1 Scarboro Surf Life Saving Club ECHO CLUB NEWSLETTER PRESIDENTS PEN Alan Carville Lightning Carnival On a weekend of changeable conditions our juniors finished in fifth place behind some powerhouse clubs. Unlike last year when the surf was up this time only negligible waves and a long shallow bank. There was a premium on efficient technique and flat water training with the ocean playing little part in the results. Often races were won and lost on the bank with competitors who worked it hardest and avoided the holes reaping the benefits. While the ocean wasn t a variable the temperature certainly was with cold starts and a spectacular lightning storm to bring an early end, at least for the U11 females to proceedings. Well done to Nicole and her team and a big thanks to club members who covered our water safety commitments, some for the second weekend running. I also noted an IRB driver at a loose end eyeing off the bouncy castle, correct Hannah? Gold Table The Scarborough Sportsman s Club (SSC). Remember that name because it was very close to going down in infamy. I ll be remembered in the future as the President Who Demolished A Perfectly Good Club and it was me who was hunting around the SSC premises on Sunday night searching for the iconic Gold Table used to celebrate our competition success for decades and previously the board room table at Channel 7. It wasn t where we d left it the weekend before and the staff didn t know the whereabouts. I wandered outside and as if directed by a higher power the clouds parted and a beam of light from the dying sun fell on the rubbish pile and lo, a glint of gold. Sure enough the SSC had thrown it out. Time on the scrap heap hasn t done the table any good so maybe Bob Blake should think of a different watering hole for a quiet bevvie in the future. 2 Beach Bandit Rumour has it that some of the events at the Aussies, beach sprinting and distance runs for example will be moved from Kirra back to Kurrawa because the beach at Kirra has suffered badly in the recent storms. Anyone who s competed at Kirra will be amazed that a beach that wide can be washed away. Recovering from his exertions stealing medals in two disciplines at the States, beach sprinting bushranger Ben Captain Thunderbolt Whitehurst took recharging his batteries a little too seriously last weekend when struck by lightning on patrol. Ben is understandably amped up about his chances of an individual medal in the sprint next season. What an exciting weekend of competing! Our juniors and their AGMs worked brilliantly as teams and individuals to earn Scarboro SLSC a credible 5 th place. The hard work and training paid off. There were many fabulous individual and team performances, resulting in medals, making finals and junior athletes meeting personal goals. The Junior State Championships had a spectacular start under lights for the flags at Scarborough Amphitheater. Warm evening filled with excitement the Nippers surely put on a show. Saturday commenced with the March Past and the Scarborough team looked fantastic. Two of the three teams in the beach relay from u10s made the final but just missed out on medals. It was a calm before the storm day on Sunday. Lucky for the u10 s and 12 s they managed to leave the beach before the storm came in with all its might with a light show. Some fantastic finishes included... u/10s made all but 1 final, but just missed out again on medals, endurance was certainly tested. A GIANT thanks to the officials, Al, Graham, Paul, Warren, Wendy, Brian and the water safety crew, especially IRB support, Micky G, Hannah and Ali. We finished with a great night on Sunday. It s not over yet though. See you all on the beach for a fun morning on Sunday.

5 Above is a photo of our U15 female Surf Team GOLD Winners!!!! This is the 5th consecutive surf teams this Scarboro cohort has won. Congratulations to all the competitors who competed over 2 days of perfect weather at the recent State Championships at Trigg.Scarboro was well represented in the water arenas especially the U14 and U15 arenas which is a good sign for the future and something good to build on next season. There was a great team spirit in the tents and everyone competed hard and enjoyed the racing. Also great to see so many at the afters party and a welcome return of the master of the Gold table, Bob Blake. I'd encourage all our competitors to keep the swimming going over winter and look forward to develop a more structured program for next season.
