Outrigger Caloundra Canoe Club Information and Welcome Pack Thank you for expressing an interest in outrigger canoeing and our club. This information will help you prepare for your first session and address some of your questions about joining the club.
About Us Outrigger Caloundra offers recreational and competitive opportunities to get active on the water. Outrigging is a sport for life that advocates respect for team mates, our canoes and the ocean. Incorporated 1997 Membership 40 members aged from 30 to 74 Assets 2 x Elite Outrigger 6 seater race canoes 1 x Force Five 6 seater training canoe 3 x Mirage 6 seater training canoes 4 x 2 seater canoes Motto Our members strive to eat better, live healthier, be happier and we support each others journey to achieve this Results st National Marathon Titles Open Women 10km 3rd Hamilton Island Open Mixed 42km nd National Sprints Open Women 1500m 2nd National Marathon Titles 10km 2016 Goals Compete in the Sydney Harbour Challenge (Feb) Compete in the National Marathon Titles (May) Compete in the Gold Coast Cup (June) Compete in Vaka Eiva, Cook Islands (Nov)
Training Times We meet at the club house every 7am during the warmer months (8am in winter from June to August) and every Tuesday and Thursday 4:15pm. We like to hit the water 15 minutes after arrival and a training session can be anywhere from 1 2 hours long. It takes about 15 minutes to rinse the canoes and paddles at the end of the session so you should also allow time for this. Where Short St, Golden Beach, Caloundra (turn off opposite the Water Park at Oaks Oasis). Parking is available and you will see our club house next to the boat ramp. What to Bring Hat, clothes you don t mind getting wet, towel for your car, water bottle, water/surf booties or reef shoes (optional but highly recommended to avoid marine stings and cuts). We provide the paddles until you decide to purchase your own. Free trial period You are able to train with the club for free for up to 6 weeks before deciding if you would like to join the club and our national governing body, the Australian Outrigger Canoe Racing Association (AOCRA).
Introduction to paddling within your first 6 weeks You will be taken through the traditions, art, skill and safety elements of paddling an outrigger canoe. There are a number of do s and dont s associated with the ancient sport of paddling! Most of these relate to respect for our environment, the canoe and our team. We will show you the paddling stroke and break down each part to teach you how to minimise injuries and maximise power. Each seat in the canoe from 1 to 6 has a unique responsibility and job. We will rotate you through different seats in the canoe to teach you how to call the huts, set the pace, assist the steerer or save your canoe from a huli (capsize). You will also need to demonstrate that you are able to swim 400m unassisted, tread water for 4 minutes and capable of dealing with a huli.
Optional competitive paddling Most of our club members are best described as social paddlers who love to compete. The race season is between November and June and we compete anywhere from Sydney to Hamilton Island. There are also a number of international races including high profile events in Hawaii and the Cook Islands. Sprints are between 500m and 1500m. Some are in a straight line and others involve a hair-pin turn. Short course races are between 8 and 12km (this takes approx. 40 to 80 minutes). Long course races are between 14 and 22 km (these races take approx. 1 to 2 hrs). We also compete in change-over races with a team of 10 paddlers. These races are between 35 and 42km (depending on conditions, race times vary from 3 to 4 hrs). Paddlers jump in and out of a moving canoe on a rotational basis and are accompanied by a motorised support boat. During this time we do high intensity training on weekdays and longer endurance paddles on Sundays. While everyone loves winning, this is not our primary objective! We strive to paddle hard, paddle smart and paddle with respect for our team. If this leads to a podium finish, that s just icing on the cake! During the off season between July and October, we enjoy more leisurely paddles and even whale watching! Most of these sessions include a break on Bribie Is. and a swim.
Costs and responsibilities of joining the club Club membership for your first year is $100 ($200 thereafter). This subsidised rate is in place to help you purchase your own paddle (up to $350). You will also need to join AOCRA. This costs $70 per year. Club members are also required to assist with fundraising efforts to help maintain canoes and cover club related overheads. We raffle off a meat tray every Sunday during lunch at the Caloundra Power Boat Club. The more members in the club, the less you have to do it. At current membership levels, you will be asked to give up 1-2 hours of your Sunday, three times a year. We are a not-for-profit club; 100% of funds raised go directly back to the club for the benefit of all members. You will also be called upon to help with club working bees up to twice a year.
