Positive Coaching Alliance 58

T-Ball Player Development Basic concept of positions Basic concept of running bases - leads to run through 1B and start & stop at 2B & 3B How to hold the bat and where to stand Consistently hitting ball off a tee - leads to comfort & attempt at hitting a coach front toss (pitched) ball Basic stance/motion of throwing a ball - leads to ability to generate some evolving distance & accuracy Comfort and attempt at fielding a ground ball and/or catching a thrown/hit ball Object of the game (hits and outs) Get them back again next year! 59

Farm Player Development Solid understanding of positions Ability to hit a pitched ball Ability to throw & catch a ball; able to play catch Understanding of running the bases & making outs (at risk) Understanding of making tag & forceouts in the field Advanced players: catching a fly ball Foster the love of the game! 60

Minors Player Development Finally baseball! A whole new ballgame... Biggest jump from one year to the next (plus, lots of practices) Understanding and respect for success & failure (hits & outs), scores & standings (PARENTS more so!).umpires! Ability to throw & catch a ball across the diamond - including some pitching Fly balls! Relays (completing multiple throw/catch attempts) Ability to hit a pitched ball - both machine & kid pitched Advanced understanding of the rules, running the bases (at risk running; stealing) and making outs (prioritization of outs) Introduction and refinement of mechanics of pitching & hitting THE make or break year 61

Int s & Majors Player Development Advancing skills in throwing, catching, fielding, hitting Detailed mechanics including footwork, glovework, identifying incoming pitches Mental aspect of the game - movement, rotations, backups, thinking ahead Specialized coaching of positions; players will play many Learning of visual and verbal signs Understanding & development of situational baseball & "executing" (outs can be a good thing) Catchers blocking balls, fielders making plays NOTE: this is NOT calling out learning/commanding of pitches 62

Field Maintenance TOPLINE: PVLL is very proud of our facilities & fields - best fields on the Hill and arguably in South Bay Have invested significant money into them this off-season Preach pride and respect for fields/facilities to your parents & players Designate TWO parents for field duty Home & Visiting Teams (when PVLL v. PVLL) share ALL duties Always keep shed clean and organized - ready for the next teams Water is a field's best friend! 65

Field Maintenance PRE-GAME/PRACTICE: Field will be groomed when you arrive - may need a quick drag Generously water infield skin and base paths; lightly moisten mound & batter boxes Insert bases, store all three plugs Remove mound & boxes tarps fold, lift and place into shed (NOT in dugouts or foul territory) don t DRAG the tarps off the mound or box area. Chalk the lines & boxes Infield apron screen must be used at all practice 66

Field Maintenance POST-GAME/PRACTICE: Remove bases & insert base plugs into anchors Rake or broom any loose dirt off of grass (outfield, infield, mound, base paths, boxes) Drag all skinned areas of infield keeping drag 12 away from turf. Rake basepaths PARALLEL to path, level & redistribute with back of broom Water infield skin and base paths (heavy if last game/practice, lighter if middle of Saturday) - remember, they're best friends LIGHTLY water mound & boxes after grooming - special instructions Place tarps on mound & boxes Field should always be ready for next use 67

Field Maintenance MOUND REPAIR (post-game/practice): Sweep loose material/conditioner from the landing area and top of the mound, allowing the hard ground to be exposed (the landing area is the place where the pitcher land with his lead foot) Lightly moisten the exposed hard ground and the loose material to ensure the dirt will bind when packed back in the holes - let it set and absorb for few minutes Add new clay into depressions Tamp this loose clay into the ground Rake down the newly repaired areas as well as the rest of the mound - recovering with conditioner. Remove old clay chunks and throw away. Lightly water the mound - now game ready Cover mound with tarp to maintain a proper moisture level 68

Field Maintenance BATTERS/CATCHERS BOXES REPAIR (post-game/practice): Sweep loose material/conditioner from the batters and catchers boxes, allowing the hard ground to be exposed Lightly moisten the exposed hard ground and the loose material to ensure the dirt will bind when packed back in the holes - let it set and absorb for few minutes Place new clay into depressions. Tamp this loose clay into the ground Rake down the newly repaired areas as well as the rest of the home plate circle - recovering with conditioner. Discard old chunks. Lightly water the boxes - now game ready Cover area with tarp to maintain a proper moisture level 69
