2 + What to Bring Know your location ( Watch, timer, or phone so you can record 15-minute intervals Count forms (cover page + 8 count pages) Clipboard Pen or pencil and spares Hat, sunscreen, folding chair, snacks, water Contact number for questions:

3 + At the Location It is best to arrive at the location 15 minutes before the count period so you can lock your bike, get situated, fill out the rest of the forms, etc. Once you ve arrived: Find a safe location to conduct the count. Place yourself on one side of the street or the other at your screenline. Use safety as your primary guide. Consider the location that provides you with the best view of pedestrians and bicyclists traveling in both directions.

20 7 th St 8 th St + Conducting the Count How to Count It is best to arrive at the site 15 minutes before the count period so you can park, lock your bike, get situated, etc.. Once you ve arrived: Fill out the Cover Sheet showing exactly where you are counting. Circle the direction that people are travelling (north-south-eastwest). Make a note if you are counting on only one side of the street (because you have a partner counting the other direction) Figueroa St

21 + Conducting the Count How to Count No Helmet Be sure to count in 15-minute intervals. Use one count sheet page for each 15- minute interval You will have completed 8 pages at the end of your 2-hour shift. Please start your count and end your count promptly at the top of the hour. Child

22 + Conducting the Count How to Count Bicyclists No Helmet Child Count bicyclists as they cross the screenline. Use simple tally marks in groups of five. Count the bicyclists in the box that corresponds to the direction they are traveling when they cross the screenline. If you are only counting on one side of the street because you have a partner, you will only count riders in the other direction if they are riding the wrong way on your side of the street. At the end of each 15-minute period, total your tally marks in the space provided. 12

23 + Conducting the Count How to Count Bicyclists For bicyclists, please also notate if: They are riding the wrong way on the street They are riding on the sidewalk They are riding without a helmet They are a female cyclist They are a child No Helmet Child No Helmet Child

24 + Conducting the Count How to Count Bicyclists No Helmet Child For bicyclists, please also notate if: They are riding the wrong way on the street They are riding on the sidewalk They are riding without a helmet They are a female cyclist Example: A female bicyclist is riding the wrong way and has no helmet. You would put a mark in Female, Wrong Way Riding, AND No Helmet. Note: There is no wrong direction on the sidewalk. Only mark Sidewalk Riding OR Wrong Way Riding for any one bicyclist. Note: Mark Wrong Way Riders in the direction they are traveling, not the side of the street they are riding on.

25 + Conducting the Count How to Count Pedestrians No Helmet Child Count pedestrians as they cross the screenline. Use simple tally marks in groups of five. Count the pedestrians in the box that corresponds to the direction they are traveling when they cross the screenline. If you are only counting on one side of the street because you have a partner, you will count pedestrians in both directions if they are walking on your side of the street. At the end of each 15-minute period, total your tally marks in the space provided. 12

26 + Conducting the Count How to Count Pedestrians For pedestrians, please also notate if: They are using a wheelchair or other mobility device or are visually impaired (using a white cane or service animal) They are riding on a skateboard, scooter, or skates No Helmet Child 3 5

27 + Conducting the Count How to Count No Helmet Child Always count the number of people. Two people riding a tandem bike? Count as 2 bicyclists. A parent riding with a child in a seat or trailer? Count them as 2 bicyclists. A person pushing another person in a wheelchair or stroller? Count them as 2 pedestrians. A person walking while carrying a child? Count them as 2 pedestrians. Anyone traveling on something other than a bicycle is a pedestrian. If the person is using a wheelchair or skateboard, mark them as a pedestrian and also mark the correct box. If someone is walking their bike, count them as a pedestrian.

28 + Conducting the Count How to Count Multiple pass situation. A multiple pass is when someone walks (or rides) across your screenline, then time goes by (say 5 or 10 minutes) and then they come through again. In this case, you count them again. If time goes by and they walk (or ride) by a third time, count them again. If you see the same person 3 or more times, please notate that.

29 Brand + Conducting the Count How to Count Transit Users Some of your screenlines will be near bus stops. Your screenline should not be located between a bus stop and an intersection. If you are close to a bus stop, please mark it on your Cover Sheet. If people walk across your screen line to a bus stop, count them. If people get off a bus and then walk towards the intersection and do not cross your screenline, do not count them. Bus If they get off the bus and then walk away from the intersection and do cross your screenline, count them. California

31 + Conducting the Count How to Count Final Points Be Accurate Remember that the goal is to be accurate, not to turn in high numbers. Your numbers may be low at your location. That s okay.

32 + Drop-off Locations When you have completed all of your count shifts, please return all 9 of your count forms (1 Cover Sheet and 8 Count Sheets) Turn in your forms at one of our drop-off locations during normal business hours Monday-Friday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. Forms must be turned in by Friday 10/11 to be eligible for raffle.
