Two Stop/Go controls in place, with expected delays of up to twenty minutes each. Road construction is being undertaken between Fonteinjie ( 14, km39) and Wurasoord ( 14, km90.2). Caution should be exercised at construction vehicle entry and exiting positions. Between Nanaga and Grahamstown and Between the Great Fish River and the Green River roadworks are being undertaken Stop/Go controls will be in place with delays of 20 minutes at each location. 9 King Williams Town to East London (Gonubie) 60 km A 4-lane dual carriageway Short-term road narrowing for repairs could be encountered, especially between King Williams Town and East London. Siyam Rune East London (Gonubie) to Kei River 60 km The first 2km is a 4-lane dual carriageway. Thereafter it becomes a 2-lane single carriageway with wide paved shoulders. Climbing lanes are provided on some severe grades between kilometre mark (km) 30 and km 50 and between km 70 and km 80. The condition is fair to good, except for the section between km 22 and 27 where the riding quality is uneven. Road works are in progress between km 50 and km 70. Bi directional traffic will be maintained but STOP/GO closures may be encountered on occasion. Motorist are urged to obey the posted speed limits. The condition is good, but only centreline road making is in place up to Butterworth. Some yellow island markings are incomplete Reseal construction contract Commenced at the Kei-River to Toleni on November Motorist can expect lane closures and 20 minutes delays. Up to 4 closures may be possible. Caution should be Excised. Road surface failures / potholes may occur especially after heavy rains between the SitebeKomkhulu intersection and Mthatha. 10 Mthatha to Brooks Nek (provincial boundary) 170 km A 2 lane single carriageway with climbing lanes and paved shoulders. (Up to Mt. Frere no passing lanes between Mt. Frere and Brooks Nek) except the last 16km. The condition of the road between km 54 to km 70 is fair however routine maintenance may be encountered. Trevor Morgan Brookes Nek (provincial boundary) to Port Shepstone 135 km This first section of the in KZN is a two-lane single carriageway with narrow paved shoulders. Climbing lanes are provided on all the severe grades with the exception of a short 6 km section 26 km north of Kokstad. There are no construction works. Motorists to be aware of pedestrian activity between Harding and Port Shepstone. Amit Bhoora Port Shepstone to Durban (/N3 Interchange) 114 km The first 20 km is a single carriageway road with three lanes of traffic and narrow paved shoulders allowing overtaking opportunities. Thereafter the road becomes a four-lane dual carriageway with wide paved shoulders. The last 17 km leading into Durban has 3 lanes in each direction and is heavily trafficked. Construction work at the Moss Kolnick (new Amanzimtoti) Interchange commenced on 1 st February 2010 and will continue for a period of approximately 21 months. There will be deviations and reduced speeds. Contra-flow traffic will be enforced during various phases of the upgrading. There will be a reduced clearance limit for construction of the bridge deck over the. 11 Durban to Empangeni 162 km For 71 km, up to Stanger, the road is a four-lane dual carriageway. For the next 52 km, up to the Mtunzini Toll Plaza, the road is a four-lane single carriageway with wide paved shoulders. The remaining portion is also a single carriageway with alternating passing opportunities. A project for major improvements to Umgeni Road Interchange will commence in April There will be minimum disruptions to traffic on the, with only short term closures on slow lanes at tie ins of the directional ramps. Speed restrictions will be signposted. The underpass (M25) road at the KwaMashu Interchange will receive new lane configurations starting from May Motorists using the underpass and ramps will experience Stop/Go control delays. Duration for this work is 6 months. Night work may be possible. A contract for reconstruction of the Ballito Interchange commenced in January Speed restrictions will be signposted and traffic will be deviated onto the ramps during demolition of the existing bridge. A project for the rehabilitation of the for 3km north of Mtunzini plaza commenced in October 2010 and will continue until March There will be lane closures and reduced speeds will be enforced. A project for the replacement of paving at the Mvoti and Mtunzini toll plazas commenced in September 2010 and will continue until June Various, with last completion in Tony Mathebula / 24hr number (Durban to Umdloti) Bill Morris (Umdloti to Empangeni) Empangeni to Pongola 250 km A 2-lane single carriageway with paved shoulders. The construction of KwaMbonambi Interchange on 29 (km 36.2) commenced in July Traffic will be diverted onto on and off ramps. There will be restricted speed limits of 60km/hr. Duration of work February 2012 Gonie Govender Pongola to KwaZulu-Natal / Mpumalanga Border 38 km A 2-lane single carriageway road with gravel shoulders Under construction. From Pongola Town to the Mpumalanga Border there is current construction roadworks. There are at present four Stop/Go points each with a maximum 20 minute delay in each instance. Duration of work October 2011 Gonie Govender Mpumalanga Border north of Pongola to Piet Retief 44 km A two-lane single carriageway with narrow gravel shoulders. Fair to poor No Construction Piet Retief to Ermelo 117 km A two-lane single carriageway with narrow gravel shoulders. Fair to poor and uneven in places. 12 N3 N3 Durban to Cedara (Hilton) 85 km This entire section is a multi-laned dual carriageway. The first four km out of Durban carries heavy traffic with up to 5 lanes in each direction. The next 40 km, up to Cato Ridge, has 3 lanes in each direction with wide paved shoulders. The section between Cato Ridge and the end of the Pietermaritzburg Bypass (33 km) has a two-lane plus paved shoulder configuration, except on steep gradients to the east of Pietermaritzburg where climbing lanes are provided. The final 14 km to Howick incorporates the notorious, steeply graded Town Hill, which has 3 lanes with paved shoulders in each direction. Mostly good but extensive patching can be expected between Cato Ridge and Pietermaritzburg. Misty conditions occur frequently. Construction will commence in April 2011 at the Westville Viaduct for a steel pedestrian walkway. There will be shoulder closures on the northbound carriageway. Construction of a pedestrian bridge will commence in April 2011 south of the Mariannhill Toll Plaza. Motorists are urged to obey the speed restrictions. There may be shoulder closures and lane narrowing during the construction period. The contract will be completed in January Chota Motala There are narrowed lanes through the interchange construction area and restricted speed limits of 60km/hr 27 months (Chota Motala), 12 months (N3 mariannhill Pedestrian Bridge) Tony Mathebula / 24hr number N3 (The N3 Toll Route operated by N3 Toll Concession(Pty)Ltd) Cedara to Heidelberg 415 km This section of road is a public private partnership between SANRAL and the N3Toll Concession (Pty) Ltd. This toll route is a four-lane dual carriageway road between Cedara and the Tugela Toll Plaza. From the Tugela Toll Plaza to the Wilge Toll Plaza(Villiers) the road is a four-lane single carriageway with shoulders of varying width. The section between the Tugela Toll Plaza and Warden has at-grade intersections and access roads. The remainder of the road between Villiers and Heidelberg is a fourlane dual carriageway with paved shoulders. Current Construction works include: (i) Reseal between the Mngeni River (Howick) and Nottingham Road. The Commencement Date is September 2010 and the expected Completion Date is October (ii) Reseal between Escourt South Interchange and Frere Interchange. The commencement date is September 2011 and the expected completion date is March 2012 (iii) Reseal of Van Reenens Pass. The Commencement Date is September 2010 and the expected completion Date is October (iv) Rehabilitation between Blackspruit and 42 nd Hill in the Harrismith vicinity. The commencement Date is 1 November 2010 and the expected completion Date is October (v) Rehabilitation between Harrismith and Warden. The commencement date is July 2011 and the expected completion date is December (vi) Rehabilitation between Warden and Villiers. The commencement date is February 2011 and the expected completion date is December (vii) Ongoing routine road maintenance and litter collection. Through the construction zones, traffic may be restricted to one lane in each direction under reduced speed. During certain peak traffic periods, all four lanes will be open to traffic. Herman du Plessis N4 Pretoria to Hans Strydom Interchange 13.6 km A 6-lane dual carriageway road up to Simon Vermooten Interchange, thereafter a 4-lane dual carriage way. Philip Fourie N5 N4 Hans Strydom Interchange to Mozambique 304 km Four-lane dual carriageway from Hans Strydom Int. to Van Dyk s Drift. Thereafter, a four-lane undivided road to Wonderfontein, then 2 lanes undivided to the Mozambique border. No construction Trans African Concessionaires (TRAC) N5 Harrismith to Bethlehem 88 km A two-lane single carriageway with wide paved shoulders. There are overtaking opportunities where severe grades occur. Fair to good. No construction activity between Harrismith and Kestell, but the wet season results in increased maintenance activity. Additional teams have been increased to accommodate additional repairs with minimal disruption. A contract for the rehabilitation of the section between Kestell and Bethlehem commenced in January 2010 and three sections with STOP/Go conditions (and traffic lights at night) will be in operation at any one time. Expected completion date is April work ongoing. There are overtaking opportunities where severe grades occur. 16 N7 N6 Aliwal North to Bloemfontein 200 km Predominantly, a two- lane single carriageway with only the last 2.36km 6 and National Route 1 with wide paved shoulders. The rest of the route has gravel shoulders of varying widths. Only a 42km section between Reddersburg and Bloemfontein is in excellent condition. Between Aliwal North and Smithfield the road is in a good condition.be alert some potholes are developing between Aliwal North and Rouxville The rest of the route is satisfactory except for the section between Smithfield and Reddersburg which is currently being rehabilitated. Request road users to adhere to the permanent and temporary road signs erected, when passing through between Smithfield and Reddersburg. Expect some stop/ go areas on this section, which will be accompanied by traffic accommodation or closure road-signs Be patient, as the maintenance teams will be on road for Patching and other Routine Road activities. A contract for the rehabilitation of the 34km long section between Smithfield and Parys Hoogte (including the road through Smithfield) has commenced, with completion expected in December Two Stop/Go controls are in place and one deviation through Smithfield will be signposted. Construction works for the rehabilitation of the N6 7 from Parys Hoogte to Reddersburg commenced in August 2009 and will be completed in November There will be three road closures at any given time with Stop/Go signs at these sections. These closures may cause delays of approximately 20 minutes each. November 2011 (Parys Hoogte to Reddersburg).
