5 This is my first annual report as President of Swimming Tasmania, covering the period from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2011, and the year has certainly been eventful. The year has seen many changes both to the Board and the office staff of Swimming Tasmania. At Board level Karyn Burgess and Michael Lane both relocated interstate, Anne Steele decided not to renominate and Robert Kingsley resigned. Scott Curran, Scott Lucas, Glenn Moore and Ronald Brown joined myself, Glenise Gale and Russell Goonan on the Board. Sandra Krueger, our Administration Officer, departed in April and this was followed by our General Manager Jamie McIntyre leaving in late June. I would like to thank Michael, Karyn, Anne, Robert, Sandra and Jamie for their contributions and wish them all well in the future. The new Board have been working extremely hard with a major focus on marketing. Fairbrother Pty Ltd was secured as the principal sponsor of Swimming Tasmania for 2011 to 2013 and we look forward to their continued support in the future. I would also like to acknowledge the on-going support of the State Government, through Sport and Recreation Tasmania. The Board has developed a marketing brochure, largely thanks to the efforts of Ronald Brown and Scott Curran, and is exploring further marketing opportunities and member benefits. At our last Annual Meeting Margaret Neal, Glenise Gale, Chris Wedd and Michael Greatbatch were all awarded Life Membership of Swimming Tasmania. Margaret and Glenise have both been involved in the swimming community for over 50 years, Margaret in the coaching arena and Glenise as a swimmer, administrator and official. Chris was involved as a swimmer, administrator and coach and Michael s commitment to maintaining our equipment for many years is beyond compare. They are all extremely worthy recipients of this award. Jamie s departure gave us an opportunity to re-structure our office. Mary Schiebel was appointed General Manager and we advertised for a Development Officer as development remains one of our priorities. Mary remains the one constant in our office and I would particularly like to thank her for her dedication that enables our office to run as efficiently as it does. Financially it was definitely not one of our better years. This was not helped by increases in most goods and services including pool hire and two salary separations. We have not increased our fees for several years and unfortunately we have no choice but to increase fees for the coming year. There were some excellent results at the 2010 Australian Short Course Championships and the 2011 Australian Open and Age Championships. The most outstanding performances saw Shani Burleigh selected in the Australian team for the 2011 World University Games and Alec Guerzoni s gold medal for being the first Australia in the 15 years 400m Individual Medley at the Age Championships. There were many other excellent performances with more swimmers making finals and semi-finals than we have seen for many years. Records continue to be broken and the past year has seen some long standing records surpassed. Swimming Tasmania would like to acknowledge the support of Swimming Australia and the Tasmanian Institute of Sport for their continued support of our development programs. I would like to recognise the commitment of our technical officials and volunteers for their dedication. It has been particularly pleasing to see a number of new officials on pool deck this year due to encouragement from Robert Gregg and Sandy Thomson. I thank everyone for their continued involvement and support as without you all our events would not be able to take place. Forums continue to be effective in ensuring communication and consultation on matters that impact on our sport and provide an excellent opportunity for the Board and Club representatives to talk informally. This year these have included a State forum as well and smaller forums with Club Presidents in each district. In conclusion I would also like to acknowledge the support of all our partners and look forward to the continued growth and development of our sport in the coming year. Susan Cure President General Manager s Report

6 It is with pleasure and some regret that I present my third and last report as General Manager of Swimming Tasmania. Swimming Tasmania remains one of Tasmania s leading sporting organisations. The following is a broad report of the organisation over the twelve months from 1 July The Board During the last year the Board of Directors have shown outstanding guidance in all facets of the sport and it is through their efforts that Swimming Tasmania continues to be recognised as a State and National leader in organisational governance. During 2010/2011 the Board consisted of: Susan Cure (President), Russell Goonan, Scott Curran, Scott Lucas, Glenise Gale, Glenn Moore Ronald Brown A total of eight meetings were held during the year. While there have been many changes on the board they have continued to work cohesively to ensure the strategic direction and financial management of the organisation. There has been a major focus on marketing which has seen the production of a marketing brochure. Fairbrother Pty Ltd was secured as a major sponsor for the next three years. Administration There have been some changes in the Swimming Tasmania office with our Administrative Officer, Sandra Krueger, departing in April and I departed in late June. My departure has enabled an office restructure which has seen Finance and Administration Officer Mary Schiebel appointed as General Manager and I wish her well in her new appointment. Mary has continued to provide exceptional service to the swimming community across a range of areas. This restructure will also allow for the appointment of a development officer which will see more focus on Swimming Tasmania s development program. Swimming Tasmania has continued to develop and implement appropriate policies and initiatives relating to our sport and the organisation continues to be recognised as a leader in sports administration in the State. We have continued with the concept of running club forums and this year also introduced meetings with club presidents in each region in an effort to improve consultation and communication. Swimming Tasmania has a strong representation at National level and we have also continued to recognised and respected as a leader within the National swimming fraternity. Volunteers Once again without our dedicated team of volunteers Swimming Tasmania would not have been able to operate and I would particularly like to thank Robert Gregg and Sandy Thomson for their efforts in training and mentoring our officials. I would also like to recognise the support from Scott Lucas, Bevan Knowles and Tracy Graham in their positions of Meet Directors, Judy Moore as Assistant Meet Director and Michael Greatbatch for maintaining our pool equipment. Conclusion In closing my last report I would like to acknowledge and sincerely thank our hard working Board and staff and thank everyone for their support over the last 12 months. Finally, to all members of Swimming Tasmania I thank you all for your support over the last three years and wish the organisation continued growth and development in the future. Jamie McIntyre General Manager

7 Chief Referee s Report It has been my pleasure over many years to work with a band of officials all over the State who freely give up their time to work for the benefits of our young athletes. Unfortunately, the number of volunteers has diminished over the last twelve months. These wonderful volunteers who turn up week after week to swim meets, large and small, all over the State must be thanked for the gifts of their time, expertise and efforts. The sport would be in a very poor position without the continued effort of these people, many of whom do not have children involved in the sport at this time. We will need to encourage more people to come forward and volunteer their services. The training is not difficult and the rewards are great. It is an excellent way to make many new friends. Many Tasmanian officials were appointed to Australian Championships over the past twelve months. Special congratulations must go to Daryl Jacobs who has now attained the highest level as a Referee in Australia. He had previously reached this level as a Starter. Special thanks go to Scott Lucas, Bevan Knowles, Tracey Graham and Sandy Thomson who have so expertly looked after swim meets at a regional level. They could not have carried out these tasks without the assistance of many other people. I must thank Jamie, Mary and Sandra for the wonderful support they have continued to give me during this year. I encourage all officials to continue their involvement and undertake further training. I would like to see many more volunteers come out of the stands to train to officiate, and to enjoy this fantastic sport. Robert Gregg Chief Referee VALE - Don Hart Don Hart first became involved in swimming when his adopted daughter started in the sport in the early 1960 s. He became a member of the Clarence Swimming Club assisting with learn-toswim and was awarded life membership for his services. Much later he joined the Lindisfarne Swimming Club (now Eastern Shore Sharks) where he became President. From the start he joined the ranks of technical officials where for many years he was our starter. In one incident at the Glenorchy Pool in the 1970 s he was the starter at the National Age Championships when he had to use a handkerchief to cover the starting gun as it was raining so much that the gun wouldn t operate correctly because it was so wet. Don was Manager of numerous State teams including those attending National Championships and swim meets in Fiji. For his services to our sport he was awarded Life Membership of Swimming Tasmania in May he rest in peace TASMANIAN INSTITUTION OF SPORT SQUAD Gold
