1 4-H Clover Patch 4-H Youth Development July August 2016 Dorchester County 501 Court Lane, Room 208 Cambridge, MD Phone: (410) Fax: (410) Navonne Owen 4-H Agent Associate Website: dorchester-county Facebook: University of Maryland Extension Dorchester County 4-H It s Fair Time Summer time is here, which means its Fair time. This summer newsletter is devoted to sharing details about our county fair and the Maryland State Fair. I encourage all of you to consider participating in some way exhibits, contests, entertainment, family fun, and more. There truly is fun and hands-on education for all! I also want to share information on how you and your family can help before, during, and after the Fair with the many duties that take place. Many hands make light work and that really is the case at the county Fair. The more 4-H members, volunteers, and families that help with set-up and fair jobs, the less work it is for all the volunteers who plan and run the Fair. Please consider how YOU will help during the Fair help with set-up, exhibit check-in, dipping ice cream, helping in kitchen, assisting with fair dinners, working at cake wheel booth, and so much more. See inside for details on what, when, and where help is needed most! Don t forget that the Maryland State Fair happens over the summer too. Youth are encouraged to enter their exhibits and participate in contests and other opportunities. See the Maryland State Fair section in this newsletter for all the details and entry deadline. Lastly, I say best wishes and thank you to Ms. Kerry who retired on July 1 st. Looking forward to seeing you all at the Fair! Equal Access Programs Navonne Owen, 4-H Agent Associate 1
2 A note from Kerry Turner, 4-H Program Assistant: Hi everyone, I want to let you all know that I will be retiring as of July 1 st Though it is an exciting opportunity for me, it is also a bit sad as I will not be continuing my 4-H work. I will surely miss working with the Dorchester County youth and all the teachers in the schools. I have made many connections, many friends in the county, the schools and the 4-H clubs in the last 16 years. I will miss the comradery we shared working together to bring topics of interest and stimulation to the children in Dorchester County. They may forget what we said, forget what we did, but they will never forget how we made them feel excited, interested, and passionate about life. I take this opportunity to thank one and all for your support which helped me develop both professionally and personally in achieving all the success that I had during my time with University of Maryland Extension and 4-H. I feel proud to have known each and every one and honored to have spent time with your children sharing, to the best of my ability, my knowledge of healthy living, nature, wildlife, conservation and environmental science. I wish everyone whose lives I ve touched and who have touched my life the very best in all things. I thank you all for your generosity, your support and your friendship and hope we all manage to connect again from time to time. I am looking forward to the next phase of my life and hope to continue sharing my time and experience with Dorchester County youth. And to all my young friends out there When the World says Give Up, Hope Whispers Try It One More Time Hope Springs Eternal Welcome, Miss Ashley Brown Since Ms. Kerry is retiring and 4-H has many outreach programs over the summer, we are excited to welcome Miss Ashley Brown as a part time 4-H Program Assistant. Ashley will be assisting with outreach programs for the next six months including afterschool and in-school enrichment programs, as well as assisting during the Caroline/Dorchester County Fair. Ashley is a Dorchester County 4-H alum, as she was a member of the 4-H Leprechauns club, and is a student at Chesapeake College. Ashley can be reached at abrown64@umd.edu County Fair Set-Up Night Wednesday, July 27, 6:30 pm 4-H families are needed to help with setup of the Fair on Wednesday, July 27 th at 6:30 pm at the 4-H Park in Denton. Please plan to attend and provide a few hours of service to help us get ready for the Fair!!! Please consider bringing a pair of gloves and rake, and make sure to wear comfortable clothes and shoes you don t mind getting dirty. 2
