Office Building beginning at 9:00 a.m. Event day registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. The 4-H Public Presentation registration link is: The registration deadline is Wednesday, Feb. 6. KATHERINE GUILES RECOGNITION Congratulations to Katherine Guiles, 4-H Youth Development volunteer, for receiving a Friends of Extension Award at the annual CCE Annual meeting. The annual meeting was held in December at Tioga Downs. The Friends of Extension awards are given to community members who have demonstrated dedication and on-going commitment to support CCE Tioga and its mission to help improve the quality of life for citizens of Tioga County. 4-H REMINDER - VERY IMPORTANT!! When you have paperwork or money to drop off in the 4-H Office PLEASE CALL AHEAD to make sure that Melissa or Jody are in the office to collect it. DO NOT drop things off at the front desk and leave. A lot of paperwork and money have been lost in the shuffle lately and it takes a lot of extra

2 time to track it all down. The front desk will no longer accept money or paperwork. It all must be brought to Melissa or Jody. 4-H CLUB REPORTS Animal Aholics 4-H Club.... In December, the Animals Aholics 4-H Club won the best float contest at the Tioga Downs Holiday Parade with their Polar Express float. Later, the club members went to Stray Haven and donated one-half of the prize which equaled $500 to Stray Haven. Berkshire Broncos 4-H Club.... The Berkshire Broncos 4-H Club had a very active December. We made more than 100 ornaments from donated vials from the AHDC lab at Cornell University, had a holiday party and helped to pack more than 100 food boxes for the Berkshire Food Pantry for families in need. We all totally enjoyed helping to spread the holiday spirit by giving back to our community. We also attended the first in a series of Equine Seminars that is happening at Cornell University. The first lecture was on Equine Foot Care presented by Steven Krauss, Farrier Director at Cornell University. It was held in Morrison Hall. It was an information packed learning experience. Some of the club members are planning to attend the remaining monthly seminars that are being offered.

3 At the end of the month we had a dish to pass holiday party. We had originally planned to go sledding too but due to the rainy weather we enjoyed games, crafts, good food, snacks and had fun with a white elephant auction for gifts. CORNELL EQUINE SEMINAR SERIES Come learn about equine health and management topics from Cornell s equine experts! The seminars are being held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of every month. Tuesday, Feb Cornell Equine Vets and Staff. Equine Behavior 101: What do our horses whisper to us? 4-H PHEASANT RAISE & RELEASE PROJECT The 4-H Ring Neck Pheasant Raise & Release project is being made available to approved 4-H

4 members through the DEC. 4-H families that are interested in participating in this project MUST ATTEND A MANDATORY Introductory Meeting. This meeting will be held Monday, Feb. 25, at 6:30 p.m., in the 4-H Office. Following the introductory meeting, 4-H families will have until Friday, March 8 to decide whether to commit to the project or not. The 4-H Office will order all pheasant chicks which are delivered in early May. SAVE THE DATE FOR 4-H ROBOTICS CHALLENGE CCE Steuben will host a fun 4-H Robotics Challenge for 4-H teams across the state on Saturday, April 27. The Challenge will be held at the Howard Community Building, Hornell, NY. Registration is at 11:00 a.m. with the contest starting at noon. The Challenge theme will be focused on Engineering with Robots. The LEGO Challenges will include NXT or EV3 robots that will have to accomplish challenge tests. A team must have a minimum of three 4-H members that are 8 to 18 years old. The mat will be the 2018 NYS Fair Challenge Mat. The robots must be LEGO Mindstorms NXT 1.0, 2.0, EV3, Education, or any combination of the three. Programming software should be the current free NXT or EV3 software from LEGO. A total of three NXT Servo motors are allowed; or four EV3 motors throughout the entire event; and ONLY one NXT or EV3 brick (only 1 robot). Only four sensors at one time are allowed. The sensors may be any of the NXT or EV3 sensors sold by LEGO. Sensor brands other than LEGO are not allowed. No exceptions. Each team must have only one pre-constructed robot with attachments and whatever is needed to program it (laptop, cable, software, etc.). A note on variability: remember that lighting, sound, playing field, slight measurements and task objects may differ at the competition from the condition in which the robots are tested. Be prepared to make adjustments as needed. The Challenge tasks, registration information, and more specific details will be available mid-january. Applications are due Friday, January 18, 5:00 pm, EST. 5 17, 2019 at the Oswegatchie Educational Center, Groghan, NY. This event is open to 4-H youth ages 13 to 19 (as of January 1, 2019). The cost is $75.00 per participant which covers lodging, meals (Saturday breakfast to Sunday lunch) as well as snacks and workshop supplies.
