2 Introduction The city of Munich has 1.4 Mio. residents Additionally the city has got daily commuters Cycling in Munich has a long tradition traffic planning follows the motto: compact urban green 80% of all residents have at least 1 bike More than 60% of all distances travelled are shorter than 5 km Therefore the bike is the ideal means of transport in Munich!
3 Cycling in numbers 2002 (MiDMuc) 2008 (MiDMuc) 2011 (Evaluation) Walking 28% 28,4% 27,2% Bicycle 10% 13,6% 17,4% MIT - driver 12% 10,1% 9,6% MIT - passenger 29% 27,0% 22,9% Public transport 21% 20,9% 22,8% Bicycle traffic has increased by 74 % within 9 years!

5 Velo-city conference 2007 in Munich The world s biggest cycling conference gave the topic a great boost delegates from 50 countries Big echo in the local media Intense public and political discussion about cycling in Munich
6 Bicycle masterplan July 2009: Munich s city council approves the new bicycle masterplan New staff in 4 departments dealing with cycling 11 people responsible for cycling in the city administration Triplication of the budget (1,5 4,5 Mio. /year) Goals of the masterplan: Increase bicycle-share (at least 17% in 2015) Improve traffic safety Definition of infrastructural projects to be realised in the following years Start of the marketing-campaign Integrating cycling into all fields of trafficdevelopment planning

9 Contraflow cycling and cycling streets Munich has got 20 bicycle streets in which cyclists have right of way Requirement: Bike must be dominant traffic Urban districts can make suggestions administration checks qualification Very simple and effective measure 290 oneway-streets are opened for contraflow cycling (41%) Goal is to open 50% (350) until 2015 Important and safe measure to improve the bike-network and comfort for cyclists
10 Signposting system for cyclists : 350 km of the main cycling routes have been signposted signs at about 750 junctions Good advertisement for cycling: Reminds people to cycle more often shows how short the distances are
11 Bicycle parking Concept for bicycle parking 2012: Statute about obligatory bicycle parking facilities More than bicycle racks in Munich Parking facilities/racks must be: easily accessible able to lock your bikeframe directly Avoid damage / vandalism Parking facilities at PT-stops, public buildings, etc.

13 Automatic counting points Seven points in the city where cyclists are counted the whole year Numbers show the continuous increase of cyclists in Munich Important for monitoring and evaluation of the bicycle masterplan
14 Cycling network 40% (500 km) Cycle tracks and cycle lanes 38% (450 km ) mixed traffic in calmed areas & tempo-30 zones 22% (260 km) parks, green areas, forests

19 Good cycling means and needs broad cycleways as cyclists have very different speeds (10 30 km/h). enough, easy accessible and safe parking facilities in public places. cycling tracks with a smooth surface (safety and comfort). possibility of direct turning in junctions with traffic lights. a good network of well connected routes. an attractive signposting and routing system. professional communication and information. to give cyclists the space they need.
