2 WOMEN S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES NOTES CAL REACHES WOMEN S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES FOR SEVENTH STRAIGHT YEAR The second-seeded Golden Bears qualified for their seventh consecutive trip to the WCWS by virtue of defeating Baylor in the Waco Super Regional and going 4-1 at the Fresno State Sub-Regional. This year s appearance marks the Bears 10th program trip to the WCWS. Cal (52-13) opens WCWS play on Thursday against a familiar opponent seventh-seeded UCLA (36-18). The Bruins have defeated the Bears in each of the last two WCWS title games and the two schools faced off in their 2003 WCWS opener, a game Cal won, 7-3, in 10 innings. First pitch at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium is scheduled for 2 p.m. CST and the game can be seen live on ESPN2. The Bears have faced five teams that reached Oklahoma City this season and have posted a combined 7-3 record against the field in BEARS LOOK FOR RETURN TO TITLE GAME Having played in the national championship game each of the past three seasons, there s no doubt that California has been a dominant force at the WCWS in recent years. In 2002, the Bears won the first NCAA title by a women s team in school history when they defeated Arizona, 6-0, in the championship game. Cal returned to the final game a year later, but fell to UCLA, 1-0, in nine innings. Last year, the Bruins again trumped the Bears for the crown, 3-1. In the last three years, Cal has posted an 11-4 record at the WCWS WORLD SERIES IN REVIEW Cal opened last year s WCWS with a 4-2 victory against Florida State, highlighted by second baseman Jessica Pamanian s two-run triple in the third inning that plated center fielder Kaleo Eldredge and catcher Haley Woods for a 3-2 lead. The Bears then defeated Oklahoma, 2-1, to advance to the semifinals, where LSU handed Cal a 4-1 loss. The Bears rebounded to defeat the Tigers by the same score later in the day, with right fielder Alex Sutton going 3-for-4 with two RBI, and advanced to the championship game. In the final against UCLA, Cal took a 1-0 first-inning lead on a Pamanian single that scored left fielder Lindsay James. Starter Kelly Anderson was perfect through four innings before allowing a game-tying homer to the Bruins Claire Sua in the fifth. UCLA tacked on two more runs in the inning en route to the national title. Anderson, Pamanian and third baseman Vicky Galindo were named to the all-tournament team. Anderson went 2-1, struck out 14 and posted a 1.47 ERA. Galindo hit.412 and scored twice, while Pamanian batted.400 with four RBI. CAL HISTORICALLY AT THE WCWS Although it hasn t been until recently that the Bears have made their mark at the WCWS, Cal has been a player in the sport s most important competition for two-and-ahalf decades. Cal first qualified for the AIAW World Series from , putting together a trio of fifthplace finishes. The Bears returned to the NCAA s version of the WCWS in 1986, taking third. Current head coach Diane Ninemire first directed the Bears to a WCWS in 1992 when Cal placed fifth. Cal s only other appearance at the WCWS prior to their current seven-year run was a fifth-place showing in The Bears are all-time at the WCWS, under Ninemire. In Cal s nine previous trips to the NCAA WCWS, the Bears have won the opening game six times. CAL IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Bears are making their 21st appearance in the NCAA Tournament and have advanced to the postseason for 20 consecutive years, the longest active streak of any school in the Pac-10 Conference. The Bears are all-time in the NCAA competition. BEARS SURVIVE MARATHON SESSION TO WIN WACO SUPER REGIONALS Senior Kelly Anderson threw a three-hitter and Cal took game No. 1 of the Super Regional from Baylor, 8-0, in six innings May 27. But winning the series from the host school proved to be far less easy the following day. The Bears had to overcome two rain delays and a six-and-a-half hour postponement just too begin the second game, a contest Baylor won, 4-1, to force a third and decisive game. The Cal bats came around in the nightcap, as the Bears scored all their runs in the first two innings, and junior Kristina Thorson pitched a one-hitter en route to a 7-1 victory. The series wrapped up near midnight on May 28, almost 13 hours after Cal had originally arrived at the park. RESILIENT BEARS MASTER FRESNO STATE REGIONAL Cal s march to the Super Regional round was marked with late-inning heroics and clutch hitting and pitching performances. After losing their NCAA Tournament opener, the top-seeded Bears had to win four games in two days to advance out of Fresno. Cal opened the tournament May 19 with a 3-1 loss to BYU, a defeat which snapped Cal s 13-game regional winning streak and a seven-year opening-game regional winning streak. The Bears rebounded the next day against Long Beach State, although it took a two-strike, two-out, two-run double from catcher Haley Woods in the top of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 victory against the 49ers. In the loser s bracket final later that night, senior Kelly Anderson no-hit BYU just the second Cal no-hitter in postseason history as Cal pounded the Cougars, 9-0, in five innings. In the first game of the regional championship May 21, Fresno State leapt out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning before a run by senior second baseman Jessica Pamanian in the fourth and scores by senior third baseman Vicky Galindo and junior left fielder Lindsay James in the fifth gave Cal the win. Anderson scattered two hits in six innings of relief to earn her second victory of the tournament. Anderson upped her own ante in the regional clincher, tossing her second no-hitter of the tournament as Cal advanced to the Super Regionals with a 1-0 win. In perhaps her finest pitching performance of the year, Anderson faced just two batters over the minimum and didn t allow a runner past first base. A first-inning leadoff home run by Galindo held Senior Kelly Anderson 2 GOLDEN BEARS POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE

In capturing the regional and eliminating all three teams, the Bears won four straight games after losing the first of a regional for the first time in program history. Cal s comeback also marked the first time the Bears had won four consecutive games when facing elimination. CAL HELD IN HIGH REGARD IN 2005 The Bears entered this season as the preseason No. 1 in the NFCA/USA Today, USA Softball/ESPN.com and Pac-10 coaches poll all firsts in program history. Over the course of the year, Cal didn t disappoint the voters. The Bears enter the WCWS ranked No. 2 in the nation in both polls behind top-ranked Michigan. BEARS EARN FIRST PAC-10 CHAMPIONSHIP IN 18 YEARS Cal won four of its final five games over the last two weekends of league play and had a chance to win the Pac-10 Conference crown outright, but after a 2-1 loss to Arizona State on the final day of the regular season, the Bears had to settle for a four-way split of the title. Cal, Stanford, Arizona and Oregon State all finished the Pac-10 season at 13-8, though OSU received the conference s automatic NCAA Tournament bid by league tiebreaker rules. The split is Cal s best finish since taking the inaugural Pac- 10 banner in 1987 and the best mark for a Diane Ninemire-coached team. Coupled with a second-place showing last year, the 2005 co-championship gave Cal its best back-to-back conference showing. The 13-8 Pac-10 mark is also Cal s best conference record since going 20-8 in CAL KEEPS LOSSES AT A MINIMUM The Bears opened the 2005 season with nine consecutive wins, posted a season-high 12-game winning streak early in the campaign, and enter the WCWS having won 10 of 13 games against some of the nation s top teams. In between all the success, the Bears have suffered just 13 losses, tying with last year s Cal squad for least under head coach Diane Ninemire. Additionally, Cal s eight Pac-10 losses in 2005 were the fewest since 1991 (6). The 2005 Bears also have an excellent shot to set a new mark for victories in a season. The 2002 WCWStitle squad holds that record with 56. Junior Kristina Thorson 2005 WOMEN S SOFTBALL COLLEGE WORLD SERIES 3

4 WOMEN S COLLEGE WORLD SERIES NOTES ANDERSON SEIZES THE MOMENT Senior pitcher Kelly Anderson s postseason prowess has been a huge reason why the Bears qualified for the 2005 WCWS. At the Fresno State Regional, Anderson enjoyed the top week of her season and, perhaps, the best stretch of her four-year career. The senior went 3-0 and tossed nohitters in the loser s bracket final against BYU and championship game against Fresno State. She finished the tournament with a 0.00 ERA (allowing one unearned run) and gave up just five hits in 20.1 innings. Anderson s mastery continued into the Super Regionals, where she three-hit Baylor in game No. 1. In the second game, she scattered two hits over five innings before allowing four runs the first earned runs Anderson had given up in 31.2 postseason innings. She enters the WCWS with a 4-1 record and 0.87 ERA in 32.1 innings, and has allowed 14 hits, five runs (four earned) and a.133 opposing average. On the year, Anderson is 28-8 with a 1.20 ERA and leads Cal with 13 shutouts and a.146 opposing batting average. THORSON COMES THROUGH It took Cal s most important contest of 2005 to produce one of the Bears top pitching performances of the year, but junior Kristina Thorson was game for the occasion. In the Super Regional final against Baylor, Thorson tossed a one-hitter, struck out 12 and faced one batter over the minimum. Down the Pac-10 stretch, Thorson was nearly flawless. She didn t suffer a loss in her last 11 appearances of the regular season (4/10-5/13) and entered the postseason having allowed just one earned run in her last 31.1 innings pitched. On the season, Thorson (23-5) leads the Bears with a 1.15 ERA, 220 strikeouts and has walked just 29 hitters. She combines with Anderson to form one of the top pitching staffs in the nation, if not the country s best 1-2 punch. ELDERS DIRECT BEARS The 2005 Cal lineup is loaded with seniors, six of whom were on the roster when the Bears won the 2002 WCWS. Picher Kelly Anderson is fifth in Cal program history in victories (83), Senior Vicki Galindo has a career 1.26 ERA and has won 20-plus games for three consecutive seasons. Centerfielder Kaleo Eldredge has been one of Cal s most consistent hitters, batting nearly.300 each year with at least 50 hits. She is also first all-time in runs scored in the school record book. Entering the WCWS, Chelsea Spencer has started an astounding 275 consecutive games at shortstop. She has teamed with second baseman Jessica Pamanian who s also had at least 50 hits every year to form the core of Cal s infield. Utility players Kristen Bayless and Jessica Vernaglia have been invaluable to Cal off the bench as position players, pinch hitters and pinch runners. Bayless had committed just one error in the past three seasons. NEWCOMERS MAKE AN IMPACT FOR CAL Four of the five first-year Bears have been regular contributors to Cal s success in Freshman first baseman Julie Meyer has started all 65 games for Cal with a.992 fielding percentage. Designated player Emily Friedman, a transfer from Wisconsin, enters the WCWS batting.293 on the season, but is hitting.364 in eight postseason games. Sophomore Jeana Gevas, a transfer from Cal Poly, has seen the majority of her time in the designated player role. Freshman Erika Racklin leads the Bears in substitute appearances (42) and has 15 steals. Freshman Katelyn Valenzuela has provided late-inning relief at second base and shortstop and as a pinch runner. GALINDO HOLDS DOWN THE TOP OF THE LINEUP A first team All-American, All-Pacific Region and All-Pac-10 selection last year, senior third baseman Vicky Galindo is having another superb season in the leadoff role for Cal in Already a first team All-Pac-10 and All-Region choice again this spring, Galindo paces the Bears in runs (48), doubles (11), triples (3), steals (18) and is batting.333. Her solo home run in the regional championship game provided the only run Cal would need against Fresno State in the 1-0 clinching victory Junior Haley Woods 4 GOLDEN BEARS POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE

CAL TAKES HOME THE ACCOLADES Even before this season s All-America team has been announced, the 2005 Bears have become one of the most decorated units in program history. No less than eight Cal players the most of any school in the conference were named to the All-Pac-10 team. Third baseman Vicky Galindo, pitcher Kelly Anderson and pitcher Kristina Thorson garnered first team honors, while center fielder Kaleo Eldredge, left fielder Lindsay James and catcher Haley Woods took home second team awards. Second baseman Jessica Pamanian and shortstop Chelsea Spencer were tabbed honorable mention. The Bears also placed five players on the NFCA All-Pacific Region team again, the most of any region institution and highest total since six Cal competitors made the 1993 team. Galindo and Eldredge were Cal s first team honorees, while Thorson, James and Woods were named to the second team. Additionally, Anderson and Pamanian were named to the CoSIDA District VIII Academic All-District first team. ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SEASON FOR NINEMIRE Diane Ninemire, already the winningest coach in California athletics history, earned her 800th career win in the Bears 1-0 victory against No. 3 Arizona May 12. Ninemire ( ) is just the 20th Division I head coach to reach the plateau. She led the Golden Bears to the 2002 WCWS title the first NCAA championship by any Cal women s team. In 18 seasons, she has directed Cal to 10 WCWS appearances, as well as reached the postseason and won at least 35 games each year. FIELD GEMS Entering the WCWS, Cal s.978 team fielding percentage in 2005 ranks first all-time in program history. While center fielder Kaleo Eldredge leads the way with a fielding mark, two other Cal starters catcher Haley Woods (.994) and first baseman Julie Meyer (.992) have posted impressive clips at high-activity positions. Cal s.978 fielding percentage tied for first in the Pac-10 this year. The Bears have committed just 41 errors all year (65 games), which has led to only 16 unearned runs. GOLDEN BEAR NOTES The Bears, who average 4.8 runs per contest, have been shutout just three times in 2005 Cal has lost just three non-conference games, tying last year s squad for fewest in Diane Ninemire s tenure as head coach... the Bears are 44-4 when leading after five innings and their only two losses when leading after six have come on walk-off homers (3/18 vs. Northwestern; 4/2 at Arizona) Cal is 44-6 when scoring first the Bears are 39-5 against non-conference teams and 34-0 when the opponent makes two-plus errors Cal lost 11 games this year due to rain... the Bears are 40-2 when scoring at least three runs WOMEN S SOFTBALL COLLEGE WORLD SERIES 5
