3 Welcome to the Iowa Bicycle Summit Hello and welcome to the Iowa Bicycle Summit. This event is in its 9th year and we are especially proud of this year s conference. If you are a trail builder in a smaller rural community or an engineer in one of largest communities, you will learn a lot in these sessions. Thank you to Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) for sponsorship of the Iowa Bicycle Summit. They have been a partner since the beginning and we are excited to have their support. As the Iowa DOT continues to develop the new Iowa Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan, this conference becomes an important source of information. A big thank you to some of the people that makes this conference happen. Thanks to Milly Ortiz, Craig Markley, and the entire staff at Iowa DOT Systems Planning. Andrea Chase and Lisa Hein from the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation provide great advice each and every year. Emily Swihart from Trees Forever has provided immense assistance. Cory Scott of the Iowa APA Chapter has worked to promote this conference to APA members. Like any bicycle project, it always takes a team of dedicated professionals to make it happen. I would also like to thank you, the Iowa Bicycle Summit attendee. The objective of this conference is to build more, top-quality bicycle facilities across Iowa. It has been exciting over the past nine years to see concepts that we discussed at our conference make it into the built environment. While you are here, soak up all the knowledge possible, share ideas with others, make new friends, and use it all to make Iowa bicycling better.

5 Bicycle Facility Design Mike Lydon, Streets Plan Collaborative This year the Iowa Bicycle Summit will focus on bicycle facility designs on a small scale that can inspire large scale changes. Training will be provided by Mike Lydon from The Street Plans Collaborative in New York City. Mike collaborated with Andres Duany and Jeff Speck in writing The Smart Growth Manual, published by McGraw-Hill in 2009 and honored by Planetizen as one of the top ten planning books of Mike is also the creator and primary author of the The Open Streets Project and Tactical Urbanism: Short-Term Action, Long-Term Change Vol.1 and Vol.2. Community Visioning Emily Swihart & Brad Riphagen, Trees Forever Iowa's Living Roadway's Community Visioning TM is a program that helps Iowa s small communities access professional planning services and allows them to compete for project funding, which they would not be able to otherwise do since they can not afford to have full time staff for such purposes as larger communities often do. For towns 10,000 and under, Iowa s Living Roadways Community Visioning helps residents look at the community s transportation system holistically from bike trails to problem intersections to ways to make the community easier for people to navigate. Volunteers and community leaders take part in a series of meetings, which lead to a conceptual plan for landscaping along roadsides, entranceways, and trails. Teams of professional landscape architects and student interns create digital images and other visual representations that capture the community s unique attributes and vision. Once the planning process is completed, Trees Forever assists communities with carrying out their projects. Trails Visioning Emily Swihart & Brad Riphagen, Trees Forever Trails Visioning is a program that provides an opportunity for Iowa communities and trail groups to access professional landscape planning and design assistance. Through a series of planning meetings, a local volunteer committee works with a Trees Forever facilitator and a professional landscape designer to identify potential landscaping projects and to create images of what finished projects for their trail might look like. Similar volunteer Visioning committees across the state have been successful in completing community projects from this conceptual stage into fully implemented landscape plantings. Trees Forever Programs Emily Swihart & Brad Riphagen, Trees Forever Trees Forever offers several programs for on-the-ground tree planting and care projects that get people moving and create a greener

6 area for people to recreate. The ultimate benefit to the community will be increased community health through a focused effort on trees and green space that encourages people to get outside to exercise and mentally recharge. Safe Routes to School Ashley Christiansen & Alana Croco, Iowa Safe Routes to School Ashley Christensen, North East Iowa SRTS Liaison will briefly discuss her NE region in Iowa and what changes she s made in that area. She will also discuss upcoming events and projects in her area. Brain Injury Association of Iowa Robert Harding, Brain Injury Association of Iowa Robert Harding (brain injury survivor) will briefly discuss his head injury and how a helmet saved his life. Brandi Jensen ( Brain Injury Alliance) will delve into facts and figures on bicycle helmets and the importance of teaching our great state of Iowa about not only wearing helmets, but wearing them properly. TEAP Projects and Resources Jim Berger, Transportation Engineering Assistance Program Jim Berger, Iowa DOT's Office of Traffic and Safety, will discuss Safe Routes to School TEAP funding or Traffic Engineering Assistance Program. TEAP is available to communities needing assistance with traffic issues who also lack traffic engineers. Jim will discuss how these funds can be utilized to improve traffic issues (infrastructure) related to schools, making kids trips to school safer. Saris HUB System for Schools Jonathan Tupper, Saris Jonathan Tupper from Saris, a Wisconsin based company, will go into great detail about the Hub and the effectiveness of encouraging children to get to school via walking or biking. The Hub is a hardware/ software package implemented into schools to provide an educational walking and biking program. The Hub allows schools to build their own incentive program to motivate children to walk and bike to school. Lunch: Whiterock Conservancy Presentation on Trails Conrad Kramer, Whiterock Marketing Bicycling to Women Carolyn Szczepanski, League of AmericanBicyclists Whether avid, longtime cyclists or simply curious about the benefits of using a bicycle for transportation, more and more women are getting on bikes. The League s Women Bike program aims to change the face of bicycling by getting more women on bikes and participating as riders, advocates and leaders. Our goal is to unite efforts nationwide and act as a hub of best practices and information on women s bicycling.

7 Iowa By Trail App Andrea Chase, Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation After 30 years of helping to establish Iowa as the World Capital of Trails, the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation is pleased to announce Iowa by Trail, the all-iowa multiuse trail app and website. INHF partnered with Shift Interactive, an Iowa-based company to create the app and website. Iowa by Trail provides an interactive map that allows users to: Geo locate their position and find the closest trail; Find points of interest along the way, like local restaurants, museums and natural resource information; Communicate with friends and followers about what they did along the trail; Keep track of distance, weather, news and events. ISU Bike Share Mark Kargol Iowa State University has launched an ambitious project to design a bike share program with specific application to college campus. This project is a multi-semester program with the Department of Industrial Design and the Government of the Student Body. Logistics, design, operations, and sourcing are all on the table as the program will be built by the student who will ultimately use the program. Funding Sessions This unique session helps bicycle facility builders make connections with funding program managers. Each program manager is seated at a different table in Room Participants choose a table with approximately 10 other participants. Over 10 minutes, the program managers will explain their program s funding objectives and requirements. Over 10 minutes, participants will rotate to a new table and begin the process with another funding program manager. 8 Iowa Bike Expo Seminars and Meetups Saturday, January 25, 2014 Instead of a formal lecture sessions, the Iowa Bicycle Coalition has focused on a set of meetups and seminars during the Iowa Bike Expo on January 25th. These sessions are free and open to the public. You can RSVP for these events at Please invite your friends. Safe Routes to School Meeting 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM This meeting will discuss SRTS across the state, the importance of helmets as discussed by special guest Robert Harding of the Brain Injury Alliance, and a special Safe Routes to School Training. Bike Advocates Meetup 11 AM to 12 PM Are you working on advocacy issues at the local level? This is an opportunity to share what is going right in your community with other advocates Indoor Bicycle Rodeo 1 PM to 3 PM Bicycles and helmets will be provided as children travel through stations on safety and handling Community Bike Programs 1 PM to 2 PM Join staff and volunteers from community bike programs over Iowa and learn about best practices. Iowa Bike Racing Forum & IBRA Meeting Learn more about racing and changes for the upcoming year. In addition, leaders from Iowa's mountain biking leagues will be hosting meetup. Iowa Women Bicycling 1 PM to 2:30 PM More women are bicycling. How do we expand the women's bicycling movement. RIDE RIGHT 3 PM to 5 PM, Room The annual RIDE RIGHT safety meeting.
