Faculty Advisor Mrs. Dalleska We Add Up Survey By: Makaila R, Sara L, and Sydney L Volume 4 No. 9 We went to some of the first period activity classes and surveyed them asking what We Add Up t-shirt they would want to buy. The options were hybrid, lights off, bike, wind, drink tap, recycle, demand change, switch, unplug, eat less meat and other. The students were asked to pick two. The results are: We Add Up Survey Hybrid Lights Off Bike Wind Drink Tap Recycle Demand Change Switch Unplug Eat Less Meat Other Thanks to the students and teachers that took time away from their work to take the survey!!

2 Sixth Grade Inquiry Project Makaila R. Sixth graders have been working on their inquiry projects, since winter break. Topics ranged from cities, to people, to animals and all the way to electronics. Students have worked hard to create the final product, which is a magazine on their research topic. When the Greenwood-West and Briggs-Pence/Rosenson teams got back from winter break, they began their study. A month later, when those two teams finished inquiry, the Severson-Schumacher and Wolfe-Brauer teams started. They recently published their magazines. What do the students think about inquiry?? Sixth grader, Sara L says, I think that inquiry was difficult, but I had fun with it and it was a good learning experience. Another sixth grader, Sydney L says, It was a lot of work, but it paid off in the end. Jack S thinks that, Inquiry was hard, but fun. Good luck to next year s sixth graders. Opinions of inquiry vary. Some students enjoyed it and some students thought it was extremely hard, but every student learned a great deal of information. 2

3 10,000 B.C. Mishaps The first thing I saw was they all have white teeth when they always chew on meat. Next, I saw that in a part where they try to get a mammoth, a certain person gets stuck on the net and really he is just holding on. If you look real close at certain people they have gum in their mouth. Who Is Steve Spangler? Steve Spangler is an author, professional speaker, Emmy Award winner, science teacher, founder of two companies, toy maker, and a trained magician. His most famous experiment that is very popular is dropping a Mentos into a bottle of Diet Coke, with the result of a huge explosion of Diet Coke. When he was a science teacher at an elementary school, he first tried Life Savers instead of Mentos. After he tried the Mentos, his experiment was shown in web casts all around the world. He 3

4 has appeared in over 240 television shows and has been watched by over 1 million viewers. He has all sorts of funky and cool science experiments! They are great for all ages whether you want to try an experiment for your own pleasure or having to do one for school. They all are easy to use and with materials that you would probably have around your house. Steve has written blogs about most of his experiments and you should check out his website to learn more about him! Go to HAVE CELL PHONES TAKEN OVER? Ask your grandparents, ask your parents, even ask a much older sibling ask them if they had cell phones when they were kids. The answer would be no. When there s a trend, things can sometimes get crazy. It may have started with car phones. It may have started with pagers, but one thing is certain: cell phones have taken over. In the past two decades cell phones have hit their invasion on Earth. Almost every one has one. It may have been the need to reach someone when they re not home. It also may have escalated by one person getting one and another person wanting one. Today, cell phones are much different than they used to be. There are phones with a touch screen, such as the newer phone the iphone. The top cell phone right now is the RIM Blackberry Pearl. Cell phones are an enormous help to our society today. They are great during emergencies when you are not home. Also, if you are stuck in an elevator or are lost you can just pull out your cell phone and call someone to come help you. If you are a kid and are lost you can call your parents. Cell phones are perfect to help clarify plans when you re not home. Plus with a cell phone you don t have to wait in a long line to call someone on a gooey airport pay phone, when your flight is delayed. Cell phones sure do help in situations and are a vital piece of technology in our society. 4

5 Clowns Blessing or Curse? Clowns are people dressed in weird suits and made to make people laugh. Sadly, some people suffer a fear of them and never want to see one. Some people say that their red noses are the reason why they are scary. However, some people like clowns and think they are good entertainers to kids. Some people are so scared of clowns that people make movies about it like IT and Killer Clowns. So, is the clown a blessing or curse? No one knows. To Eat Meat or Not to Eat Meat...That is the Question By Zoe M. Veg*ns are vegans or vegetarians. Vegetarians don t eat meat, and vegans don t eat any animal products. There s an interesting debate raging between the veg*ns and the meateaters. Veg*ns claim thry don t criticize meat-eaters, but people who eat meat say veg*ns do criticize. The fact is, when listing all the reasons to not eat meat, a veg*n makes the meat-eater feel like they re a bad person. In the editorial, Preach it Veggie Man, the writer says, If you want people to become veg*ns, show them that it s not so bad to be a veg*n. Feed them good veg*n food. Have fun veg*n parties. Live to be 100. It really is possible to lead a rich, satisfying meat-free life. 5

6 You know what? It s true! It is possible. But if veg*n really wantt to change the world or save the animals, they should stop discouraging others by annoying them with long lectures. Board Games What are the Sixth Graders Favorite Board Game? 10 Series S t u d e n t s Monopoly Scrabble Life Trivial Pursuit Clue Board Game I took a survey of a group of sixth graders asking what their favorite board games were. I was surprised to find the NO ONE decided to choose Trivial Pursuit. Trivial Pursuit was ranked the thirteenth best board game ever by Amazon. In 1984, over 20,000,000 copies of the game were sold. It has been sold in 26 countries and is available in 17 different languages. 6

7 2008 Cubs Predictions Who is going to start at Center Field? Most people predict Felix Pie because he has had a fantastic spring and he is speedy. Who are going to be the starting five pitchers? Our prediction is that the five starting pitchers are going to be Carlos Zambrano (Big Z), Ted Lily, Rich Hill, John Lieber, and Ryan Dempster or Jason Marquis because they proved themselves worthy for the job. What National League team will win the Pennant? Cubs- they have picked up some players in the Off Season that will help them improve their team. Mets- They ve made a trade for Johan Santana, which will very much improve their pitching staff. What number will Fukodome bat in the line-up? Either second or fifth because the 1st spot is wrapped up by Soriano. D. Lee and Aramis Ramirez take the third and fourth spots. Is Micah Hoffpauir going to make the team? We predict that he will not make the team even though he has had a great spring and he is batting over.400 because there are other players who play first base but we re sure he ll get invited to come to the team during the regular season. Who will win the World Series? WHAT CUBS FAN WOULDN T SAY, THE CUBS!!! 7

9 THE NIGHT AT WRIGLEY FIELD Billy cowered in fear, shrinking back into the corner of the closet. Who was it tht had freed him from his small prison? He pushed himself to his feet and began his way to the doorway. Not a soul was there. He was met by smotherng silence and darkness so thick that at first he didn t know if his eyes were open. Eventually they began to adjust. Hello? Is anyone there? No one responded to Billy s inquiry. It didn t look like anyone was there. But then who had opened the closet? CRACK! Billy heard a large boom that sounded like a ball hitting a bat. It couldn t be daytime with a new game about to start, could it? No, it was still dark. Billy walked towards the field, down the rows and rows of seats. The sight before him was the most shocking thing he had ever seen. Hey, Babe nice hit. Mickey Mantle said. Billy rubbed his eyes. All the famous baseball players before him were dead. Jackie Robinson, the first African American professional player was there. Lou Gehrig, the famous Yankee player, was also there. Playing in the field was Hank aaron, the player with the most home runs 755 home runs. It looked as if the players were playing a ghostly game of play. Comin through! Billy turned around to meet the eyes of an irritible, rather large baseball player. Billy tried to sidestep him but it was too late. The burly player marched straight ahead, right through Billy. This was weird. Unnatural. Horrible! Billy sat back to enjoy the game. Being stranded in a baseball stadium at midnight could be worse. It was a great game! Come on, Babe Ruth, hit a homerun. Billy shouted. The pitch was thrown, and CRACK! Babe Ruth hit another home run. It soared way out of the stadium. The players cheered. Billy did also. Hey kid, wanna play? Mickey Mantle called to Billy. 9
