THE PRESIDENTS REPORT The Far North Coast Canoe Club has had another active year with numerous Come and Try Days, a comprehensive and interesting touring program in local rivers, regular club paddles, and active participation in the Northern Marathon Series and Paddle for Life from Lismore to Ballina. We hosted another marathon race at Rocky Mouth Creek at Woodburn The local SES recently moved out and the Lismore Council have allowed us the use of the entire ground floor area. Our club has pursued funding via Sport and Rec etc. and have just received a $ grant for equipment. We are still chasing funding for showers and change rooms for members. We will soon start building new boat racks for the increased number of members Kayaks. I was proud to be the president of the FNCCC for the last year. The committee as a group is like a well-oiled machine. We all do our individual jobs very well and combined to drive the club forward. Colin has taken the club Bilge to a new informative level. Barb dots all the I s and crosses the T s and makes the club look and feel professional. Marion s drive to get the job done drives the club events to happen no mater what and Bruce has the club balance to the cent. I am very pleased that all the committee are re elected. I truly believe that as a team we will take your club to a muchelevated level that will benefit all members. All the best for the future and thank you once again for chance to be the President for the Far North Coast Canoe Club. Regards, Garry Lee CLUB NEWS SINGLE EVENT ENTRY FEE NSW Canoeing has written a long letter to all clubs advising the situation about single event fees. This is the fee that is charged to non Australian Canoeing members who take part in certain club events. It covers administration and insurance costs. There is some good news and some bad news. The good news is that single event entry fee will no longer have to be charged for trialists. This means that non Australian Canoeing members who come to a Come & Try Day or who want to try out a recreational paddle organised by the club, will not need to pay this fee. Once non-members have attended three activities they will be required to join the club. The bad news is that the single event fees that NSW Canoeing charges the club has increased by $10 to $20. In the last year the club has been charging $16 for single event entrants as it is our normal practice to cover our own costs by multiplying NSW Canoeing costs by a factor of point six.. It will apply for when the club conducts races in the Northern Marathon Series and in the Paddle for Life event. In the case of races, when non Australian Canoeing members enter, the fee will be $32. However in the case of the Paddle for Life, as it is a charity, the club will not pass its mark up factor onto non Australian Canoeing members and offer this type of membership for the wholesale cost of $20. Of course remember that anyone who belongs to any Australian Canoeing affiliated club is not required to pay a single event entry fee for any event organised by Far North Coast Canoe Club. VOLUNTEER SMALL EQUIPMENT GRANT The club has been granted a small equipment grant worth $3000 from the Commonwealth Department of Families, Communities and Indigenous Affairs. We have gratefully accepted this grant and the monies will used to purchase: 1. A pressure washer to clean the ramp after flooding and prior to racing 2. The parts for a car trailer which can safely fit fiberglass kayaks which can then be towed by members vehicles to races and recreational events. The trailer will be constructed by club members on a second hand caravan base. 3. A wide diameter hose for hosing out the former SES section of the clubhouse. Thanks to Marion who applied for this grant. 2

MEMBERSHIP FEES NOW OVERDUE We would like to remind any members who joined in the 06/07 year that your membership fees are now overdue. The membership forms and fee tables can be found at or contact Bruce Taylor on for forms. If you do not pay your reminder fees by the end of the month we will assume that you do not wish to continue to be a member. COME & TRY DAY A Come and Try Day will be held on Saturday October 6 at 9.30am at the clubhouse. There will be a follow-up at the same time on the following Saturday which only those who attended the first day may attend. Please tell all your friends about this day so they can attend. It will appreciated if as many club members as possible can stay back to assist with our triers. UPSTREAM PADDLE WEBSITE The club has been contacted by the editor of Upstream Paddle magazine about getting some information on the Richmond and Wilsons Rivers. The editor plans to an article in this magazine which is available free on-line and is associated with the University of Queensland Canoe Club. The website, which can be found athttp:// is a fantastic resource. It provides a guide for recreational paddles in the Southern Queensland and Northern NSW regions. The on-line magazine can be downloaded from the website. It provides fabulous descriptions and pictures of paddling destinations all over the world but be warned, each issue takes a long time to download. REPORTS ON CLUB EVENTS BRUNSWICK HEADS RACE Sunday 19 August Story by Colin Cussel. Pictures by Bruce Taylor Fourteen members of our club braved this cold and wet day to take part in this race on the beautiful Brunswick River. Well done everyone! Here is what they said about their races Most competitors from our club entered the 12 kilometre distance. Phil Doumit entered the young men s vet K1 class. He was pleased to enter his K1 in this event and was happy with his time. John Caesar also entered this division, however he encountered seat troubles and was forced to go ashore for a while and make an adjustment. Marion Brownlie entered the mature vet women s K1 and was disappointed to misjudge the start. The starter gave confusing messages and Marion was doing a circle before the anticipated start time only to hear that the race had started while she was doubling back. Paul Yager entered the mature vet men s K1. He reported that he was in between the faster paddlers and slower paddlers over this distance, so he was in a lonely group of his own. Bruce Taylor also entered this division and was happy and pleased with his time. Rodney Rose entered the open men s TK1. Like Marion he misjudged the start but was happy with his position and time. Narina Donnelly entered the young vet women s TK1 division. She was pleased with her improving times but found the weather quite cold. Elspeth Berger entered the mature vet women s TK1. She was happy to be in the paddle and found the weather disappointing. I (Colin Cussel) entered the mature vet men s unrestricted. I was happy to be in the event. I started slowly and caught up to a nice person in a TK1 on the return leg and we had a nice chat for the rest of the race. In the 18 kilometres distance Tony Curtis entered the open men s K1. Marion tells me that Tony was able to keep pace with Daniel Jenkin for most of the race however he was not able to match him at the end. Vince Cross entered the Young vet men s K1 and was happy with his race. Glen Curtis and Mark Yager entered the open men s K2 and were extremely please with the boat. Barbara Davies entered the mature vet women s TK1. She had a long and lonely race but finished ahead of the TK2 s that she often shadows. Well done everyone for competing on such a dreadful day. Every entry gains extra points for our club. 3

HAMBURGER KANU CLUB Story and Pictures by Colin Cussel When people think of the city of Hamburg, they think of the large, busy port on the Elbe River, probably the biggest in Europe. However most don t realise that the CBD and inner suburbs of Hamburg surround a large lake system, the Alster, which was formed by damming a side river of the Elbe. Many canals extend from the Alster through the suburbs of Hamburg. Indeed Hamburg is sometimes called, The Venice of the North. This all makes for a wonderful recreational water sport area. Hamburgers take to the Alster in all forms of non motorised watercraft in the summer months. There lots of sailing, canoeing of all forms, rowing and dragon boat racing. There are many aquatic clubs in Hamburg and most of them have a canoeing section. In my recent trip to Europe, I found two very large canoe only clubs in Hamburg and both were receptive to me joining them for a paddle. I showed up very shyly at the Hamburger Kanu Club at the 5.45pm on a balmy 23 summer s day. The club had hundreds of canoes and kayaks of all kinds. I had arranged with Björn, the club coach to join in a paddle. Björn spoke good English but some things get lost in translation when you communicate by and sms. In our communication prior to coming, he had asked me how fit I was, they were preparing for a tour in Denmark, 12 kilometres. When I first accepted I thought, great, they are going for a recreational tour in Denmark which is only 2 hours away. When I arrived I soon realised that what I had accepted to join was a 12 kilometre training session in K1 s with tempo, as Björn put it. They were training for the 100 kilometre plus Tour de Gudena or race (like the Tour de France) to be held in Denmark in September, which many national canoe teams enter. (Check it out at ) I looked across the 1 kilometre wide lake with its afternoon waves and the very narrow K1 I was offered and politely communicated that I would not be able to join them. Björn hastily arranged for a slower paddler, Michael to lead me around their training course. They offered me a Ranger, which reminded me a lot of Grafton Paddlesport s Wizard. He asked me whether I used a left or right handed paddle. I d never heard of a left handed paddle. They were all wearing singlets and laughed at my long sleeved FNCCC shirt. It was 23 after all, in this city very close to the 54 th parallel North of the equator. (Lismore is closer to 29 th parallel South) I followed Michael across the lake and through many canals that wound their way past parks, apartment buildings, restaurants, cafes, light industrial areas, aquatic clubs of all kinds and the backyards of the well-to-do of Hamburg. He was only slightly faster than me and I could keep up quite well on the 12 kilometre course. Between Michael s English and my German I managed to work out that he came from one a one canoe club town in the old East Germany. His true love was dragon boat racing and he seemed to know every dragon boat crew we passed. He was also training for the Tour de Gudena and said he was able to enter his more stable Ranger in a shorter 50 kilometre course. The event is conducted over 2 days and there are quite large waves on the course. When we went to return across the lake he warned me of large waves. Between his English and my German I didn t quite understand him especially as we were on the gentle side of the lake. However the word, freak wave is the same in any 4

language and I heard him say this quite clearly. What he meant was that the wind waves move across the lake and rebound off the distant wall in an amplified manner. Fortunately they weren t too bad although it was a little rocky at one stage. Spending a few hours with a European canoe club made me realise how small the sport is in Australia. This club had many crafts of all kinds. They even raced Canadians. They had a large touring or Wanderpaddel section. One whitewater canoeist I met was proudly showing a photograph of himself descending a 6 metre sheer drop. However at least we can paddle all year round. When I asked Michael what he did in winter he replied, I run on the lake. NORTHERN MARATHON SERIES PRESENTATION NIGHT Saturday 15 September, dinner at 6.00 pm, presentations at 7.30 pm Currumbin Creek Tavern, cnr Currumbin Creek Road and Traders Way BAGOTVILLE CAMPOVER - Sat/Sun 29/30 September It's on again!! Campover at James place in Broadwater (88 Bagotville Rd, Broadwater). High Tide Sat 11.00am and HT Sun 11.50am. We could paddle the Barrage to Tuckean on Saturday and paddle to Wardell Pub for lunch with a detour through the beautiful mangroves (which can't be done on a low tide). Car shuffles can be organised to avoid the return paddle (last year the conditions changed dramatically while we had lunch and cars shuffles would have been a good idea) and muddy exits. Also PFD's are recommended especially for tippy/tippsy paddlers and poor swimmers!! A muddy exit is guaranteed at James place, so if you want to avoid it consider car shuffles from the Barrage on Sat and Wardell Pub or Broadwater Bridge on Sun. SATURDAY Barrage to Tuckean, Plan to leave James place by 11 am (bring packed lunch). Should be back about 4pm in time to set-up tents before dark and get a BBQ going for dinner, if conditions suitable we can light the fire (bring marshmallows to toast). SUNDAY Wake up for a BBQ breakie and set off for a paddle to Wardell (about 30km return) investigating little pockets which disappear into mangroves (bring RID just in case) along the way. Lunch at Wardell pub and then paddle back/car shuffle to James, should finish mid afternoon. MONDAY Anyone who would like to stay longer are welcome to stay Sunday night as well... no problems... maybe can do a longer paddle??? Bring food, drink, and change of clothes, tent and other camping stuff, RID, money for pub. PFD's. Warning, the exit on both occasions back at James will be muddy as the tide will be low. If coming please let James and Naomi know, call

Business Arising:- Marion advised that she is proposing that the Woodburn Race be held on 10/4/2007 and the Lismore Race on 15/8/2007 in the NMS for 2007 There was discussion about the Waterways Licenses that will be needed and it was decided to apply for exclusive use of a section of waterway at Woodburn to make the race start less crowded with skiers. It was also decided to 6

put a notice up in the park and in the local shops to advise people that the race will be held, so that they might choose not to use the park on that day. Bruce is still to buy the steel for the racks. There was discussion about the purchase of polo shirts or t-shirts for club members and Glen is to enquire locally of Gentle Giants about costs for a quantity of shirts that the club could sell to members. There was discussion about our reasons for not applying to Lismore City Council at this time under their Urban Sportground Development Fund. Essentially it created compromises with the current application to the Dept Sport and Rec Capital Assistance Grant and so was not pursued at this time. Barb sent the Annual Report to NSW Canoeing. Treasurer s Report:- Bruce reiterated his report given at the AGM and informed he has sent the required annual return to Fair Trading. General Business:- There was discussion about our local Paddle for Life and the implications of the increased Single Event fees on this event. It was decided that there was little option but to pass on the $10 increase in fee to prospective paddlers in this event. Bruce is to inform Tim Limbert. There was discussion about Come and Try Days and it was decided to continue to hold them after Saturday morning paddles so members can become involved and help out. Next Come and Try set for October 6 th with a follow-up on October 13 th at 9.30am. Single Event insurance is no longer required for Come and Try Days but triers must provide demographic information so we will continue to have them fill out the usual form and pay the same fee for the exercise. There was discussion about the Volunteer Small Equipment Grant. Garry is to demonstrate and quote on a pressure cleaning machine and Denise Cooper is designing a suitable club trailer. It was decided to establish a committee to oversee the spending of these funds and the building of the trailer. A plumber will quote on the necessary fittings and installation of the fire hose. It was decided to put off a decision on the future use of the existing club trailer until the new one is built. Currently the old trailer is frequently used by Richmond River High students and is housed at the school. There was discussion about the recent AGM and it was agreed that the Committee missed an opportunity to showcase the year s achievements and inform members of future plans. Garry is to provide a written President s report to update members. There was discussion about the gift provided by the Australian Sports Commission for clubs to give to worthy volunteers to thank them for their contribution. It was decided to give this gift to Denise Cooper in appreciation of her efforts in coaching several club members with a view to passing on these training tips to other members and for her effort in designing the club trailer. Meeting ended 9.05pm 7
