1 edia Information Media Relations Department 198 Union Avenue Memphis, Tennessee Phone: Memphis Redbirds (26-15) vs. Fresno Grizzlies (16-25) Friday, May 19 9:05 p.m. (CT) Chukchansi Park (12,500) Fresno, California Game #42 Road Game #22 (14-7) RHP Luke Weaver (3-0, 0.41) vs. RHP Mike Hauschild (0-1, 11.70) THE GAME TODAY S GAME: The Memphis Redbirds open up an eightgame west coast swing with the first of four against the Fresno Grizzlies (Astros). Memphis is coming off a 5-3 homestand and a series split with Albuquerque while Fresno dropped three of four to Nashville. Today s game will be broadcast on Sports56 and 87.7 FM and internet webcast at MemphisRedbirds.com, with Steve Selby on the call. ON THE HILL: Luke Weaver gets the ball in the series opener tonight. The prospect righthander (#2 Cardinals) has been lights out so far this season, when healthy. In his last start, Weaver allowed his first run and walk of the year, but limited El Paso to six hits and struck out a season-best nine over seven innings. The righthander missed 22 games earlier this season with a back injury suffered on Opening Day, but has thrown three quality starts since returning. Fresno responds with righthander Mike Hauschild in the opener. In three starts with the Grizzlies, Hauschild has allowed 13 runs on 13 hits and nine walks in 10 innings thus far. He started the season by making the Opening Day roster with Texas after being selected in the Rule 5 Draft this past offseason. Hauschild then allowed 10 runs on 14 hits in eight innings and was designated for assignment and returned to Houston on April 22. SCHEDULE WITH FRESNO: The Redbirds and Grizzlies meet for their only series of the 2017 season. Last year, Memphis and Fresno split a four-game set at AutoZone Park. In fact, the two squads have split the last two season series. Going back further, Memphis is searching for its first season series triumph over an Astros affiliate since 2011 (11-5) when the team was in Oklahoma. Memphis has not won a series in Fresno since 2008 (3-1) THIS DATE IN REDBIRDS HISTORY (May 19, 2005): RHP Anthony Reyes threw a one-hit, complete game shutout and struck out six to lead the Redbirds to a 2-0 win at Portland. THE SEASON ABOUT THE LAST ONE: Memphis scored three runs in its first two at-bats and pounded out 14 hits (13 singles) in a 4-2 win to salvage a series split with Albuquerque. All eight Redbirds position players recorded a hit with Chad Huffman and Rangel Ravelo contributing three hits a piece. Mike Mayers turned in a quality start on the hill, taking a shutout into the eighth inning before giving up two runs in the frame. John Brebbia earned his third save in as many tries with two spotless innings of relief. MEMPHIS MASHERS MIA: The Redbirds have failed to homer in their last four games, marking the longest stretch without a dinger since a five-game drought from April Memphis entered the series vs Albuqueruque with a leagueleading 45 home runs, but have fallen behind Nashville (51) and Oklahoma City (46) in the circuit standings. Overall, the Redbirds have not homered in six of their last seven games. The Redbirds are still way ahead of their pace from a season ago when the squad did not hit its 45th homer until game 67, which came on June 19. THE FINE PRINT: - Memphis did not win its 26th game last season until June 12 when they improved to This is the first time the Redbirds have reached 26 wins while being over.500 since 2013 (26-21) - Since falling under.500 at on April 27, the Birds are 16-4 overall and in their last five series BIRD BITES BADER: 17 of his 35 hits have come when batting sixth (17-for-51,.333, 2 2B, 3 HR, 9 R, 5 RBI) CUNNINGHAM: Hitting.358 (24-for-67, 8 2B, 3 HR, 16 R, 14 RBI) in night games compared to.171 in day games DeJONG: Hitting.328 (21-for-64, 4 2B, 6 HR, 10 R, 15 RBI) in home games vs.271 on the road HUFFMAN: Hits in eight of his last 10 games (13-for-29,.449, 4 2B, 3 R, 5 RBI) KELLY: Hits in nine of his last 11 games (19-for-43,.442, 5 2B, HR, 9 R, 8 RBI); Seven multi-hit games in his last 11 MARTINI: 1-for-13 last series after picking up 13 hits in his first nine games with Memphis PERALTA: Continues MLB rehab after going on DL on April 20 with upper respiratory illness; 4-for-11 in first three games RAVELO: Hits in six straight games (9-for-20,.450, 2B, 5 R, 2 RBI) ROSARIO: Has accrued five RBI in his last two games after 0 in his first 11 appearances TOVAR: Five hits in his last four games after going 0-for-12 in prior four contests VALERA: Hit safely in 13 of his last 14 games (19-for-49,.388, 4 3B, 8 R, 2 RBI) VOIT: Hit safely in 12 of his last 14 games (21-for-57,.368, 5 2B, 3 HR, 8 R, 12 RBI) WISDOM: Hitting.343 (23-for-67, 8 2B, 3 HR, 10 R, 13 RBI) at home compared to.214 on the road UPCOMING GAMES AND PROBABLE PITCHERS DATE TIME (CT) OPPONENT REDBIRDS STARTER OPPONENT STARTER Sat. 2 REGRESSING TO THE MEAN: Memphis offense has struggled to produce, relatively, in the Albuquerque series, before posting 14 hits last night. In their last five series, the Redbirds offense reached new heights by pounding out 131 runs on 235 hits for a.318 team average in the 21 games (6.2 runs/11.2 hits per game). As would be expected, Memphis was a robust 16-5 during that run. The Redbirds have scored at least four runs in their last 12 victories and 16 of their last 21 games overall. Memphis is 18-1 when scoring at least five runs in a game this year. The Birds have at least six hits in 20 of their last 21 (1 hit in rain-shortened 5-inning win on 4/29), and double-digit hits in 15 of the 21 contests. STARTING OUT QUICK: The Redbirds have scored 27 runs in the first inning and 26 runs in the second inning of games, which are their two most fruitful frames of the season. Additionally, the pitching staff has allowed just 22 runs in the game s first two innings including a minute 5 runs in the second inning alone. Memphis has scored first in 25 of its initial 41 games this season, which is second in the PCL (Iowa, 26). The Redbirds have struck first in 11 of their last 17 games and are now only 16-9 overall in those contests, which is sixth-worst in the league. Fresno is just 13-9 when jumping out on top first, the thirdworst mark in the league The Redbirds have scored the game s final run 21 times and are 17-4 (3rd PCL) in such games. HOME COOKING: Memphis has played only 20 contests at AutoZone Park so far this year, among the fewest in the league. After this eight-game road trip, the Redbirds will play 15 of the next 19 in the Bluff City. The Redbirds have made the most of their brief time at home, posting 68 extra-base hits, including 24 home runs. The Redbirds hit 49 homers all of last season at home. EXTRA, EXTRA: The Redbirds have recorded 143 extra-base hits this season (88 doubles, 10 triples, 45 home runs), which is second in the PCL (Reno, 157). The Birds have vaulted to a fifth in the league in hitting (.280), and rank second in total bases (634) and third in slugging percentage (.454). COMFORTABLE WHEN CLOSE: Wednesday s rare one-run setback dropped Memphis to 7-2 in games decided by the slimmest of margins, still the best mark in the PCL. The Birds have now played five straight games that have been decided by three runs or fewer. RUN, RUN, RUNAWAY: The Redbirds are 16-for-39 in steal attempts and have been picked off 12 times. The 23 caught stealings are tied for the most in the PCL with Salt Lake (56-for-79). Additionally, the Redbirds are the only PCL team to have a success rate less than 50%. Memphis has not stolen a base since Saturday, May 6 at Iowa. TURNED UP TO ELEVEN: Memphis posted a franchise-record 11-game winning streak from April 28 - May 8. The Redbirds outscored opponents during the run, scoring at least four runs nine times and limiting the opponent to two runs or fewer on seven occasions. Memphis dominated on both sides of the diamond, hitting.330 with 19 homers over the stretch while averaging 7.4 runs per game. On the mound, Redbird pitchers posted a 3.43 ERA. The wins came in a variety of ways for Memphis, with seven of the 11 decided by three runs or fewer, five victories coming from behind, three last at-bat triumphs, and two wins in extra innings. MEMPHIS PLAYERS AND COACHES HE IS ONE WITH THE FORCE: Opening Day starter Luke Weaver missed 22 games with a back injury, but it has not slowed him down at all. In four starts this season, Weaver has allowed one run and walked one batter in 22 innings of work. His season-opening scoreless streak was snapped at 19.2 innings with a solo homer in the fifth inning on Saturday. Weaver was named the PCL Pitcher of the Week last week after combining to throw 13 scoreless frames against Omaha and Iowa. He has authored three straight quality starts since coming off the DL. ROTATING ROTATION: On Wednesday, John Gant became the 10th different pitcher to start a game for Memphis already this season, doing so in his season debut. A year ago, the Redbirds employed only 14 different starting pitchers all season. From the original Opening Day rotation, only last night s starter, Mike Mayers, has made every start in turn. Luke Weaver missed 22 games with a back injury, Arturo Reyes made three relief appearances piggybacking Tyler Lyons, and both Chris Ellis and Josh Zeid have been moved to relief roles. THE JITTERBUG: John Brebbia has turned himself into one of, if not the, most reliable performers in the Redbird bullpen. Brebbia has picked up saves in his last three appearances, recording two perfect innings yesterday. Brebbia has not allowed a run in his last seven outings, covering 12 innings. During that time, he has yielded only two hits, struck out 15, and walked three. The righthander has a 1.31 ERA in 12 relief appearances this year and ranks among PCL relievers in opponents average (.130, t-1) and fewest baserunners/9 (6.10, 2nd). REHABBING: Jhonny Peralta joined the Redbirds Sunday, continuing his Major League rehab for an upper respiratory illness. He has been on the Disabled List since April 20 with the ailment and played the first part of his MLB rehab with Advanced-A Palm Beach last weekend from May 5-7, going 2-for-8 with four strikeouts. Tyler Lyons started Monday in his second rehab stint with Memphis this season. He has been on the DL since May 2 with a right intercostal strain. VOIT OF CONFIDENCE: The St. Louis Cardinals tabbed Luke Voit as the organization s Minor League Player of the Month for April, his second straight month winning the award (August 16 with Springfield). Voit hit.360 with five homers and 16 RBI in 23 April games. But a change in the calendar has not slowed him down. Voit is hitting.344 in May with three homers and 11 RBI in 15 games. He currently ranks among league leaders in extra-base hits (21, t-3), SLG (.632, 3rd), OBP (.436, 4th), and average (.353, 8th). THE KELLY FILE: Carson Kelly has caught 16 of the last 21 games for Memphis and the steady playing time has brought out the best in his offensive ability. In his last 10 games, he has recorded seven multi-hit contests and increased his average 93 points to.317 (19-for-44,.432, 5 2B, HR, 9 R, 9 RBI). Defensively, Kelly has thrown out seven of 19 wouldbe base stealers, the fourth-best mark in the league. EN FUEGO: Breyvic Valera was a revelation for Memphis a year ago, hitting.341 in 73 games. After a slow start to this year (.193 through 15 games), Valera has found his stroke in his last 16 outings, going 23-for-58 (.397, 2 2B, 5 3B, 10 R, 3 RBI). Valera has seven multi-hit games in his last 17 contests after doing so just once in his first 15 games. Last year, he tied for second on the team with 20 multi-hit games. Valera saw his season-long 11- game hitting streak come to an end on Sunday (17- for-40,.425, 5 3B, 7 R, 2 RBI). CLEAR THE DE-CK: Paul DeJong ranked second in the Cardinals system last year with 22 homers and has brought his power to Triple-A this year. The infielder is tied for the team lead with eight homers, seven of which have come in his last 18 games. During that time, DeJong has collected 19 RBI, highlighted by four multi-rbi games. He had just one homer and six RBI in his first 19 games of the year before finding his recent success. PROSPECTING: The Cardinals organization has seen a steady growth in its prospect ranking the last three years, elevating from 15th to 14th to 12th this season, according to Baseball America. While top prospect Alex Reyes is sidelined for the season, seven of the top 30 prospects tabbed by the publication are currently on the Redbirds roster. That includes Luke Weaver (#2), Carson Kelly (#4), Harrison Bader (#7), Marco Gonzales (#13), Paul DeJong (#14), John Gant (#27), and Breyvic Valera (#29). THE ROSTER: Of the 25 players who comprise Memphis active roster (not counting MLB rehabs), 21 appeared at Triple-A last season, be it with Memphis or another organization. Of those who played at Triple-A, 13 donned a Redbirds uniform. Additionally, the roster is full of MLB experience with 10 players combining for 233 games played.
