8 Softball 2011 Preview COLONELS Injuries plagued the Colonels in Three starters were lost before the season reached its midway point. In addition, several others played through injuries and had to undergo surgery after the season ended. Seven position starters return from last season, plus the three Colonels that were starters before their seasons were cut short. The top two pitchers are back for 2011 as well. We expected to have a better year last year, but we couldn t overcome the injuries, head coach Jane Worthington said. A broken leg, two broken wrists and a broken thumb were things we just couldn t foresee. I ve never had that many injuries in 20 years of coaching. The one constant throughout the 18-year history of the EKU softball program has been Worthington. The only coach in program history is back for her 19th season at the helm. The Colonels will be looking to give their coach her 500th career victory in Worthington enters the season with a record. She led Eastern to Ohio Valley Conference championships and NCAA tournament appearances in 2002 and We have to get back to where we used to be, said Worthington. We haven t done as well as we would like the last few years. Our goal is to get back to where we were. INFIELD The infi eld will be anchored at third base by fi fth-year senior Shyenne Hussey. The three-time All-Ohio Valley Conference selection was one of the three players lost to injury a year ago. Hussey played fi ve games in In 2009, Hussey batted.349 and hit six home runs. She drove in more than 40 runs as a freshman and a sophomore. Raquel Howes started every game at shortstop in 2010 as a freshman. She hit.287, tied for the team lead with 22 RBIs and was second on the team with 23 runs scored. However, Howes will slide over to second in Freshman Christina Ciolek is expected step in at shortstop. Nikki Bruce took over at second base and started 28 times after Larkyn Wood suffered a season ending injury. Bruce hit two home runs and drove in 10 runs. Wood started the fi rst 19 games of the season. Bruce will split time between second and fi rst base this season. Wood will make a permanent move to fi rst base. Freshman Shannon McQueen will also battle for playing time at fi rst and can fi ll in for Hussey at third base when needed. OUTFIELD All three starters return in the outfi eld. In her fi rst two seasons Diane Gallagher Shyenne Hussey left fi elder Diane Gallagher has earned All-OVC honors twice. Last season she batted.325, scored a team-best 25 runs and led the conference with a school record 34 stolen bases. Senior Cassi Gibson returns in center fi eld for her fi nal season. In 2010 Gibson hit.264 with 13 RBIs and 14 runs scored. The job in right fi eld will be up for grabs. Melissa Costa started 32 times in right fi eld as a freshman last season but is still recovering from an injury. She fi nished third on the team with a.295 batting average. Juniors Christina Datko and Samm Daniels, along with freshmen Jessica Shartzer and Nicole Heitz will vie for playing time in right. CATCHERS Worthington has a big hole to fi ll behind the plate after the graduation of two-time All-OVC backstop Jena Handley. Handley led the team with a.333 batting average and tied for the team lead with 22 RBIs a year ago. Senior Ashley Dollins got off to a strong start in 2010 while splitting time with Handley behind the dish, but her season ended after 24 games due to an injury. Despite playing less than half the season, Dollins had a team-high three home runs to go along with a.279 batting average and 12 RBIs. Freshman Cheyanne Pounds saw action in 13 games last year but was limited at the end of the season due to an injury. PITCHERS In the circle, three of fi ve pitchers will be back in 2011, led by sophomore Kristin Perry. As a freshman Perry went 7-14 but she struck out 142 batters, in 124 and one-third innings, and had the lowest opponents batting average in the OVC (.193). She did however issue 118 walks. Perry had the fi fth most strikeouts and the 15th lowest ERA in the OVC last year. She ranked 58th in the nation with an average of eight strikeouts per seven innings and ranked 29th in the nation in hits allowed per seven innings (4.73). Perry pitched seven complete games, including three shutouts. She had seven or more strikeouts in a game 10 times. We have to avoid walks this season. One thing all our pitchers need to fi nd is consistency, said Worthington. We were up and down last year. If they can be consistent, then we ll be alright. Seniors Stacye Toups and Noelani Esperas also return. Toups has 20 career wins and led the team with a 2.82 ERA in Esperas tossed a fi ve-inning no-hitter in the fi nal game of the 2010 season. This past fall gave us a chance to see what we have and they did a good job, Worthington said. The bottom line is we have to get out there this spring and see how it is going to transfer. 5 EKUSports.com

9 eku Softball Head Coach EKUSports.com Head Coach 19th Washington, Utah Jane Worthington Utah State, ` & 2004 OVC Coach of the Year It was fi tting that long-time head softball coach Jane Worthington s 400th win at Eastern Kentucky came as the Colonels advanced to the title contest of the 2006 conference championship, a game that Worthington has grown accustomed to competing in during her 18 years at the helm of the program. Worthington has been committed to the success of Eastern Kentucky softball since she started in 1993, and as of late, the rewards have been coming fast and furious. The Washington, Utah native is entering her 19th year with the Colonels and has guided the squad to two OVC titles and two NCAA tournament appearances. The expectations remain high for the 2011 team as the squad looks to return to post-season play. Since taking over the helm of the Colonels program, Worthington has posted an impressive overall mark and an even more striking mark in Ohio Valley Conference play. She has led the Colonels to victory in nearly 60 percent of their conference games, and under Worthington s guidance, EKU has earned a spot in 15 of the 17 OVC tournaments since the event began in During the past nine seasons, Worthington s efforts in building the program were rewarded as the Colonels fi nished in the top three in the conference four times, won a pair of OVC championships and advanced to two NCAA tournaments. The 2004 season, Worthington s best yet, saw the team capture the OVC title and make its second NCAA tournament appearance in three years. Worthington also guided the Colonels to a 42-win season, the most victories in program history, before earning her second OVC Coach of the Year award. Two years prior, Eastern Kentucky earned the school s fi rst-ever conference championship and Worthington was selected as the league s coach of the year. Throughout her career, Worthington has produced several standout players as three Colonels have been named OVC Player of the Year and four players have earned Freshman of the Year recognition. Twenty-eight All-OVC fi rst team players have come through the program and 27 players have been named to the league s second team. Worthington has found success on the diamond with solid pitching and strong defense while testing her team early with a challenging non-conference schedule. Never one to shy away from tough competition, she regularly schedules games against nationally-ranked programs in order to prepare her squad for the demands of Ohio Valley Conference opponents. Worthington maintains that the only way to improve is to play the best possible teams in the country. Her Eastern Kentucky squads have faced numerous nationally-ranked opponents, defeating No. 7 South Carolina in 1995 and facing top-ranked UCLA in the 2002 NCAA Regional. More recently, the Colonels fell in close games to No. 22 Washington and No. 15 Hawai`i in 2008, and 18th ranked Louisville in In addition, Worthington has established a nation-wide recruiting base and continues to attract top players from the best high schools and junior college programs in the country. Worthington, the only coach in the program s 18-year history, has built the program from the ground up, starting in her fi rst year at EKU with the construction of Gertrude Hood Field. The Colonels fi rst season of competition, in the spring of 1993, Worthington led the team to an record and the following year, the Colonels posted a mark. In just its third year, the program posted its fi rst-ever winning season (31-29) and advanced to the fi nals of the conference tournament. Worthington led Eastern Kentucky to another winning season in 1998, ending with 38 wins, and reached a career milestone with her 200th victory in The Colonels competed in the national postseason, playing in both the 2002 and 2004 NCAA tournaments. Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Worthington spent two years as an assistant coach at Miami (Ohio) and one year as an assistant at Livingston University in Alabama. She earned a master s degree in sports studies from Miami (Ohio) in Before entering the collegiate coaching ranks, Worthington taught junior high school in Idaho. Worthington, a 1982 graduate of Utah State, helped the Aggies capture the national championship with a win over Cal-State Fullerton in the fi nals. Winning a championship as a player, Worthington knows what it takes to be a winner and has successfully instilled those beliefs in her players. As a result, a large number of her former players have followed her lead and entered the coaching profession. A strong supporter in the growth of fast-pitch softball in Kentucky, Worthington has provided numerous opportunities for individuals to enhance their softball skills at clinics and camps. On a yearly basis, she hosts player development clinics and camps to help fast-pitch softball develop throughout the state. Worthington believes in giving all players the chance to increase their skills and attempts to keep costs low so that everyone interested can attend. In addition, she believes in devoting personal attention to each participant and as a result, tries to keep the number of participants low by scheduling multiple events. Worthington has instructed over 3,000 players at the Eastern Kentucky camps and clinics throughout the years and has helped raise the level of play in Kentucky and surrounding states. In 1996, Worthington was given the state s Citizen for Sports Equity Outstanding College Coach Award. The Colonels coach also stresses the importance of academics and expects her players to also excel in the classroom. She feels that a balance can be achieved, and with good management skills, her student-athletes can succeed in the classroom and on the playing fi eld. Her close work with the Chad Bratzke Student-Athlete Academic Success Center has resulted in many past EKU softball players being recognized as Colonel Scholars. In 1999, Michelle Williams received the OVC Medal of Honor for the fourth time after graduating with a perfect 4.0 GPA. In 2002 Elise Burch became Eastern s fi rst softball Academic All-American. After graduation, Worthington s past players have entered the professional fi elds of law, criminal justice, education, business, aviation and coaching. 10 Softball Assistant Coach COLONELS Assistant Coach Megan Ink Eastern Kentucky University, `02 & `06 Ninth San Jose, Calif. Eastern Kentucky head softball coach Jane Worthington did not have to look very far to fi nd her assistant coach when she tabbed former Colonel catcher Megan Ink for the position eight years ago. Now set to begin her ninth year on the EKU coaching staff, Ink s responsibilities include arranging team travel, working with the pitchers and catchers and assisting Worthington in all aspects of coaching. She has been instrumental in maintaining the program s strong recruiting ties to the west coast. In eight seasons, Ink has helped the Colonels to four top-four fi nishes in the Ohio Valley Conference, including an OVC championship in After a stellar two-year career behind the plate, Ink s transition to the Eastern Kentucky coaching staff was an easy one. An outstanding player in her own right, Ink also has the distinction of being part of both Colonel NCAA tournament appearances. She competed in the tournament as a player in 2002 and returned as a member of the coaching staff in Megan has done a fantastic job since coming on board, especially in terms of improving our pitching, Worthington said. She knew my style of coaching as a player and has adapted very easily to coaching. Megan is a true asset to this program. The All-OVC second team honoree started 96 of 98 games behind the plate for the Colonels while making just three errors in her two-year career. She posted a career-high batting average of.246 and helped lead Eastern Kentucky to its fi rst-ever NCAA tournament in Prior to Eastern Kentucky, Ink spent her fi rst two collegiate seasons at San Jose City College. While at SJCC, Ink was named to the all-conference fi rst team and to the All-Northern California Team. In addition, she was named the team s MVP following her sophomore year. Ink has been heavily involved in conducting clinics and camps throughout the state of Kentucky. The San Jose, Calif., native earned her bachelor s degree in correctional and juvenile justice studies from Eastern Kentucky in She earned a master s degree in sports administration from Eastern Kentucky in December of In the summer of 2007, the former Megan Mills married Brian Ink. 7 EKUSports.com
