4 Chairman s Message Dear Fellow Members, CONGRATULATIONS TO all the participants of the Annual Swimming Gala. This year was an overwhelming success and thanks to the staff and management for all their hard work. If you could not attend then mark your calendar for next year so you don t miss out again on a wonderful family day has flown by Christmas and New Year is just around the corner. As usual November and December will be very busy as your Club prepares for the year-end functions and activities. When planning your social and business banqueting and also take-away catering requirements for the festive seasons, please keep the excellent services of the USRC in mind and make early bookings to avoid disappointment. Full details of planned events and booking arrangements can be found on other pages of this edition of In Bloom. With the onset of the beautiful weather, various Sporting Sections are in full swing participating in Winter Leagues and Official Competitions. The GC wishes all participants including both social players and teams the very best of luck in their endeavors! The General Committee has been working solidly on your behalf formulating the budget for next year. This is a lengthy process seeking input from management, GC members and most importantly from the Sports Convenors. Eddie Wu, Sports Director, has been in discussions with all the sports sections providing support and guidance. Increasing membership involvements in sport and team excellence are some of the objectives. Through the diligent work of Les Pearce, Projects Director, with Zorro Yuen, Environment & Grounds Director, next year s projects are being identified. The focus is on improving existing facilities and addressing stress areas around the Club. Enjoy the festive season with colleagues and family. The Club has many special offerings this time of the year particularly on or around Christmas and New Year s Eve. Many of these are highlighted throughout the magazine. 5 General Manager s Message Dear Members, THE CHRISTMAS season is here and you will see a lot of activities at the Club to help you celebrate this special time of year. We have plenty on offer to bring the family close together during the Christmas season, in addition to dinner on Christmas eve and Christmas day, we also have the New Years Eve family dinner buffet in the Garden Café. If you are looking for something more intimate for the family, we will have dining promotions in all the dining outlets as well as a sumptuous festive takeaway menu including all the traditional goodies. The Club will also commence major work on the swimming pools in December. The work will take approximately 3 months but will be completed significantly before summer for all to enjoy. The work will include waterproofing and tiling the swimming pool (the pool hasn t been drained in 20 years) and freshen up the surrounding area with new shrubbary and lights. Please be reminded of the following bye laws; Car Park **A maximum of 12 guest car park spaces is available from Monday to Friday only** 30. Car Park a) The car park is reserved for the use of Members and their guests. The General Manager may also permit other vehicles to use the Car Park. b) Motor vehicles are to be parked within the designated spaces and must display prominently for inspection by Club staff a Car Park Label matching the vehicle registration number. d) Parking outside of designated spaces is not permitted. e) The Club accepts no liability for loss and/or damage to vehicles from the use of the Car Park. f) Motor vehicles will not be permitted to enter the Car Park when the Car Park Full sign is displayed. g) Overnight parking may be permitted only with pre-registration with Reception and the permission of the General Manager. k) If a Member cannot produce their Access Card on entry to the Car Park they must obtain a Car Park Ticket and present it to reception for endorsement prior leaving the Car Park. n) Prevailing rates apply to all motor vehicles parked on Club premises. o) Members or their Guests who fail to comply with these Car Park Bye-Laws may be subject to a fine or have their access to the Car Park temporarily or permanently withdrawn. Member Parking p) Generally a Member may park their own motor vehicle in the Car Park subject to the Member remaining on Club Premises. Guest Parking q) Subject to availability, Members Guests are permitted to use the Car Park. 6 r) While the Guest s vehicle remains in the Car Park both the Member and Guest must remain on Club premises. Visiting Sport Team Parking s) Subject to availability, Visiting Sporting Teams are permitted to use the Car Park with the permission of the General Manager. The Sports Convenor must pre-register the Team with Reception. Guests 8. Guests Guests Limitations ii) Shall not introduce guests to the: Squash Courts between 1815 and 2030 hrs on weekdays; 1215 and 1730 hrs on Saturdays, and between 1000 and 1300 hrs on Sundays and Public Holidays. Tennis Courts between 1800 and 2100 hrs on weekdays; between 1300 and 1800 hrs on Saturdays and before 1400 hrs on Sundays and Public Holidays. Lawn Bowls Green without the permission of the Lawn Bowls Sub- Committee as stipulated in Section 38 below, as related to Lawn Bowls. b) Shall not introduce guests to the Fitness Room at any time. c) Shall not host an individual guest more than 3 times in any one. General Responsibilities f) Member, their spouses or their dependents aged 16 years and over: i) Must accompany their guests throughout. ii) Must ensure that their guests are signed in on arrival at the Club in the Guest Book provided at Reception. Members are required to indicate the number of guests using the tennis and squash courts and shall obtain a guest card which shall also be displayed on the court for inspection by Club Staff. Members will be charged at the current rate for their guests using these facilities. iii) Are entirely responsible for ensuring that their guests comply with the Articles of Association and Bye-Laws of the Club, particularly in terms of behaviour, safety, dress standards, age limits and use of mobile phones, and shall be personally liable for all debts incurred and wrongful acts committed by them while using the Club and any claims arising from such acts. Calendar month d) Shall not bring to the Club any person from whom the privileges of the Club have been withdrawn by the General Committee or, without the express approval of the General Committee, a person whose application as a member of the Club has been refused. 7 Executive Chef s Message Dear Members, THE TEMPERATURES are dropping, summer is behind us and now we re looking forward to the festive season. We have a lot in store for you but before I give you the details I would first of all like to thank you for all your good support for past events. For example, the Sunday Roast was booked out and the immensely popular Steak Frites was a complete success! Please be advised that traditionally every year November 2nd is the last day of the Indian buffet, during the festive period the buffet makes way for more festive events, and the Indian buffet will return shortly after Chinese New Year. The festive period is around again, I would like to remind you, please book for your events on time as many dates are already booked full, this is especially the case for the function venues the club has. Christmas Menu s, forms for take away orders etc can all be found in the lobby of the club. There are lots of festive menus coming up throughout the next two months and you can read more about them further down in the magazine so please do check them out, again book on time to avoid disappointment. With the festive season just around the corner, and business increasing I wish to remind Members of our new reservation policy; For any events or functions booked, the following applies; If the reservation is cancelled on the day of the event 100 % charge applies If the reservation is cancelled on the day before the event 70 % charge applies If the reservation is cancelled 2 days before the event 50 % charge applies If the reservation is cancelled 3 or more days in advance, no charges apply Please be advised that the above will be strictly implemented. 23 Cricket News by Ahmed Saleem, Cricket Convenor Solid start to the season Although a number of early season matches have not been played due to typhoon wash-outs and other clubs being unable to field teams, our players have generally made a good start to the 2016/17 season. Our most junior side, the U-11s, have a perfect 2 from 2 record, with winning margins of 94 and 115 runs. Highlights include, standout batting from Rohaab, Muhammad, Jack and Nivedh; and three wickets in one over from Awwab. The U13s are 1 win and 1 loss; including a hat-trick for Abdul Hanan against DLSW Lions, and a great all-round performance of 50 and 3 wickets for Sami Ullah Tariq against Lantau Lions. Our U17s are also 1 from 2, with the highlight of a thumping 241 run win over DLSW Littles being 50s for both Hamza and Jamshaid. Unfortunately, our Seniors and Womens teams have been most affected by the weather and forfeits, though our ladies do sit second in their T20 tournament. Football News by Alan Urmston, Football Convenor The football season got underway in early September with some unexpected but necessary changes to the structure of the Football Section. The Hong Kong Yau Yee League was where it all started for the USRC Football Section in Since joining the League in Division Four, a stream of honours has followed: Division One Winners (2008, 2009, 2014), Division One Runners-up (2007, 2013), Division Two Winners (2000), Cup Winners (2015), Cup Runners-up (2009, 2012), Sixes Cup Winners (2013), Sixes Plate Winners (2004, 2006, 2008, 2014, 2015). Sadly, the Section found itself in a position whereby it was unable to enter a squad in the League for , due in the main to existing players leaving the Club and potential new players, graduates from the Club s Football Academy, deciding to join professional teams rather than stay with the USRC. It was a difficult decision to make but one that was necessary in order to consolidate the existing teams in the Section. The Section therefore entered the season with three senior teams. USRC Gunners As one season closes and another opens, changes at the USRC have been abundant. The Legal League First Division team is renamed The Gunners and the team is now managed by Matt Ferriday, otherwise known as the welsh Brian Clough, taking over from Laurence Rudge. Pre-season results were not ideal (L, D, D) with a loss to Royale Dragons, followed by draws with Revolution and Club Tropicana. There was however, a clear trend of week-on-improvement, keeping spirits high, as well as great turnouts in the bar afterwards. A squad packed with new players began to gel together whilst Matt s system and philosophy of the game continues to bed in. Four games into the season and The Gunners are pretty much par for the course right now (W, W, L, D) with 2 convincing early wins 23

24 Sports Watch against Rula Bula and Spartans respectively, tempered by a loss to early season favourites Discovery Bay. In the final game to date against Corinthians, Gunners were disappointed to come away from a very feisty affair with just a 3-3 draw. A disappointing second half performance and last gasp penalty miss costing the victory that felt deserved. With round 5 against Ruby Murrays, the Gunners will be hoping for a third victory of the season to get back to winning ways and maintain pressure on the teams at the top of the league. Named in honour of the year the United Services Recreation Club opened in Hong Kong, 1911 offers competitive football in the Over-35s Legends League to some of the Club s longest-serving players from the 1990s and early 2000s, as well as a sprinkling of new faces. The former manager of USRC Experience, Rick Leone, is the player-manager of USRC Vitesse USRC Vitesse are the Club s social team, open to all members irrespective of age and ability. Vitesse started the season with a narrow 1-0 win over Kid s Friend, a team of local veteran players. First goal of the season was scored by Eder Ferreira. There ll be plenty more games for Vitesse so check out the Section Notice Board for details. The League currently comprises seven teams, including Hong Kong Football Club, Discovery Bay and The Godfathers. Although small, it has some of the best amateur footballers in HK playing in the twilight of their careers. At the time of going to press, 1911 should have played two games in the Legends League. As it was, we ve won two games, but only had to play one of them. The first ended up being a walk-over against FWD who could not field a team on Friday 30 September. An automatic 3-0 win to 1911 and lots of jokes about who scored the goals and who was man of the match. Our first proper competitive match was played on a wet Wednesday night at HK International School in Tai Tam instead. Midfield dynamo Ciarian Fay has written a great match report, with lots of musical references to The Smiths and Morrissey. The highlights of the game were that we won 5-1 against Spartans, mainly due to a wonderful 15-minute spell of football early in the second half. In that eon, the Rebels from the best kept secret base could barely deliver two Sides to defend against the clones in the Galactic War. Each Side of the woman service corps consisted of only four troopers then. Out of that thirty-odd active male and female Jedi defending the Jedi Order, only about a dozen male and a handful of female Jedi of that era continue serving with loyalty. The Academy of Jedi was established in 2007AD, and from then on, the Temple enrols many Jedi younglings with great potential from our own system. Each year, we have a few Padawans, or Jedi Apprentice, identified. After chosen by the respectful Jedi masters, and with much more practice with their own bowlsabers, the Padawans gradually transform into the elite forces of Jedi knights. Some also become Jedi Masters, and start to take up their own Padawans. Some warp through the Galaxy with the Millennium Falcon or alike, and further pursue their career in other republic systems, honouring and preaching the Jedi Code. Inevitably, a few turned into Sith Lords, and succumbed to the dark side in due course. The Jedi Service Corps has never been stronger. 32 Sports Watch Rugby News Nigel Keith Mattravers, Secretary to Rugby Section The season is well under way for all grades and we have been greeted by record numbers, which is a great sign for the club. The early season bumps and bruises are becoming a thing of the past and the signs are ominous for both our Premiership Men and Woman s teams with some great early season form. Like all other Premiership teams The Tigers bring in players from overseas. This season has seen the club bring in the first woman import player. This is understood to be a Hong Kong first. Karyn Robertson has joined the USRC Tigers family from Fielding in NZ. Karyn played representative level for Manawatu and has been a great addition to the woman s premiership front row. As well as playing Karyn is proving a very valuable as a coaching resource. Like all our men s imports Karyn is helping coach the youth and minis sections of the club. Having the resource of these imports players is of huge benefit to the club. Many having played professionally either in the northern or southern hemisphere. There knowledge and understanding of the game is huge and all are more than happy to pass that down to the Premiership Tigers Players of tomorrow. The youth section has had a changing of the guard with Hau Chow taking over the roll of youth chairmen. Hau has very big shoes to Fill with the outgoing Terry Mulrooney working tirelessly over the last few years where he has got the youth section to a point of such strength we have had to add additional teams to each age group. During October the club was very lucky to be visited by Gold medal Olympic Rugby 7s coach Ben Ryan. Ryan was it Hong Kong for the 7s long lunch and was on his way back to Fiji. The club ran a kit drive which was a very successful effort to get as much old and unwanted kit to the kids of Fiji. A huge thank you to all those that contributed, it will go a long way in the Rugby Mad country where many unfortunately live below the poverty line. We still welcome and look forward to meeting new members, with teams available for all ages and abilities. By the time this goes to print we would have just had our Tigers Festival, which is great showcase of Hong Kong minis rugby. USRC 2 have also been in the mix in Div 4 and have had similar issue to Team 1 as they unfortunately had quite a few matches on Friday nights. USRC 3 are at the moment in 3rd place in Div 5A, but final placings are subject to confirmation. Summer League Roundup The summer league is played mainly for fun with a high turnout of youngsters (unfortunately not from USRC) but the level of squash is amazingly high and quite a few of the senior players are often taught lessons. It can be quite fun watching the more experienced players being given a runaround and no doubt we are watching some of the stars of the future. The 3 USRC teams have found themselves competing for honours this summer with USRC 1 leading Div 3A for most of the summer but slipped back towards 3rd place by the end of the summer USRC player Gary McAuslan (L) USRC player Ross Parker (R) Masters Summer League HKsquash does not have a Masters summer league but such is the enthusiasm to keep a Masters league going during the summer, several of the teams organized a league amongst themselves and this has once again highly successful with USRC finishing mid table. Thanks to Gary McAuslan for organizing the USRC side and to HKFC for an entertaining end of season bash. Winter League The 2016/17 winter leagues have just started and we welcome back some old faces in team 1 with Joe Wong returning to USRC to lead team 1 again. We also welcome the rugby section who have entered a squash team with USRC and in total we have 5 teams competing in the main league and 1 Masters team. USRC Team 1 33

34 Sports Watch Tennis News Martin Li, Acting Tennis Convenor Summer events This summer has been extremely hot with high humidity, which has, understandably, resulted in some of us being lazy! Our tennis section members, however, were not the lazy ones, organizing plenty of events such as friendly matches and a new open tennis ladder. Friendly Matches After the summer league, Brian Ho (Division C2 captain) arranged a friendly match with the Ladies Recreation Club on July 27. More than 16 participants from USRC Division C1 and C2 ended up playing against LRC. Nine matches were played intensively and we completed great tennis with a relaxing friendly dinner gathering. Division C Players from Ladies Recreation Club Another friendly match was arranged by Martin Li and Ken Chan. Our team B& C2 played against Gold Coast yacht and Country Club on 8 Sept. GCYCC captain Mr. Francis Li brought 6 players to meet our teams. All players enjoyed the whole game and again we shared our friendship and love of tennis over a final dinner gathering. Dinner photo Recommended by William Ho, the Tennis SC organizeda new Open Tennis Ladder (mixed singles for men and ladies) for all USRC members. The aim being, to promote tennis for fun, for a sense of achievement and sporting attitude towards others. The Ladder is a great way for members to meet and play with other members who are at their same level. The Ladder chart and rules have been displayed on the Tennis Notice Board. The initial ladder ranking was drawn on August 14 by KK Lau with a total of 24 participants who joined. After the launch of this Open Tennis Ladder event on August 15 more than 10 matches have been played. We are expecting many more challenging matches to come. This tournament, the Thailand ATF Junior Circuit 2 (under 14s) in Bangkok on July 26-30, was joined by a group of 16 other Hong Kong junior players.
