25 A tame kaka held by a ring (poria) on its leg calls from its perch (hoko) to avract other birds for capture.

26 Waka Kererū (Waikaremoana) Kererū (pigeons) gather in early winter to feed on ripe miro berries. Troughs of water were placed high in the trees for the thirsty birds, aker other sources of water nearby were covered over. To drink, they must put their heads through a noose.

27 Matu Long spears were used to take forest birds such as Kereru, tui and Kaka. Most spears were 4 to 6 meters long, but could be up to 10 meters. The preferred Nmber was tawa which splits easily with straight grain. The resinous heartwood of Kahakatea or Rimu was also used. The points made of bone, hardwood or a snngray barb was lashed to the end. Birds were taken at their best as they fed on seasonally available berries and nectar baring flowers. The hunter worked from the ground or pla[orm in tall trees. The spear was eased into place then jabbed upwards

The most favoured birds were kereru (wood pigeons), NN (muvonbirds, or sooty shearwaters), and tui, kaka, kakapo and kea (parakeets). Dogs may also have been used to hunt for the flightless birds such as weka (woodhens) and kiwi.
