1 Unlimited performance Proctor carbon spars
2 Attention to detail The new Proctor carbon spars are now being used on the Musto Skiff. And they are all set to create more than a stir in Open Class boats like the Phantom, Merlin Rocket and International canoes. The new Proctor carbon spar range features teardrop shaped profiles and a unique step-down taper system. All backed up by the Seldén Group philosophy of attention to detail all the way from the design of the spar sections to superb quality controlled production. Sophisticated technology After assessing the most suitable and efficient composite manufacturing methods, Seldén made a serious investment in the design and production of a pre-preg filament winding facility at its Park Gate, Southampton, plant. The sophisticated technology used, has enabled Seldén to produce a new generation of carbon spars. This revolutionary range of super-efficient profiled carbon spars heralds a new era in the design of high performance carbon rigs for dinghies and day boats. Proctor profiled spars In real terms, the profile section means that the boat can point higher and go faster! The new Proctor carbon spars have teardrop shapes instead of the round tubes commonly available on the dinghy market. The teardrop profile gives the spar the required stiffness ratios fore and aft to counteract the upwind kicker loads. And the aerofoil shape of the profiled section has improved air adhesion compared to round tubes. So the spar will directly increase lift and reduce drag, allowing a cleaner air entry onto the luff of the mainsail. 2
3 Step-down, a real step up in performance Each mast incorporates the Proctor Stepdown tapered topmast system. This enables an immediate reduction in tube inertia where the compression loads in a rig change immediately above the hound and/or the trapeze point. As a result, the topmast automatically responds through gusts and lulls, as opposed to the mast hinging around the hound point and producing an unbalanced rig as typically occurs with traditional alloy rigs. Proctor Step-down taper system Conventional mast Main mast remains controlled on the neutral axis, maintaining halyard tension and perfect jib shape. Step-down tip responds independently from the main mast section. Reduced air disturbance in upper mainsail due to smaller tube. Upper leach opens, efficiently de-powering the sail. Lower leach remains set for high pointing ability. Mast hinging at shrouds. Mid mast bends. Conventional taper cannot react to gusts. Lower leach opens reducing pointing ability. Jib luff slackens due to lower mast bend deepening the luff. GUST GUST Upper section Locating dowel for upper section ABS sail track Sleeve lead-in Joining sleeve Join collar Lower section No more fighting the boat through the gusts and lulls. The topmast works to your advantage, allowing the boat to effortlessly accelerate through every gust. 3
4 Technology worthy of a world champion Computer automated laminate lay up under controlled tensions gives a Proctor spar a level of tube consistency unattainable via any other composite tube manufacturing technique. Hence, the mast you buy will perform as well for you as it will for a world champion sailor! Materials Only the highest-grade pre-preg tows of T700 or TZ carbon fibre are used to give the sailor the best stiffness-to-weight spar. This, in combination with our filament winding process, enables the highest fibre-to-resin content prepreg to be used. Fibres are laid under tension, which means that we can make the most efficient material choice and supply the lightest spars on the market. Great care, backed by long experience, is taken with the laminate specifications to achieve optimum performance for the minimum weight. The aerospace grade pre-preg has a UV stabiliser in the resin system to give the spars a guaranteed long life, even in the sunniest of climates. In addition to the spar section, a custom-made track has been shaped to extend the profile. It is extruded from a highly advanced lightweight plastic that offers excellent heat & UV stability, and very high wear resistance. Filament alignment Filament winding is controlled using CNC programming. The alignment of the composite filaments (slender fibres) is vital to the performance characteristics of the spar. Our filament winding method, a computer-controlled process (CNC), guarantees consistent and accurate fibre orientation from spar to spar. Fibres can be laid from 0 (uni-directional) to 89 (hoops) and at all angles between to produce a wide range of bend characteristic requirements. Fibres laid under tension for immediate performance effect. 4
