6 EDITORIAL Any complete history of the Model 1911 must start a decade or more before that legendary year, and half a world away in the Philippines. It was here in the tropical heat of those islands that US Soldiers and Marines found themselves locked in combat with fanatic local insurgents and the immediate need for an effective, large caliber defensive pistol became sorely evident. In the wake of the sinking of the battleship USS Maine in Havana harbor in February of 1898, the United States went to war with Spain. Along with an invasion of Cuba, US Navy forces engaged, routed and destroyed the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay in March 1898, in one of the most lop-sided victories in naval history. US ground forces then went ashore to overthrow the Spanish colonial government and occupy the islands. Continuing the armed resistance they had previously shown against the Spanish, the Moro tribesmen of the southern islands engaged the American forces in a long bout of guerrilla warfare that ultimately lasted nearly 15 years. Much of the combat was at close quarters, where the Moros long-bladed kris knives were used to lethal effect. At the time US troops were armed with either.30 caliber Krag or Springfield bolt-action rifles and.38 caliber double-action revolvers. While the.30 caliber rifles proved effective in stopping the attackers, the US troop s handguns demonstrated an unnerving lack of stopping power, resulting in numerous reports of Moro warriors absorbing multiple pistol bullets while they continued to hack away at the Americans. Obviously the US troops morale suffered badly in this situation. The combat pistol situation became so acute that old stocks of Model 1873 Colt revolvers in 45 caliber, many of which dated back to the Plains Indian Wars were returned to active service, where they quickly demonstrated a much better track record of stopping an attacker with one well placed shot. About this time two new armament technologies were also emerging, smokeless powder and the autoloading pistol. In 1906 the US Military, under the direction of General William Crozier of the Ordinance Department, began evaluating several pistol designs along with the suitability of a new cartridge that was designated the.45 Automatic Colt Pistol (or.45 ACP for short). As these military tests continued over the next several years, the Colt pistol began to emerge as the clear favorite. The Colt pistol that was submitted for these military tests was designed by John M. Browning. Without a doubt the most innovative and visionary firearms designer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The 1911 pistol was adopted by the US Military in (you guessed it) The Editor. 10 RANGE SAFETY AND MATCH PROCEDURES All firearms are to be handled ONLY in the following designated areas: - Safety Areas. - Loading and Unloading tables. - At the firing line with the RO present. If you need to work on an EMPTY gun, do it in a safety area only. - Note that no ammunition is permitted in a safety areas. All SASS Wild Bunch rules apply to this match. All long guns must be carried with the muzzles up. Pay careful attention to your muzzle direction at all times. NO dry firing of your guns at the loading and unloading tables. Ammunition or magazines dropped or ejected by a shooter during the course of loading or reloading any firearm during the stage may be recovered and used. If the shooter has a Model 12 shotgun, the Timer Operator (or RO) will ask the shooter to point the shotgun safely down range and pull the trigger to demonstrate it is not cocked. If it goes click, it s a SDQ. If it goes bang! it s a MDQ. A round fired over the berm is an automatic match disqualification. The shooter is responsible for the staging of their guns. A staged gun that falls is a dropped gun and is subject to a penalty. Wait for the timer beep to start your stage. Knockdown targets must fall and swingers targets must clearly move to be counted as hits. Once a firearm is loaded it must be emptied at the line or cleared as per RO instructions. This is a no alibi match. Once a round goes downrange you are committed to completing the stage. The Daily Gobbler - Page 10
11 PISTOLS, MAGS AND HOLSTERS AT ALL TIMES (with the exception of being ready at the loading table or on the firing line) pistols will be carried in the holster empty, action closed, hammer down and NO magazine inserted. Pistol magazines shall be loaded with ONLY FIVE ROUNDS each. Pistol magazines may be loaded at anytime but NOT inserted in the firearm until under supervision at the loading table and in accordance with the procedure at the loading table. Holsters and magazine pouches must be of traditional or military design and made from traditional materials (canvas or leather). The holster must cover the entire length of the barrel to the ejection port. No open front speed holsters are allowed. If a holster has a flap or strap they need not be closed during competition. Magazine pouches must be worn on the opposite side of the body from the pistol. Magazine pouches must be worn vertically and may hold either one or two magazines. At least two inches of the magazine must be covered by the magazine pouch. Magazines must be of a standard length. No extended base pads on magazines are allowed. The Daily Gobbler - Page 11
12 LOADING AND UNLOADING SAFELY PROCEDURE AT THE LOADING - The pistol will be proven empty, closed and the hammer dropped (WTP Rule). A magazine will be Inserted in the Pistol, and the pistol re-holstered. ( Magazine not inserted, NO CALL; slide cycled, after inserting magazine is a SDQ unless corrected before leaving the shooter s hands. ) For the rifle and shotgun the Loading Table Safety Officer will ensure that the long guns are empty. The actions will then be closed and the hammers down. The magazines will then be loaded with the appropriate number of rounds. The actions will NOT be operated again until the shooter is actively shooting the stage at the firing line. PROCEDURE FOR CLEARING THE PISTOL UPON A STAGE COMPLETION - KEEP THE PISTOL POINTED DOWNRANGE! Be very aware of the muzzle direction while you do this! The RO, or designate, will say, Show Clear, instructing the shooter to drop the magazine (If still in the pistol and show the RO the pistol is empty) The RO, or designate, will then say Slide Forward, pull the trigger, holster. The trigger MUST be pulled to allow the hammer to fall unimpeded, and the pistol is then holstered... and not taken from leather again until a new magazine is inserted at the loading table. PROCEDURE AT THE UNLOADING - The pistol, which has already been cleared by the official, shall remain holstered. Loaded magazines may remain loaded in a magazine pouch on the belt. The rifle and shotgun shall be demonstrated to be empty and the actions left open. The Daily Gobbler - Page 12
13 SOME IMPORTANT MATCH NOTES HOW YOU CAN ENSURE THAT WE ALL ENJOY THIS MATCH - We need everyone to get involved with the efficient flow of this match. Please help by being a spotter, picking up spent brass, monitoring a loading or unloading table or keeping score. Remember this rule for being a good spotter: If you think it s a miss, it s a hit. If you know it s a miss, it s a miss. The same applies to procedural penalties. Don t guess, you must be sure to call it. Make sure to get to the loading table before your turn. Only the next 3 shooter s in line at the table please. Keep an eye on the lineup sheet which is posted near the loading table. We hope this match will be a memorable one for you, Good Luck! The Wild Turkey Posse Sherif s Department REMEMBER THAT SAFETY IS ALWAYS OUR FIRST PRIORITY. WE ARE ALL SAFETY OFFICERS. The Daily Gobbler - Page 13
