INTERMEDIATE INTERPRETATION CHAMPION: Elena Enyck REGIONAL PUBLIC SPEAKING The regional contest was held at the Easton High School on March 31 st. We had 9 4- Hers compete. This contest has no bearing on who represents us at the state level. Instead, it provides an opportunity to practice speeches again and to get additional feedback on their presentation. Cash awards are provided too. Results are as follows: Prepared Megan Mansfield 1 st, David Lumb 1 st; Extemporaneous Elyssa Crossley 1 st, Piper Patchett 2 nd, Brigid King 2 nd ; Radio Spot Nolan Corcoran 4 th, April Lee 2 nd, Harley Willis 3 rd, Katharine Tuttle 5 th. Congratulations to all of you! STATE PUBLIC SPEAKING There was a new process this year for our contestants to sign up for the state contest. Each county champion had to go to the 4-H Online enrollment website and sign themselves up for the contest. The contest will be held at the University of Maryland Campus at College Park on MD Day, April 29 th. Those registered are: Megan Mansfield, Caroline Taylor, David Lumb, Harley Willis, Carter Winterstein, Piper Patchett and Chad Patterson. EASTERN SHORE SPRING SHOW Mark and your calendars and get those entries in May 13, 2017, at the 4-H Park in Centreville. All entries MUST BE POSTMARKED BY APRIL 20, You can stop by the office for a form or go on to the website at 4-H PARK CLEAN-UP Thank you to all who helped during the first 2 park clean up-days. You all picked up many, many sticks and raked even more leaves! The final scheduled clean-up day is April 15 th. We hope to see you there on the 15 th. Be prepared to rake leaves and wash tables and chairs. MARYLAND 4-H CONGRESS Those who attended last year had a blast. This year s MD Congress will be held June 20 th -24 th at the University of MD, College Park campus. Please see the attached flyer. Registration will be opening in mid- April.
5 4-H SCHOLARSHIPS There are 43 state 4-H scholarships available. They are for any type of secondary education. That means colleges & universities, trade schools wherever you choose to continue your education. You do not have to be a graduating senior. Volunteers can apply as long as you were a 4-H er. To locate these scholarships, go to the Md. State 4-H website and click on MD 4-H Foundation. Scroll all the way down to the green band with the tiny print. There you will click on scholarships. We have the MD 4-H All Stars book scholarship in the Extension Office. They award several of these $1, scholarships each year. It s due April 10 th. We also have the Wm. J. Kimbles, IV Memorial Scholarship in the office. It s for a minimum of $ and is due back in the Extension Office by July 1 st. It will be awarded at the QAC Fair. SEWING CLASSES If anyone is interested in sewing classes, please let Ms. Sally know what you would like to do. Classes can be scheduled for June & July. FASHION REVUE We are looking for volunteers to assist with our Fashion Revue Workshops, Contest and Show. If you are interested Chris Johnston at cjohnstn@umd.edu and we will set up a doodle pole to determine a meeting date. ENGINEERING CAMP There s still time to register for Engineering Camp to be held April at the Rocks 4-H Camp in Harford County. Youth ages (as of 1/1/2017) are eligible to participate. The cost is $ For registration, go to the MD State 4-H Website and see the Event Calendar on the right side of the page. Click on Engineering Camp projects will be: large tractor operation, environmental engineering, GPS/GIS mapping and welding. They ll finish the weekend with a team engineering skills contest STATE HORSE BOWL RESULTS The MD State Horse Bowl Contest was held March 18 th at College Park. We had a successful team in each of the three age divisions. Our Junior Team placed 2 nd in the state. Individual scores in the top 15 were: Alli Dill-10 th, Julia Haynes- 13 th and Alyssa Jastram-14 th. Our Intermediate Team also placed 2 nd in the state! Individual scores in the top 15 were: Piper Patchett-4 th, Hannah Leavers- 7 th and Ania Haynes-14 th. Our Senior Team placed 4 th in the state. Individual scores in the top 15 were: Adrianna DiSilvestro-7 th, Emma Golden-13 th and Jen Gannon-14 th. Way to go ladies!
6 ATTENTION.FUNDRAISER!! The 4-H Marksmanship team is sponsoring a LuLaRoe/Paparazzi fundraiser for the Allan Sissom Memorial Fund. Allan was a 4H'er and was tragically killed in a car accident a year and a half ago. His parents, Beth and Jeff Sissom started a memorial scholarship fund for KIHS AND QACHS who wish to be enrolled in the welding program at Chesapeake College. It will be held at the 4H Park on Saturday, April 22nd, from 1 to 3 pm. We will have children's activities, food, and drawings for some pretty cool door prizes. Please come out and help us raise money for this family we all know and love. Any questions, please contact Angela Volker at TH ANNUAL STATE LIVESTOCK JACKPOT PREVIEW SHOW This show will be held at the Delaware State Fairgrounds, Rt. 13, Harrington, Delaware on Saturday and Sunday, May 20 th and 21 st. Show time starts 10 a.m. Entry deadline is May 1 st. Please contact Kent County Extension for entry information. Contact Susan Gavey at or truehart@udel.edu MARKET & BREEDING TAGGING You have two (2) opportunities to have your project animals officially tagged as your 4-H Project. May 13 th if you are attending the Eastern Shore Spring Show or June 6 th from 4-7:30 p.m. ALL MARKET GOATS, LAMBS and SWINE as well as Feeder Calves and Commercial females will be tagged. DO NOT confuse the 4-H tags with the official 840 RFID tags that all cattle and swine will have in order for your veterinarian to complete your CVI, better known as a health paper. The tag should have been applied by the breeder, if not, contact your veterinarian prior to your visit to see if they have them, if not you will be required to apply for a premis ID through MDA and purchase your own RFID tags. The purpose of the Potato Project is to provide members with the opportunity to learn about planting, growing and harvesting potatoes while helping the community. (Seed potatoes were provided by the Go Getters 4-H Club. Deadline for free seed potatoes was March 29 th so contact Lori O Connell at lorioc13@hotmail.com to see if any are still available. If not, you may purchase your own.)at harvest, each family will be responsible for donating at least the same number of pounds of potatoes back as they received in seed potatoes. The potatoes that are donated back will be staying in Queen Anne s County and will be distributed by the Sudlersville Food Pantry, the Family Center and Centreville Food Pantry. There will be a Family Dinner to celebrate the potato harvest the week after fair, the date will be announced later. It will be a covered dish dinner. Meat will be provided. We will be having a potato cook off. Each family is allowed to enter one dish per category. 1) Appetizers 2) Soups 3) Breads 4) Side Dishes 5) Desserts Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 dishes per category. Prizes will also be awarded in the following categories in 5 divisions: Under Clover, Clover, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. 1) Biggest 2) Smallest

Prizes will be donated by Betsey Crook, DVM ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND QUALITY ASSURANCE (AH & QA) All 4-H members with animal projects must complete the online Quality Assurance Program. There are 2 levels. Juniors have only one section to complete. Intermediates and seniors must also complete sections on individual species that they are showing. Once completed, you only need to redo it when you change from an age group (junior to intermediate or intermediate to senior) or if you add another species as an intermediate or senior. You may access the program at: It s on the state 4-H website. QUEEN ANNE S COUNTY FAIR August 7-12, That s our fair dates this year. It will be here before you know it! We are looking for youth volunteers to assist with the Indoor Department. You should be a senior 4-Her in order to help. There are different dates and different jobs that need to be done. Help with entries on Friday August 4 th from 5:00 8:00 pm is needed. We take in the entries, give out online printed entry tags, place entries in proper areas and ready things for the next few days. The same type help is needed on Saturday from 11:00 2:00 pm. Assistance with the Club Project judging is needed from 2:00 until about 4:00. Sunday is the biggest day. We need help from noon until about 10:00 pm. There are different shifts or you can stay the whole time. We feed you dinner if you stay. We need help with entries and judges and arranging and much more! Please let Ms. Sally (srosenbe@umd.edu) know if you are interested in helping.
8 POSTER CONTEST QUEEN ANNE S COUNTY FAIR 4-H PARK~~ CENTREVILLE, MD This year is the 75 th Anniversary of the Queen Anne s County Fair! Design a poster that promotes the fair and win a savings bond or cash prize. There will be four age divisions. All ages as of January 1 st of the current year. Clovers (5-7); Juniors (8-10); Intermediates (11-13) and Seniors (14-18) There will be ONE winner per division and will receive a $ savings bond. 2 nd and 3 rd place will receive a check for $ Ribbons are to be awarded to Honorable Mention entries.
