Sports will be held on Friday, April 22 in Arlington at the DoubleTree Crystal City Hotel. Auction items will be displayed during ride check-in and throughout the afternoon. Bidding will be closed at the beginning of the banquet and items will be available for pick up upon payment. Participant Parking World T.E.A.M. Sports has arranged with the DoubleTree Crystal City (300 Army Navy Dr., Arlington, VA) to allow riders to self-park their vehicles in the garage on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at a discounted rate. The hotel registration staff can provide participants with speciallycoded tickets for departure. Note: a valid credit or debit card is needed for exit. Northern route participants may park at no 5
charge at the Valley Forge Casino Resort (1160 First Ave., King of Prussia PA). Bike Inspection Each rider must have their bike inspected by the Face of America bike mechanic team. Every bike needs to be in good working order prior to riding on Saturday. We encourage you to bring your bike to a local shop for a full tune-up prior to April 22. Please be aware this inspection is NOT an opportunity for you to get a free tune-up! Our local bike shop mechanics are volunteering their time and if any supplies or services are necessary, you will be charged. You will be required to pay at the time of service. If you are unable to bring your bike with you to check-in and packet pick up on Friday, we will have mechanics available to inspect your bike on Saturday starting at 5:30 a.m. prior to the ride. Please keep in mind that you will need to allow additional time that morning if you decide to use the early morning inspection option. Etiquette During Ride VERY IMPORTANT! All riders should know that on the Face of America ride, able-bodied riders have the privilege of riding with our adaptive brothers and sisters. The ride pace will be controlled by a pace car that will move at an average speed of miles per hour. This pace is designed to allow those riders who are using adaptive bicycles (hand cycles and recumbent bikes) to comfortably keep up with the pace of the group. Be aware that NO RIDER may pass the pace car. Many of the adaptive bicycles will have push poles attached which allow ablebodied riders to assist the adaptive cyclist in climbing the steeper hills on the ride. Ablebodied cyclists must ask the adaptive cyclist if they want assistance BEFORE beginning to exert force on the push pole, as this force causes the adaptive bicycle to steer in a significantly different manner and can be dangerous. If you can help with providing a push for an adaptive cyclist on a regular basis, please see a Safety Marshal. If you do not have experience pushing a hand cycle, please do not attempt this task for your first time on a hill. Please talk to a Safety Marshal for guidance. On downhill sections of the course, adaptive bicycles descend at a greater speed than a traditional bicycle. They need this momentum to assist them in getting up the subsequent hill. Able-bodied cyclists in the area of an adaptive bicycle on a descent should move the right and should notify riders in front of them with the call hand cycle back (similar to the traditional call of car back when a car approaches a group from the rear). 6
Where possible, the route is marked on the road. Turns are marked both before and after the turn to warn the rider and then to confirm the rider is on the correct course. Skilled Motorcycle Marshals (Moto) in addition to the Safety Marshals will escort the ride. Motorcycle Marshals control traffic in all intersections that are not protected by local police. All riders are required to obey the instructions of both the Motorcycle Marshals and the Safety Marshals. Bicycle helmets are required to be worn at all times during the ride. Support and Gear (SAG) Vehicles SAG vehicles will trail the riders and pick up any who have a mechanical problems or who need a rest from riding. The SAG vehicles are not for the storage of extra clothing or gear. Any extra clothing or gear that is placed in the SAG vehicles is the responsibility of the rider. The drivers are not responsible for gear placed, or left, in the vehicles. A parent or guardian must accompany a youth-age rider in a SAG vehicle. The SAG vehicles are provided for the safety of all ride participants. If a Marshal or Motorcycle Marshal directs you into a SAG vehicle, you are required to do so. Place your bicycle in the accompanying trailer. You may leave the SAG vehicle at the next rest stop and return to the ride. Transportation of Participant Luggage World T.E.A.M. Sports will transport each participant s personal luggage during the ride. For the Classic Route, trucks will transport luggage from the DoubleTree Crystal City in Arlington to Frederick, MD as well as from Frederick, MD to Gettysburg, PA and back to Arlington. For the Northern Route, a truck will transport luggage from the Valley Forge Casino Resort to the Heritage Hotel in Lancaster to Gettysburg, PA and back to Valley Forge. Every rider must keep his or her luggage to one small bag. Each rider will need to make sure their bag is clearly identified and marked with their name, their route and their Saturday night hotel. Participant luggage will be available from the trucks upon arrival in Frederick and in Lancaster. Return luggage to the trucks on Sunday morning prior to ride departure. YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT YOUR LUGGAGE IS ON THE TRUCK. World T.E.A.M. Sports is not responsible for your lost or misplaced luggage. Frederick and Lancaster Lodging/ Transportation/Meals Every rider except our participating disabled athletes is responsible to secure his/her own lodging on Saturday night as well as dinner. 7
World T.E.A.M. Sports will provide shuttle service to select Frederick lodging properties for participants. If you made your hotel reservation outside of the host hotels on the Face of America web page and reaching the hotel will require transportation, you will need to make arrangements to get yourself to and from the ride. Saturday dinner is each rider s responsibility (disabled riders are invited to a group dinner). Restaurants are within walking distance of the hotels in Frederick and in Lancaster. A few properties also host restaurants and small convenience stores for guests. World T.E.A.M. Sports provides shuttle transportation from the host hotels in Frederick to nearby restaurants beginning at 6:00 p.m. Note the LAST shuttle will leave the restaurant shuttle stop at 9 p.m. If you miss this shuttle, World T.E.A.M. Sports is not responsible to get you back to your hotel. Family and Guests of Participants Be aware that family and friends are NOT allowed to follow the route of the ride by car. This is for the safety of the riders and to comply with event permits. World T.E.A.M. Sports will provide transportation for the caregivers/family members of our disabled veteran participants to join the ride at the Saturday lunch and at the Gettysburg finish on Sunday. All other family members and friends are requested to proceed directly to the end of the ride both days. Please be aware that any vehicle that is not part of the Face of America support team will be asked to leave the route. Due to the size of this ride it is very important that we regulate all participating vehicles along the route. On Sunday, family and friends are encouraged to travel directly to the finish line celebration at the Allstar Expo Complex. For family and friends who would like to explore Gettysburg prior to the arrival of the riders, plan on arriving at the complex prior to 1:30 p.m. Parking at the Expo Complex is on designated parking lots please do not park at the adjacent Eisenhower Hotel parking lot. Gettysburg Finish Celebration For riders who are participating in your first Face of America, the finish line celebration is an immensely satisfying way to end your journey. The ride ends in Gettysburg early Sunday afternoon at the Allstar Expo Complex, 2638 Emmitsburg Rd., Gettysburg, PA Family and friends are welcome and encouraged to participate in this celebration. The outdoor lunch with a variety of beverages will be served at the end of the 8
ride. Lunch is included for every rider. Additional lunch tickets for friends and family can be purchased online prior to April 22, at rider check-in, and in Gettysburg for $25.00 per person. has to be shipped by UPS will be sent at the rider s expense. Tickets are required for every participant and can be purchased online at the Face of America website for $25.00, and at rider check-in on Friday. Buses will depart the AllStar Expo Complex at approximately 4 p.m., with estimated arrival at the Arlington and Valley Forge hotels at 6 p.m. Each rider will be asked during check-in and registration on Friday if the bus service is still desired to provide an accurate seat count. (An early shuttle van for early airport departures will leave at 3 p.m. for Reagan National.) Riders are responsible for ensuring their luggage and bike is loaded onto a return truck and trailer prior to departing the Allstar Expo Complex on Sunday afternoon. World T.E.A.M. Mobile Phone Messaging During the Ride The Face of America provides a free cell phone texting service for participants during the ride for important information. Recognizing that emergency situations happen during rides that cover up to 55 miles during a day, World T.E.A.M. Sports offers an optional mobile messaging service for participants. This free service allows for nearly instant communication from ride leadership by cell phone messaging during the ride itself. 9
The mobile messaging service will also be used during the ride for any important scheduling updates or changes.
