11 BEHIND THE SCENES RICK GRIFFIN Head Athletic Trainer Rick Griffin is in his 27th season as only the second trainer in Mariners history. On April 24, 2008, Rick worked his 4,000th regularseason game with the Mariners; he s missed only six in his 26 years with the club. He begins the year having worked 4,136 regular-season games, and all 34 post-season games. Prior to joining the team on February 3, 1983, he worked as a full-time trainer at the Sports Medicine Clinic in Seattle. A native of Brigham City, Utah, Rick earned a B.S. from Utah State in health education and followed with a M.S. from the University of Oregon. His baseball background includes four years ( ) as a trainer with the then Cincinnati Reds affiliate Eugene Emeralds of the Northwest League. Also in Eugene, he served as an instructor and athletic trainer at Winston Churchill High School. In 1982 toured Australia speaking on sports medicine topics. In November of 1994, 1995 & 2000, Rick went to Japan and lectured to the Japanese Baseball Athletic Trainers Society. Rick served as the American League trainer for the All-Star Game in 1987, 1995 & In December of 1989, he was elected as the AL representative of the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society, a position he held for six years. In October 1996, Rick toured Japan with a group of All-Stars that played Japanese All-Stars in a series of exhibition games. Following the 1999 season the Professional Baseball Athletic Trainers Society named Rick and his staff the Major League Baseball Athletic Training Staff of the Year. He is a member of the American College of Sports Medicine, National Athletic Trainers Society and the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He enjoys hunting, fishing, golf and providing medical coverage at professional rodeos in the off-season. ROB NODINE Assistant Athletic Trainer Rob Nodine enters his third season as an assistant trainer at the Major League level after spending 14 years in the Mariners system. Rob joined the organization in 1993 as trainer at Riverside (A). He spent four seasons as a trainer for the Mariners affiliate in the Cal League before moving to Double-A in Rob spent four years ( ) as the Double-A trainer and was the trainer for the West Division Team in the 2001 Texas League All-Star Game. He moved to AAA Tacoma in Rob received his B.S. degree in Athletic Training from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas in He worked as a trainer for the baseball, football, basketball and track teams, among others, while a student at UNLV. Nodine is a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association. Rob resides in Peoria, AZ with his wife, Jennifer, and daughters McKenna and Shelby. TAKAYOSHI MORIMOTO Assistant Athletic Trainer Taka Morimoto is in his sixth season as an assistant trainer. The Kyoto, Japan, native graduated from the Kansai College of Oriental Medicine in Japan. He worked with the Orix Blue Wave as an Athletic Trainer from Taka spent the 2002 season working as a trainer with the Peoria Mariners as part of an internship before joining the Mariners in Morimoto and his wife, Kuniko, reside in Kyoto, Japan in the off-season. 25
12 TED WALSH Equipment Manager Ted Walsh enters his 31st year in professional sports and his seventh with the Mariners. Walsh is responsible for all home clubhouse operations for the team. His duties include purchasing and maintaining all club baseball equipment while attending to the day-to-day needs of the Mariners players, coaches and staff. Walsh started working in professional sports as an equipment room assistant in 1979 with the San Francisco 49ers. He became the 49ers Assistant Equipment Manager in 1986 and held that position until He was with the 49ers for all five of their Super Bowl victories. While with the 49ers, he designed and marketed the Quik Cleat tool for quickly changing the cleats on football shoes. 13 CARL HAMILTON Video Coordinator Carl Hamilton is in his 30th season with a Major League club, his 20th with the Mariners organization, all as the teams Major League video coordinator. Carl s responsibilities include recording every Mariners game and other ML games for scouting and training purposes; videotaping Major League players and pitchers during spring training and the regular season; taping minor league players at spring training; and preparing training, highlight and motivational tapes for the Mariners organization. At the 2005 Winter Meetings, the Professional Baseball Video Coordinators Association (PBVCA) unanimously voted to name an annual award for the top video coordinator after Carl, and awarded him the inaugural Carl Hamilton Award for his commitment, years of service, excellence and positive impact on the role of video coordinators in Major League Baseball. The award is given annually to the top video coordinator as voted by his peers. Prior to joining the Mariners in 1990, Carl spent 10 years with the Texas Rangers as ML video coordinator. Before his career in baseball, Carl worked as a police officer, in private security and served with the Marine Corps. Carl resides in Kent, WA, with his wife Betty Lou. They have four adult children (Kathleen, Mark, Mike and Kimberly) and seven grandchildren. His son Mike was the 2006 Carl Hamilton Award winner as video coordinator for Colorado and now works as a pro scout for the Rockies. BOB CHRISTOFFERSON Head Groundskeeper Bob Christofferson was hired July 1, 2000 as the Mariners head groundskeeper. In December, Bob received the Dedication to Baseball Award from the Washington State Baseball Coaches Association. Following the 2005 season, Bob was honored with the Harry C. Gill Memorial Award by the Sports Turf Managers Association. The award honors an individuals long-term service and commitment as well as their professional excellence. Christofferson spent 20 years prior to being hired by the Mariners as the stadium manager and head groundskeeper of Cheney Stadium for the Triple-A Tacoma franchise of the Pacific Coast League. His father, Bob, joined the original Cheney Stadium grounds crew in Christofferson was a three-time winner of the PCL Groundskeeper of the Year Award, including the first-ever award in 1992 and back-to-back honors in 1998 & 1999, despite having to battle the Northwest s fickle weather. His tenure included overseeing the Goodwill Games competition when Cheney Stadium was host to 24 games in six days, the world fastpitch softball championship in 1980 and numerous state high school playoffs. Bob graduated from Stadium HS in Tacoma and Central Washington University, where he played baseball. He was a social studies teacher and varsity baseball coach at Foss HS from Christofferson and his wife, Cyndy, reside in Puyallup with their two children: Tyler and Lauren.
