2 A HUGE FAIR THANKS. Thank you to all of the help in the Indoor Department this year. There are far too many to name, but thank you to all of the 4-Hers who helped from the Friday before the fair all the way through the fair. Thank you for all of the adult help during those same times. Without your assistance, it couldn t be done. Thank you to all of the MANY judges that we had. It is not an easy task to judge and we are grateful for the time that you gave us. Senior 4-Hers, we would love to have more of you help with the Indoor process. It s really quite fun and you learn a lot about what goes on and how to get the Indoor area ready to open on Monday afternoon. You also learn who the champions are before everyone else knows, but you keep it a secret. Let Ms. Sally know if you would like to help next year. COUNTY FAIR FOLLOW UPS The county fair board is actively planning for next year s fair. They are always looking for ideas to expand and improve our fair. Please submit any ideas that you may have (in writing) to improve and especially if you are also willing to take a leadership role and help with an event. Also do not forget to cash you fair premium checks they are only Good for 90 days from date of issue POSTER CONTEST Twenty-four 4-H ers participated in the Annual Poster Contest which is sponsored by the Queen Anne s County 4-H All Stars.GRAND CHAMPION WINNER THIS YEAR WAS LOGAN BOZARTH Congratulations! This year the All Stars raised $5, for their scholarship fund. 4-H ers receive 25% and the rest goes into scholarships for worthy 4-H ers. Forty (40) 4-H ers earned a spot at the auction with some outstanding and awesome cakes! HUNTER MANSFIELD took home the honors with his Smith Island Cake receiving Senior Champion and Grand Champion Cake..Woo Hoo!! Courtney McClyment received top honors with her Senior and Grand Champion Decorated cupcakes Woo Hoo!! 4 NATIONAL 4-H WEEK Oct. 1 through 7 National 4-H Week is an annual celebration of 4-H during the first full week of October. During National 4-H Week we showcase the great things that 4-H offers young people and highlight the incredible 4-H youth who work every day to make a positive impact on their club, community, country and world. This year s National 4-H Week is 4-H Grown. Clubs and programs around the country will be sharing how 4-H Grows in their communities using this theme. In Maryland we celebrate National 4-H Week in ways big and small! We encourage you to participate in Maryland s National 4-H Week Spirit Week, developed and coordinated by the Maryland State 4-H Council. We want to share why we love 4-H far and wide, so use of social media is encouraged. Tag your social media posts with #MD4H and #4HGrown as well as the tag for each day s theme. There are the 3 categories of 3D, Flat and Tri-fold. Please let the Extension Office know where your display is and in which of the 3 categories it is in. They need to be in place by October 1 st. CALLING ALL NEW VOLUNTEERS UME volunteer training will be available on Tuesday, November 28 th from 7pm- 9pm at the Extension Office 505 Railroad Ave Centreville. This class will provide participants basic information on the University of Maryland Extension 4-H Youth Development program. It will cover UME policies and procedures and detail the process to becoming an appointed UME 4-H volunteer. Please contact Chris Johnston or cjohnstn@umd.edu to register or any further questions. Registration is free but please do so by November 27th so that we have enough paperwork for everyone.

5 4-H REALLY NEEDS YOU! Fall is our time to regroup, recruit and train volunteers to fulfill important roles to help us expand and enhance the mission of the 4-H program. Our 4-H project work is the means by which we help youth develop important life skills so that they can be successful and contributing citizens. We will be contacting our existing volunteers to update and revise their appointment agreements. AND we are looking for new volunteers or existing ones that would like to change their role or take on new ones to help in many areas- the more help we have- the more we can offer our youth! Volunteers are needed for: County Fair-Indoor, Outdoor and Special Events Judging Teams, Bowl and Skillathon team coaches Tractor Safety Weekend Educational Workshops/Camps-Animal Science, Healthy Living, etc. 4-H Organizational Leaders start a new club or assist with an existing one Annual Event Planning Committees Public Speaking, Achievement, Fashion Revue, Holiday Workshop, Sewing Workshop and many more if you have a skill that you are willing to share. Jen Gannon is representing Maryland at the National 4-H Hippology Contest in Louisville KY and Chad Patterson is a member of the Maryland State Dairy Judging B Team that will be participating in several Regional Dairy Judging events. HORSE BOWL TEAMS The practice sessions will be beginning in November to prepare our teams for the 2018 state competition this spring. Thank you to Dottie Gannon for coaching and coordinating this program and Shannon Dill and Penny Patchett for also serving as coaches. Contact Dottie if you are interested in participating. 6 RECORD BOOKS! Record books will be due no later than 4:30 PM on Tuesday January 16, Please don t wait until the last second to do them! The papers that you received with your fair checks will help you with some of the information on your record sheets. Remember, your age is as of January 1, 2017 for your 2017 Record Book. Clovers: You have your own record sheets to fill out. They are available on the QUEEN ANNE S COUNTY 4-H WEBSITE along with guidelines of how to complete your book. Juniors and Intermediates: You need to fill out a 4-H Summary Record which is located on the QUEEN ANNE S COUNTY 4-H WEBSITE. All of your past summary records need to remain in your book, but everything else from last year s book is removed. The guideline is also available online. There is a NON-ANIMAL PROJECT FORM there as well. It is ONLY used for projects that are NOT animals. The ANIMAL FORMS may be found on both the county and the state websites. Seniors: You MUST do a portfolio which is the current essay topic and your resume. It is your choice to add the traditional record book to your portfolio. There is information about these on our County Website. This year s essay topic for seniors is: What would you suggest 4-H do to increase involvement from youth your age? All guidelines and project forms are also available at the Extension Office. MARYLAND STATE COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES NEEDED!! Queen Anne s County needs 4-Hers between the ages of to represent us on the Maryland State Council. If you are interested in growing the MD 4-H program and would like to develop your own leadership and life skills, then this is for you! You will meet other 4-Hers from across the state and get to interact in many different ways. Council members meet every other month at College Park and you have an option to conference call for some of those meetings. Members get to participate in many different, enjoyable activities too. Applications are available at the Extension Office or on the MD 4-H Website. MARYLAND 4-H TEEN & VOLUNTEER FORUM Don t let the name fool you there are activities and workshops for 5-11 year olds too! The H Teen and Volunteer Forum will take place November 17 to 19 th at the Clarion Inn in Frederick. This weekend event is designed to unite volunteers and teens from around Maryland for engaging training and networking opportunities. Whether you come for a day or stay for the weekend, we hope you come to Learn by Doing in order to help the Maryland 4-H Program make the best better!

7 The whole family is welcome to come and learning tracks are provided for youth from 5-11 in the Clover, Junior and Intermediate tracks which will easily allow parents to attend the training tracks that span the breadth of 4-H programming; from Agriculture to Camp, Club to STEM activities. There is something for everyone! Save the date and plan to join us in Frederick County for a great fall weekend of learning and growing with 4-H youth and volunteers from across the state. Registration forms are on the State 4-H Website. E-FORUM On the evenings of October 5 th, (Cultivating an Environment for Growing True Leaders), November 2 nd (STEMMING into Animal Science, Growing True Leaders and December 7 th, (Helping 4-H ers Grow in Life and Work) three National 4-H Volunteer e-forums will be held. The e-forum is designed for volunteers to come to a central meeting location where they will hear from presenters located across the country and participate in hands on activities. A variety of speakers, activities, and networking will be provided during each session. Volunteers will gain new ideas, tops and resources that can be used and shared at the local level. The Caroline County Extension Office will serve as host site for each of the dates. The sessions start at 7 pm. To register for one of the dates, please Wendi Potter at wpotter@umd.edu SENIOR PORTFOLIOS & APPLICATIONS FOR NATIONAL 4-H TRIPS Senior 4-Hers may complete a senior portfolio, consisting of a resume and an essay, in place of (or in addition to) a traditional record book. The current essay topic is: What would you suggest 4-H do to increase involvement from youth your age? Senior members may apply for the chance to be selected and attend one of five out-of-state 4-H trips. To apply, senior 4-Hers must complete and turn in a 4- H portfolio, fill out an application and then participate in an interview process. The out-of-state trips include: National 4-H Congress in Atlanta, Georgia, National 4-H Conference in Chevy Chase, MD (Washington D.C.), Camp Miniwanca in Michigan, West Virginia 4-H Camp and Virginia 4-H Congress. Portfolios and applications for National 4-H Conference are due October 15 th. Portfolios and applications for all other trips are due January 15 th. More information may be found on the state 4-H website. MARYLAND 4-H HORSEMANS FUNDRAISER We are writing to extend an invitation to you to attend the 2017 Maryland 4-H Horsemen s Party on Sunday, October 8, 3:00-6:30 pm at the Grandstand Grille on the Maryland State Fairgrounds, Timonium, MD. The Maryland Horsemen s Party is the major recognition and fundraising event for the Maryland 4-H Horse Program. 8 2016 and 2017 Maryland State 4-H Horse Teams In addition to the recognition given to members and volunteers at the Horsemen s Party, we will have Dinner, 50/50 and Saddle Raffles, and a Silent Auction. Get your tickets now and consider donating an item or basket for the auction or being an event sponsor: Tickets - Tickets are $25.00 for adults/youth 13 and over & $15.00 for youth 12 and under. Reserve your tickets online before October 1 st by visiting and clicking on the Horsemen s Party link. Donations - We are also seeking donations for the silent auction. Donations could include horse related décor or jewelry, horse tack and grooming items, and much more. We have been fortunate in the past that many of our Maryland 4-H Horse Clubs have decorated and donated a themed basket for the event. See the attached flyer and donation form for more information. MID-SHORE STEM FESTIVAL Eastern Shore Higher Education Center (Chesapeake College) November 4, 2017 From 10:00 AM 2:00 PM there will be, FREE for all ages, STEM Activities including Displays, Hands-On-Activities and Demonstrations. Also, Interactive Tours of the Chesapeake College Health Facilities and the Agriculture Facilities. Food will be available for purchase. 9 CHRISTMAS PARADE The Annual Centreville Christmas Parade will be held on Friday, December 1, This year s theme is: A CHESAPEAKE BAY CHRISTMAS. For more information and entry form please visit: or call their office at H ANIMAL OWNERSHIP DATES The following table identifies the latest date that ownership must be established for animals to be used in 4-H animal science project exhibitions. For the purposes of 4-H project exhibitions, an animal must be owned or leased by a single 4-H member. The exception to this is with performance animals, including horses, camelids and dogs, which may be leased by up to two 4-H members as outlined in the Maryland 4-H Performance Animal Lease Guidelines. Animals that are to be leased for the purpose of 4-H project work must be identified on the Maryland 4- H Animal Lease Guidelines and submitted to the County 4-H Office by June 1 st. If a 4-H er exhibits a leased animal at a Spring Show, the registration form must be completed and turned in to the County 4- H Office by May 1 st. A copy of the completed Lease documents will be sent to the State 4-H Office to be placed on file. Some counties may establish earlier deadlines. Outdoor displays must be weatherproof and the trees must be securely anchored. 1. Tree designs MUST HAVE A VISABLE TITLE TO JUDGES indicating the tree s theme. 2. Electric lights may be used, but they are not necessary. 3. ALL CLUBS WILL PROVIDE THEIR OWN TREES Tree height must be over 3 feet, but not over 8 feet. NO CUT TREES are allowed use only artifical ones. 4. The 4-H club name MUST BE DISPLAYED AT THE TREE SITE. 5. As a club member use their creative energy to construct handmade ornaments for a Christmas tree. Trees are judged for neatness, and ORIGINALITY AND THE PRIMARY OBJECTIVE IS TO SPREAD SOME HOLIDAY JOY FOR THOSE WHO NEED IT THE MOST. This is only a club contest, but individuals are encouraged to display their own tree around the community as a service project. Trees should be place by MONDAY, DECEMBER 4 TH.
