5 Life Member Citations Neil Dalziel Neil Douglas Dalziel gained his Bronze Medallion on 4 December 1960 at Palm Beach [Queensland] and transferred his membership to Maroochydore on 16 October Neil was awarded Long Service Membership in season. From his initial involvement with the Club Neil was involved with the Clubs patrols and in particular the Clubs IRB s. He took on the role of the IRB Vice Captain and held that position from 1981 to 1984 and again from 1985 to During the season he was the IRB Captain. Neil was the mainstay of the IRB section in his early years with the Club until the 90 s. Competitively, Neil in his early years was heavily involved with IRB racing and was the coach of the Team that won the State IRB overall Championships in the season. He was the driver of choice for the TV cameramen who gave such great coverage during the Just Jeans Carnivals. In 1981/82 Neil was a member of the Most Efficient Patrol that was awarded the Stretton Memorial Trophy. In he was the Patrol Captain of the Most Efficient Patrol and again was awarded the Stretton Memorial Trophy. In the season Neil was awarded the Spider Newing Patrol Trophy as the Best Senior Patrolling Person. Neil was a member of Club Council , , seasons. In the 90 s he was recruited into various Masters Boat crews where he won 5 Branch, 4 State and 1 Australian Championships. They also won 5 Branch, 2 State and 2 Australian Silver Medals together with 1 State and 2 Australian Bronze Medals. Neil has gained a total of 25 Surf Life Saving Awards during his service to the Club and Association. In he was awarded a 25 year Service Award and in received a 15 year Patrol Award As a builder, Neil has offered his services on numerous Club Projects, more recently the furbishing of the Black Swan Room. He has been a willing volunteer to the work force on Carnival days whether it be to erect fences or cook on the BBQ. Neil Dalziel has over 50 years involvement in the Surf Life Saving movement. The Maroochydore Club is very fortunate that a good percentage of his involvement has been here at Maroochydore and I am sure that this association and dedication will continue into the future. Steve Ellwood Steven Ross Ellwood joined the Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club on 28 August 1976 and gained his Bronze Medallion on 10 October Steven was awarded Reserve Active membership in the 1984/85 Season and his Long Service Membership in the 1988/89 season. In Steven s first season he rowed boats and had success in the Club s Junior Boat that finished 3rd in the State Championships and 4th at the Australian Championships. In that season that crew was the winner of the Mattingley and Gatehouse Trophy for the Most Outstanding Competitive Team. In Steven graduated to Reserve Grade and was in the crew that won the Branch and State Reserve Grade Boat Championship and then was awarded the Mattingley and Gatehouse Trophy for the Most Outstanding Competitive Team. In Steven was promoted to crew the Club s Open Boat that won the Open Boat at the State Championships and placed 5th at the Australian Championships conducted on our beach. It is an interesting observation that all of the members of that crew have been awarded Life Membership of the Club. The season saw Steven s Open Boat crew again win both the Branch and State Open Boat Championships. From to this season Steven has rowed in the Master Class and have been in crews that have annexed 6 Branch, 4 State and 1 Australian Championship s together with 2 Branch, 4 State and 1 Australian Silver medals and 2 Branch and 3 State Bronze Medals Steven was awarded the Alex Devlin Memorial Trophy for the Most Outstanding Masters Competitor. Using his knowledge of work place health and safety gained from his employment Steven has been the Club s Safety Officer and a member of the Board of Life Saving from to this current season. He was the Club s Boat Manager , Steven has gained a total of 28 Surf Life Saving Awards during his service to the Club and the Association. In he was awarded a 25 year Service Award. Steven has been a regular House to House collector over the years and has utilised his skills as a fitter and turner to ensure that the Club has not had to purchase any rowlocks for many years. Steven Ellwood has had a great influence over a number of sections of the Club over a long period of time. He has been a dedicated, loyal and proactive member who, will no doubt, continue to contribute greatly to the Club into the future. 3

6 President s Report Steve Wieland As our club completes its 99th season and edges closer to celebrating its Centennial Year, it is time to pause and reflect on the transition of Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club from its humble beginnings. What would our forefathers think if they knew that the lifesaving service they started 100 years ago has grown to include a members club house which includes a licensed venue to support and fund our modern day lifesavers, storage for many thousands of dollars of lifesaving, competition and junior activities equipment and dedicated training and gym facilities for its members at alternative locations. How proud would they be to know that we have maintained the same tradition of vigilance and service to the community, that we have maintained their standard of no life lost between the flags and still strive to offer support and a workforce for local community events. Like our forefathers this is achieved by the hard-work of many people who share a common goal. It is because of this unified purpose that so many of our members give so often to help out at events, carnivals, patrol and competition. An added strength for Maroochydore is your Board of Management. I am lucky to have a hard-working and supportive Board to assist in the management of the club. Every Director I work with puts in a lot of time and effort to improve services under their portfolio, and best represent their fellow club members. At this time I wish to formally thank Wade Lee, who has held the challenging roles of Deputy President and Director of Surf Sports. Wade has worked tirelessly at carnivals and has been of great assistance to provide the general member perspective at Board meetings. Our Board strives to make sure that the best decisions are made for the membership and we try to balance the expectations of the varied sections of the club. The start of the 2014/2015 season saw a boost to patrol equipment with the purchase of a new IRB hull plus a 2nd IRB secured via a SLSQ grant, 2 outboard motors, 2 rescue boards and tubes, plus changeover of all analogue radios to digital. Unfortunately the IRBs were soon decommissioned because of compliance issues, but thanks to the strong representations of Ian Layton (IRB Captain) and Clive Herald (DOLS) to SLSQ and SLSA the club will have replacement IRBs as soon as a supplier is approved and able to fulfil the backlog of orders. Patrols have been maintained throughout the season. Maintenance of club patrols continues to be challenged by a small minority who do not turn up for, or do only part of their patrol obligations. This is a problem that must be addressed. In the off season the BOSS and BOLS will be working together to review current patrol requirements and develop a proposal to encourage every member to fulfil their club obligations. in the remoter areas near the river mouth or south towards Alexandra Headland. In total, patrol members for Patrols 01 to 15 gave 9,058 volunteer hours, a great effort. Many improvements have been made to club premises over the last year and I wish to thank the many members who turn up again and again to volunteer their labour. Major projects done by our workforce include laying the Black Swan footpath along the rock wall at the front of the club, which not only looks great but makes the area much easier to use as a walkway, and just last month a large workforce turned-up to help clear the northern section of the club house for upcoming renovations work. I d like to thank Dale Massie (Building Committee Chair) for all the work he is putting in to have the new nipper toilet area, first aid room and improved storage facilities finalised. In addition, I acknowledge the great work that Kim Musgrave has done to successfully gain the Qld Government $100,000 Grant to fund this building program. Whenever a competition event is held on Maroochydore Beach it offers good promotion of our club, its members and the licensed venue. This year there have been 4 major carnivals: A-Mart All Sport Junior Carnival, Murphy Builders Carnival, inaugural Queensland Youth Championships and State Open Titles. So much work is done in the background each day of an event to make sure arenas are set-up, equipment is available, food and beverages are prepared, competitors are ready and the list goes on. The weather has been very favourable this year and I am very proud of how well Maroochydore has pulled off all the work without any significant problems. I would also like to note the ongoing support of local Councillor Jason O Pray and Sunshine Coast Regional Council to prepare Maroochydore Beach for the Youth Championships and State Titles. Jason has advised that Council will be performing further improvement to the surrounding street-scape in coming months prior to 2016 Aussie Championships. 2014/2015 has been a very successful competitive year with a couple of competitive firsts. Our Juniors hold first place for the inaugural Youth Championships fantastic effort by Bugsy and the volunteer coaches, Age Managers who every weekend turn up and mentor our young athletes, and the junior competitors themselves. Brad Stark and his Board have worked tireless to build a great junior activities section and achieved much over the last few seasons. Not to be outdone our Open Competition section achieved 9 Gold Medals, and won its 1st Female Double Ski Gold medal contested by Alyce Burnett and Brianna Massie. Every single competitor who competed for Maroochydore gives their all and does a wonderful job. You do your club proud. Aussies are now finished and competitors will focus on their next challenge - Rescue 2016 in the Netherlands. As occurs most seasons, our members performed a number of rescues of beach goers and craft users, often occurring 4

7 Your Board of Marketing and Promotion, in conjunction with Supporters Club Management, have done a great job of promoting our club and gaining sponsorship for life saving. This year at the Sports Lunch hosted by Chris Buddha Handy with Natalie Cook and Bruno Cullen we laughed at highlights of their sporting careers, a great day, enjoyed by all who attended. As usual the club s social calendar was jam-packed with the half-year Golf Day and Maroochy SLSC Race Day, followed by $10,000 Draw and annual Golf Day. Your support at these events is critical, as all money raised goes back to our patrolling members and competitors. Next time you see an event being promoted at the Club tell your friends and get them to come along and enjoy some great entertainment and fun days. After 17 years, Ako Hisamatsu will be standing down as Director of the Board for the Liaison Section, International, Shimoda Life Saving Club (LSC) and principle liaison for the Maroochydore SLSC-Shimoda LSC Lifesaving Exchange Program. From Ako s initial negotiations with Mal Pratt, Stan Wilcox, Paul Kelly and Mike Dwyer this program has successfully met its original objectives and continues to keep achieving and improving. I would like to thank Ako and Sandy for their friendship to our club and look forward to seeing them again later this year. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome Shu Miyabe as the incoming Director of the Board for the Liaison Section, International, Shimoda LSC and look forward to continuing this strong and vibrate exchange. Maroochydore has many long-term members who year in, and year out support their club. Such a person Life Member and previous General Manager, Kerry Taylor was recognised this season for his many, many years of contribution to surf lifesaving by the Sunshine Coast Hall of Fame. Kerry has worked tirelessly for the Black Swan since joining back in the 1950 s and I congratulate him that his service remains valued and is recognised. Earlier this year the position of General Manager changed when Craig Thomas resigned in February and moved to Brisbane. I thank Craig for his hard work and the improvements made to club operations, which were recognised at Club Queensland Awards night when Maroochy Surf was voted Best Small Gaming Venue. It is with pleasure that I welcome Lindsey Palmer to the role of General Manager. Previously MSLSC s first Functions Coordinator, Lindsey has returned to the Black Swan after establishing a successful record of hospitality management in Australia and overseas. Lindsey will be able to give valuable input as we plan for the big 100th Year events. Your Supporters Club has been trading very well during difficult times. It is pleasing that the Supporters Club Committee is receiving good feedback on the quality of meals and service. Under the guidance of Melissa West, the Functions Room is gaining strength and bookings are increasing. Succession planning and business stability are one of the areas I am actively working with the Board and management team to improve. Changes may be small, such as the introduction of a club for each Board Director to more significant change such as the requirement for every Board member to attend governance training and induction early in the upcoming season. In closing I would like to thank the management and administration team who work so hard in the background. I also wish to thank every club member for being part of this great club The Black Swan. I ll see you on the beach. 8 Nick Dash Director & Secretary Mike Dwyer Secretary Narelle Souter Director Board of Administration and Membership Narelle Souter, Director Mike Dwyer, Secretary Mike Dwyer, Secretary s Report Initially, I would like to thank Nick Dash for his service this year and in the past as the Director of Administration and Membership, and also in the role as Secretary of this Club. Nick has performed these roles and indeed many other roles in the club to a high standard over many years. I hope to see Nick continue in his service to Maroochydore SLSC and the community in the new season. In my short stint since taking on the Secretary s role in February, it has been pleasing to see that Maroochydore SLSC and Supporters Association, the Maroochy Surf Club employees, all it s nippers, patrolling members, competitors and volunteers, are still up with there with the Best in the Country. From my involvement in this club and participating at other levels in surf lifesaving, I can say this with experience and conviction. I thank all Board members for their assistance since coming back to sit on a club Board, but importantly to President Steve, Craig Thomas and Brad Vines in the initial few weeks and the lifesaving administration staff since that time. I wish the new Secretary and all club members all the best in what will be a very exciting season and 100th birthday year. Narelle Souter, Director s report I wish to support Mike Dwyer s above comments acknowledging Nick Dash s years of service and dedication to MSLSC as Director of Administration and Membership. Since assuming this role as Director I understand how complex and challenging, yet satisfying the work is. Membership for the season comprised: Junior Activity (5-13 yrs.) 264 Cadets (13-15 yrs.) 41 Active (15-18 yrs.) 35 Active (18 yrs +) 132 Award 50 Reserve Active 3 Long Service 121 Past Active 5 Associate 234 Life Members 55 Vice Presidents 113 Leave / Restricted 3 This indicates a 28% increase in Active Patrol members (15 yrs. +) and an 11% increase in Junior Activity Members on last season. Other figures are comparable to last year s membership. There has been a 33% increase in total membership resulting from transfers for the season in Full or Competitive Rights, the numbers are below: Transfers In 91 Transfers Out 68 Maroochydore SLSC has for many years had strong representation at Branch and State Level and in the past season this trend continues. Every patrol performed has the potential for a rescue to occur. In the past season a number of rescues were executed exceptionally well. In August 2014 at the SLSQ Awards of Excellence, the Jack Dearlove MBE Medal for Lifesaving Excellence Outstanding Rescue was awarded to Gary Wilkie, Justin Fay, Steve Wieland, and Certificate of Merit awarded to Steve Dunn, Corey Stone, Chris Schultz & Chris Howell for their involvement in the rescue of 2 swimmers earlier in the year. The club is extremely proud of every member who participated in the rescue, as they drew on their training and showed outstanding character under pressure. 6

9 Surf Safe Appeal in its revised format was moderately successful this season. Collections were conducted in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast for the first time in many years. It is regretful that participation is low, even though the planning Committee took on board member feedback that they wanted to collect on the Coast not just in Brisbane. Next season the Surf Safe Appeal Committee will continue to refine the processes associated with the Appeal. The money collected goes directly back to each member through provision of services, subsidy and equipment, therefore improved attendance in 2015/2016 Appeal will result in improved outcomes to you. Apart from providing patrolled beaches and competitive events, MSLSC also participates in other community activities. Of note this year have been: SLSQ AWARDS OF EXCELLENCE 2014 ANZAC Day Celebrations. Our club history shows that the first working President OH Youngman, had four sons who fought in the Great War. Continuing our club s tradition of acknowledging our past and current service men and women, Maroochydore SLSC was represented by Alicia Fay and Dylan Andrews at the Maroochydore RSL ANZAC service. Alicia and Dylan laid a wreath to commemorate the landing of Australian and New Zealand forces at Gallipoli in The 2015 SLSQ Memorial Day was held at Maroochydore Beach and attended by dignitaries, fellow life savers, family and friends. Following a service held in the Black Swan Room, the attendees followed April Burnett and Jasmine Sharkey to the ocean. The IRB crewed by Ian & Tracey Layton set the wreath adrift at sea during which attendees paused to remember those who have gone before us and those who laid the foundations of our great surf club and lifesaving movement. SLSQ MEMORIAL DAY 2015 The Constitution Review Committee has continued to work towards updating the Club s Constitution. To date the Supporters Club Constitution has been reviewed and implemented. The Surf Life Saving Constitution is expected to be ready for submission at the December General Meeting. My thanks to Chair, Mike Dwyer and fellow members Glynn Topfer and Nick Dash for their input and commitment to his important task. I wish to express my appreciation to all the Board members for their efforts this year. I also wish to acknowledge the club administration staff for their assistance in the last few months. 14 General Manager s Report Lindsey Palmer I am pleased to present the Annual Report to Members for the 2014/2015 Year in which I have only been in the role a short period taking over from Craig Thomas. I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes in welcoming me back to the club. Maroochydore Surf Club is genuinely blessed to employ such a great team dedicated to customer service while providing members with a great range of dining and entertainment options. We are transforming the way that we operate to continuously improve our ability to stay ahead or at least compete with our opposition as this is an ever changing industry, there is no place for complacency. I would like to thank the Board of Directors all of whom possess the skill and aptitude necessary to govern the Club and to ensure its continued growth and success. Two thousand and sixteen will be a year of exhilaration and celebrations while looking to the future with great confidence. Lastly, I ask all members for your continued support and friendship over the future years. Maroochydore Surf Club is much more than bricks and mortar, our Club is all about the people. 15 Board of Surf Lifesaving Report Clive Herrald, Director & Club Chaplain This season, like the previous 2 seasons it has once again been an honour and a privilege to serve as Club Captain in what has for a number of reasons been a rather challenging season. As usual, the season started off quietly with generally good beach and weather conditions with all of the early proficiencies having quite good conditions each time. As the season progressed through Christmas we maintained fairly good beach conditions and only on a few occasions have we had to close the beach due to rough conditions. Not only that, but the water temperature has been warm for longer this year. Traditionally, Easter has brought with it poor beach and surf conditions, which has meant patrols became long and hard going in the afternoon shifts. This year it was anything but, we had great weather for all 4 days, good beach conditions, and for the surfers pretty good surfing conditions, and very little wind to boot so that was a bonus. Our beach has also held up remarkably well again this year and even though we topped up the competition pad in front of the club leading up to States, it shows that the sand pumping from a few years ago has been of enormous benefit to the beach and to the local community overall. As far as events go, the running of States this year both Junior and Senior was a fantastic trial run for next year, albeit on a much smaller scale, but it did show that we are capable of holding such events into the future. This season we have, as expected, had our fair share of rescues in the river mouth with kite surfers getting tangled or separated from their boards and unable to link back up, jet skis running in and out of the river jumping waves with the occasional driver coming to grief by being thrown off the craft and somehow managing to injure themselves, sometimes quite seriously in the process, as well as the occasional boat capsizing with the occupants being thrown into the water and washing out to sea in the outgoing tide. There were a number of major rescues this season, all of which had a happy ending, thankfully, but had we not been onsite and responded quickly the results could have been very different. We had a major leg fracture with a Jet Ski operator that ended up with an unconscious patient and the involvement of the helicopter. Over the Easter 4 day weekend it seemed like the public had gone crazy with such good conditions. We had a Jet Ski operator knocked unconscious by his own craft, lying face down resuscitated and rushed to hospital, his Jet Ski was eventually towed to Mooloolaba by the Coastguard after it was washed out to the shark nets by the outgoing tide. We had another Jet Ski actually sink, something I have not seen before, and then we had a small tinny heading out fishing with 3 occupants capsized in the river mouth. The Police towed it to Mooloolaba with what gear we could retrieve being brought to shore by our IRB crew on patrol. We had another earlier major rescue and resuscitation completed by our patrols where the patient, was unconscious and not breathing but was again revived. In between these we did have a lot of rescues to perform on the beach, mostly outside of the red and yellow flags with rips playing havoc with the beach in different parts particularly on an outgoing tide. Out of all this, every member who has done a patrol or two over the season can hold their head high and even though they may not have been the individuals who carried out the rescues, the fact is that you were on patrol and had a situation arisen I have every confidence that you would have achieved the same outcomes. That said it is a stark reminder that accidents do happen, people can do silly things, and many tourists not familiar with the power of the ocean can get themselves into trouble very easily. By virtue of our dedication to patrols and keeping our beach safe we have again managed another season without a fatality. On that note well done and congratulations to each and every member who gave their time to patrol. Of some interest, earlier in the season I was having dinner with a friend from overseas who asked me about sharks and the number of sightings, attacks etc that we encounter. My response was quite simply that we have not had to close our beach due to a shark sighting for quite a few years. As Murphy s Law would have it, the very next day we had 2 sightings just south of the flags which were reported by club members out surfing. And as a result we had to close the beach for an hour or so whilst the IRB went out to confirm and chase it/them out to sea. I felt a bit silly that night telling my friends that we had closed the beach from a shark sighting that very day only a day after I had told them we did not have a problem. With regards to gear and equipment, this season we purchased 4 new rescue boards, a new supply of rescue Tubes, 2 IRB Motors, as well as 2 new IRBs and some additional first aid equipment. Many of you will have heard that the new IRBs we and many other clubs purchased have been deemed inoperable, as they do not meet the required specifications. Apparently the manufacturers in New Zealand decided to contract out the orders to a Chinese company, who changed the specs and used a different fabric. As a result both new IRBs are not to be used under any circumstances and will need to be replaced. That in itself is also a problem, as there are so many clubs in the same boat that if we order now we will not see a new IRB till next March at the earliest. 13

16 When we received the new IRBs and before we became aware of the problems we had donated one of the older IRBs and motors to Shimoda and had shipped it off to them. We had also taken another old craft out of service which means we currently have 3 operational IRBs only instead of the usual 5. After Aussies we received another new ATV which means that we can still comply with our agreements and will look to sell the 6 wheel drive Polaris in the next few months. The Arena Cover and zips are a bit worse for wear and we will be looking to replace them in the off season in readiness for next season start in September. This season we have also agreed with the organisers of Ocean Street Markets to continue to provide them with first aid services each month as well as the Easter Sunday event. In return they contribute $200 per month for the regular sessions and $750 for the Easter Sunday event. We do need volunteers to help out each month for the regular 4 hours and are looking at the idea of allocating to patrols as part of their commitment. We may consider these events as part of the compulsory attendance at our collection day but as yet no firm decision has been taken. With many things there is an ever changing environment and we need to adapt to those changes. I am very conscious of the commitment that everyone makes when renewing and agreeing to patrols and associated commitments for each season. I also want to acknowledge those members who volunteered their time on Christmas Day. It is a huge call to take time away from family on that day and I congratulate you all for having done so. To Peter Fraser who this year has stepped down as radio operator after 19 years of dedicated service, a big thank you. To the members of the board of Lifesaving, Scott Steele, Rob Elford, Narelle Souter, Gary Wilkie, Brad Kildey, Ian Layton, Phil Lyons, Noel Furmage, Mark Evans, Jeff McMahon and Marlene Sharkey, a big thank you for your contributions throughout this season. Without your efforts, mostly behind the scenes, the club lifesaving operations would not have managed as well as they have. Also, a special thank you goes to Scott Steele my Deputy Director who has attended a number of board meetings on my behalf, has organised the first aid sessions at Ocean Street Markets as well as taking on a number of other projects as and when required during the season. A special thanks to Deb, his wife for giving him a leave pass so often. Whilst not all the duties involved are necessarily enjoyable, most of what has to be done as Club Captain and Director of Lifesaving is. 17 Chief Training Officer s Report Brad Kildey With the completion of another busy season within the training camp, I can only say that it has been a challenging one. There have also been dramatic changes with all of our Emergency Care Training being taken over by ALAQ which is the education arm of SLSQ. This in itself has caused a lot of confusion not only for myself but for our members wanting to gain or renew awards that fall under the Emergency Care banner. As with the implementation of any new system, there will always be teething problems which I am confident will be ironed out prior to the commencement of the season. With the support of a tremendous team, we have again tried a variety of different approaches with how and when we conduct training courses, as well as experimenting with different training methods. Some have worked, others have been taken back to the drawing board, but regardless, we are making a conscious effort to improve not only the way we train, but also the scheduling of courses to better accommodate the busy lives of our working volunteers as well as our active athletes. we are all looking forward to being involved in the upskilling of some very long standing and respected past members who will be returning to our beaches as a part of this very commemorative season. A very big thankyou to all of our Trainers, Assessors and Water Safety who have contributed their time and expertise throughout the season, you are the gateway to our volunteer Surf Life Savers and Surf Sports competitors. I look forward to working with you all in the new season. We have seen the interest of new members joining the training team throughout the season and beginning to put their skills to work on the beach and in the theory room. They too are feeling the rewarding experience of being involved in placing newly skilled Surf Life Savers on to our beach. There have been many new awards issued during the season, a combination of new members to the club and existing members upgrading and furthering their life saving skills. As a Trainer and/or Assessor, it s always extremely rewarding to see people you have trained putting their skills to work on our beaches and in everyday life. I applaud everyone who can give up their time to donate such an integral skill to our community. With the season fast approaching, planning and scheduling has already begun on a number of areas including the Trainers, Assessors & Facilitators Proficiency, Junior Awards and potential new courses that may be offered. With our 100 year anniversary and the hosting of Aussies next season, we are preparing for a massive but rewarding season ahead and 15

20 Radio Officer s Report Noel Furmage I would first and foremost like to sincerely thank Noel Messer for his assistance and support during my first season as Radio Officer here at Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club. I was away overseas for the first two months of the season, and Noel continued his usual good work until I was able to return and take over the reigns at the end of November. He has been a valuable asset to me in both his knowledge and giving of his time to help me slot smoothly into a very satisfying role within MSLSC. We commenced the 2014/15 patrol season with 19 Radio Operators, all very experienced and with only 15 patrols on the calendar, one could say we were in a very enviable position. However, I am aware of natural attrition, so I kept the ad in the club window and the enquiries kept rolling in. To date we have 29 Radio Operators, so 10 new people have joined our ranks during this season. Five (5) have completed their training and are now Radio Operators in their own right and five (5) are still in training. A BIG Welcome to:- Declan Billerwell, Eric Rennex, Graham Davies, Lorna Willis, Mary-Lou Burgess, Chris Easey, Janice Hunt, George Ritchie, Chris Wadeson and Peter Harvison. The 2014/15 season had its challenges with the switch to the new Digital Radio network. A total of 17 new Radios were purchased by the club, and the cost of some of these radios was met thanks to the fundraising efforts of our Grants Guru Kim Musgrove. Thanks and well done Kim. Congratulations to Cliff Upton who has been awarded the Athol Nixon Memorial Trophy for the Best Radio Operator for the 2014/15 season. Cliff has been with the club a few years now and is a valuable member of our team committing himself not only to Radio Operator Patrols, but also on the beach as a 1st aider on regular patrols. Well done Cliff. We are sadly losing 2 Radio Operators this year. Susan Ferrar in her second year has decided to call it a day and move on. Peter Fraser is also leaving us after a very long stint. Peter joined Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club in the 1995/96 season and completed his Radio Operators Certificate on 5th October Peter has patrolled for 19 seasons, missing the 2001/02 season due to health problems. Peter was the Radio Officer on the Board of Lifesaving from 2006 to He received his 10 year patrol award in the 2007/08 season. This is a remarkable achievement. Well done Peter and enjoy you re well-earned break and your retirement. Thanks for your many years of service. Finally, I would like to thank all the Radio Operators for their dedication and commitment over this patrol season, Clive Herrald and his Board of Lifesaving for their support and encouragement and we ll see you all back in September for another great year at Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club. We purchased 14 new Handheld sets for beach use and 3 fixed stations, 1 for the ATV and 2 for the Radio Tower Base Station operations. The main issues with the new radios, are that they are much more noise sensitive, than the old analogue radios. They tend to pick up wind and wave background noise and amplify it through the radio, which tends to effect the transmission if the Operator is not aware of this. The other issue has been a batch of faulty batteries and so far I ve had to replace 4 radio batteries in 1 season. AA Radio have been working tirelessly on both these issues and the fine tuning of the radio network by them was producing greatly improved communications by the end of the season, with more work to be done during the off season. We expect next seasons Radio Communications to be greatly improved over this season and that will be a win/win situation for all concerned. 18

21 IRB Captain s Report Ian Layton I usually start this report with it s been a challenging year, or something like that but really it has been a very frustrating and difficult year. The main reason for this has been the complete collapse by the manufacturer in the specification compliance to which IRB s must be built. This affected not only Maroochydore but also other clubs throughout Queensland and other states who received boats mid to late I m sure you have heard stories going around the club but at the time of the newsletter going to print SLSQ has stepped in and basically said assign us control and we will take on those who have done the wrong thing. The idea being individual clubs can have one combined voice (SLSQ) in order to recoup their financial losses and restock with compliant craft as soon as possible. This will take some time as you just can t order an IRB and have it show up the next day, and this will only get worse as other clubs look to restock from limited supplies. There is some talk of SLSA ordering a batch of IRB s, up to 30 at a time, in order to stock them and Clubs can then order direct from SLSA thereby speeding up the process. I guess we will all have to wait and see what happens. I m pleased to say that we have been able to trade in 2 of our old motors as part of our annual fleet update. New motors are now fitted with an hour meter, this allows me to not only keep track of its operational history but it will also assist with tradeins as actual hours are displayed to any potential purchaser. We have also upgraded all the prop guards to the brand Propel, these guards are proving to be very effective and less prone to cavitation. We also had the official naming of the IRB we know as Shannon. For those of you who are new to Maroochydore, his boat is named in memory of Shannon Driscoll, a club member who before he passed away was a dedicated bronze trainer, footballer and all round nice guy who was always ready to help out and also loved to share a drink or two. It was an honour to have 3 generations of Shannon s family help us celebrate this naming. His mother Biruta, wife Libby, daughter Sophie and sister Daniella, were all there to share this with us, the tribute to the memory of Shannon Driscoll. There were the usual IRB award courses conducted throughout the year all with Brad Kildey s invaluable assistance with the small mountain of paperwork we now have to process, and of course these courses couldn t have been run without the help of club members such as Jeff Gelhard (Steggs), and Ogilvie Thom (OT). Without their excellent support and guidance the training would be so much more difficult to deliver and of course a special thanks to Tracey Layton who I should mention has helped deliver the training in all courses for as long as I care remember. My thanks also goes to Glenn Mulholland who kept the IRB s stocked with fuel every weekend, also for getting the ventilation improved in the IRB room which was rapidly becoming a problem and for rebuilding the rear wall which now has strong hooks on it to store gear. If I have forgotten to mention your name I apologise, my defence is it s been a long, long year. Also, my thanks to those who helped us with the frequent little tasks such as helping lifts motors and IRB s etc. 19

22 Gear Steward s Report Marls Best At the beginning of the season we engaged the new ATV with the Polaris being used as a backup. We have secured a new ATV from Aussies which will be put into action for the beginning of the next season and the Polaris will then be sold. The newer lighter Patrol arena is proving much easier to manage on the beach and easier to store away under the clubhouse over the off season we will be making some upgrades to replace the cover as many of the zips and clips are broken. With a new frame for the Shade Shelter this continued to provide excellent protection from the weather for the Patrol teams. Sand bags were purchased to secure the tent in bad weather; however someone thought they would be better for their camping trips, however given the heavy frame this hasn t caused to much grief for Patrols. This year has seen the purchase of 4 new Rescue Boards, this has been a great asset to Patrols and we were then able to decommission a lot of the old boards that were damaged or as old as the Ark. A large number of rescue tubes were also purchased with plenty still in stock for next season. Two new IRB s and motors were purchased this year and unfortunately are simply looking pretty sitting in the racks due to non-compliance issues. It is now looking like we won t be seeing the replacement ones until March next year which will provide a big shortage of IRB s next season. The only issue we had over the season was the availability of uniforms, hopefully by next season we will have a large stock although it has been entertaining seeing some of the guys in Patrol shirts that look more like rashies. Phil has done a fantastic job of maintaining all the first aid equipment and Noel with the radios. I d like to say a big thankyou to Glenn, Dennis and Owen, you have done a lot of maintenance work over the season and to all Patrol members who all help to look after our equipment. First Aid Officer s Report Phil Lyons As our club s First Aid Officer, it gives me great pleasure to; once again, furnish my Annual Report, this being my sixth since accepting the position. I d like to take this opportunity to thank all members for assisting to maintain our equipment throughout the patrol season. There were only a few occasions when the resuscitation equipment was required and I m pleased to report that, due to the diligence of our members checking the equipment at the commencement of their patrols, everything was operational. Keep up the good work. Having said that, there were a couple of occasions when some members weren t sure where spare equipment i.e. spare oxygen masks, tubing, resuscitation bags & reservoirs were kept both in the cases and first aid room. I am always happy to give any member a tour of the first aid room if they feel the need. My contact details are situated directly under the wall phone in the First Aid room. If any major equipment has been used during patrols, I encourage members to leave messages on the white board advising me of what has been used that needs my attention & replacing. Also I welcome any suggestions as to how you think things can be improved. I wish to thank all the volunteers who helped out in First Aid at the Row for Cancer event and I m happy to inform you that as always, it was great success and our club will be very much involved in the event this year on Saturday 22nd August. As in past events, I will be appealing for volunteers for the First Aid area so if you can assist, please contact me. Murphy Builders and Westpac Junior events were once again a great success and I thank all the First Aid volunteers for their efforts, considering both days were probably the coldest, wettest and windiest days of the season, great work team. 23 Board of Marketing and Promotions Report Fran Boulton, Director It has been a very busy year for our dedicated Marketing and Promotions team. With the cost of living increasing every year and most household and business budgets at bursting point, raising funds for any charitable cause is never easy. Surf Life Saving is no exception. Fortunately, we have many generous people and organisations in our community who support and sponsor our club in many different ways, large and small. Without their help, it would be impossible to keep Maroochydore Beach safe. Funds raised enable the Club to provide the equipment and training necessary for our Surf Life Savers to maintain our core activity of beach patrols. Therefore, it is important that we are actively out in the community seeking opportunities to attract sponsorship dollars. Although money is tight out there, we have been indeed fortunate to secure support from many sources, and for that we are very thankful. Firstly, I would like to thank our largest donor, Maroochy Surf, our licensed Club. Without Maroochy Surf and all of the people who support it, our job would be almost impossible. a good way to meet up with Club friends before Christmas and have a drink with them. As I mentioned earlier in my report, things are a little tight out there. However, we have managed to maintain our current sponsors and add several more to our current list. In the past twelve months this Board has managed to raise $118, with sponsorships and fund raising events here at the Club. Finally, I would like to acknowledge my team of the past year. To Anne Dun, Melissa Woollett, Natalie Jarrott, Life Member Paul Thomas and Carnival Organiser Wade Lee, my sincerest thanks for the time and energy you have put into your roles over the past twelve months. without your advice and assistance my role would be impossible! I would also like to thank Steve Wieland, our President, and the Board of Management for your continued support. Also thank you to Craig Thomas and Lindsey Palmer, Melissa West, Christie Levens, Lauren Mulholland, Chelsea Roxburgh and Larissa Hallam; I have sincerely appreciated all the assistance given to me over the past year. During the course of the year we have our own fundraising events here at the Club and with the hard work of our members they have grown into very successful and profitable events. Our annual Surf Girl Golf Day is always a popular day and one of our most profitable events with many sponsors and players. The Sports Luncheon in July and Race Day in August were well attended and successful, which raised much needed funds. We hope that these two events will have you all out there, rushing to buy tickets for this year s Luncheon and Race Day. We have been having a Golf Day in August as well, which is proving to be very popular and successful. November and December were big months on the competition calendar for Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club with two carnivals on our beach. We held the Amart Sport Junior Carnival in November and the Murphy Builders Maroochy Classic Carnival in December. Amart Sport is a new sponsor for the Junior Carnival and it has proved to be a very successful relationship between us and we are very lucky that Amart will be continuing to sponsor this carnival into the future. The Murphy Builders Maroochy Classic had two great days of competition and proved to be very successful with $35,000 in prize money on offer. Murphy Builders have also committed to another two years and we are hoping to have the prize money up to $40, at next year s carnival. Special thanks must go to our Committee Member and Carnival Organiser Wade Lee for the dedication and hard work that he and his team put into both Carnivals. Once again, a job well done. Our final fundraiser for the year is the Maroochy $10, draw in December. This was once again a very successful afternoon, with all 250 tickets sold. 24 Board of Surf Sport s Report Wade Lee, Director Another successful Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club Surf Sports season has recently come to an end at the Aussies 2015, North Kirra Beach. KEY SEASON HIGHLIGHTS INCLUDE: A close third for the 39 Pool Rescue team members at the Queensland Pool Rescue Championships, and third place for the Club at the Australian Pool Rescue Championships in Sydney. Pam HENDRY and Chelsea GILLETT s selection in the Australian Surf Lifesaving team to contest Rescue 2014 in the International Competition in Montpellier, France. Numerous World titles won by members who attended Rescue 2014 (World Titles) in Montpellier, France. Strong representation at the Coolangatta Gold with numerous teams and individuals competing well. A great showing on our home beach at the Murphy Builders Maroochy Classic. 13 Maroochydore Members selected in the Qld Cyclones team for interstate. Continued success of our First Aid Section with U15 and Open teams who were undefeated throughout the season. Four gold medals for the Boat Section at the Queensland Surf Lifesaving Championships. Hosting of Youth and Open Queensland Surf Lifesaving Championships on Maroochydore Beach. The Junior club winning the Youth Queensland Surf Lifesaving Championships Club Title. Finishing 7th overall in the Club Championship at Aussies 2015 I spent nine days on the beach at the National Titles and came home with many personal highlights. In particular it was great to see Tainui KAIHAU and Lachlan MASTERS lead the field into the second leg of the U17 Ironman final and I will never forget the emphatic Open Women s Taplin win with extraordinary performances by Alyce BURNETT, Laura PETTIGREW and Nikki CHAPMAN. Of special note I congratulate Fiona MEREDITH and Maggie DONNELLY for their undefeated season and amassing their 6th National Gold medal. NATIONAL TITLE WINNERS WERE : Grace KAIHAU s win in the U15 Women s Board Race. Matt PALMERS s win in the U15 Men s Surf Race. Shaye TRAVERS, Ally CLARKE and Grace KAIHAU s win in the Women s U15 Board Relay Race. Matt PALMER and Jackson WOOLETT s win in the Men s U15 Board Rescue race. Jake DALE, Jy DUFFY and Joshua JONES-REW s win in the U19 Ski Relay Race. Fiona MEREDITH and Maggie DONNELLY s win in the Open First Aid. Tristan WALLER and Clay BURNETT s win in the U15 First Aid. Alyce BURNETT, Nikki CHAPMAN and Laura PETTIGREW s win in the Open Women s Taplin Relay. Bri MASSIE and Alyce BURNETT s win in the Open Women s Double Ski. I congratulate the boat section on continued growth and success in all categories of competition and forecast a very rewarding upcoming season for the section in 2015/16. On behalf of the Maroochydore Surf Lifesaving Club, I would like to thank Sue BAXTER-WINCH and John WINCH for nearly a decade of volunteer coaching of the clubs members in the Pool Rescue Discipline. During this time, their efforts have led to numerous successes of Maroochydore members at a World, National, State and branch level, and the club to be recognised as a heavyweight in the Pool rescue domain. All the best in your future endeavours Sue and John! I thank all parents and supporters for their continued commitment to their children and the clubs endeavours. In particular I would like to thank Team manager Justin FAY and Rob ELFORD for their tireless efforts this season. The season is about to be upon us with an exciting once in a lifetime opportunity of competing at an Australian Titles on our home beach. 25 Team Manager s Report Justin Fay For Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club Surf Sports, 2015 has been a stellar year with a healthy growth in our competitor listing. I put that down to our coaching, our known outstanding performance records, our Surf Sports program and last but not least the pure desire to compete for the most professional team on the beach, The Black Swan. Our team of athletes has once again excelled at Local, National and International level in all areas of the sport, proven by many inclusions in Branch, State and National teams. Our Boat section has proven itself as a force to be reckoned with, among Australia s best rowers. With Open Male, Open Female, Reserve grade, U23 Women and Junior Male crews competing hard for their mates and flying the Black Swan colours with strength and pride all year. Especially at Aussies with all teams making it through to Saturday s heats and U23 Women and Junior Men both showing determination and skill to make it to finals on Sunday, where the boys gave it their all and the girls finished a very credible 4th. Under the watchful eye of Sue Baxter-Winch, once again our Pool Rescue team grew in numbers and stature with an impressive season. Wins at Branch, State and an incredible result at Nationals and Worlds with many gold, silver and bronze medals taken home, accompanied by some National and International records that will stand for some time. This is a credit to Sue and her team s commitment to achieve the highest results at all levels. Both Sue and the team are a credit to the club. Our First Aid team under the expert guidance of Lenore Grice, proved again that they lead from the front with U15, U19 and Opens qualifying their way to the top by making Nationals. But for them, just making that wasn t enough, they continued their march to the top with our U15 achieving Gold, U19 achieving Silver and Opens achieving Gold and Silver. Their commitment to themselves, their field and the Black Swan is second to none. This year saw a lone competitor make National level in Champion Lifesaver, an event which is also qualification based. Maddi Korac quietly went about her business, made her way to Aussies and finished a very credible 6th which is no mean feat. This shows her dedication to study, train and perform at an elite level. I certainly foresee podium finishes for Maddi in the future with her commitment to the sport, pride in the Black Swan and drive to be at the top. Our Beach competitors once again proved their strength and determination, propelling themselves across the sand at great speed throughout the year at all events. With a rise in members, under the watchful eye of Glen these boys and girls have trained hard and raced harder, grown in confidence and learnt the skills needed to continue to grow in their achievements. Their dedication and commitment to the Black Swan is unshakable. Our lone runner, Cody Rychvalsky, made it to the U19 sprint final and with injury fought all the way to come away with Silver. Great effort! Many of our athletes have been chosen as representatives in other sporting arenas in Branch, State and Australian teams. There are too many to list, but rest assured they re all worthy of their selection and the Black Swan is proud of them and their endeavours. The Coolangatta Gold Pain and glory enticed a more than a few this year. The results over the weekend speak for themselves, showing strength, determination and individual and team spirit beyond imagination. The Open Women defended their title whilst the Open Men gave it their all to finish a vastly improved 6th. Doing it for each other our U19 Female teams finished 2nd and 3rd whilst the U19 Male teams finished 2nd and 6th. Ashley Massie and Kirk Jarrott teamed up with some old mates to win their division whilst Kylie Zikarsky and Steve Dunn showed true Black Swan grit pushing the limits of mind and body to finish very respectively to the cheers of the crowd. And next, the juniors, taking out their age groups with 1st places to Tiarnee Massie and Jenaya Massie. Well done! A huge effort displayed from all who attended. 23

26 States Senior State Titles were held in some challenging conditions on our own beach with the Black Swan team excelling, picking up 23 gold in U15 to Opens. The greatest hall of medals at States to date! The boaties won 4 Gold of the 7 on offer in a dominant display, proving they are a force to be reckoned with. Aussies The week started with the first ever Youth Titles. Scoring 4 Gold medals in the male U15 Surf Race Matt Palmer, Female U15 Board Race Grace Kaihau, Male U15 Board Rescue with Matt Palmer and Jackson Woollett and Female U15 Board Relay with Grace Kaihau, Alexandra Clarke and Shaye Travers. The junior team also picked up many second and third medals. Together they managed to (unofficially) win the carnival. Look out Senior s, this bunch is coming to get you! Our Masters competed next with two days of awesome results, Individual and Team Golds, propelling them to a very respectable 10th place overall winning 3 Gold, 9 Silver and 6 Bronze. The standard of competition is increasing every year in the Masters section with Aussies on our own beach next year we are hoping for great results. The Open s came next and over 5 days of heats and semi s they managed 7th overall and a great showing on finals Sunday. With 4 Gold medals 4 Silver and 8 Bronze it was a great week. I was proud of all our athletes and proud to be part of the Black Swam team. Some of the Gold s I was privileged to see were Alyce Burnett and Brianna Massie in the Open Female Double Ski, Jye Duffy, Jake Dale and Joshua Jones-Rew in the U19 Ski Relay, Clayton Burnett and Tristan Waller in the U15 First Aid, Fiona Meredith and Maggie Donnelly in the Open First Aid, Alyce Burnett, Nicole Chapman and Laura Pettigrew in the Open Female Taplin (in which I was cheering so loud the crowd around moved away. Who cares, they were Northcliffe anyway). Standing back, watching the whole team digging in and giving everything they had, race after race. I was especially proud of the U17 boys and U17 girls. The field of athletes they competed in was incredible. They raced hard and led the field in many races and finished heads held high and smiles of their faces. There were so many outstanding individual and team performances, I congratulate you all. We had a small team but every member stepped up and proved to themselves and each other that they have what it takes, that s what makes a winning team. QUALITY IS BETTER THAN QUANTITY. I would like to congratulate the coaching staff on a job well done. And also to our Official and IRB personnel, who give their time again and again. Without you there is no competition.
