1 Safety Notes August 2015 MEMBERSHIP MINUTE by Sadee Pistoia Membership Manager In the last month I have had the opportunity to attend several conferences along with visit a few of our member companies! This is such a fun way to celebrate the importance of safety. The awards that will be given out that day are: Individual Achievement in Safety Award (Robert F. Parenti Award) Award of Merit and the Award of Honor Achievement in Safety by an Organization Perfect Record Award Million Hours Award Professional Driver of the Year Award Occupational Seat Belt Award Life Saver Award (Harold Everitt Award, New this Year) About Our Staff Sadee Pistoia has been the Membership Manager since June Since joining our team, Sadee has brought so much enthusiasm and a new perspective to our membership program. Sadee is always willing to help and would love to hear from you, so feel free to reach her at SAFE (7233) EXT. 302 or by at spistoia@utahsafetycouncil.org.
2 Walking to School Safely The weather is nice, and school is starting up again soon. Walking to school is fun and can be a great way for you and your children to get some exercise. For those times where accompanying your child is not an option, here are some safety tips from saferoutesinfo.org to teach your children to stay safe on their walk to school: Walk in groups. Children should be accompanied by an adult whenever possible. If that is not possible, coordinate a group of students. Teach children to never get into vehicles with strangers. Remind your children to stay on the route you have designated, and to avoid taking shortcuts. Teach your children to report any bullying that may occur while walking to and from school. Be seen. Have your children wear bright clothing. If it is dark, wear reflective gear or carry a flashlight. Look for traffic. Look for moving vehicles in driveways and at every intersection. Cross the street safely. Stop at the curb or edge of the street. Look left, right, left and behind and in front for traffic. Wait until no traffic is coming and begin crossing. Keep looking for traffic until you have finished crossing. Remember to walk, don t run across the street. Obey traffic signs, signals and adult school crossing guards. Teach your children about each traffic sign and signal and why it is important to obey each one.
