2 DON T FORGET THERE IS STILL TIME..MARYLAND 4-H DAY AT CAMDEN YARDS DELMARVA CHICKEN FESTIVAL Come watch the Orioles vs. the Tampa Bay Rays on June 29 th at 1:35pm. You will support Maryland 4-H and we will have our own Green & White 4-H section. It will be in the Upper Reserve: $13.00 (105 service charge per ticket too) in Sections , rows Go to and select a quantity of tickets, create a Baltimore Orioles ticket account and purchase and print your tickets. A portion of the sales goes to Maryland 4-H. Help!!!! We are in desperate need of volunteers to work the soda booths at the Delmarva Chicken Festival. The way it will work is that we have an adult and 2 or 3 4-H members in each of four booths. They will sell the sodas all day in two, 5 1/2 to 6 hour time slots. The time slots are 9:00-3:00 and 2:30-8:00. 4-H is the only group allowed to sell the bottled sodas and water. The truck attendant will be behind the horse barn with the tractor trailer that contains the cases of soda. This will need to be an adult able to remove the cases and keep them on ice. We ll have runners on a golf cart to come back and get sodas for re-filling the booths. We will have 2 booths that are in the same spot both days. We will have 2 more booths that may change location on the 2 nd day. Currently, we have 15 4-H Clubs. The time slots needed for Friday and Saturday, June 20 & 21, are 5 ½ to 6 hour slots. There are at least 16 (8 each day) slots that need to be filled. We also need a truck attendant for 4 (2 each day) slots. Currently, we have Farm to Market signed up for Friday afternoon. On Saturday, we have the Growing Together Club, Tuckahoe Trailblazers, Shooting Stars and Cloverleaf down for the first shift, 9:00-3:00. These clubs signed up at the last leaders meeting. Chris and Sally will be working each day, but we still need all of you to help. Some clubs will need to take more than one slot since we have 15 clubs and 16 slots, not including the truck attendant. This is a HUGE event and will be attended by thousands of people. This is the last Delmarva Chicken Festival that will be held. It will be a very lucrative fundraiser for our county 4-H program. Everyone is expected to help. Please let us know when you can help. 3 AND WE HAVE A WINNER!!! When the Park Board was holding their Barbeque Dinner Fundraiser, all of the clubs were asked to sell tickets. The club with the most sales was to win a pizza party for their club. Our new club, the Clover Seeds, leader, Lori O Connell was our top seller. The Go Getters Club was close behind them in second place. Thank you to all of the clubs who sold tickets. It was a very successful fundraiser and we sold ALL of the dinners! Thanks again to everyone. IT S RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER.QUEEN ANNE S COUNTY FAIR The fair website is now available for class information and general knowledge. The address is: queenannescofair.com. STATE 4-H PUBLIC SPEAKING RESULTS A HUGE congratulation s goes to Ashlynn Conley for winning the Junior Reserve Champion Extemporaneous Speech at the Maryland State Communications Contest! 4 2014 FASHION REVUE We are looking for 4-Hers who would like to be in the Fashion Revue. It is open to all 4-Hers male, female and clovers on up. The Fashion Revue will be held at the Fair on Wednesday August 6 th at 7:00pm. All of the awards will be given out during that time. This is an event that is judged prior to the fair. The judging will be held on Sunday, August 3 rd beginning at 2:00pm. All participants will have an interview with a pair of judges and then proceed to another pair of judges who will judge them on the runway. This is different from previous years where all interviews were done and followed by all runway together. The show at the fair will be the only place where everyone will do the runway as a show. A list of classes is attached. You may enter either a constructed outfit (one you made) or a ready-to-wear outfit (one you bought). The emphasis on the ready-to-wear outfit will be the economic cost of the garment and its use. On the constructed garment, the construction of the garment is important. On all outfits, the fit and appropriateness of the garment and the poise and appearance of the model are judged. We have a graduate from the Paul Mitchell Cosmetology School who will hold a workshop on hair and make-up on Sunday, June 22 nd. The workshop will begin at 2:00 and will be held at the Extension Office. If you would like to participate in the workshop, please call the Extension Office ( ) by June 13 th to register. We will be scheduling another workshop to work on scripts and learn/practice the runway walk. At that time, we will also plan the show for the fair. Participants will receive ribbons and awards from the fair. Registrations to participate in the Fashion Revue (enclosed with the class list) will be due in the Extension Office by July 11 th. We hope you join us to have fun with fashion! ANIMAL SCIENCE Animal Ownership Deadlines There has been a lot of confusion about the tagging and weigh in policy for SWINE: Because of the PEDV swine disease 4-H cancelled any co-mingling of swine for tagging and weigh-ins. If you have market hogs you should have already contacted the 4-H office to notify us of how many hogs you have and to get on the schedule to have us tag your hogs. If you have not called you must do so by June 15 or your hogs will not be eligible to show. MDA is requiring that all swine (breeding stock as well as market hogs) be tagged with official USDA tags in order for a veterinarian to issue a Certificate of Veterinary Inspection (CVI) also better known as health papers. Swine producers should be tagging their animals with USDA premise tags prior to selling them to 4-H members. If you purchased your hog from a breeder and they do not have an official USDA tag they will need to have one prior to you getting health papers. If you have questions call Chris Johnston Market Lambs and Market Goats: Should have been tagged at Eastern Shore Spring Show or County tagging on June 2. Feeder Calves and Commercial Heifers: Should have been Tagged by June 1 Breeding Stock: Commercial (crossbreds) used for breeding either males or females should have been tagged by June 1 st, Purebred breeding stock should have breed association registration papers in the 4-H members name ONLY not in farm or family name by July 1 st.

5 MARYLAND 4-H ON LINE ANIMAL HUSBANDRY & QUALITY ASSURANCE (AH&QA) PROGRAM The Maryland 4-H Animal Husbandry & Quality Assurance (AH&QA) Program is an on-line training program which enables youth to fulfill the Quality Assurance training requirement via internet from their home, school or local library. This program is offered to help youth who participate in 4-H animal projects in Maryland learn about the importance of caring for, grooming and showing their animals in safe and ethical ways. The program has two levels, a Junior Level for members who are ages 8-10 and an Intermediate/Senior Level for members who are ages Program Requirements All 4-H members enrolled in alpacas, beef, dairy, goats, horse and pony, llamas, poultry, sheep, swine and rabbits are required complete the training to be eligible to exhibit their project animals in 2014 Maryland County 4-H and State 4-H Shows. 4-Hers are required to complete the on-line training program when they reach each 4-H age division (Juniors (ages 8-10), Intermediates (ages 11-13), Seniors (ages 14-18) all as of January 1 of the current year) OR when as Intermediates and Seniors, they are new to an animal science project listed above. Thus, each time a member enters a new age division, they will be required to complete the training PLUS if an Intermediate or Senior 4-H member chooses to show a new species since last completing the program within an age division they must return to program and complete the program for the new species area. There are two different Levels to the program. Members will be automatically taken to the appropriate Level according to the birthdate entered on the registration screen: o Junior AH&QA Level There is one part to the Junior Level. There is not species specific information as in the Intermediate and o Senior Level. Intermediate and Senior AH&QA Level There are two parts to the Intermediate and Senior Level: Part 1 is completed by all intermediate and senior members. Part 2 contains specific information for each animal species - members will need to complete Part 2 of the program for each specie project they are enrolled in and wish to exhibit. For 2014, members will have access to the AH&QA program from March 15 through July 31st. Members MUST complete the AH&QA training no later than July 31 st. Counties may establish a completion deadline earlier than July 31 to meet the needs of the local program. Upon registering for the program members are assigned a PASSCODE. Passcodes from 2013 remain valid. Members who were assigned a passcode prior to 2013 will need to register for a new Passcode for Information to Help You Successfully Complete the Maryland 4-H AH&QA Program: Members may access the AH&QA program at: or via a link on the Animal Science Program Resources page of the Maryland 4-H website at The AH&QA program has voice narration, so the material is shared in written and oral form. Members will be asked to respond to questions to evaluate knowledge at different points during the program. When members register for the program, they will be provided a unique Passcode. Members should write their Passcode down and keep it in a safe place! They will be asked to enter their passcode when responding to the Check Your Knowledge and What I Learned quizzes.

6 The program takes about 45 minutes for Juniors to complete and minutes for Intermediates and Seniors to complete. If a member needs to stop the AH&QA training in the middle of the program, he or she may return to the program where they left off by entering their Passcode on Page 1 of the program. A member may log out at any point by clicking on the Log Out? link underneath each slide. A member must be LOGGED IN for the system to track their progress and record their completion of the program. There is a note at the bottom of each slide indicating the member s status. When logged in, the message will read Welcome, [Member s Name]. Log out?. If the member is not logged in correctly, the message will read You are not currently logged in. Your progress will NOT be recorded. Upon completion of the Junior Level or the Intermediate/Senior Level individual specie sections, members will have an opportunity to print a Certificate of Completion for their records. It is suggested that members keep the Certificate of Completion with their animal health papers (CVI forms), registration papers and other important animal records. If a member is correctly logged in, the Certificate of Completion will automatically fill in the member s name and date of completion. A blank Certificate of Completion would indicate that the member was not correctly logged in. Each member s progress will be kept in a statewide database and their County 4-H staff will receive notification that they have completed the AH&QA training. Questions about the program may be directed to: Chris Anderson. 4-H Youth Development Specialist, Animal Science University of Maryland Extension Maryland 4-H Center 8020 Greenmead Drive College Park, MD Phone: FAX: canders2@umd.edu
