2 welcome Welcome to another season at Lake Sebago!! The camp opens on May 1 with a work weekend on April 29 and 30 from 11 to 3 pm to help get the camp ready for the season. There are many events planned for this season so please keep checking at the Pavilion and on the Google site ( for the details. Don t forget to renew your ACA membership by April 28 since you must be an ACA member to come to the lake. Not much has changed: sign in every day, purchase a season pass or pay the daily fees, guests may come into camp 1-2 times and then they need to join the ACA (pay those guest fees ), pick up the chain link fence on Seven Lakes Drive (better yet, lock it), no pets allowed in camp. Remember, this is your camp. What you put into it is what you will get out of it. I look forward to another successful camp season. new gate Camp Director, Linda Peterson Camp Opening Workday Come to the camp on Sat. April 29 and Sun. April 30 to help set the camp up for the upcoming season. Work hours are 11a.m. 3p.m. Work to be done includes: setting up the boat docks taking everything out of the meeting room and putting it back in place at the Pavilion giving the bathrooms a good cleaning giving the Pavilion a good cleaning raking the leaves off the paths cleaning the rental cabins helping to move abandoned boats to the abandoned boat rack assisting facility holders where ever needed Camp Potluck will be held on Sat. April 29 at 6:30 pm Please note work performed in camp during these days will count toward facility holders' 15 hour work requirement. However if a facility holder is working on his/her own cabin/tent platform that will NOT count toward the 15 hour work requirement. If you are helping someone else with their facility please get Linda's approval first. There is now a second locked chain across the road leading to our ACA camp, just after the fork to the ADK camp. During the open season, the lock opens with the same key as the first gate at Seven Lakes Drive. Please lock the gate upon entering and leaving camp, just like the first gate. This barrier increases our security and lets everyone know that this is a private camp for ACA members only! And please be careful when driving in the dark, as it is easy to forget that there is a NEW GATE! We have installed reflectors on both sides, but please be aware of possible vehicle, biker and hiker traffic, as the road turnoffs in that area are, well, interesting. Thanks for supporting this improvement to our awesome camp! Buildings and Grounds, Jeff Kraus ACA Camp Meeting and potluck Saturday, May 20 3pm with Potluck to follow at the Pavilion Come and not only meet the camp committee members but also find out all that is planned this season at the lake. 7 2017 Conservation Committee Activities Invasives Clean-up The NY/NJ Trail Conference Invasives Strike Force has been working closely with our camp to clear one of the most damaging invasive plants, Berberis, from our land. In three organized workdays in 2015 and 2016, ACA and ADK volunteers came together and enthusiastically worked many hours, using heavy clippers and wearing protective goggles, clearing our land. We cleared the Berberis from our entrance at Seven Lakes Drive, along the road to the fork, and into our respective camps. Berberis and other invasives are harmful to the entire ecosystem they invade. Invasives can overtake parks, trails, and bodies of water, making activities like hiking and boating impossible. We are planning to continue to study and better understand the spread of invasive plants in our park, especially along our trail corridors. Our volunteer trail crews are seeking to maintain the integrity of the land and prevent these invasive species from overtaking and spreading into un-invaded areas. All are invited to join our conservation efforts this summer. Lakes and rivers around the country have been overtaken by invasives choking their waters. We want to continue to protect Lake Sebago by, for example, setting up washing stations where boats can be sponged and hosed down prior to launching off our docks. Please plan on coming to a workshop with Samantha, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 24, 2017 at 1:00 in the afternoon, where we will, among other activities, identify and survey aqua invasives from our boats. Partnering with Riverkeeper One of ACA s top priorities is its Stream-to- Sea Initiative to clean up shorelines before trash ends up in our rivers and oceans. Riverkeeper and the ACA have similar goals of maintaining the health of our waters by preventing plastics and garbage from contaminating our waterways. The ACA partnered the last three years with Riverkeeper by providing volunteers for Riverkeeper Sweep to fulfill our Stream-to- Sea Initiative. Last Spring, Riverskeeper Sweep had 2,200 volunteers remove 40 tons of trash from along the Hudson River and planted 1,150 trees and grasses. This year, there are over 100 shoreline sites along the Hudson from Brooklyn to North of Albany needing volunteers. On April 1, volunteer registration will open at riverkeeper.org/sweep. Some sites need volunteers with canoes and kayaks. When you register, please write ACA in the box provided so that we can know how many ACA members volunteered. Riverkeeper Sweep will be on Saturday, May 6, 2017, starting at 9:00 am. Director of Conservation Kathleen O Sullivan Aquatic Invasives Last summer, the Clearwater Aquatic Invasives Program Coordinator, Samantha Espstein, presented a program that introduced our members to the issue of aqua invasives. Samantha brought samples of aquatic invasives and taught us how to survey for, identify, and prevent the spread of these invasives. We received special rakes which we all shared with our aqua invasives teams as we surveyed our lake all summer. CanoeSPORT page 6
