1 May 2018 newsletter General Notices Congratulations to Nigel Unwin 6th overall and 1st in the over 50 s. At the Brigg Bomber Quadrathlon National Championships/World Cup event held on May 26 th. Consisting of 1.5km swim, 7 Km kayak, 36 Km bike and 10 Km run. Nigel s overall time was 2 hrs 52 min. A big thank you to: James, Sarah, Carol, John and Mike for rounding up some 300 ducks on bank holiday Monday for the annual Lion s Club duck race. All were safely rounded up. Learn to Paddle courses Our Learn to Paddle three week courses are well under way, the May course was well attended with 14 paddlers, there were surprisingly very few capsizes. The second course starts on 7 th June with 14 paddlers booked and the 3 rd course starts on July 5 th is almost fully booked. The 4 th course is in September. The coaches are Stan, Mike and John E. Assistant coaches are Simon K and John K. With this hot weather please take care to avoid people swimming in the river. We have a report of an incident of a canoeist narrowly missing a person swimming down at Avoncliff. We are still investigating this and whether a club member was involved. Parking at Barton Farm Country Park. We are constantly being harassed about our parking opposite the club. Please do not abuse our right, it is solely for the purpose of loading and unloading of boats and equipment. At all other time please park outside the park and please avoid parking on the grassed areas. Your Safety! With local thunder storms around please take care, you should and get off the water as quickly as possible and away from trees. Carbon blades are good lightning conductors! Paddling technique A Lawler Slider has been ordered to help our coaches with the instruction of paddling technique, see YouTube link. Do you need some new paddles? Paul Fielding from Taunton CC who is training with us at the moment is thinking or ordering a batch of high spec wing paddles from the factory in China and if anyone is interested they should text him on for further details. He is just buying a few pairs for himself but can add to his order if you are looking for a new paddle. A

2 number of club members paddle with these paddles ( Stan has a few sets if you want to look at them ) which are made in the same factory as the Epic Wing paddle, but somewhat cheaper! Lost Wedding Ring Vicky has lost her wedding ring last seen in the ladies changing room on on Wednesday 23rd May. I think it fell out of my bag after the session. It is a thin silver band with small diamonds all the way round. If you have seen it please let me know. Thanks Welcome to new members Keith Potter an experience marathon and Div 2 slalom paddler. Welcome back to: George Barlow, David and Louis Mars. Club Events Reading K4 Race - 10th June We have a number of crew entering the Reading K4 race next weekend. Alana Peake is booking the pub in Caversham for lunch after the race. If you are going and are interested please speak to Alana this week or Vicky and I ll pass the numbers on. Please make a note for all regular and less experienced paddlers, on Saturday June 16 th at 10am, be prepared to get wet for a Capsize and Rescue drill After our normal club session. The session will be run by John Escott. We are hoping that the water will be warm! Please offer your support we need your help 30 th June and 1 st July, our annual race weekend, the Classic Bath to Bradford and Hasler Circuit Race. A number of members have already offered their help. To enable us to run the two races we need a minimum of 12 volunteers. Please see attachment or job list posted on the notice board. If you can help please see either: James E, Tom S and Stan. Bradford on Avon Race weekend 30 th June and 1 st July. For race detail please see attachment. To gain as many Hasler points as possible and show our true strength, we would like for everybody who can to race for the club on Sunday 1 th July. If you have any questions on this, please speak to James Escott. As we are getting closer to the weekend itself, it is also a good time to start thinking about booking a club K2 should you need one for

3 the weekend. If you would like to use a club K2, please discuss with James Escott or Simon Kay as to the availability of boats. A pre-race paddle up the course from Bath is planned for Thursday evening the 28th June. (To be confirmed) This enables us to check the course and make sure an accurate briefing is given for the Bath to Bradford Race on 30 th June. If you are wishing to come, then please contact Stan in advance so that transport arrangements can be made. The paddle up is around 8 miles and K1 s or K2 s are welcome. Start will be at Bathampton and end will be at the club. Weekly Training Sessions Monday: Paddle on the water at 5:30pm Tuesday: Paddle on the water at 5:30pm Wednesday: Run at 5:00pm (6km) and 5:30pm (3km), then paddle on the water at 6:00pm Club 5km Time trial - 1st Wednesday of every month followed by food at the Lock Inn - all welcome Thursday: Gym/Paddle at 5:30pm (at the clubhouse) Below is the Google Docs link to the weekly training plan: The two club sessions are still Saturday at 9am and Wednesday at 6pm, the plan is to do some mixed ability K2 sessions on Wednesday evenings all members are welcome. For paddlers wanting to be involved in the Wednesday training sessions should be down changed and ready to take part by 5.50pm for either K2 or K1 sessions. Those members wishing to run prior to paddling should be down for 5pm for the Turleigh run and or 5.30 for the Avoncliff run. Race/Event Reports Duathlon May 12 th Thank you to all those who volunteered to help run the Duathlon in May and congratulations to those who finished the course. It was a great morning for it and we were also joined by some new faces, and hopefully we will see more people compete at the next one. Hopefully you have all seen your results by now but if not please let me know. The next Duathlon is scheduled for July 14 th however this may be moved to 15 th, we hope to see more of you there.

4 Tamar Hasler 20 th May Congratulations to those who travelled down to the Tamar hasler in Calstock on 20 th May. There may have been only 5 paddlers from BOA however we managed to earn 5 club points, we are waiting to see where the club sits in the season so far. The stand out result from the weekend was Tom Simmons winning Div 2 K1. Hasler Series Bradford Weekend To Ensure that the club qualifies for the Hasler Finals in September I am calling all members to turn up to race at our own race on Sunday 1 st July. If you have not raced before, please talk to James Escott or Tom Simmons and we can discuss this with you. The idea would be to spread our entries out between K1s and K2s to maximise club points, as a matter of pride (and qualifying for the finals) we need to win the maximum 10 club points.
