In the two opening weekends of WAC play, Wyatt logged threehit performances in the last two games of the series. He s 15-for-31 (.484) in conference games, a mark which far and away leads the WAC. The former Arizona Gatorade Player of the Year played in every infield position other than catcher during the 2016 season. This season, he s added left field to his resume. All that s left to check off is center, right and behind the plate. He has the ability to play catcher and, according to the coaching staff, it is not out of the question that he could see time if the Lopes were to find themselves in a bind. 7 LEROUGE BACK ROAMING CENTER FIELD Junior Tom Lerouge, rehabbing from an offseason injury, had been limited to roles as DH and pinch hitter early. But for the first time this year, Lerouge returned to his familiar position out in center field during the Lopes mid-week series at New Mexico on March 21-22, having now made nine of the last ten starts in center. He showed no Lerouge signs of rust with a few defensive gems. Commentators said Lerouge was breaking the hearts of Lobos fans with some of his defensive efforts. Since returning to center field defensively, the bat has come around too as Lerouge is batting 11-for-31 (.355). MUMPER S BAT COMES TO LIFE Mumper Something about facing the Northern Colorado Bears, a team from Marc Mumper s home state of Colorado, really excites the sophomore shortstop. He s hit two career home runs, and they ve both come against Northern Colorado and they ve both been three-run shots -- one in 2016 and one last weekend. Mumper has claimed the everyday shortstop role for due to his defensive ability. But the bat began to round into form against the Bears as well. In the last two conference weekends, Mumper is 6-for-19 (.316) with three doubles, a home run and five RBIs, slugging.632. On the advice coaches have given him after earning shortstop role: Have a lot of confidence and have some fun. Go out there and show what ability I have. GETTING GCU OFF THE SCHNEID Freshman Jack Schneider made his debut as a starting pitcher in GCU s victory over New Mexico on March 22. Schneider and the rest of the Lopes pitching staff limited New Mexico to one run on four hits and helped end a five-game skid. He s now made three straight Sunday starts in WAC play, and has picked up three straight victories. Picking Schneider up his first collegiate win in just his third ever appearance, Schneider became the quickest GCU pitcher to win a game since Jake Repavich won his second appearance in Schneider: It s great to pitch on the weekends. Chicago State is off to its best start in conference play since joining the Western Athletic Conference, going 3-3 through its first two conference series. The Cougars began the year with a series win over Seattle U before dropping two of three to CSU Bakersfield last weekend. The Cougars have posted non-conference wins over Northern Illinois, Fort Wayne and Eastern Kentucky. The three-game set ends a 10-game homestand for Chicago State, although playing at home hasn t been kind to the Cougars. They are 1-9 at home with their other six wins coming on the road or at neutral sites. LAST TIME OUT While, overall, the Cougars are off to a decent start in WAC play, the last two games have not been kind to them. In mid-week action, Chicago State fell to Milwaukee of the Horizon League 15-1, while ending last weekend s WAC series with a 12-1 loss to CSU Bakersfield. The Cougars dropped the opener and finale at home to the Roadrunners, while winning the middle game of the series 8-4. PLAYERS TO WATCH A pair of Cougars, Matt Sullivan and Matt Paviello, pace the club in batting average at.314 and.310, respectively. Paciello has driven in a team-leading 22 RBIs with 11 extra-base hits. Rick Salazar, despite hitting just.185 on the season, leads Chicago State with three home runs on the season. 8 STANKIEWICZ TO LEAD USA BASEBALL 18U NATIONAL TEAM EVANS MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPACT USA Baseball named its U National Team staff on Feb. 22, highlighted by naming Andy Stankiewicz as manager. The national team will compete in the World Baseball Confederation World Cup in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada from September Stankiewicz returns to the 18U National Team after leading the U.S. to a gold medal in It didn t take long for Lopes fans to learn the name of one of the newest members of the squad in junior transfer Ian Evans. He has started all but one game at first base this season. Evans is batting.307 with 19 RBIs. Additionally, he delivered a walk-off single in the team s series finale defeat of San Francisco on March 12. Against Northern Colorado, Evans Evans put together a two-double performance in GCU s mercy-rule victory in the finale. He recorded three hits in GCU s loss to No. 7 Arizona on April 11. SCHWARTZ TABBED WAC PRESEASON PLAYER OF THE YEAR Schwartz Malis It s becoming a tradition at, and its one that the Lopes wouldn t be opposed to seeing continue. For the second straight season, the WAC pick for Preseason Player of the Year wears a Grand Canyon uniform, this year coming in the form of junior outfielder Garrison Schwartz. Schwartz follows in Paul Panaccione s footsteps, Panaccione being the 2016 Player of the Year before being selected by the Washington Nationals in the 10th Round of last year s draft. Joining Schwartz as a part of the All-WAC preseason recognition was sophomore infielder Zach Malis, who was named to the conference s first team as an at-large selection. was picked to finish fourth by the conference s coaches, narrowly behind third-place Sacramento State. THE MAJOR LEAGUE EXPERIENCE GCU had the remarkable experience of going toe-to-toe with the hometown big league club, the Arizona Diamondbacks, on Feb. 22. While the Lopes fell 9-1, it was less about the result and more about the experience for the student-athletes. Freshman Tyler Hansen made his (albeit unofficial) collegiate pitching debut facing A.J. Pollock, Brandon Drury, Paul Goldschmidt and Jake Lamb. He didn t do too bad either. Hansen went 2.0 innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs and one walk. He s from Snowflake, Arizona. He hadn t ever seen this before, head coach Andy Stankiewicz said with a chuckle. He was great. We said, don t be fearful. I m sure emotions were running a little high for him, but he did a great job. NEWS, NOTES, & NUMBERS 8 TOPPLING A TOP 25 TEAM The Lopes series victory over No. 22 Oklahoma State marked the first win over a top-25 opponent since the Lopes defeated No. 21 Texas Tech in two games on April 28-29, GCU s only encounter with a top-25 opponent last season was No. 19 Houston. The Lopes will play two games each against Arizona and Arkansas, both clubs who are currently receiving top-25 recognition in all major polls. A RE-SHAPED INFIELD The Lopes certainly have confidence in their personnel in the infield. Why wouldn t they with two returning All-WAC selections? However, that same personnel will assume new positions in the infield in Zach Malis is set to make the move from corner-to-corner, taking over the hot corner after a successful year at first base. Austin Bull has seen time in both middle infield spots after spending his freshman season exclusively at second base. Ian Evans, a junior college transfer, has locked down his role as first baseman. Marc Mumper has emerged as a favorite at shortstop and has proven capable of the role defensively CONFERENCE S YOUNGEST TEAM With freshmen and sophomores accounting for nearly 70 percent of s at bats on the season, the Lopes were far and away the youngest offense in the Western Athletic Conference. Shotgun Spratling labeled a team to keep an eye on and spelled out the ideal scenario for GCU s season: Ideally this season would be a precursor that helps lead to a regional host in their new digs next year. STANKIEWICZ EXTENDED THROUGH 2019 In a set of major athletic department announcements on May 27, 2015, University announced a four-year contract extension for head coach Andy Stankiewicz, just weeks after claiming the 2015 WAC regular season title. I m appreciative to what (President) Mueller and his team have done, Stankiewicz said. I m appreciative to Mike Vaught Stankiewicz and Keith Baker. When I was offered a contract extension, I was excited about it is when we re postseason eligible, and in 2018 we re going to make some noise. Jerry Colangelo, a Valley Sports icon and special advisor to GCU Athletics, further explained the move. I spent 45 years in professional sports, and I had a habit of tearing up contracts, Colangelo said. The reason I did things like that was, I truly believed, that someone did such a job over expectations, they were entitled to more. (Stankiewicz) has done an incredible job at with the baseball program. It s a new four-year contract to reward him for a job well done. Stankiewicz s old contract originally ran through the 2017 season, but, following the extension, now runs through the 2019 season LEROUGE S KNACK FOR THE CLUTCH In an all-around impressive sophomore campaign, Tom Lerouge exhibited his ability to come up with the clutch base hit when needed on multiple occasions throughout the year. In a span of two weeks, Lerouge managed three game-winning hits. Lerouge First, Lerouge uncorked a walk-off double in a March 13 contest against Cal Poly to claim the rubber game. In Las Vegas on March 22, Lerouge broke a ninth-inning tie with a go-ahead single down the left field line as GCU went on to defeat UNLV. Back home two days later, Lerouge opened conference play by delivering a walk-off single in the 11th inning as the Lopes downed Utah Valley. NEWS, NOTES, & NUMBERS THREE OUTS. ONE PLAY. The Lopes turned one of the rarest plays in the sport in a game New Mexico State on April 11, With runners on the corners and nobody out, a grounder to third base was converted into a triple play. GCU was one of just 14 teams (4.6 percent) to turn a triple play in college baseball last season. Krysthian Leal collected a ground ball near third and threw to Austin Bull at second base to retire the first runner. Bull threw over to Zach Malis at first base to retire the batter. Meanwhile, the runner from third attempted to score, with a throw from Malis to Griffin Barnes at the plate coming in time to complete the play. THE END OF THE BEGINNING It s here. Four years nearing completion. University Athletics is nearing final completion of the mandated four-year transition process as the department jumps to full Division I status. While the baseball program previously competed at the Division I level in the 1990s, this time around, all 21 sports at GCU are making the jump. You ve heard the disclaimer time and time again over the last four years, but amid the current transition, the Lopes are ineligible for participation in the WAC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. There, you ve heard it for the last time. Beginning in the year, pending a final stamp of approval from the NCAA, Grand Canyon will participate as a full-fledged member of NCAA Division I athletics, making it eligible for the WAC Tournament and NCAA Tournament in all sports. CONFERENCE EXPANDING While it will take about a year and a half to see the move in effect, the WAC announced the addition of California Baptist University to the conference on January 13, The Lancers will begin competition in 15 WAC-sanctioned sports in the academic year. The university continues a meteoric rise which will see it begin the transition to Division I after just five years at the Division II level. In baseball, like many of its sports, CBU has found recent success at the Division II level. However, holds a all-time lead in the series with the Lancers that dates all the way back to the 1967 season. As the conference sits today, the addition of California Baptist will bring the WAC up to 10 baseball schools (restoring the loss of North Dakota in 2016) and nine full members. 10

17 BASEBALL // NEW STADIUM FEBRUARY 2018 WHAT THEY RE SAYING Mike This looks incredible! Mid-major program w/ Omaha potential.. Postseason eligible in 18. #LookOut Aaron Big-time facility coming I agree expect big things ahead for the #Lopes. Kendall Outstanding commitment The facilities arms race rages on. As a part of its $1 billion campus expansion, University announced on Aug. 16, 2016 that it will complete construction of 10 new athletic facilities within the next two years as it wraps up its transition to full-status NCAA Division I athletics. s new state-of-the-art baseball stadium, slated for completion in February 2018, will feature covered chairback seats wrapping around the infield and behind home plate as well as grass-berm seating down the first-base side. The first level of the stadium will feature bowl seating, an expansive press box with multiple broadcast booths, team store and concession space. There will be a team clubhouse, visiting locker room, umpire room as well as photo and video wells. The ballpark will feature a second level of seating to dramatically increase the capacity. The current capacity of 1,500 will more than double to 3,500 with the new facility. Attendance has continued to rise at home games with finishing second in the 10-team WAC in average attendance last year. The 2016 season saw six of the 10 largest crowds in GCU Baseball history, including a record 1,987 fans for the Lopes game Tennessee -- well past the current venue s official capacity of 1,500 fans. GCU Ballpark will also feature a new high-definition video display in right field. The current stadium s highly-regarded playing surface will remain untouched, but the stadium surrounding the surface will be demolished. The project will break ground following GCU s final home game on May 10 and is set to be completed for an opening-weekend home series next spring.
