2 WEST Why WYRS Young Match Officials? Aim to recruit young officials to West Develop them as individuals Increase opportunities to participate in Rugby Sustain the future of our sport Majority of Rugby referees in the 24 to 50 age bracket Recruiting of former, injured or retiring players is still important to us, but. RFU vision is to have a qualified referee for all XV-aside games (from U14 upwards), we need more refs Our sport must find, train, mentor and retain referees aged 14 to 24 2

3 WEST Open to all potential young referees Experience shows the majority of YMOs are players and want to carry on playing rugby We know you are keen to assist on specific occasions, and this is great for us Some will want to referee and to progress as an official In this case we recommend that you still continue playing and being part of a team as refereeing can be isolating Small number who want to train as part of the DoE award process or National Record of Achievement We are more than happy to work with you on this, even if you decide you don t want to take it further at this time We aim to promote participation in Rugby Union, Reffing is one way and enables others to play 3

4 WEST How will we get you time in the middle? We will only ever appoint you when you are comfortable and we agree you are ready for the next level The RFU recommendation is initially once trained: 2 age grades below your own (you may decide to stick with this) The RFU allows us to progress from this, we propose: School matches on Wednesdays PM and Saturdays AM, as appropriate Club Junior games on Sundays (usually AM) Progress to 1 age grade below your own Possibly age grade above (some Colts/Junior Colts games too high a level) Student games Wednesdays (once assessed and approved) Once graded Open Age (Saturday Afternoons) As ARs as team of 3s with an experienced ref Miked up once or twice a season, with a Senior Ref Clubs, Teams, Schools, Colleges will agree to a YMO and be briefed on what we expect from them 4

6 WEST In Season 2018/19 Full Rollout to Schools, BUT WE ARE RECRUITING NOW 2017/18 DIRECTLY West Yorkshire RFU will run and fund the Refereeing Children at schools across the District Schools will be asked to nominate candidates for the England Rugby Referee Award (XV a-side) We will offer 20 candidates the course and opportunity to referee to the level they feel comfortable In partnership with our West RDO, CRCs and North Match Official Dev Officer 6
