTE, AHS PRESIDENT Doug was a gentle man who brought a calm demeanor to the board meetings without a self serving agenda. Never did I hear a bad word about anybody come from Doug s mouth. He spent many selfless hours doing the job he was elected to do and was great at facilitating the board discussions and allowing them to come to their conclusions. It was a pleasure after our meetings or during lunch to hear him talk about some of his competing horses, he was so proud of all of them, with a smile and a glimmer in his eye especially, as a Canadian citizen, about the Canadian horses. He had good reason to be proud as Doug and Louise owned great horses and did very well over the years. Doug and Louise also owned some of the most promising young stallions that were and are still well managed. They in turn did well in many respects. The purchase of His Highness was a great story and put them on the top of the German breeding excitement, which sadly ended too soon. How can we not fondly think back about Doug, a kind, successful fellow breeder who did what we all love to do in the horse world? n LUDWIG CHRISTMANN, HANNOVERANER VERBAND The passing of Doug Leatherdale is a huge loss for the Hanoverian community. He was a wonderful person, who did not forget his roots, a successful businessman with very clear ideas and a great supporter of the Hanoverian breed and the sport of dressage. He was linking Hanoverian breeding in the U.S. and in Germany like nobody else, creating Leatherdale Farms in Minnesota and his stallion business together with the Meyer family in Dorum/Germany. SCHMIDT, DVM, AHS EXECUTIVE VICE-PRESIDENT & MEMBER AT LARGE It was my absolute honor to know Doug Leatherdale, his friendship, his leadership, and to experience firsthand his passion and commitment to the Hanoverian horse both in the U.S. and in Germany over the last two decades. Asking him to serve as our American Hanoverian Society President and serving on the AHS Executive Board with him for over 10 years was both incredibly rewarding and inspiring. Doug and his wife Louise shared an incredible love for one another and for the highest levels of the sport they thoroughly supported through each one of their accomplished horses, riders and trainers. From making sure each of their retired prized broodmares and competition horses had a lifelong home at their beautiful farm in Long Lake, Minn., to providing the primary funding for the University of Minnesota Leatherdale Equine Center, Doug and Louise always based their actions on the best care, welfare and well-being of the horse. Their compassion and commitment to excellence formulated the connection I had with Doug and Louise for nearly 25 years. In 2002, being beside Doug and Louise for their purchase of the magnificent, once in a lifetime stallion, His Highness (Hohenstein/Donnerhall) at the Verden Stallion Licensing was an experience I will never forget. It clearly began their quest to bring the very best and brightest young stars to the stallion station of Jens and Susanne Meyer, Hengststation Jens Meyer, in Dorum, Germany. For many years, the Leatherdales, Meyers and I attended the Hanoverian Stallion Licensing in search of the highest quality stallions in regard to pedigree, conformation, movement and temperament. I remember a Florestan/Donnerhall son as such an impressive standout and how thrilled we all were when Doug was the winning bidder, he asked me to name him. From the F and D lines, I chose his name to be First Dance. One year, the Hanoverian Licensing did not have the right stallion to add to the Meyer s and Leatherdale s German stallion lineup, and a late night road trip to the Trakehner Stallion Licensing ensued due to rumor of a superb young stallion out of a great German mare family. The spectacular Trakehner Licensing Winner exceeded our expectations and Doug so taken with the stallion and was thrilled as the winning bidder. Louise chose his name to be Herzensdieb (Heart Thief!). Another year, the spectacular Champion of the Oldenburg Licensing with exciting new bloodlines, Fairbanks, (Flemmingh/Inselfuerst) was chosen and Doug was the very happy winning bidder with his clear intention to influence and improve breeding in our Hanoverian mare population with this remarkable stallion. Now, including the very successful Intermediaire I competitor Hampton (His Highness/Rotspon) to carry on his sire s wonderful lineage and accomplishments, there have been very successful Stallion Performance Tests, many competition successes, accolades and awarded titles of distinction and most importantly, absolutely stellar offspring from these Leatherdale stallions. Prior to his passing, Doug, Louise and the Meyers decided it was now time to The purchase in 2002 of their first Hanoverian stallion, His Highness, for a record price began a new era for Doug and Louise Leatherdale. Doug and Louise celebrated the purchase with Jens Meyer (center), Barbara Schmidt, DVM and Dr. Schmidt s husband Frederick Abblett. bring their stallions closer to home and Bridlewood Farm in Union, Kentucky owned by my husband and myself, was chosen for their care and management in the U.S. Since their importation, quarantine and arrival to our farm this season, I have heard from so many sport horse breeders, all of which are very grateful to Doug and Louise for the opportunity to have these four very accomplished and very proven stallions in the U.S. and available for breeding their mares with fresh cooled semen. Doug and Louise created a legacy for highest quality in their stallions and mares in both competition and in breeding. Now, this legacy will live on in North America to an even greater extent. I know Doug is smiling with a twinkle in his eye, very pleased and proud of his horses, their offspring and their very bright futures ahead. Thank you Doug, for your wisdom, experience, insight and especially for your passion and unyielding commitment to the Hanoverian horse. You will always be in our hearts. n SPRING 2016

26 show news Allison Brock and Roosevelt Capture Emotional Win in FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 4* BY CARLY WEILMINSTER & ALLISON KAVEY, USEF NETWORK Roosevelt with Allison Brock. Allison Brock (USA) and Roosevelt (Rotspon-Lore/ Lauries Crusador xx) put on an impressive show at the March Adequan Global Dressage Festival (AGDF), Wellington, Fla., with a first place finish in the FEI Grand Prix Special CDI 4*, presented by Havensafe Farm, with a score of %. Lara Griffith (GBR) and Rubin Al Asad collected second place honors, receiving a %, while Lisa Wilcox (USA) and Galant earned third place with a %. It was pretty solid. We didn t have any mistakes and that s why I m back here doing this, because of our mistakes in the CDI 5*. I wanted to show everyone that we can count our one tempis, smiled Brock. He was perfectly good and so I feel very good about this. To come out and ride a clean test was the important thing. The weather at AGDF today saw plenty of sun, but also torrential downpours right in the middle of the FEI CDI 4* class, which caught all top three finishers at some point in their tests or warm-up. Brock is typically very cautious of the weather with Roosevelt in terms of their preparation and warm-up, but the 2002 Hanoverian stallion handled the day s adversity with ease. I was initially concerned about him getting overheated in the warm-up because it is so humid today, and then all of the sudden we were getting pelted with heavy rain. The good news is, we ve never had an indoor, so I have to ride in a lot of stuff, she explained. He has to deal with it, so that s not something that I m worried about, but more so (I was worried about) being able to hold on to my reins. I thought he was very good about the whole thing though. I d really like to thank Betsy (Juliano) again for sponsoring this class and also really thank Fritz and Claudine Kundrun because they re behind me 2,000% all of the time. I really also need to say thank you to Michael (Barisone), continued Brock. He s out there all of the time and just a constant presence, such a rock for me. For him and the Kundruns, it s nice when everything starts to come together. 27 show news Leatherdale Farms Fleur de Lis L Makes Successful CDI Debut With Vanessa Creech-Terauds Leatherdale Farms Fleur de Lis L (First Dance-EM De La Rosa/ De Niro), a 7-year-old Hanoverian mare, kicked off her international career with an impressive debut during the Week 10 CDI at the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. Ridden by Vanessa Creech- Terauds, Fleur de Lis L earned two second place finishes and the reserve championship in the Junior division at the Florida International Youth Dressage Championships. Creech- Terauds began working with Fleur just this season, and the pair s growing partnership held up against a competitive international group of youth riders. Even though I have not had much time to get to know Fleur yet, we have already started to form a bond, Creech-Terauds said. We only showed Juniors once, the weekend before, so I was extremely proud of how we came together to create a partnership! She is such a sweet mare with quite the personality. She has a great work ethic, picks up new things quickly and is very friendly. The pair have not only found success in their teamwork, but they have earned high scores throughout the Adequan Global Dressage Festival. When Creech-Terauds and Fleur went down centerline for the first time together, they earned an impressive score of percent at First Level. In their first Junior tests at the Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge II, the pair proved their talent with scores of and percent. Vanessa and Fleur de Lis L combine the best qualities of a talented young rider and talented young horse, said BY ANNAN HEPNER, PHELPS MEDIA GROUP Fleur de Lis L and Vanessa Creech-Terauds. At the Florida International Youth Dressage Championships, the duo were defeated only by the number three ranked Junior competitor in the world. They finished the weekend with scores of percent in the Junior Team Test and percent in the Junior Individual Test. I couldn t be happier with how Fleur was in both her tests, Creech- Terauds explained. She is such a great show mare and clearly knows her job in the ring. She is able to go into the ring confident and focused, and she tries very hard to do everything I ask. Traveling back and forth from her home in Caistor Centre, Ontario, the up-and-coming Canadian rider trains with her mother Diane Creech. Fleur de Lis L, bred in the U.S. by Leatherdale Farms, is by the farm s ANNAN HEPNER, PHELPS MEDIA GROUP stallion First Dance, who arrived in the U.S. this winter from Germany to stand at Bridlewood Farm in Union, Kentucky. At 7-years-old, Fleur has plenty of potential, and she has already captured a Second Level championship and a Training Level reserve championship at the U.S. Dressage Finals with Mike Suchanek in the saddle. Creech-Terauds primary goal of the year for Fleur is to qualify for the Ontario Junior team for the FEI North American Junior and Young Rider Championships, which will be hosted in Colorado in July. She also will be trying to qualify for the Ontario Young Rider team with Rob Roy, her other mount owned by Leatherdale Farms. I am so incredibly happy with how the Florida International Youth Dressage Championships turned out, and I am so excited to see what this talented mare and I will accomplish in the future! 28 news from Germany Grande-Prize 2016: Comte Celle State Stud Stallion Honoured in Verden Comte (Contendro-SPS Granulita/Granulit) was honored with the Grande-Prize. Breeder Rolf Eggerking was presented with the award during the March Verden Auction. The Grande-Prize was given to the Celle state stud stallion Comte. The Contendro/ Granulit son had already established an excellent reputation as supplier of brilliant jumpers at an early age. He was successfully shown up to the advanced show jumping level and already led the breed value estimation in recent years. His breeder Rolf Eggerking, Brinkum, was specially honored on the occasion of the Verden Auction in March. Comte descends from the damline of Gaeta and was born in East Frisia in His pedigree features the well-known Contendro, one of the most influential jumper sires in Hanover, meeting the blood of trademark stallion Grannus via dam s sire Granulit on the maternal side of his pedigree. Comte grew up at the stallion raising station Hunnesrück and completed an outstanding 300-Day Performance Test in October, With a show jumping score of points, the typey young bay stallion was second best of his age group in this discipline. In the next two years, he competed in the Final of the Hanoverian Show Jumping Championships before he celebrated first advanced level placements with Joachim Winter in He started his breeding career in Oberndorf in 2007 where he was very popular with the breeders right from the very beginning. His first progeny are started under saddle and serving numbers continue to increase. Since he entered the breed value estimation the first time, Comte always occupied one of the top places. One major reason for this success already at young age are the outstanding results his daughters have achieved at mare performance tests. He is also one of the best evaluated stallions all over Germany. The 2016 Hanoverian breed value estimation generated an outstanding jumper value of 145, his value with the integrated breed value estimation of the German FN amounts to the fantastic figure of 162 points. Comte s progeny are athletic horses with a lot of scope and super rideability. The first progeny are meanwhile competing at the advanced level. One daughter impressed in the show ring last year: Hanoverian premium candidate Coco M won the jumper division at the Herwart v. d. Decken Show. Statistics also feature 21 Verden auction horses, nine State Premium mares and two licensed stallions. Since 2009, the Grande-Prize has been awarded to Hanoverian stallions in the important age of ten to twelve, a time when first reliable information about his hereditary qualities will be available as the eldest offspring of a stallion can then be judged under saddle. The breeder of the stallion is honored with this prize. The naming is meant to honour the hereditary accomplishments of the trademark stallion Grande. n THE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN

29 American Rhineland Studbook American Rhineland Studbook Offers Exciting Opportunities for Breeders and Owners in 2016 BY HEATHER STANLEY, AMERICAN RHINELAND STUDBOOK In February 2016, the American Hanoverian Society ( AHS ) launched a new studbook in the United States, the American Rhineland Studbook. The American Rhineland Studbook ( ARS ) will be administered by the AHS as an entity separate and distinct from the Hanoverian Studbook. The birth of the ARS marks the first time that the Rhineland horse will have representation in the United States, and the new Studbook offers extremely attractive options for both breeders and owners, including reduced introductory fees, streamlined registration procedures and a combined inspection tour. FOR OWNERS OF GERMAN-PAPERED RHINELAND HORSES: For 2016, owners of breeding or competition German-registered Rhineland horses are invited to record their horses with the AHS at no cost. Owners must be current active, regular, or associate members of the AHS. Imported horses issued registration papers by the German Rhineland Society (Rheinlander Verband) must be recorded into the American Hanoverian Society s database in order to compete for year-end awards, be inspected to enter the breeding program, or have registered offspring. FOR MARE OWNERS: All Hanoverian and non-hanoverian mares that have been accepted into the American Hanoverian Main Studbook are automatically accepted into the ARS Main Studbook. Hanoverian mare owners may take advantage of this additional studbook approval if they wish to choose a stallion that is approved for Rhineland stallion but not approved for Hanoverian. To determine if the stallion you have chosen for your Hanoverian mare is on the Rhineland-approved list, please contact the Rhineland office directly. The resulting foals will be eligible for registration with the Rhineland Studbook. Fee schedule: For foals of 2016, an introductory, reduced foreign sire fee of $75 will be assessed if the Rhineland-approved stallion is not activated with the ARS this year. Mare dues for 2015 and 2016, and foal registration fees still apply. For 2016, any non-hanoverian mare previously presented for inspection to the AHS that scored an overall 6 or greater (with no subset below 5), but less than an overall 7, may be permanently entered into the Rhineland Main Studbook without being re-presented. 31 American Rhineland Studbook American Rhineland Studbook Awards Program BY KATE PALMQUIST & HEATHER STANLEY An integral part of the launch of the new American Rhineland Studbook, the 2016 American Rhineland Studbook Awards Program was developed to reward Rhineland horses and their owners competing in sport. Awards will be given for Dressage, Eventing, Hunters and Jumpers, and Sport Horse Breed Shows. Eligibility All horses either must be registered with the American Rhineland Society or hold registration papers from the German Rhineland Verband and have been recorded here with the ARS. Owners must be current members of the American Hanoverian Society, administrator of the American Rhineland Studbook. Dressage The ARS will sponsor the Rhineland All-Breeds Awards through the United States Dressage Federation. A Champion and Reserve Champion Award will be offered for Training Level through Grand Prix in the Open divisions, following USDF s rules for All-Breeds Awards as to number of shows, number of tests, number of judges, and which tests must be ridden. At the USDF Dressage National Championships, one High-Score Rhineland Award will be given, across all the Championship levels. This will be awarded based on the highest percentage earned in the Championship classes. One Champion and Reserve will be named in the Young Horse Division (USEF Four-Year Old, FEI Five-Year Old, FEI Six-Year Old) based on the highest median score in the USDF Year-End rankings. One Champion and Reserve will be named in the Materiale Division (all ages and sexes) based on the highest median score in the USDF Year-End rankings. Sport Horse Breeding Three Champions and Reserves will be named for the Dressage Sport Horse Breed Show Divisions: 1) Champion Filly (weanlings through 3-Year Olds); 2) Champion Colt (weanlings through 3-Year Olds); and 3) Mature Horse (all Mare divisions and Stallions). Eligible stallions MUST be provisionally licensed or lifetime approved and must be registered Rhineland. For the Sport Horse Breed Shows Awards, the ARS will keep track of the scores in-house (this is not done through USDF). Scores will be earned by the Rhineland-papered horses competing in recognized USDF Breed Shows, and the horses must compete in a minimum of 3 shows in the calendar year. Champions will be the horses with the highest median percentage from their age-group classes. Hunters and Jumpers One Hunter Champion and Reserve will be named from within all the divisions in which USEF gives National or Zone Hunter Year-End awards; highest number of good points to be the winner. One Jumper Champion and Reserve will be named from within all the divisions in which USEF gives National or Zone Jumper Year-End awards; highest number of good points to be the winner. Hunters and Jumpers MUST be enrolled in the AHS Awards Program in order to be eligible for year-end awards. The Performance Awards Form must be completed and submitted by September 30th of the competition year. Eventing One Eventing Champion and Reserve will be named from within all the divisions in which the USEA gives national awards. Awards will be given based on the highest number of points earned in one division across all the levels, Beginner Novice through Advanced. You MUST be enrolled in the AHS Awards Program in order to be eligible for year-end awards. The Performance Awards Form must be completed and submitted by September 30th of the competition year. The owner of any non-hanoverian warmblood mare enrolled for an AHS inspection must submit a copy of the mare s registration papers to the Central Office for pre-approval. Full details on each inspection site will be posted on AHS & ARS registrations and inspection enrollments may be completed entirely online, including payment via credit card, at the AHS website, For those preferring to register via mail, there is a printable application form available at both the AHS website and the ARS website, In addition to submitting your application to the AHS, you should contact the individual site host to arrange for stabling, handling, etc. All foal registration paperwork, with the exception of the markings page, may be submitted online, including digital foal photographs. Members are no longer required to submit original mare registration papers to the AHS office. Photocopies will suffice. For those mares that pass inspection and/or the MPT, stickers, stamped and signed by the AHS, will be sent with instructions for the owner to affix onto the original papers. CAROLE MACDONALD Hanoverian breeders and AHS members were again well represented among those recognized by the Great American Insurance Group/USDF Breeders Championship Series in their year-end results. Breeders must have had two or more horses compete in series final competitions in 2015, with those horses retaining official breed or performance registry paperwork on file with USDF. In 2015, AHS member Rachel Ehrlich, Greengate Farms, emerged as the Top Breeder with the highest average score (78.591%) with a score range of %. Of the four USDFBCS finalists bred by Rachel, Davina ggf (Dancier-SPS Rendezvous ggf/rascalino) was the highest scoring horse. Davina ggf earned the excellent score of 80.85% in the New England Series Current Year Foal Championship for which the filly was also awarded Grand Champion Current Year Foal for the series. Other finalists bred by Rachel include Grand Champion USDF Finals Colt DonarShaun ggf (Donarweiss ggf-em Rhapsody ggf/ Rascalino) and Schanelle ggf (Sternlicht ggf-em Shalimar ggf/ Schroeder). Rachel was ranked second in the Top Breeders of the 2015 U.S. Dressage Finals participants. Her two horses, Sternlicht Hilltop ggf (reg. Sternlicht ggf) (Soliman de Hus-EM Rhapsody/ Rascalino) and Hallah ggf (Hotline- Raphaella/Rotspon) earned the average score of % with a score range of %. 37 AHS young breeders news Young Breeders Club 2nd Annual Summer Camp! BY DORIE VLATTEN-SCHMITZ In 2015, the first AHS Young Breeders Club summer camp was held at Hawk Hollow in Erieville, N.Y. The camp was such a success that it will again be held this year! The summer camp location is, again, Hawk Hollow Farm. The scenic breeding farm, located a short distance off of Erieville Road on Damon Road, is just outside of the picturesque village of Cazenovia, N.Y. Participants will arrive July 2nd, with the first official day of camp set to start on the July 3rd. The camp will run through July 7th. The Hanoverian and Rhinelander Inspection at Hawk Hollow Farm is on July 6th. The Young Breeders will help prepare and have the opportunity to participate on inspection day. Enrollment forms and guidelines will soon be available on the new AHS Young Breeders Club website. Hawk Hollow farm generously allows the club members to stay at the farm. Hotel arrangements for adult volunteers will be available. Participants will continue their education in handling techniques for mares and foals as well as judging conformation and free jumping. A portion of each day will be dedicated to learning how to prepare for an upcoming inspection and what it takes to run one. The campers will then have an opportunity to volunteer at the AHS/ Rhinelander inspection taking place July 6th at Hawk Hollow Farm. The inspection camp will culminate with an AHS Young Breeders Competition. Each participant will compete in handling, judging conformation, free jumping, and have a theory test similar to the competition that will take place at the World Championships. The Young Breeders Program is a vital part of our Society s future. We are sharing our love of the breed and also preparing our future breeders. Every effort is being made to make this a cost-friendly event. In that vein, we are looking for sponsors who would like to make contributions. 38 AHS young breeders news Young Breeders Annual Meeting Report BY THOMAS RÜCKERT, AHS YOUNG BREEDERS CLUB MEMBER The Young Breeders and Handlers of the American Hanoverian Society fled the ice and snow of the north, and the heat of the south-west to gather for a meeting and training session in Palm Beach, Florida, site of the association s Annual Conference. We were included in meetings that covered the final products of generations of breeding, finances of the breeding business, how global economics affect the industry, and learned the importance of producing a champion show horse in the United States for professional and amateur competitors. Plumb Lines of the Horse, Judging Correctness in Conformation was the first evening s activity. Under the guidance of Kristi Wysoki we learned these lines represent the correctness of proportion of equids and how conformation affects movement and the horse s ability to excel in specific equestrian sports. As a team, we honed our skills, putting our new found knowledge into practice by labelling the plumb lines on large horse posters, using strings and rulers. The Core Values for Jumping was the next morning s presentation given by DiAnn Langer and Judy Hedreen. As young breeders we need to know what conformation and temperament traits to breed for and to develop an understanding of the evolution of the ideal Hanoverian appearance and performance. A study of the leading bloodlines in the modern Hanoverian gave an insight to the group for what to look for in the show ring. To experience quality free jumping first hand, the Young Breeders were invited to watch free jumping at Marabet Farm owned and managed by Maggie Fullington. After a delicious catered lunch the Young Breeders were taught to set up a free jump chute. The team was accompanied by DiAnn Langer and Judy Hedreen who gave us insight into what will be expected of us during our handling competitions. The Young Breeders group members and friends were wowed by the Global Dressage Grand Prix Freestyles Under the Stars with first hand judging commentary by Kristi Wysoki. Our team also had the opportunity to spectate at the Global Dressage and Winter Equestrian Festival. The American Hanoverian Society s awards banquet was an exciting culmination to an amazing learning experience for our group. We were formally introduced to the committee and to the many AHS members in attendance. We would like to thank everyone who gave us such a warm welcome and to those individuals who generously made substantial contributions to support our team. Christine Kropf is welcoming the Young Breeders and Handlers back to Hawk Hallow Farm this July where we will continue our education. Being able to accurately judge a Hanoverian takes years of training. As members of the Young Breeders Team we study and work diligently to master as much information during our club meetings as possible. For many of us, attending meetings and conferences introduces us to our future clients. 39 THE 2016 AHS ANNUAL MEETING West Palm Beach, Florida Hanoverian enthusiasts from across the United States and Canada assembled in sunny West Palm Beach, Fla., January 29-31, for the association s annual meeting. Expertly organized by AHS Board Member Anne Sparks of Albuquerque, N.M., the meeting offered three full days of educational seminars, comprehensive updates on the work of the society through its various committees, the annual awards banquet and silent auction, and a fascinating and informative report from the Hanoverian Verband. For many attendees this meeting provided a welcome brief respite from the rigors of winter, and the highlights may well have been the Friday and Saturday visits to the nearby Wellington equine complex which offered world class competition in both dressage and jumping. But maybe we re getting ahead of ourselves. The annual meeting does not just happen it takes months of dedicated planning by a team of individuals who make up the Annual Meeting Committee. This year we especially need to thank Chairperson Anne Sparks, and her fellow committee members Don and Dee Kapper, Meredith Michelfelder, and Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz, who were ably assisted by the central office s Sandy Clevenger. Working behind the scenes for many months this group put together an entertaining three days and we were rewarded with an attendance of some 120 Hanoverian owners and breeders from every corner of the country. Using her extensive contacts in the south Florida horse community, Anne lined up a stellar field of speakers and panelists, including Christine Traurig, one of the most esteemed and sought after trainers and clinicians in the United States; Nicole Thunger, a Bereiter from Germany who has presented horses up to the FEI levels and has trained to Grand Prix; and Kristi Wysocki and Jan Ebeling, both nationally known trainers, competitors, and clinicians. The AHS Board of Directors met in session on the Friday; this business meeting was conducted with great efficiency by President Edgar Schutte thus enabling the Board to attend the first educational seminar From Foal to Five The Ins and Outs of Young Horse Development, with speakers Christine Traurig, Kristi Wysocki and Nicole Thungen. Late afternoon the membership departed for an hors d oeuvres reception at Global Dressage where we witnessed the Wellington Classic Grand Sunshine Challenge. In a great touch, Anne Sparks arranged for Kristi Wysocki to provide a running commentary for the group which made the evening extra special. This competition featured Anne s own homebred Elite Stallion Pikko del Cerro HU (Pik L-Rohweena/Rohdiamant), who has been one of the leading FEI horses in the country for the past few years. This proved to be the last outing for Pikko del Cerro HU and his regular rider Lisa Willcox who has partnered him in no less than 67 competitions since 2010, including 27 first place finishes! Pikko s retirement due to injury was announced shortly thereafter and he is now safely ensconced as a stallion at Hilltop Farm in Maryland. So ended a full but very fulfilling day! Saturday s activities opened with an extremely informative session entitled What to look for in a Young Dressage Horse from the Trainer s and Rider s Perspective, moderated by Christine Traurig and Jan Ebeling. 40 AHS ANNUAL MEETING JANUARY 2016 WEST PALM BEACH, FLA. assemble on the provided transportation to make our way back to the Wellington show grounds for free time at either Global Dressage or the various jumping competitions at the Winter Equestrian Festival. Both venues offer world class equine-related shopping opportunities and I daresay that many credit cards were maxxed out at day s end! The Saturday evening featured the annual awards banquet where the society recognizes year-end winners in dressage, eventing, hunters and jumpers, and sport horse breeding. The event was preceded by a one-hour welcome reception with hors d oeuvres and complimentary beer and wine selections. As in prior years AHS Awards Chair Cathy Tucker Slaterbeck organized the awards ceremony without a hitch. Although the AHS is primarily a breed society, riders and competitors make up a significant part of the membership and it was great to have so many winners in attendance to receive their awards in person. There is little doubt that the AHS offers the most comprehensive awards program of any breed society in the United States and each year we are pleased to recognize the competitors who represent the Hanoverian breed with such distinction. Bidding was fast and furious during the silent auction, organized once again by Meredith Michelfelder of Moulton, Ala. Meredith is a lead member of the AHS Fundraising Committee and, quite frankly, she s irreplaceable. In recognition of her many contributions to the society, including producing and printing the full color meeting program (at her own expense, I might add), Edgar Schutte awarded Meredith the President s Volunteer of the Year Award. This was richly deserved and Meredith s work on behalf of AHS is greatly appreciated. During the Friday and Saturday proceedings, the 18 members of the AHS Young Breeders Team were busy with their own activities [see article by Thomas Rückert on page 36]. The group was however present for the awards banquet and these young individuals were introduced to the membership individually by Dorie Vlatten-Schmitz. Special mention must be made of Dorie who has overseen this program from inception to fruition; these young people are the future of our society. Their presence gave the entire meeting real optimism and enthusiasm. The AHS will be fielding a team of Young Breeders who will participate in the WBFSH s international competition that will be held in Calgary, Alberta, in Towards the close of the evening an informal fund raiser was held for the group and a significant sum was raised. We thank everyone who donated and wish our Young Breeders the very best of luck in We are very proud of you! The evening just flew by and on the Sunday morning the survivors (quite a lot of them actually) assembled for Dr. Ludwig Christmann s report from Germany. A real favorite with the membership, Dr. Christmann has made many visits to the United States over the years for our inspections and annual meetings. He knows that he is among friends and the knowledge that he imparts is simply invaluable. Prior to the general membership meeting, the AHS held an informative and lively session on The American Rhineland Studbook, a new option for warmblood breeders in the United States. The ARS is now up and running and is generating much interest from existing AHS members and also from new members who wish to avail themselves of this new studbook which will operate under the aegis of the American Hanoverian Society. The ARS Committee members, namely Natalie DiBerardinis, Doug Langer, Kate Palmquist, Edgar Schutte, Rick Toering, Cathy Tucker- Slaterbeck, and Meg Williams have accomplished a remarkable feat in getting this studbook off the ground in just a matter of weeks. Congratulations to all! And so ended three enjoyable and memorable days in Florida. The good news is that the Board voted that the annual meeting would return to West Palm Beach for 2017 and the dates have been set for January Make a note in your diary to attend this event you won t be sorry! In closing, it s apparent from this report that the AHS is very much a volunteer-driven organization and it would be remiss not to note the great work done throughout the year by the Board and the 43 members who comprise AHS s 17 committees. These trophies include the Bari Von Buedingen Award (Dressage at Devon Highest Placing Award), The Hartwig Prize Perpetual Trophy, the Engler-Friedlaender Award, the Benchmark Farm Perpetual Award, the Bari Von Buedingen Memorial Trophy, the AHS FEI and USDF Four-, Five- and Six-Year-Old Young Horse Year-End Winners and the AHS Materiale Awards. This information and available photos of all winners are also featured on the AHS website at DRESSAGE AT DEVON PERPETUAL ALSO NAMED THE BARI VON BUEDINGEN AWARD Each year during the last week of September, breeders large and small from all corners of North America descend upon Devon s show grounds for three days of exciting and intense breed competition. In 1990, Priscilla Hanford, then AHS vice president, generously commissioned a beautiful bronze of a Hanoverian mare accompanied by an equally exquisite foal to be presented as a perpetual trophy at Devon. This unique work of art created by artist Karin Natsch Leary is entitled American Hanoverians and was first awarded in The Dressage at Devon Highest Placing Award, also named the Bari Von Buedingen Award, is awarded to the highest placing eligible Hanoverian horse in the open breed classes. For the fourth year in a row a horse bred by Maryanna Haymon has won this prestigious award. The 2015 winner is Danae MF (Doctor Wendell MF-EM Rising Star/Rotspon). MARYANNA HAYMON Danae MF achieved the high score of 82.5 in the Yearling Fillies class during the 2015 Dressage at Devon breed show. She then went on to be named Reserve Champion Filly and Champion Young Horse and a well-deserved trip to the Grand Championship ring where she was awarded Reserve Grand Champion for Marydell Farm. Danae MF was handled expertly by King Santacruz of Wellington, Fla., to the victory. Danae MF continues her successes! In 2014, as a weanling, she was the recipient of the USDF Awards Traveling Trot Perpetual Trophy for the highest scoring Dressage Sport DANAE MF (Doctor Wendell MF-EM Rising Star/Rotspon) Horse In-Hand of all age groups and both genders. Her median score was She continues to be a proud representative of Doctor Wendell MF s first foal crop! The lovely filly is owned and bred by Maryanna Haymon, N.C. The sponsors of this perpetual trophy have determined that the award should be limited to 3- and 4-yearold AHS registered mares, conceived and foaled in either the United States or Canada. The winner is determined by combining each mare s scores from her studbook inspection and Mare Performance Test, with mares that are three years of age having a.4 point added to the final total. In 2015 Maple Run Farm s homebred Whitney MRF was presented for her studbook inspection and Mare Performance Test. She wowed the inspectors and spectators with not only her beautiful type, but also her talent in jumping, and her three very EMC WHITNEY MRF (Wolkenstein II-EM Dacia MRF/Diamond Hit) is the recipient of the 2015 Hartwig Prize as well as the Engler-Friedlaender Memorial Trophy. Whitney MRF is by Wolkenstein II out of EM Dacia (Diamond Hit/Rohdiamant/ Weltmeyer). With an inspection score of 7.83 which included a 9 on her walk, and a performance test score of 8.41, threeyear-old Whitney MRF was the recipient of both the Hartwig Prize, which is awarded to the young mare (only AHS registered 3- or 4-year-olds are eligible) that has the highest combined score from her studbook inspection and Mare Performance Test, and the Engler-Friedlaender Memorial Trophy, which is awarded to the highest Mare Performance Test during that year s inspection tour. Whitney is a second generation representative of our farm s foundation mare EM Revlon (Rohdiamant/ Weltmeyer/Roncalli xx) whom we purchased as a weanling 15 years ago when we started our breeding program. She is the first of the second generation to be of age to do the performance test. When deciding on a stallion to breed to Dacia for her first foal we knew we wanted to consolidate her type, and get more power to the hind leg. Dacia has THE AMERICAN HANOVERIAN

55 good use of her hind leg and three very good gaits with suppleness through her body. The combination of Wolkenstein II with Dacia achieved those goals. What more would we have liked? Perhaps she could use more length of leg and a bit longer neck; however, Whitney has the power in the gaits, the suppleness, the uphill carriage and most importantly the mind that is needed for a top FEI horse. As a foal Whitney was the top foal at her inspection and even then impressed the judges with the use and power of her hind leg. She showed her natural uphill carriage and great rhythm even at a few months of age. Incredibly athletic and sensitive in a good way, it was going to be interesting to see how Whitney was under saddle. She showed us all with her incredible rideability! Whitney was sharp as a tack and quick to learn. Her sensitivity was grounded and showed in her responsiveness to light aids, and a desire to please. At her Mare Performance Test she walked into the ring and got to work like a seasoned show horse, showing never a spooky moment. We were so proud of her, as well as incredibly impressed by this young mare who had never been out before. Whitney was backed and performance tested by Sylvia Geyer who has been starting all our youngsters that we still own and has done a fantastic job bringing them along. 56 to start youngsters correctly so they enjoy their work and trust their rider, and Sylvia instills that trust, and keeps their mind active. Sylvia also does free jumping once a week, which gives them something fun and different to do. That free jumping work showed at the inspection when this little dressage mare scored an 8.5 for technique and 8 for ability. Although my husband would have loved to have kept Whitney and breed her, I really wanted her to have a performance career. I already have my time filled with two other mares of ours and I really wanted Whitney to go to a professional home. Whitney now has a new home with Tori Polonitza who previously purchased another young mare, EMC Seraphina MRF, from us a few years ago. Tori has brought EMC Seraphina MRF along beautifully and is very successfully competing her at PSG this year. Tori just recently took EMC Whitney to her first recognized dressage show in Florida and won the Training Level class with a 75.87%. Tori said she was absolutely wonderful! We are so proud of both of them. This is the second year in a row that Maple Run Farm LLC has had the thrill of having one of their mares receive both these awards. In 2014, EMC Stiletto MRF (Sir Donnerhall/ Bordeaux/Weltmeyer) was the recipient. I now have the privilege of riding and showing Stiletto along with our EMC Fergie MRF, a Fidertanz mare who is out of Whitney s granddam. Score: 8.41 In July of 1998, the American Hanoverian Society saw the passing of two of its most prominent members in former President Hermann Friedlaender and long-time board member Dr. Reto Engler. Each in his own way served the Society with distinction for many years. That fall, John and Tracy Weyl, owners of Maplewood Farm in Lexington, Ky., approached the AHS with a generous offer to memorialize Mr. Friedlaender and Dr. Engler through the creation and donation to the Society of a unique perpetual trophy. Created by world-renowned artist Karen Kasper, the Engler-Friedlaender Memorial Trophy is a one-of-a-kind work of art. Created in relief bronze, it features a montage of a mare going through her inspection and Mare Performance Test. At the specific request of Mr. and Mrs. Weyl, the trophy is awarded each year to the Hanoverian mare that achieves the highest Mare Performance Test score during the annual inspections. 58 2015 Award for Special Mares BARI VON BUEDINGEN MEMORIAL TROPHY [ BY DENNIS MOORE] WIKTORIA FH (Wolkentanz II-EM Del Amika/ Donnerhall) Owner/Breeder: Eliza Rutherford, Vt. Inspection Score: 8.16 The Bari von Buedingen Memorial Trophy was the first of the American Hanoverian Society s perpetual trophies. It was donated to the AHS in the early 1990 s in memory of noted breeder Bari von Buedingen, who, together with her husband Dr. Richard von Buedingen, developed their Graf Bae Farm broodmare band into one of the best in the United States. This award is given to the highest scoring Hanoverian mare seen during the American Hanoverian Society s annual inspection tour. The Bari von Buedingen Memorial Trophy was inaugurated in 1994 to recognize the Hanoverian mare that receives the highest score for her studbook inspection during the AHS s annual inspection tour. The 2015 winner is Wiktoria FH, bred and owned by Eliza Rutherford of Foxwood Hanoverians in Charlotte, Vt. The mare s studbook inspection scores would be the envy of any Hanoverian breeder, encompassing a series of 8 s for conformation, walk, and overall impression and development, not to mention nines for neck, typiness and impulsion and elasticity, for an overall whopping 8.16! This final score was richly deserved by this very beautiful 2010, black, 16.3-hand mare, and by her committed owner/breeder. Wiktoria is the thirty-first recipient of this prestigious award (in some years there were tied winners); she certainly belongs in such exalted company. Eliza is a long-time and very successful breeder of Hanoverian horses. She started breeding in 1999 and in 2004 she leased, then ultimately bought, Wiktoria s dam, EM Del Amika (Donnerhall-Why Not/Westwall/Darling/ Argentan). The dam of our trophy winner deserves particular mention here because she is a truly great mare who undoubtedly made a huge contribution to the success of her daughter Wiktoria. In addition to being a direct daughter of Donnerhall, EM Del Amika also carries well-estab-4 CAROLE MACDONALD WIKTORIA FH (Wolkentanz II-EM Del Amika/Donnerhall) is the 2015 recipient of the Bari Von Buedingen Memorial Trophy as the highest scoring mare on the 2015 inspection tour. Del Amika was bought as a foal in Germany and imported by Mid-Atlantic Hanoverian Breeder Laura Whitford. Del Amika has produced 13 outstanding offspring, highlights of which include: Rubinhall, a 2003 colt by Rotspon who was inspection Champion Colt and fourth place at the Colt and Stallion Championship at Devon in 2005; Zonnerhall, a 2004 colt by Rousseau who was First Premium at his KWPN inspection, secured a third place finish in the DG Bar Cup for 3-year-olds and is now competing at PSG/I1 in Florida; Sovereign Hit, a 2005 colt by Sandro Hit who is a licensed RPSI and Canadian Warmblood sire and is now competing at PSG/I1 at the CDI level; Royal Corazon, a 2007 filly by Royal Prince who was Champion Mare at her AHS inspection with a 7.83, second highest scoring mare on the 2010 inspection tour; Watch Me Too, a 2009 colt by Welfenkonig II who scored 8.32 in his FEI 5-year-old test, was the top 5-year-old for the New England Dressage Association, and competed in the U.S. Dressage Finals as a 6-year-old; Rotdiamant FH, a 2013 colt by Romanov Blue Hors who was Champion Colt at his AHS inspection; and a 2015 filly by Romanov Blue Hors who was Champion Filly at her AHS inspection. Although EM Del Amika is open for 2016, Eliza is planning on doing an embryo transfer for The mare is being bred to the young dressage stallions Finest (Furstenball/Wie Weltmeyer/Prince Thatch xx) and Belantis (Benetton Dream/Expo se/ Sandro Hit). Eliza reports that Del Amika reliably produces refined, uphill, forward-thinking offspring who have correct and active hindquarters and who possess great rideability and temperaments. When Eliza chooses a stallion for Del Amika, she looks for some modest improvement to the mare s neck set and shoulder freedom. She obviously found it in the cross that produced Wiktoria. Eliza reports that Del Amika sells her own foals; Eliza doesn t need to do much advertising for her offspring. It is frequently said breed the best to the best, and Eliza has followed that advice to produce Wiktoria, not only with her wonderful mare, Del Amika, but also with the stallion. Wiktoria is a daughter of Wolkentanz II, the important and prolific son of Weltmeyer who stood in North America that we sadly lost this past year. Breeding to Wolkentanz II (Weltmeyer/Ludendorff/Aristides/ Furioso II) promised conformation and movement success because his Hanoverian breeding values for type and riding horse qualities were above 150 points, i.e., in the top 2% of the scores. In 2007, the Hanoverian Verband ranked Wolkentanz II second highest of all breeding stallions in these categories. In fact, this was Eliza s second of three breedings of EM Del Amika to Wolkentanz II. The first was, according to Eliza, perhaps the best of the three but was unfortunately lost after a long battle with an umbilical infection. In addition to the foals by Wolkentanz II, Eliza has also successfully crossed the dam twice more to the W-line, producing two lovely foals by Welfenkonig II (Wolkenstein II/Matcho AA/Garibaldi II), owned by Talley Ruhle, Triad Farm in Riegelsville, Penn. Eliza had attended Welfenkonig II s licensing in Germany, loved him, and was particularly impressed by his elasticity. Eliza currently is competing one of those talented youngsters, Watch Me Too, in dressage. Those of us who love Hanoverian horses should get to know the farm that produced Wiktoria, Foxwood Hanoverians, As described above, it is not only a very successful Hanoverian breeding farm, but it also is a training center and boarding operation. There are approximately 50 horses on 100 acres at Foxwood Hanoverians, including Eliza s eight Hanoverian broodmares. Eliza typically produces four foals per year. In addition to attending AHS inspections, Eliza takes her young horses to breed shows, starts them under saddle and competes the few she decides not to sell. Although Eliza plans to keep Wiktoria as an eventual replacement for Del Amika, she is riding and will compete our trophy winner, who is doing First Level dressage. Eliza also plans to prepare Wiktoria for her Mare Performance Test in According to Eliza, Wiktoria has been started slowly under saddle because she physically looks a year younger than she is and also because she suffered an injury as a four-yearold. Eliza reports that Wiktoria is a blast to ride and has an amazing canter. Jumping Score: 8.75 (8.5/9) CO-CHAMPION EMC FRANCEZKA BPF (Fabuleux-Rexona/Rubinstein I) Owner: Jennifer Wiggins Breeder: Sean Brennan, Texas Jumping Score: 8.75 (8.5/9) The Benchmark Farm Award goes to the mare(s) each year that score the highest combined jumping score in their Mare Performance Test. This can be achieved by a Hanoverian or a Non-Hanoverian mare; and if there are mares that score equally, the award can be won by several mares. This award was donated anonymously about 10 years ago and is named for the farm owned by the sculptor, Phyllis Hamilton. The Perpetual Trophy is a lovely etched glass sculpture of a mare jumping a fence and Phyllis was chosen to design and sculpt this lovely trophy for the AHS. This sculpture is kept at the AHS central office in Lexington, Kentucky, and each year s winner s name is added on an engraved plaque to the base of the piece. The winner receives a keeper plaque and a beautiful ribbon. EMC ANNA-KARINA (Antibes-Raphaea/Rienzi) was in the top ten for her MPT score nationwide with the score of Her very good jumping score of 8.75 (8.5/9), which the judges praised as delightful to watch, tied her for the highest nationally in 2015 making her a co-winner of the Benchmark Farm Perpetual Award. She is owned by Fancesca Brittain and was bred by Marefield Meadows, Va. The Benchmark Farm Trophy was donated to the AHS to honor the mare(s) that scores the highest average jumping score in their Mare Performance Test each year. The trophy itself resides in the AHS office in Kentucky and is a beautiful glass sculpture of a mare jumping a fence. Some years there is one winner and sometime more than one. This year there were two mares who achieved 4 EMC FRANCEZKA BPF (Fabuleux-Rexona/Rubinstein I) earned the good score of 7.41 in her MPT. She was praised for her good preparation in the jump chute and her high score of 8.75 (8.5/9) and was the MPT Champion of the Bona B inspection. 62 the same overall score of 8.75 points. Interestingly enough they both achieved the same sub-scores: an 8.5 for their jumping technique and a 9.0 for their ability. The technique score reflects how well the mare uses her body over the fences; use of the knees and shoulders, the bascule, and ever so important in a jumper, the hind legs! The ability score reflects what the judges think of the mare s potential to jump high and wide fences; this year both were very well thought of talent wise, by the judges. Let s meet both of these mares. EMC FRANCEZKA BPF This mare, now a 7-year-old (born 2009), by Fabuleux (Fabriano/ Augustinus xx/absatz) out of Rexona, by Rubinstein I, was bred in Texas by Sean Brennan. She is now owned by Jennifer Wiggins of Longview, Texas, who has known this mare from the time she was born in fact she foaled her out! Berry Porter and Sean Brennan are business partners in the hunter/jumper training business at Brookside Pine Farm and they own Rexona. Berry is Jennifer s trainer, and Jennifer had ridden Rexona when she was younger. Two of Rexona s other foals, have done very well in hunter showing; one, called Prix Madonnah (registered name, Dark Chocolat, by Davignport), has been an AHS Year End winner in the Large Junior Hunter division; and another, a full brother to Francezka BPF, shown as Sneeky Pete (registered name Forte BPF) has shown successfully in Junior Hunters, Performance Working Hunters, and International Hunter Derbies. When Rexona was close to foaling, the partners sent the mare to Jennifer to foal out and so the resulting foal could grow up in a group of babies at her farm. Francezka known as SJ --grew up on Jennifer s farm and when she was yearling, Jennifer decided that she wanted to own her. Sean s daughter was riding a young Thoroughbred gelding that Jennifer owned, so she and Sean struck a deal where she got SJ and Sean s daughter got the gelding. EMC FRANCEZKA BPF (Fabuleux-Rexona/Rubinstein I) Jennifer was looking into the future when she bought Francezka in her yearling year not only as a potential show hunter for herself, but also as a future broodmare. When the filly was four years old, Jennifer sent her to Berry Porter for training for a year and a half. Berry also showed SJ lightly in her 4- and 5-year-old years in some hunter classes. Then Jennifer began setting up and building a new farm in 2015, so the mare got some time off while that was going on. Later in the summer, Jennifer decided that, since she was taking another mare and foal to the AHS inspection at Bona B Ranch near Dallas/Ft Worth, perhaps she should get Francezka inspected and performance tested at the same time. Berry offered to ride the mare in her testing, since he had done most of her training and showing the year before, and offered to help Jennifer with the other horses as well. He was willing to drive four hours for this since he was part of SJ s original family and he too wanted to see her succeed. On the day of the inspection, they knew that SJ was well prepared for the free jumping, but they were all very pleased when she was so eager and in good form at the bigger fences in the jump chute. At the end she had jumped 4 6 quite easily! Her owner, rider, and the judges could tell she had plenty of talent for jumping! With this big score in her jumping and her other scores for gaits and rideability, she ended up with an overall score of 7.41 for her MPT which makes her an Elite Mare Candidate. Jennifer is planning on breeding SJ this year to finalize her Elite Mare requirements. She is also looking forward to riding the mare in competition again perhaps waiting until after her foal arrives. Jennifer appreciates the rideability of both the mare s father and grandfather Fabuleux and Rubinstein I and noted that Fabuleux s sire, Fabriano, had won the jumping portion of his 100-Day Testing, so there is the talent for jumping in her pedigree! Jennifer has known Francezka BPF since she was born, owned her since she was a yearling, and truly appreciates her talent and versatility. She s almost finalized choosing a stallion to breed to this special mare, and is looking forward to having the foal and then continuing to ride and show the mare. We wish her much success in both endeavors! EMC ANNA-KARINA EMC Anna-Karina (Antibes-Raphaea/ Rienzi/Gigant) who was born in 2008, also achieved the same high scores in the jumping portion of the Mare Performance Test. 63 Hilton Farm in Orange, Virginia at the age of seven. Anna-Karina was bred by Marefield Meadows Farm of Warrenton, Virginia. Marefield Meadows owns Rienzi (Raphael/Bolero) and had decided to breed one of their young mares by him to Antibes (Atatuerk/Freiherr) who is owned by Hilton Farm. Both stallions stand at Hilton Farm in Somerset, Va., owned by Otto Fuchs, and both have proved to be quite versatile, producing both dressage horses and show hunters. In September 2014, Tommy Doyle saw Anna-Karina training at a farm in Charlottesville and immediately knew that this was the horse for his friend, Franceska Brittain to buy! Frankie went to see the mare and did buy her. Frankie grew up in Hawaii so she nicknamed Anna-Karina Hula and brought her home. She now keeps Hula with Kiki Osborne in Charlottesville who trains and rides in both the show hunters and eventing. At first, Frankie and Hula worked on dressage, but they soon decided that the mare really wants to jump, so Kiki has been training her for a show hunter career and has been showing her in some hunter/ jumper schooling shows this winter. Frankie goes and takes lessons on her mare several times a week and also hacks her out. Hula is very good about going out by herself or in a group. Since Kiki herself seriously competes in eventing, they are planning to have a young hunter expert in Virginia, Jackson Schurtz, show Anna- Karina this year as she gets her start in the licensed shows. Eventually Frankie hopes to show her some herself in the hunters, but is wisely having the mare get experience with the professionals first. Frankie decided in the spring of 2015 that she should have Anna-Karina inspected and performance tested, so she sent the mare to her friend, Tommy Doyle and his wife Sarah, to prepare her. Both of the Doyles have prepared mares for the MPT before and Sarah rode her both in preparation and in the testing; Tommy practiced the free jumping with her and handled her in EMC ANNA-KARINA (Antibes-Raphaea/Rienzi) hand. The AHS inspection at Hilton Farm is the closest site for all of them, and is a very well run inspection, so that is where they went. Very much like Francezka BPF, Anna- Karina quickly impressed the judges with her desire to jump in good form and with her eagerness, talent, and bravery in the jump chute. Hula jumped to 4 6 eagerly and clearly showed that she has talent for the higher, wider fences! Her jumping earned 8.5 for technique and 9.0 for ability. With her gaits scores and rideability score she received an overall 7.47 to become an Elite Mare Candidate. At first, Frankie didn t realize how well her mare had done nationally in the free jumping portion of the MPT, and didn t understand what an honor winning the Benchmark Farm Prize is. She is now very proud of her mare for showing such talent for jumping! Frankie is very happy with her young mare and is looking forward to watching her gain experience in showing with the professionals and then getting to show Hula herself. She is the first to say that Tommy Doyle was right EMC Anna-Karina was THE horse for her to buy! 65 2015 AHS FEI AND USEF 4-,5-,&6-YEAR-OLD YOUNG HORSE YEAR-END WINNERS SPONSORED BY SANDPIPER FARM, LLC This award was originally conceived in 2006 by Maurine (Mo) and Jim Swanson of Rolling Stone Farm in Slatington, Pa., as a new yearend award for American Hanoverian Society breeders and owners. The Swansons commissioned a beautiful painting that hangs in the AHS office in Lexington, Ky. AHS Website Director Sandra Werkheiser continued the sponsorship through 2013 at which time the AHS assumed responsibility. The 2015 awards were generously sponsored by Gina Leslie, Sandpiper Farm, LLC. Each year, the names of the winners are added on small brass plates around the frame and winners receive keepsake trophies with a photo of the painting at the annual meeting banquet. To 2015, SmartPak Equine announced they would sponsor Reserve Champion awards for all of our divisions that have a second placed horse. Therefore, we will be honoring the Reserve Champions in these three awards divisions also. To be eligible for these awards, the horses must be in the AHS Registry (transferred in the case of German-papered horses) and the owner must be a current year member of the AHS (Active, Associate, Junior). 72 BLUE MOON STUDIOS MARTINI B (Metternich-SPS Lady White/Lungau) We had to say goodbye to Martini in January after he sustained a catastrophic stifle injury. Martini was that horse for me who will forever define me as a rider. I bought him in Florida in 2013 in hopes that he could help me earn my medals. I had never shown above Third Level when I bought him. He did that and more. We sailed through both the Bronze and Silver medals in two short years and he carried me through my first ever FEI tests all the way through I-1. He wasn t always the easiest horse to show but he always caught everyone s attention with his beautiful way of moving. He carried me to many high point awards at every venue from our local shows to Del Mar Nationals and finally in 2015 to Champion Adult Amateur Prix St. Georges Horse for AHS. 87 2015 AHS Sport Horse Breeding Winners CAROLE MACDONALD For the Sport Horse Breed Shows Awards, records are kept of the points earned by the Hanoverians competing in the USDF Breed Shows and reward the highest scoring young horses both fillies and colts, the highest scoring mature mares, and the highest scoring stallion (AHS licensed). 93 AMERICAN HANOVERIAN SOCIETY 2016 services directory A practical resource and network between places and persons that can properly breed, prepare and train warmblood horses provided to the AHS membership by the American Hanoverian Society and Hannoveraner Verband. As first announced in the 2008 spring issue of The American Hanoverian magazine, the AHS and the Hannoveraner Verband (HV) embarked upon a joint enterprise, the Hanoverian Training Identification program, to bring long term benefits to Hanoverian breeders, owners and competitors in the United States and Canada. The broad scope of this program has enabled the society to generate the AHS Services Directory, a comprehensive compendium of sport horse services in North America. It is widely recognized that there is a need in the United States for the services of skilled professionals in a variety of areas, including foaling, mare breeding/teasing, stallion collection, raising, preparing, training and marketing young horses for breed inspections, performance tests, and sport. We know that there are many individuals and facilities qualified in the 15 categories that have been identified to date, but in a country that is continental in scope, it is easier said than done for an individual to locate the specific help that he or she may require. For example, where should AHS members turn to obtain assistance in having a stallion prepared for Hanoverian licensing? Where can an AHS member find an experienced person in his or her state to properly prepare a mare for free jumping? Now that I have a newly approved stallion, where can I send him in my area for collection? With this in mind, the AHS and HV intend that the AHS Services Directory will serve as a practical resource and network between places and persons that can properly breed, prepare and train warmblood horses. A current listing for the AHS Services Directory is maintained on the society s website at along with forms and checklist materials for those interested in submitting new applications for the program.
