M R. SCOTT LANDS PRIN C I PA L ' S JOB Mr. Jim Scott will be will be serving as Lockwood High School principal for the school year. He replaces Mr. Clay Lasater who has been promoted to Lockwood Schools superintendent. Mr. Scott, a 1993 graduate of Golden City High School, received his Bachelor s of Science in Education from the University of Missouri in Columbia, and his Master s in Education Administration from William Woods University. Mr. Scott has 19 years teaching experience (16 years in a social studies classroom sandwiched around three years in a middle school science classroom). Mr. Scott has served the Lockwood school district for the past eight years, currently as the middle school social studies teacher and high school golf coach. Mr. Scott and his wife Sarah, a Lockwood native, live in the rural Lockwood area with their B Y W ILL B E E R L Y Future Lockwood Principal Mr. Scott (Left) with his family. daughter Lyla and son Hayes. Lyla is a kindergarten student at Lockwood, and Hayes will start Little Paws at Lockwood in the fall. Scott said this about his new job, "I care deeply about our community, school district, and most importantly, the success of our students, and am very excited about working with our dedicated staff to build on the strong tradition of student success we have here at Lockwood." Freshly Squeezed On Tuesday, March 7th, Ozark Community Health Center held a blood drive at Lockwood High School. FCCLA was in charge of the blood drive and their sponsor, Mrs. Wilson, said this about the drive, I was happy to see the turnout; numbers seem to be up from past blood drives. She was correct in this statement. 30 people came to give blood, and 22 pints were collected. Senior donor Skylar Neil said this about giving blood, It feels good to give back to those who need it more than I do.

2 Page 2 Volume 6, Issue 6 The War Is On By Tyler Aldridge Penny Wars is an FCCLA event where students collect pennies and dollars where one penny equals one point and one dollar equals one hundred points, but any other coin will lose you points. The winner will have to kiss a pig, but they will also be able to throw a pie at a teacher. The money FCCLA raises will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. New Bells Take Stage By Tyler Aldridge The path to the future is paved by us. A new bell system was put into use on March 20th, The old bells were 40 to 50 years old, so it was time for an upgrade. The new bells are easier to program, meaning there is less chance of a bell being off by daylight savings time. These new additions to the school will make time management easier. Senior Feature: Karson Bruner Senior Karson Bruner Karson Bruner is the subject of the Tiger Tribune s Senior Feature. Karson is 17 years old and has attended Lockwood all of his life. Karson s birthday is June 6th, His parents are Stacy and Eric Bruner. His mother works as the technology director for Lockwood schools. When asked about where his father worked, Bruner replied that it was somewhere in Springfield. Karson enjoys giving interviews, taking interviews, and answering questions. How ironic. He also did mention he enjoys fishing and hunting, especially for coyotes. That's a little bit about Karson Mackenzie Bruner, a member of the 2017 Lockwood graduating class. Free But Guilty Hayden Vaughn after being declared innocent On the day of March 7, 2017, the jury for the mock trial assignment in Mrs. Jones s class found the accused Hayden Cole Vaughn innocent on all charges. Many think it is because the lack of evidence, although some blamed the result on the inexperience of the prosecution. In an interview with Vaughn after the trial ended., I asked him how it felt to be a free man, and he replied with, [It] feels great, especially knowing that I did it. Nothing makes you more proud than getting away with something you actually did. When asked how it felt to get away with murder, Vaughn replied with, I feel pretty smart. He, of course, admitted to the crime after the trial was over because he cannot not be charged again due to the double jeopardy law. Be careful Lockwood, a murderer is back on the streets.

3 The Tiger Tribune Page 3 Sports Section Softball Preview The Lockwood softball girls are excited for the upcoming season, at least head coach Donald Borchardt is. I sat down and talked with him about the upcoming season. When asked about how he feels this season is going to go, Coach Borchardt replied with, I m looking forward to it; my girls have played together for a long time, and we have a chance to improve upon last season. He says he predicts his softball girls will improve greatly on fundamentals and position play, as well as working together as a team. Coach Borchardt added that they got a new bat, which has already helped their hitting out a bunch Lady Tigers Fall On Tuesday, the 18th of April, the Tiger softball team hosted the College Heights Cougars. With both schools being in the Spring River Valley Conference, this was an important matchup. Rene Jenkins took the mound for the Tigers. She was bound and determined to go the distance and pitched the entire game. She racked up 132 pitches doing so. Her valiant efforts did not prove to be enough as the Tigers, who never really got the bats going, fell by a score of The Tigers will look to bounce back on Tuesday, the 25th, as the rival Greenfield Wildcats come to town. Hot out of the Blocks On Thursday, March 23rd, the track season took off in the right direction for the Tigers. The team traveled to Stockton to begin the season. With most key athletes returning on both the boys and girls side, there was definitely reason for optimism. There was one thing that you hate to see at any athletic event, injuries. The Tiger track team suffered a couple costly ones, with Brady Oeltjen (foot) and Josh Osterdyk (hamstring) getting hurt in the meet. There currently isn t a timetable for their return. After all was said and done, neither the boys or girls finished at the top of the leaderboard, but both found positives to run with the rest of the season. The team will head to Archie next Tuesday, the 28th. Run fast, turn left Tigers! Lockwood battles Dadeville in Regular Season Opener On Monday, March 27, the Lockwood Tigers boys baseball team travelled to Dadeville to play the first regular season game of the Tigers season. The Tigers came out ready to play it seemed. Around the 5th and 6th inning, it seemed as if the Tigers were going to run rule the Bearcats. The rule is a team must be up 10 runs after five innings, and the Tigers were nine points away from that..-continued on Page 4

4 Page 4 Volume 6, Issue 6 Continued from Page 3 But, the Bearcats had other plans and wanted to play a full 7 innings, and they did. The final score ended up being 13-2, with the Lockwood Tigers on top. Senior Will Beerly had this to say about the victory, It was a good win. It was nice to see this group close a game like I know they can. It was a good start to what seems to be a promising season for the Lockwood Tigers. Lockwood vs. Bronaugh The Lockwood Tigers travelled to Bronaugh on Friday, April 7th, for a non conference baseball game. The Tigers came to play, and the Wildcats did not. Roy Snider pitched four innings and didn't allow a single hit but was then pulled before the 5th inning. Brayden Brummett finished the game and also allowed no hits, so the duo had a no hitter combined. The Tigers bats came alive as the final score showed. The Tigers came out on top with a 19-0 victory over the Bronaugh Wildcats. The Tigers will play the Lamar Tigers at home on Monday, April 10th. Battle of the Tigers On Monday, April 10th, the Lamar Tigers travelled to Lockwood to face the Lockwood Tigers. These teams had played each other previously in the season in the Lamar tournament. The Lamar Tigers run ruled the Lockwood Tigers in that game. But, it seems the Lockwood Tigers have gotten much better since that game, much better indeed. The Tigers had their number one pitcher in, Justin Nentrup, who threw six innings and was relieved in the 7th by senior pitcher Will Beerly. Beerly sealed the game for the Tigers. The final score was 5-4, with the Lockwood Tigers on top. The Tigers next big game will be Friday, April 14th, at Diamond High School. Lockwood s Golf Team Shows Well On Monday, April 10th, Lockwood headed to Springfield to compete in a tournament hosted by the Logan-Rogersville Wildcats. Springfield Golf and Country Club served as the host site. The Tiger team was placed in the JV portion of the tournament. They placed well in their division with a second place team finish. Senior Will Beerly, finished first as an individual with a score of 78, in which he collected five birdies. HIs score was the third best submitted in both the Varsity and JV divisions. Coach Scott said this about his team, These guys continue to impress me with the way they conduct themselves on the golf course. Not only did they manage to take 22 strokes off their score from the previous tournament, they also represented our school in a manner that is noticed, and commented on, by tournament officials and coaches from other districts.

5 Opinion Capitol Punishment: What's the Real Cost? See what the Tiger Tribune staff have to say about a variety of topics in our opinion section. Find editions at lockwoodschools.org! In the coming months, the state of Arkansas plans to execute eight people in the span of 10 days. In April of 2014, Clayton Lockett laid on an execution table in Oklahoma for close to an hour before finally expiring, a scene witnesses called chaotic. All this leads me to a thought: does capital punishment still coincide with modern American values? This is a popular debate in this country and has been for quite a few years now. The death penalty is legal in 32 states and still applied often. Is this the correct punishment for the most serious offenders? Does it reflect what the United States stands for? Some believe that this is the most severe punishment the legal system can dish out. I do not agree. I believe that serving the remainder of your life in a maximum security prison would be equally, if not more, severe. Most believe that this option would cost the taxpayers more money; this is not true. The death penalty, due to the number of appeals filed and the separate wards death row inmates have to live in, actually costs more. This statistic really drives it home for me. One in twenty-five people that are executed are innocent. Is that American? Christian McCaffrey to the Broncos Former Stanford running back Christian McCaffrey reportedly told the Denver Broncos, if he was still around when the Broncos pick came up, he wanted to play for them. The Broncos sat down in a meeting with him, and things allegedly went very well. I, in my own opinion, believe that he would be a good fit to the Denver Broncos. He's a very talented young man that looks to be promising in the next level. Plus, he has many mentors on the Broncos who can help guide and mold him into an even better player than expected. Stanford does have something the Denver Broncos don't though, and that's a good offensive line. The O-line could have played a big factor in all those yards and big plays for McCaffrey. He won't have the best blocking if he does go to the Broncos, but they are working on it, trying to pick up new guys on the line. If the Broncos figure out the O-line situation, I do believe McCaffrey should be just fine. Best of luck to him, as he will soon be in the NFL. Daylight Savings Time Many people believe that daylight savings time is not good at all, but my beliefs are much different than theirs. You see, I enjoy daylight savings because I used to not be able to fish after I got out of baseball practice. Thanks to daylight savings time, I have around an hour and a half to two hours to fish. I really enjoy fishing and having light outside is a must, so I believe I have a very unique and special reason for liking daylight savings time so much. The only downfall is you have to wake up earlier than you're used to, but you soon adapt to that, and things are good again. That is why I am in favor of daylight savings time.
