SCOUTING UTEP UTEP makes the trip to Riverside still in search of its first win of the season, sitting at 0-9 after two weekends of competition. Junior second baseman Courtney Clayton is leading the Miners at the plate, batting.345 on the year with a team-high 10 hits. Junior utility player Taylor Sargent is tops defensively with 37 putouts. Five pitchers have seen time on the mound for UTEP, combining to post a 7.55 ERA while allowing 72 hits and 69 runs. Tobin Echo-Hawk is in her third season as the head coach of the UTEP program, where she has a record. This will be the third-ever meeting between Utah State and UTEP, but the first of three meetings set between the teams this month. USU won both previous meetings against the Miners, including a 6-1 win at last season s DeMarini Desert Classic. Utah State and UTEP were set to meet last week at the DeMarini Desert Classic, but the game was canceled due to weather. SCOUTING SIENA Siena is also seeking its first win of the year, as the Saints have gone 0-6 to start the season. Siena opened the year at the Madeira Beach Invitational, hosted by Eastern Michigan, followed by a single game at San Diego State. The Saints will play an out-of-tournament game against UC Riverside on Wednesday prior to the start of the Amy S. Harrison Classic. Sophomore infielder Jazmin Ortiz leads the Siena offense, hitting.385 on the year, with five hits and three runs socred. Sophomore first baseman Madysen Cossack is tops defensively with 22 putouts. The Saints have utilized four pitchers during the season, combining for a 6.12 ERA while allowing 39 hits and 39 runs. Bill Lajeunesse is in his seventh season as the head coach at Siena, where he has an overall record of Saturday will mark the first-ever meeting between Utah State and Siena. SCOUTING UC RIVERSIDE UC Riverside opens the Amy S. Harrison Classic with a 1-6 record. The Highlanders started the season the Kajikawa Classic, hosted by Arizona State, earning their sole win of the season in a 6-5 victory over UT Arlington. The Highlanders then played two games at the Campbell/Cartier Classic at San Diego State before rain canceled the remainder of the tournament. Senior outfielder Madeline Richard is leading the UC Riverside offense with a.385 batting average. Sophomore first baseman Brittney Garcia leads the defense with 49 putouts. Four Highlander pitchers have seen time in the circle, where junior Tayler Misfeldt has earned the team s only win. Together, the UC Riverside pitching staff has an 8.55 ERA, while allowing 68 hits and 49 runs on the year. Nikki Palmer, former head coach at Utah Valley, is in her first season at the helm of the Highlander program. All-time, Utah State is 9-13 against UC Riverside. The series dates back to 2002, when the two schools played in the Big West together. RETURNING TO RIVERSIDE This weekend marks the fourth-straight season that Utah State has played in a UC Riverside-hosted tournament during preseason play. In all, the Aggies have gone 2-10 in games played in the Amy S. Harrison and Highlander Classics. Last year, Utah State fell to UC Riverside in a single meeting, while splitting a pair of games against Santa Clara. The final game against the Highlanders was canceled due to rain. PITCH PERFECT The Utah State pitching staff had a strong start to the season. The group leads the Mountain West in several categories, while multiple pitchers are highly ranked in many individual categories. The Aggies pitchers have the lowest ERA (1.67) in the conference, while also holding the opponent to the lowest batting average (.226) of anyone in the league. Utah State has allowed a conference-low 38 hits, as well as the fewest number of runs with 24. Individually, Utah State has two pitchers in the top-five ERA ranking, as freshman Kellie White ranks second (1.47) and senior April Brown ranks fourth (1.64). Brown has the lowest opposing batting average of all pitchers in the league at.176, while allowing a conference-low five runs. CAUGHT AT THE PLATE Sophomore catcher Brina Buttacavoli continues to have a strong performance behind the plate this season. Highlighting her statistics, Buttacavoli has caught four runners stealing, which is all of the stolen base stops for the Aggies this season. Buttacavoli leads the Mountain West with her four putouts of that kind. SAVING THE DAY Utah State pitchers have earned two saves so far this season, already matching last season s total. Sophomore Katie Schroeder opened the season with a save in the team s 5-3 win against Pacific, as she pitched the seventh inning. Senior April Brown posted her first-ca- Utah State Softball Notes 2 Feb. 22, 2017

3 reer save as she pitched three full innings in USU s 9-5 win over Loyola Marymount. COUNT ON SARINA Batting in the fifth and sixth positions in the lineup, senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo is a dependable one at the plate. This season, Jaramillo is batting.600 (3-of-5) with runners in scoring position, bringing all three players in to score. Additionally, Jaramillo is 4-of-5 (.800) on the year when heading to bat with two outs on the board and has advanced runners eight times in her at-bats. RAIN, RAIN, GO AWAY Utah State s weekend in Las Vegas at the DeMarini Desert Classic was cut short last week, as rain and poor field conditions forced cancellations on two days of the tournament. The Aggies were slated to play a doubleheader against Weber State and UTEP, but additional games against both schools are already on the schedule. Utah State s final game of the tournament was scheduled against Texas State. No plans for a rescheduled meeting have been announced, but may be added later. Last season, Utah State had two games canceled due to weather, while the entire series against Colorado State had to be rescheduled. THE ART OF THE STEAL While the Aggies have caught four of nine runners on steal attempts defensively, the USU offense has successfully stolen base on 12 of 13 attempts this season. With the 12, Utah State is tied for first in the Mountain West along with UNLV and Boise State. Individually, three Aggies rank in the top 10, as freshman outfielder Mia Maher leads both the team and the league with six. Junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke and junior third baseman Amee Aarhus are tied for second with two steals apiece. CATCHING THE LEAD With the team s season-opening win over Pacific, Steve Johnson became the second-winningest coach in USU history. Currently in his fourth season at the helm of the Aggie roster, Johnson has compiled of record. Lloydene Searle is the winningest coach in program history, finishing her 17-year career with a record. EARLY EDITION Making her collegiate debut in the Easton Invitational, freshman pitcher Kellie White made a good first impression. She made two appearances on the weekend, pitching two complete games and earning two wins. White pitched an eight-inning 2-1 win over North Dakota State in her first game as an Aggie, following that with a 7-3 win over Cal State Fullerton. White is the first USU freshman pitcher to win her first collegiate game since Mandy Harmon did so in KNOCKING IT OUT OF THE PARK Senior 3B/2B Victoria Saucedo continues to climb the home run ranks of the Aggie record book. After matching the single-season home run record with 12 last season, Saucedo entered the 2017 season ranked third on the career record list. Saucedo hit the team s only home run of the first weekend of competition, the 24th of her career. With that hit, she is now tied for second-place on the career home run list. Kelley Kaneshiro holds the home run record, hitting 39 from A STRONG START Utah State opened the 2017 campaign with a 4-1 record. Playing at the Easton Invitational, the Aggies started the year with a 5-3 win over Pacific, the team s fist season-opening win since The success continued through the weekend, as USU started the year at 4-0 for the first time since PRESEASON PREDICTIONS Utah State softball has been picked to finish fourth in the Mountain West Preseason Poll, as voted on by the league s nine coaches. The fourth-place selection is the highest preseason ranking the Aggies have had in their years in the Mountain West, and the highest overall since the team s fourth-place ranking in the 1994 Big West preseason poll. Fresno State was picked to repeat as conference champions, followed by San Diego State and San José State in the top three. Nevada was picked to finish fifth, while Colorado State and Nevada tied for sixth place. New Mexico followed in eighth, while Boise State rounded out the poll. LAST TIME OUT Utah State softball posted a 1-1 record in a single day of competition at the weather-shortened UNLV-hosted DeMarini Desert Classic last weekend as it lost to Memphis, 8-0, in five innings, but defeated Southern Utah, 3-1. Freshman Kellie White and senior April Brown each made a start for the Aggies on the mound Friday, while sophomore Katie Schroeder also saw time. Together, the three allowed 10 hits on the day, while striking out three batters and walking five. At the plate, sophomore designated player Bailey Lewis was a perfect 2-for-2 in the game against SUU. Behind her, junior outfielder Jazmin Clarke and senior shortstop Sarina Jaramillo hit.400 (2-of-5) between the two games. Senior first baseman Paxton Provost was tops defensively, tallying a team-high 14 putouts. UP NEXT Utah State s tournament season continues next week as the Aggies make their first of back-to-back trips to Southern Utah. Utah State will play in the St. George Red Desert Classic, hosted by Southern Utah. There, the Aggies will take on Utah Valley, Omaha, Binghamton, Iowa State and Montana. 17 STEVE JOHNSON Head Coach Fourth Season Wartburg College 97 USU Record: (.405) Career Record: Same Steve Johnson is in his fourth season as the head coach of the Utah State softball team, after being named the ninth head coach of the Aggie program on June 26, Johnson led the 2016 team to the program s best record in 20 years. The Aggies finished the year with a record, the best team record since 1996, while going in Mountain West action. The Aggies 12 Mountain West wins are the most conference victories since the 1996 team posted a Big West record. Utah State finished tied for third in the conference, their highest finish since joining the Mountain West and the highest overall conference finish since This is also the first time since the 1996 campaign that Utah State finished with a record above.500. Over the course of the 2016 season, the Aggies set new program records in runs scored (281), doubles (86), home runs (50), total bases (701), RBIs (259), slugging percentage (.492) and on base percentage (.383). On an individual level, three players set or tied single-season records. Outfielder Sarah Chow hit a program-best eight triples on the year, while outfielder Jazmin Clarke shattered the stolen base record with 25 during the season. Third baseman Victoria Saucedo tied the home run record, hitting 12 during her junior season. Three Aggies earned all-mountain West honors in 2016, as Clarke, Saucedo and outfielder/pitcher Alleyah Armendariz were each named to the second team. Additionally, 12 members of the USU roster earned academic all-conference honors and five were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In 2015, Johnson coached the Aggies to a record, going in Mountain West action. The Aggies ended the season on a threegame winning streak in a sweep over Boise State. Overall, the Aggies hit.254 on the year, ending the season with 439 hits and 252 runs scored. The Aggies also saw an increase in doubles from 58 in 2014 to 81. As a team, Utah State set two then-records from the plate in 2015, with 229 RBIs and 40 home runs. Individually, outfielder Hailey Froton bested her own single-season RBI record (48), while claiming the career record (132), while Armendariz tied the single-season home run record, hitting 12. Four Utah State players earned all-mountain West honors following the 2015 campaign, as Froton and pitcher Noelle Johnson earned first-team honors and Armendariz and Chow were named to the second team. The four all-conference recognitions are the most for a Utah State team since 1993, when four players earned all-big West honors. Off the field, five student-athletes received academic all-mountain West honors, while three were named Mountain West Scholar-Athletes. In his first season at Utah State in 2014, Johnson led the team to an record. Included in that record was a 6-18 conference record in Utah State s first year in the Mountain West. Auburn also registered its first-ever series win over a top-five team, taking two-of-three games from No. 4 Georgia.
