The beautiful hot and sunny day brought out 69 members and their guests. Included were our newest member, Al Saunders as well as Val Lysenko, a guest of Jack & Yupin Rice, who came all the way from Australia! Although the larger Don & Peggy Sturn than planned attendance strained the club air conditioning and food service - the meeting and day were very enjoyable. Ten Corvettes took to the road after the meeting for a quick jaunt to the Bagnell Dam Strip for ice Grandpa's cream at Grandpa's. Great ending to a beautiful day in our beautiful cars! We had another stellar turnout in August at Mexicali Blues Shine n' Show with 19 members' cars gracing the parking lot at another great night of food, grog and a real mix of great cars. The great weather continued the next day for the Hannibal Corvette Show where 16 club cars made the easy ride to this quaint little town. LOCC members took home 9 Awards including 4 First Place and 5 Best of the Rest Awards. Photos of some of the lucky winners are included on page 5. The August 9th Hot Summer Nights event was sparsely attended by club members with only 10 cars attending. Thanks to the Cone Army of volunteers who took the time and made the effort to hold 24 parking places. I think that next year's officers need to take a long, hard look at our continued financial support and participation in next year's Host Summer Night program as member interest is not reflected in attendance. Members are encouraged to register and participate in the September 6-7th Fall Follies in Laurie as the Club Participation Award is $200 and we should be able to win it - please ensure you enter your LOCC affiliation on your registration card. Members are reminded of the next meeting on September 15th at the Sycamore Creek Golf Club for our annual pot-luck luncheon. More info to follow via . 2 LOCC Secretary Report Couldn t make it to the meeting? Well, here is what you missed (and what you were volunteered for)... The August meeting of the Lake of the Ozarks Corvette Club was held on August 11, 2013, at Tan Tara A Oaks Golf Club. President, Don Sturn, opened the meeting at 12:35pm by thanking the restaurant staff. Al Saunders, our newest member, was introduced & welcomed. Al has one Corvette in Camdenton and one in Florida where he holds another Corvette club membership. Members introduced themselves, their cars, and a guest Val Lysenko - visiting the Rices from Australia. Don noted that three founding members, Parker & Mary Beth Darr and Larry Lembach, were seated together and the club recognized them. Officer reports: Vice president, Gary Cooper: Gary, who returned from Colorado to attend the meeting, reported that we now have 158 members an increase of 4 from last month. Secretary, Sue Rosenthal: Don asked us to think sunny, warm, and pleasant. It worked! We had 69 members and guests in attendance and a lineup of 36 glistening Corvettes. (Thank you Peggy for counting.) Don emphasized that all members are welcome and encouraged to attend monthly gatherings. However, only 52 members responded affirmatively to his call for a head count. When more appear it is difficult for the restaurant to provide appropriate amounts of food. Please respond to Don s RSVP s, Newsletter co-editor, Steve Swanson: There were no winners in the 60 Years of Corvettes, Corvette Quiz. Correct answers were: A,A,A,A. Treasurer, Marlon Hammond: Beginning 6/28/2013 $2, Deposits Disbursements Ending 7/31/13 $2, NCM ambassador, Denny Pennington: Work has begun on the Museum race track. No recalls or service bulletins have been reported. The 2014 Vettes are due out on September 15. The original date was revised due to 3 setbacks relating to the engine, transmission, and selective ride. One former LOCC member, Steve Rukivina, has ordered his Denny suggested that Reliable Chevrolet may be the best source if anyone is considering a purchase as they have sold enough Corvettes in the past year to qualify to fulfill orders. Don t forget to wear your name tag to LOCC functions. Because the size of our club has grown, and with all the new faces, the name tags are a great help! Thanks! LOCC Secretary Report - continued Goodwill ambassador, Craig Beach: Craig highlighted 2 upcoming events. September 13. Vettes and Jets on the LEX Caravan in Sugarland, TX. More information on this event can be found on our website: September 7& 8. Fall Follies on the Laurie fair grounds. This is an excellent park venue where we can spread out in the shade, enjoy the company of others, see cars and trucks of all types, and enjoy the many concessions and extras this show has to offer. Being a local show, members are encouraged to participate so that we can compete for the $200 Club Participation Award. Entry forms can be obtained from Craig Beach or from our website Event Highlights: August 1st Mexicali Blues Shine n Show. LOCC had a super turn out of 19 cars for a great evening of food and comraderie. August 3 rd Hannibal Corvette Show. 16 Club Corvettes caravanned to the Mayberry-like town of Hannibal where 130 cars lined quaint Main Street on a sunny Saturday morning. Competition was stiff, but LOCC cars were sparkling and won 9 awards. First Place winners: Don Bates C2 Convertible, Eric & Sue Rosenthal C6 Convertible (stock), Don & Peggy Sturn C6 Convertible (modified), Bob & Sue Matula Best Anniversary Edition. Best of the Rest winners: Randy Gross Z06, Gary Markus C6 Coupe, Craig & Nancy Beach (C6 Convertible, and Bob & Sue Matula C6 Convertible. August 9 th Hot Summer Nights. LOCC was represented by only 10 cars. Don opined that next year s board may wish to examine our support of this event as Club interest seems to be waning. Don thanked Jim Allen, the Beachs and other volunteers who went early and saved parking spots. Upcoming Events: 9/1 Mexicali Blues Shine n Show starting at 5:00. 20% off the price of food if you bring your car. 9/6 Last Hot Summer Nights. Come early as reserved spaces are released at 6:00 if not occupied. 9/7-8 Fall Follies, Laurie Fairgrounds, Laurie, MO - pre-register by 26 August 13 for $25. 9/15 LOCC Sycamore Creek Golf Club. Bob and Betty Gobel are the organizers of this event and order the meats. The rest of the meal is pot luck, so members will be asked to provide a dish and to let Bob and Betty know what it will be. An with details will be forthcoming. 10/3-6 Eureka Springs Corvette Weekend. To date 8 members have reserved rooms at the Lodge. 3 Secretary's Report - continued There was no new business. Debbie Linnemann won $83.00 in the 50/50 drawing and will sell tickets at the next meeting. Birthdays and anniversaries were recognized. Steve Swanson announced that Craig Beach (much to Craig's surprise!) would lead a group of interested parties to Grandpa s on the Strip for ice cream following the meeting. Those celebrating 50 or more years of marriage were asked to gather in the parking lot to have their pictures taken with Ivano Comelli's 50 Year Anniversary Corvette. The next meeting will be on September 15th at Sycamore Creek Golf Club. There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 1:05pm. August 1, 2013 Congratulations Debbie! This casual get together is for all kinds of car enthusiasts, and gives you the opportunity to shine your Corvette, show it off in the parking lot, while enjoying some great Mexican food and fellowship with others. Hannibal's quaint surroundings provided an excellent venue for a car show. LOCC members who attended the show enjoyed the history of the town while participating in the judged show. 6 Jere Leif, Engineer Tenneco Inc. Seward, NE Hot Summer Nights once again brought out car enthusiasts from all around the area and beyond. A perfect example of this is Mr. Jere Leif, Engineer with Tenneco Inc. in Seward, NE. After noticing Jere's interest in Corvette exhausts, we struck up a conversation with him and discovered that his company makes exhausts for GM and Corvette. Jere has worked for Tenneco Inc. as an Engineer for over 40 years. The plant was built in Seward in 1972 and Jere was the 18th employee to be hired. Back then, the company's name was Walker Mufflers and was only an aftermarket muffler and pipe replacement parts builder and distribution center for the Western half of the US. The plant started out with 150 employees. In the mid 80's the Stainless Steel material was introduced to the world of exhaust and the life of the product more or less drove the aftermarket product to a very slow demand. So Tenneco introduced new products to the big three auto makers and the plant changed from aftermarket to the OE side of business that it is today. There are over 750 employees today and the work load is extremely heavy for the Seward plant. The suppliers that are served have grown from the Big Three (GM, Ford, Chrysler) to companies like Caterpillar, John Deere and International Truck. The Corvette mufflers built in Seward are shipped to the sister plant in Smithville, TN where the muffler is placed into the final assemblies and then shipped to Bowling Green. Jere and his wife Janet purchased a 1977 L82 Corvette back in 1989 and owned it for 10 years. Their three children enjoyed using it for high school functions and weddings. It was Red on Red and had only 42k miles on it when they decided to sell. They have been coming to their home on the Little Niangua arm of the lake for 15 years and enjoy the quiet area with their grown families. The next (and last) Hot Summer Nights is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 6th. See you there. A real billboard message. My other car is a Porsche, but today I'm in a hurry! August 9, 2013 Amen.. Dave and Donna Field attended "Wheels of the Road" Route 66 Car Show in Joplin, MO where they received an award called the "Top Twenty Award". The meeting at The Oaks Golf Club in Tan Tara turned out to be one of the largest attended meetings. The weather was beautiful and the parking lot at the lodge never looked so good. During the meeting, wedding anniversaries were recognized and it was decided that after the meeting a picture was in order for those couples celebrating 50+ years of marriage.
