Counting this year, Virginia has competed in each of the last six NCAA tournaments and nine overall. UVa is all-time in the NCAA tournament. Under Brian O Connor (since 2004), UVa is in the NCAAs. O CONNOR RETURNS HOME Virginia head coach Brian O Connor is a native of Omaha and grew up in nearby Council Bluffs, Iowa. His parents, as well as his wife s parents, still live in the area. He played his college ball at Creighton and was part of the Bluejays 1991 CWS team. THIRD TIME TO CWS FOR O CONNOR Virginia head coach Brian O Connor is making his third appearance at the College World Series. He played in the CWS in 1991 as a pitcher with Creighton (2-2), was an assistant on Notre Dame s 2002 CWS team (1-2) and now is leading UVa as head coach. O Connor is the only one among the eight 2009 CWS coaches to have played, assisted and served as head coach on a CWS team. O Connor was the associate head coach for current LSU head coach Paul Maineri while the two were at Notre Dame. O CONNOR AND THE ROSENBLATT STATUE Brian O Connor also has connections to the famed statue which sits just outside Rosenblatt Stadium. The player on the far right was created in O Connor s likeness. John Lajba, an Omaha sculptor, created this statute. Lajba asked the O Connor family for a picture of Brian to use as one of his sculptures. Lajba said he wanted to include O Connor since he was a Creighton player and pitched in the CWS in UVA ONE OF 15 IN LAST SIX NCAA TOURNAMENTS Virginia is one of 15 Division I baseball programs to reach the NCAA tournament each of the last six seasons (including 09).
